Abstract:In this paper, polyorganophosphazene with electroactive property was synthesized by introducing pendant aniline dimer groups. Its structure was characterized by IR and 1H NMR spectrometry. Moreover, its electroactive property and thermal stability were investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and thermal gravity analysis, respectively. As shown from these results, this polymer not only possesses better thermal stability but also still retains electroactivity.

Abstract:Aromatic polyesters bearing pendent carboxyl functionalities were prepared by interfacial polycondensation of diphenolic acid, bisphenol A and isophthaloyl chloride with tetrabutylammonium chloride as phase transfer catalyst. The copolyester composition was confirmed with HPLC analysis. The polymerization process and composition of the copolyesters were examined by considering influences of reaction temperatures, time, ratio of feeds, agitation speeds.

Abstract:Polyacetylene (PA) is the archetypal conjugated polymer. The seminal discovery of the metallic conductivity of its doped form has triggered a huge surge of interest in conductive polymers and has spawned an exciting area of research on synthetic metals. As a result of rapid advances in the area, we are now on the threshold of a ‘‘plastic-electronics era’’ that previously could only be imagined in science fiction. Structurally, PA is a linear polyene chain [−(HC=CH)n−]. The existence of two hydrogen atoms in its repeat unit offers ample opportunity to decorate the backbone with pendants: replacement of hydrogen in each repeat unit by one or two substituents yields mono(1) and disubstituted PAs (2), respectively (Scheme 1.1). The pendant and backbone can interact with each other: for example, the former perturbs the electronic conjugation of the latter, while the latter influences the molecular alignment of the former. Proper structural design may tune the backbone–pendant interplay into harmony and synergy, generating new substituted PAs with novel functionalities. While PA is electrically conductive, introduction of such pendant as mesogen, chromophore, photosensitive double bond, or naturally occurring building block may endow it with such new functional properties as electro-optic activity, photonic responsiveness, and biologic compatibility. Considerable efforts have been devoted to the synthesis of the substituted PAs and study of their properties [1–9]. Attachment of polar groups to the polyene backbone enables the integration of functional pendants into the PA chain through various functional-group transformations, which was, however, a difficult task at the early stage of PA chemistry. Abstract:A sulfur-bearing substituent, 2-thiazolidinethione, poly(organophosphazene) with side groups of this substituent and its metal polymer complex with cobalt(II) were synthesized and characterized. The structures of these compounds were investigated by means of IR, UV, DTA, EA and 1H NMR. The relationship between the structure and properties of poly(organophosphazene) was discussed. The results show that the poly(organophosphazene) with 2-thiazolidinethione has better thermal stability than the ligand investigated by TGA. Furthermore, the metal polymer complex showed an electroactivity due to the Co2+/Co3+ redox process confirmed by CV.

Abstract:Poly(l-pentyne)s containing biphenyl and phthalimido pendant groups with different spacer lengths {P1(m); -[HC=C(CH2)(3)O-Biph-OCO(CH2)(m)N(CO)(2)C6H4](n)-, Biph=4,4'-biphenylyl; m = 7, 10} are synthesized in satisfactory yields by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst in toluene at elevated temperatures. The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, TGA, DSC, POM, and XRD analyses. Both of the polymers are thermally stable (T-d greater than or less than 300 degrees C) and exhibit nematicity at high temperatures. Their phthalimido groups are converted into amino groups by hydrolysis, which can, after acidification, complex with lead(II) bromide to furnish polyacetylene-perovskite hybrids in high yields. The organic components contribute good solubility to the hybrids, while the perovskite framework induces the polyacetylene chains to align within the inorganic sheets. The hybrids emit a strong UV light of 374 nm upon photoexcitation, whose quantum yield increases with an increase in the spacer length. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:We report herein the synthesis and electrochemical characterization of a novel copolymer containing an electron rich carbazole moiety and an electron deficient oxadiazole unit-poly[N-(2'-ethylhexyl)-carbazole-3,6-diyl-1 ",3 ",4 "-oxadiazole-2 ",5 "-diyl] (PCO) PCO can be dissolved in THF, CHCl3, xylene, and DMSO. The structure of the polymer is confirmed by FT-IR, NMR and elemental analysis. The optical and electronic properties of the polymer are investigated by W-Vis absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence spec troscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry. The results show that the polymer films emit greenish-blue Light (lambda(max) 485 nm) upon UV excitation. Both p-doping and n-doping processes are observed in cyclic voltammetric investigation. Abstract:Comb-like polyamides bearing different contents of tetraaniline pendant groups were synthesized via nucleophilic polymerization coupled with a post-functionalization method, and exhibit excellent solubility, good thermal stability and interesting spectroscopic properties. Their electronic properties, including conductivity, dielectricity, electroactivity, electrochromism and anticorrosion, were effectively adjusted and controlled by importing different numbers of tetraaniline pendant groups.

Abstract:A new bis(aroylacetylene) containing triazole and fluorene moieties is synthesized by click chemistry. Polycyclotrimerization of the monomer is catalyzed by piperidine in refluxed dioxane, furnishing a regioregular poly(aroylarylene) in a satisfactory yield. The hyperbranched structure of the polymer is characterized spectroscopically with satisfactory results. The polymer enjoys no metal detriment and is soluble in common organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), chloroform, dichloromethane (DCM), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF).

Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:A novel pyrene covalently-attached polyoxometalate (POM) hybrid has been synthesized and fully characterized. The attractive electronic and photophysical properties of pyrene derivatives make the hybrid promising for studying and understanding electron transfer mechanisms in organic-functionalized POMs. The hybrid has an electronic absorption at 450 nm, indicating that there is a strong electronic interaction between the organic pyreneimido group and inorganic hexamolybdate cluster. The electron transfer mechanism of the as-prepared hybrid is illuminated via the combined studies of theoretical calculations and transient absorption spectroscopy. Time-dependent density functional theory studies revealed that the strong electronic absorption at the visible region mainly comes from the optically allowed π-π* transitions of the pyreneimido component (S(0) to S(2) transition). The electron transfer process from the excited pyreneimido moiety to the inorganic POM cluster is at the time scale of ~700 fs, which could be ascribed to the internal conversion of singlet excited states from S(2) state to S(1) state. This study provided a clear understanding of the mechanism governing the electron transfer process in organoimido derivatives of POMs. This result might offer a new route for the design of new charge transfer hybrid clusters of organic functionalized POMs and crucial guidance for their applications in optical and electrical devices.

Abstract:Hybrid polyoxometalate-porphyrin copolymeric films were obtained by the electro-oxidation of zinc octaethylporphyrin (ZnOEP) in the presence of a Dawson type polyoxophosphovanadotungstate bearing two pyridyl groups (POM(py)(2)). The synthesis of a series of POM(py)(2) consisting of [P2W15V3O62](9-) functionalized with diol-amide or triol moieties, as well as the characterization of the copolymers are presented.

Abstract:Polydichlophosphazene ( PDCP ) was prepared by the ring-opening polymerization of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene in the presence of 2%AlCl3. A new mixed substituent poly( organophosphazene ) bearing 2-( 2-oxy-1-pyrrolidiny ) ethoxy and methoxyethoxyethoxy side groups was synthesized via the macromolecular substitution reactions of poly( dichlorophosphazene ) with the sodium salt of 1-( 2-hydroxyethyl )-2-pyrrolidone and sodium iiiethoxyethoxyethoxide. Its structure was verified by P-31 NMR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, IR and DSC. Its molecular weight was determined by vapor pressure osmometry( VPO ). 18-Crown-6 was used in the synthesis of poly[ di ( 2-oxy-1-pyrrolidiny ) ethoxyphophazene ] ( PYRP ) as phase transfer catalysis in order to improve its synthetic method. The new polymer and PYRP were water-soluble and their in vitro degradation behavior was studied at varied pH conditions. The results indicate that the degradation of poly ( organophosphazenes ) with ( 2-oxy-1-pyrrolidiny ) ethoxy side groups is dependent on pH of the buffer solution. The rate of hydrolysis was more rapid at pH = 5. 0 than at pH = 7. 4 and pH = 8. 0. It was shown that addition of methoxyethoxyethoxy side group to PYRP structure resulted in a decrease in the rate of hydrolysis. The hydrolysis products of the poly ( organophosphazenes ) were analyzed by P-31 NMR, thin layer chromatography ( TLC ) and titration methods. A hydrolysis pathway of the new polymer in buffer solutions with pH = 5. 0, 7. 4 and 8. 0 was proposed. The degradation of the polymers at pH = 5. 0 involved a hydrolytic cleavage of ( 2-oxy-1-pyrrofidiny ) ethoxy from the chain followed by the degradation of the phosphorus-nitrogen backbone to form phosphate and ammonium. However, the degradation of the polymers at pH = 7. 4 and pH = 8. 0 was only cleavage of the side group. The WIT test for the new polymer and its hydrolysis products at pH = 5. 0 in HepG2 cell revealed that an increase in polymer concentration from 1. 3 to 800 mu g/mL was not harmful for the cell survival. The hydrolysis products of the new polymer at 800 mu g/mL were able to promote cell proliferation.

Abstract:A new disubstituted polyacetylene with indolylazo moieties in its side chains (9) was synthesized by a post functionalization strategy, which was difficult, or perhaps impossible, to obtain from the direct polymerization of its corresponding monomer. The polymer is soluble in common solvents and thermally stable. The polymer shows good optical transparency with an absorption maximum at 393 mn and a band edge at similar to 530 nm. Its poled film exhibits a resonant d(33) value of 17.9 pm/V and its optical nonlinearity is resistant to thermal decay at up to 147 degrees C. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Heteratom-doped organic π-conjugated molecules (OCMs) have become one type of emerging optoelectronic materials with intriguing functionalities. Phosphorus (P)-doped OCMs are a special member of the heteratom-doped OCMs where rich P-chemistry is able to fine-tune optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report a new series of nonplanar diazaphosphepine-based polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (DPP-PAHs). Efficient and mild double P—N cyclization allowed to readily install two P-centers in DPP-PAHs. With nonplananr diazaphosphepine rings, DPP-PAHs exhibit contorted structures in the single crystal structures. The functionalization of double P-centers by H2O2 and S8 gave DPP-PAHs with P=O and P=S centers, respectively. Compared with the parent small molecule, DPP-PAHs exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields. Our experimental and theoretical studies further revealed that both P-environments and conjugated backbones have impacts on the photophysical properties of the DPP-PAHs.

Abstract:Functional poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) bearing different azobenzene pendants were synthesized in desirable yields and molecular weight by using organorhodium complexes [Rh(diene)Cl]2 as catalysts. The structure of the derived azobenzene-functionalized PPAs was characterized by NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopic techniques. Their photoinduced isomerization behavior was monitored with UV–visible spectroscopy. The thermal stability was evaluated by TGA technique. Polarized optical microscope (POM) observations indicated that the PPAs constructed by linking azobenzene moieties via a longer flexible alkyl spacer to PPA backbone showed typical liquid-crystalline property and the mesophase was assigned to SmA phase. Their phase transition behaviors were further investigated by differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) measurements. The molecular packing modes were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement and theoretical simulation. These results revealed some details about the interactions between the polymer backbone, flexible alkyl spacer, and azobenzene functional moiety, which are constructive to design and synthesize novel functional conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Biodegradable polyphosphazenes,because of their unusual structures and versatility in terms of chemical and physical properties,have been investigated for different biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.The types of biodegradable polyphosphazenes are briefly introduced in this paper.The recent progress of the synthetic procedures used for the preparation of biodegradable polyphosphazenes with two same side groups including amine-substituted polyphosphazenes,alkoxy(or aryloxy)-substituted polyphosphazenes,glycery-substituted polyphosphazenes and side groups-derived polyphosphazenes is reviewed.The purpose and method of synthesizing biodegradable mixed substituent polyphosphazenes with two(or more) different side groups are summarized.The factors that affect the reaction of synthesizing polyphosphazenes and modification of polyphosphazenes and other polymers are also discussed.

Abstract:Organoimidoylization of Polyoxometalates (POMs) can dramatically modify the electronic structures of POMs and gives rise to novel “value-adding” properties of the POMs for promising material applications including photo-electronic transformation and catalysis. To date, the preparation of multi-functionalized organoimido derivatives of POMs is generally conducted under strict condition and is time-consuming with limited yields. Herein, a series of regioselective polyorganoimido derivatives of POMs, ocatant - [Mo 6 O 13 (NAr) 3 ( μ 2 -NAr) 3 ] 2 − (Ar = phenyl ( 1 ), p -methoxyphenyl ( 2 ) and p -ethylphenyl ( 3 )), were synthesized with high selectivity and in good yields via a general and highly regioselective synthesis method, called as the one-octant synthesis protocol. The reaction was monitored by ESI-MS and the as-prepared products were studied by ESI-MS, IR, UV-Vis, EA, 1 HNMR, single crystal XRD analysis and DFT calculations. The one-octant synthesis protocol here may serve as an idea method to design novel nanoscale POM-based organic-inorganic multi-functional hybrids.

Abstract:The synthesis and structural characterization of a series of novel, fluorinated poly(phthalazinone ether)s containing perfluorophenylene moieties are described. The monomers, 4-(4'-hydroxyaryl)phthalazin-1(2H)-ones (2a-2d), were conveniently and efficiently synthesized from phenols and phthalic anhydride in two steps via 2-(4'-hydroxybenzoyl)benzoic acids, which were first obtained by the Friedel-Crafts reaction in good yields and with high stereoselectivity and were then converted into 2a-2d by fusion with hydrazine. All the polymers were prepared by nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) polycondensation between the compounds perfluorobiphenyl and 4-(4'-hydroxyaryl)phthalazin-1(2H)-ones (2a-2d). The resulting fluorinated polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents (e.g., CHCl3, tetrahydrofuran, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, N-methylpyrrolidone, etc.) at room temperature. Their weight-average molecular weights and the polydispersities ranged from (7.96-18.25) X 10(3) to 1.31-2.71, respectively. Their glass-transition temperatures varied from 213 to 263 degreesC. They were all stable up to 390 degreesC both in air and in argon. The 5% weight-loss temperatures of these polymers in air and argon ranged from 393-487 to 437-509 degreesC, respectively. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction studies indicated they were all amorphous and could be attributed to the presence of kink nonplanar moiety, phenyl phthalazinone along the polymer backbone.
