Abstract:One polarization measurement technology is proposed to apply in the basic Terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) using only one rotatable polarizer. The method to upgrade such a polarimetric Terahertz time-domain Spectroscopy (P-THz-TDS) was presented. The method is verified by measured important polarization parameters including Stokes parameters, polarization dependent loss, and birefringence of materials.

Abstract:In Maxwell equations, the electromagnetic response of a medium is usually described by permittivity epsilon(omega) and permeability mu(omega) in constitutive relations. For an electromagnetic field propagating in a medium, there exist two independent eigen modes in general, each of which is a special particular solution of Maxwell e-quations, satisfies a unique dispersion relation and keeps its own polarization during propagation. If a traveling electromagnetic field is a linear superposition of the two eigen modes, its polarization will constantly change as propagating in medium, such as birefringence in anisotropic crystals, polarization modulation in metamaterials, optical activity in natural chiral materials and external magnetic field induced Faraday effects, etc. In this review, terahertz time-domain polarization measurement system is introduced, including principle, data processing and measurement accuracy. Polarization modulation using wire grid polarizer, metamaterial and other optical methods are discussed in detail. The applications of the polarization measurement system are reviewed in analyzing properties of chiral metamaterials, terahertz circular dichroism spectroscopy and Faraday effects. Finally, we give a brief comment on the future development and prospect of the polarization sensitive terahertz measurement technique.

Abstract:We derive the complete formulae governing the polarization state measurement in terahertz-time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) by using a rotatable THz polarizer. Four Stokes parameters can be uniquely obtained by spectrally-resolved measurement in THz-TDS. Further, we propose a new approach to measure the Mueller matrix of a pure birefringent material, using THz-TDS, by rotating the material under test. Based on the above techniques, we successfully measured the Mueller matrices of a quartz crystal in the frequency domain.

Abstract:Unique features of terahertz (THz) wave have made THz spectroscopy a potential and ideal tool for spectroscopy analysis. When a conventional THz spectroscopy system is used to measure a sample with birefringence, sometimes it is highly possible to misinterpret a polarization filter effect as normal spectral absorption, thus leads to a wrong identification and conclusion. Polarimetric terahertz spectroscopy (PTS) is one kind of newly emerged technology upgraded from conventional terahertz spectroscopy, in addition to all the traditional functions, it is able to automatically measure additional state of polarization of THz wave, as well as additional polarization information of samples. Here in this article we will comprehensively review the principle and progress of such PTS technology.

Abstract:Abstract Terahertz frequencies locating between microwave and infrared regions can record and process optical information for next‐generation information technology such as 6G communication. Metasurfaces, as emerging planar optical components built with micro‐ or nanostructures, enable precise control, and manipulation of electromagnetic waves from near fields to far fields. These subwavelength artificial structures can be engineered to exhibit specific polarization responses, thus holding significant potential for applications in polarization detection. In the terahertz (THz) region, polarization information is crucial for identifying and analyzing the properties of materials in the terahertz. In this review, we focus on recent advances in terahertz metasurfaces for polarization manipulation and detection, including principles and emerging applications. New polarization detection methods such as polarization state conversion, polarization‐selective absorption, polarization‐selective focusing, and vector beam construction are discussed. Finally, it is concluded with a few perspectives on emerging trends and existing challenges in the fields of terahertz polarization manipulation and detection.

Abstract:The polarization measurement of terahertz (THz) waves is indispensable in THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) applications to detect material properties. The rapid development of accurate THz wave polarization-sensitive detectors will greatly promote THz-TDS applications. A new type of photoconductive antenna array detector is proposed in this paper. The antenna is composed of two vertical 1*2 arrays, which respectively detect the orthogonal component of the terahertz pulse in any direction, while quickly and accurately detecting the polarized THz waves. Rotating the detector to measure the THz electric field at different angles shows the reliability of the detector for THz wave polarization measurement. Its polarization detection accuracy is 0.2°. At the same time, we use the response matrix to analyze the symmetry of the antenna array.

Abstract:Polarimetry is a well-developed technique in radar based applications and stand-off spectroscopic analysis at optical frequencies. Extension to terahertz (THz) frequencies could provide a breakthrough in spectroscopic methods since the THz portion of the electromagnetic spectrum provides unique spectral signatures of chemicals and biological molecules, useful for filling gaps in detection and identification. Distinct advantages to a THz polarimeter include enhanced image-contrast based on differences in scattering of horizontally and vertically polarized radiation, and measurements of the dielectric response, and thereby absorption, of materials in reflection in real-time without the need of a reference measurement. To implement a prototype THz polarimeter, we have developed low profile, high efficiency metamaterial-based polarization control components at THz frequencies. Static metamaterial-based half- and quarter-wave plates operating at 0.35 THz frequencies were modeled and fabricated, and characterized using a MHz resolution, continuous-wave spectrometer operating in the 0.09 to 1.2 THz range to verify the design parameters such as operational frequency and bandwidth, insertion loss, and phase shift. The operation frequency was chosen to be in an atmospheric window (between water absorption lines) but can be designed to function at any frequency. Additional advantages of metamaterial devices include their compact size, flexibility, and fabrication ease over large areas using standard microfabrication processing. Wave plates in both the transmission and reflection mode were modeled, tested, and compared. Data analysis using Jones matrix theory showed good agreement between experimental data and simulation.

Optimization of Asymmetric Orthomode Transducer at Terahertz Frequency

Abstract:For the need of polarization multiplexing, an asymmetric orthomode transducer (OMT) working at 260~325 GHz is demonstrated in this paper. Since the reflection efficient bandwidth of directed port is commonly wider than that of side port in the previous designs, the coupling aperture corresponding to side port is enlarged, which optimizes the performance of the side port and reduces difficulty of high frequency processing while deteriorate directed port a little due to higher discontinuity. Then the first two high-order-modes introduced by discontinuity and asymmetry is investigated. To achieve a better polarization isolation, the size of the common port is reduced, which decreases the cross-polarization component introduced by structural design and fabrication errors with the help of the suppression of the highorder-modes. As a result, the bandwidth and polarization isolation are increased. The return loss is less than -15db and the polarization isolation is better than -50db in the working frequency.

Abstract:Millimeter wave propagation in a real complex environment is of much interest to the communities of remote sensing, communication and detection. To systematically evaluate the path loss of millimeter wave in rainy and foggy environment, a well-designed system is required to control the beam divergence and the polarization of the launched beam. This paper presented a broadband polarization rotator for millimeter wave propagation measurement using a quasioptical system. The insertion loss of the polarization rotator is less than 0.5dB and the bandwidth is more than 140GHz, covering a frequency range of 100-240 GHz. Parametric study shows a good angular stability and polarization independent property.

Abstract:The electromagnetic wave in the terahertz region shows many promising characteristics, such as non-ionization, "fingerprint" spectrum, sensitivity to weak resonance, strong penetration to non-polar substances, and so on. This study reviews the recent achievements of terahertz achromatic broadband polarization wave plates. The key parameters to evaluate the performance of terahertz polarized wave plates are described briefly. The relevant works, and benefits and drawbacks of terahertz wave plates based on diverse materials and designs, notably metamaterial wave plates, are summarized based on unique material attributes and design methodologies. Additionally, the current state of the terahertz achromatic broadband wave plate is generalized, along with the role of metamaterial in the design of terahertz wave plate, the innovative interdisciplinary path of terahertz metamaterial polarization is explained, and future research prospects are explored.

Abstract:Compact and efficient terahertz (THz) polarization conversion components are of importance for applications where the small dimension of the laser device/system is critical. Here, we propose an ultracompact L-shaped subwavelength patterns on metal films to realize the THz polarization management. By optimizing the geometric parameters of single-layered and double-layered patterns, the linear-polarized THz incidence can be converted to elliptical polarized output or rotated by 90° efficiently due to the THz extraordinary optical transmission phenomenon. The physical mechanism is explored by mode analysis using numerical and analytical modeling.

Abstract:Employing an orientation-modulated bias field, a polarization-sensitive scheme for terahertz air-biased-coherent-detection (THz-ABCD) is presented to directly measure the amplitude and polarization angle of THz field in the time domain. It can provide all characteristics of arbitrarily polarized THz wave with one single-scan measurement. Measuring convenience, broad bandwidth, and high angular resolution have been achieved. Polarization-sensitive THz time-domain spectroscopy can surely be developed based on this technology. Many other applications in the THz spectral region are also believed. Abstract:Broad bandwidth is a unique nature of terahertz (THz) waves. THz optical research usually uses time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) systems spanning over 0.1-4 THz. Polarization control, especially quarter-wave and half-wave conversion across such a broad band is very challenging. In this work we present an ultra-broadband tunable polarization converter for THz waves based on a total-internal-reflection (TIR) sandwich structure. By finely tunning the air gap between the prism and the metal mirror, quarter-wave and half-wave conversion, as well as left-right circular conversion can be achieved in 0.3-2.5 THz with an excellent accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:The manipulation of polarization states is reflected in the tailoring of light-matter interactions and has great applications in fundamental science. Nevertheless, the conventional polarization-separated detection behavior in the terahertz (THz) band is very challenging when applied to visualize the incident polarization state since its measurement requires sophisticated instrumentation. Here, the feasibility of its reconstruction of the full-Stokes parameter matrix in the THz band is explored by establishing an all-silicon decoupled metasurface based on the polarization multiplexing encoding technique. The pixelated focal spots gathered in the target plane allow us to employ more elaborate methods to extract the characteristic parameters of the incident polarization states. The resolvability of the THz polarization detection behavior with a single focal spot is further optimized benefiting from the longitudinal polarization component (E-z) generated by the tightly focused beam in the propagation direction. The capability of the E-z-component in determining the key parameters that compose the polarization ellipse is evaluated by predefining the random incident polarization on a standard Poincare sphere. Thus, the proposed scheme offers significant advantages in future THz communications, providing opportunities for ultra-compact, high-resolution full-Stokes polarization imaging and multidimensional information processing.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) communication and sensing technology has recently gained increasing attention. Metallic parallel-plate waveguides (PPWG) have been researched since they were proven to be the carrier of lossless transmission of THz waves. However, previous reports have focused on the transmission and phase properties of single-polarized THz waves in PPWGs and have barely investigated the polarization properties. To reconstruct the polarization of the output THz wave in a PPWG, we study the transmission and phase properties of both TE and TM modes in detail. The phase difference of the TE and TM modes can be continuously adjusted by varying the propagation length and the gap of the two plates in PPWG due to the different dispersion of the two modes. The polarization ellipticity and rotation angle can be modulated in the range of ±45°. When a photonic cavity structure is applied to a PPWG, the output wave will be converted to 90° linear polarization at the frequency located in the cavity mode. All the proposed polarization control can be tuned by changing the structural parameters forming the PPWGs, making this approach attractive for integrating the function of the THz waveguides, which has significance for THz communication and sensing.

Abstract:Polarization detection is an important part of many polarization applications such as polarization imaging, wireless communication, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. In this paper, two polarization-dependent terahertz wave absorption and transmission metasurface for linearly and circularly polarized light are proposed and proved by numerical simulations. Polarization filtering and polarization absorption are integrated on a single cell, and the orthogonal polarization component is transmitted and absorbed, respectively. The linearly polarization-dependent transmission and absorption structure can obtain a transmission extinction ratio of 11.5 dB and an absorption extinction ratio of over 270 dB at 3 THz. Moreover, the circularly polarization-dependent structure can obtain a transmission extinction ratio of 8.1 dB and an absorption extinction ratio of 4.66 dB at 2.8 THz. Our design facilitates the acquisition of full Stokes parameters and the high-resolution imaging.

Abstract:On the basis of computer simulation technology (CST) software, the polarization characteristics of two-dimensional metal grating arrays in 0.1-10 THz region are numerically analyzed. Different periodic metal copper grating arrays with 20 nm thickness deposited on 500 lint thick high-resistance silicon substrate arc experimentally prepared by photo-lithography and thin-film technology. Then, the transmission and reflection characteristics of the structure are measured by Fourier transform spectrometer. Results show that the grating arrays have good polarization characteristics of the transmission and reflection in terahertz broad-band, and the polarization range can be adjusted by the structural period. Our results provide a reference for the further study and application of THz polarizer.
