Abstract:Conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals has attracted considerable attention as an important method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and also to alleviate the current dependence on fossil fuels. Traditional reducing agent for CO2 reduction relies heavily on gaseous hydrogen from high-pressure cylinder, which meets storage and transportation problem. Moreover, the elaborately prepared and noble-metal involved catalysts are required commonly. Thus, new safe and facile hydrogen source is needed urgently. Hydrous hydrazine, which possesses high hydrogen capacity (7.9%), is regarded as a promising liquid hydrogen storage material. Herein, hydrous hydrazine was employed as an in-situ hydrogen source which possesses high reactive activity for reduction of CO2 under hydrothermal conditions. A 62% yield of formic acid with 99% selectivity was achieved by using a common Ni and ZnO powder catalyst. The proposed method is facile and safe because it requires neither elaborately prepared catalysts, nor high-purity hydrogen and hydrogen storage.

Constructing low-valent Ni nanoparticles for highly selective CO2 reduction

Abstract:The electroreduction of CO2 (CO2RR) into value-added chemicals is a sustainable strategy for mitigating global warming and managing the global carbon balance. However, developing an efficient and selective catalyst is still the central challenge. Here, we developed a simple two-step pyrolysis method to confine low-valent Ni-based nanoparticles within nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni-NC). As a result, such Ni-based nanoparticles can effectively reduce CO2 to CO, with a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98% at an overpotential of 0.8 V, as long as good stability. Experimental and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation results reveal that low-valent Ni plays a key role in activity and selectivity enhancement. This study presents a new understanding of Ni-based CO2RR, and provides a simple, scalable approach to the synthesis of low-valent catalysts towards efficient CO2RR. Abstract:The catalytic conversion of CO2 into high value-added chemical products driven by electricity was an effective strategy to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentration. The development of high efficiency catalysts had always been the core for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. The single transition metal sites anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon showed great potential in CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). In this paper, the atomically dispersed Ni-N sites are constructed on the two-dimensional mesoporous carbon nanosheets by the secondary pyrolysis method. The rich mesoporous structure of the two-dimensional nanosheets is beneficial to CO2 diffusion and adsorption during CO2RR, and the high nitrogen contents could increase the Ni single atom loadings. The nitrogen content and type could be controlled by regulating the ratio of nitrogen source to carbon source, and the catalyst activity is improved as the proportion of nitrogen sources increases. When the ratio of nitrogen source to carbon source is four, the oxidation state of Ni single atoms Ni@NMCN4 is between 0 and +2, and Ni single atoms exists as Ni-N-4 structure with pyridinic N of 32.78 %, which exhibits the best electrochemical CO2RR activity. The active site of Ni@NMCN4 is confirmed as the highly stable Ni single atoms. Moreover, the pyridinic N species are proved to play an important role in enhancing the CO2 electroreduction performance. This work provides a new perspective to adjust the nitrogen content and type in transition metal monatomic-N-doped carbon electrocatalysts for CO2RR.
Atomic-Dispersed Coordinated Unsaturated Nickel–Nitrogen Sites in Hollow Carbon Spheres for the Efficient Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Reducing carbon dioxide to high value-added chemicals is of high importance due to its vital role in mitigating CO2 emission and energy crisis. However, seeking for robust catalysts with low overpotential, high selectivity, and stability is extremely challenging. Herein, a single Ni atom anchored on an N-doped carbon (Ni–N–C) catalyst was designed and prepared via a facile synthesis method to embed highly and evenly dispersed, coordinated unsaturated nickel–nitrogen active sites into a hollow carbon matrix with abundant micropores. The prepared Ni–N–C catalysts possess a unique electronic structure, coordination environment, and maximized atomic utilization, which accordingly show a higher intrinsic activity and remarkable selectivity for the electrochemical reduction of CO2. Additionally, the coordination structure and content of Ni can be easily modulated by changing the calcination temperature, which plays a vital role for the catalytical performance. As a result, the Ni–N–C catalysts achieve over 90% for CO at a wide potential window from −0.6 to −1.0 V with a maximum value of 97% at −0.8 V. Nano-CaCO3 Templated Porous Carbons Anchored with Fe Single Atoms Enable High-Efficiency N2 Electroreduction to NH3

Abstract:The traditional Haber-Bosch N-2 fixation process suffers from rigorous reaction conditions and massive CO2 emission. By contrast, N-2 electroreduction by water to the direct production of NH3 can be conducted at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, and thus has been attracting increasingly attention. Herein, we develop a nano-CaCO3 template route for the synthesis of Fe, N co-doped porous carbon materials from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The Fe atoms are atomically dispersed in the skeleton of carbon and bonded with four nitrogen atoms. Interestingly, the morphology and pore structure of these carbons have notable effects on their performance for the electrocatalytic reduction of N-2. With an optimized morphology and pore structure tuned by the addition of nano-CaCO3 template, the ZIF-8 derived Fe, N co-doped carbon catalyst shows a Faradaic efficiency of 13.14% and a NH3 yield as high as 13.01 mu g h(-1) mg(cat)(-) (1) (-0.2 vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) for N-2 reduction reaction in 0.1 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. Morphology engineering strategy may open a new path to designing and synthesizing high-performance carbon-based catalysts for the electroreduction of N-2 to NH3.

Abstract:Efficient catalytic reduction of the main greenhouse gas CO(2 )into high value-added chemicals is an important measure to alleviate the greenhouse effect and energy depletion. Metal nitrogen (M-N-4) macrocyclic complexes have attracted increasing attention in the field of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2RR) due to the precise adjustment of the catalytic active site according to the requirements and the flexible modification of the external ligand structure. Nevertheless, the poor activity and low selectivity of reduction products restrict their widespread application in electrocatalytic CO2RR. Herein, a combination of nanoscale and molecular level method has been developed to construct easily obtainable 4NH(2)-NiPc/NH2-CNT 2-NiPc/NH2-CNT hybrid material, in which amino groups are connected to provide electrons toward the central Ni-N4 4 site to promote the electrocatalytic CO2RR catalytic activity. As a result, the catalyst 4NH(2)-NiPc/NH2-CNT2-NiPc/NH2-CNT mainly produces CO in the electrocatalytic CO2RR, hich exhibits a Faradaic efficiency of CO (FECO) CO ) higher than 92 % within a wide overpotential range of-0.70 to-0.95 V vs. RHE, and provides excellent stability with a current density of 12 mA cm(-2) at-0.80 V vs. RHE. In addition, 4NH(2)-NiPc/NH2-CNT2-NiPc/NH2-CNT reaches its maximum FECO value of 96 % at-0.8 V vs. RHE, which is approximately 3.1 times that of the original unmodified NiPc/CNT, demonstrating excellent promotion of electrochemical performance. Similarly, compared to NiPc/CNT without amino modification, the current density of 4NH(2)-NiPc/NH2-CNT exceeds it by more than twice. The research results indicate that promoting role of electron substituted amino groups in catalysis dispersion and electronic environment coordination. This study proposes a promising strategy of introducing amino groups into molecular catalysts and hybridizing with carbon nanotube to enhance the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to deep reduction products.

Herein we develop a self-assembly strategy to synthesize a highly efficient CO 2 reduction electrocatalyst with atomically dispersed Ni-N 4 active centers anchored on polymer-derived mesh-like N-doped carbon nanofibers (Ni-N 4 /NC). The Ni-N 4 /NC exhibits high selectivity for CO 2 reduction reaction with CO Faradaic efficiency (CO FE) above 90% over a wide potential range from −0.6 to −1.0 V vs. RHE. The catalyst reaches a maximum CO FE up to 98.4% at −0.8 V with a TOF of 1.28 × 10 5 h −1 and Tafel slope of 113 mV·dec −1 . The catalyst also exhibits remarkable stability, with little change in current density and CO FE over a 10-hour durability test at −0.8 V vs. RHE. This method provides a new route for the synthesis of highly efficient CO 2 reduction electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals with a facile hydrogen source such as water is always of great interest for sustainable development. In this work, a simple and efficient method of reduction of bicarbonate to formate on a simple Ni powder catalyst with water as the facile hydrogen source and Zn as the regenerable reductant is proposed. The Ni catalyst and in situ formed Zn/ZnO exhibited a synergetic catalytic activity in the conversion of bicarbonate into formate, and a good formate yield of 81% was obtained. Detailed studies revealed that the synergetic catalytic activity between Ni and the in situ formed Zn/ZnO was mainly attributed to (i) the inhibited oxidation of Zn by Ni, leading to more interface of Zn/ZnO; (ii) the decreased growth of ZnO crystal along the [0001] direction, and thus increasing the more polar (0001) Zn face and the (0001̅) O face, which have high activity; and (iii) the enhanced generation of more oxygen vacancies at the Zn/ZnO interface to promote the formate yield. This research demonstrates an efficient method of using a simple and nonprecious metal catalyst for the CO2 reduction into value-added chemicals and provides a better understanding of the synergistic catalytic mechanism of Ni and Zn/ZnO.
Cooperative Catalysis of Nickel and Nickel Oxide for Efficient Reduction of CO2 to CH4

Abstract:The use of CO2 to produce value-added energy chemicals is a promising means for renewable CO2 transformation in low-carbon energy system, and CO2 methanation has attracted ever-increasing interest. Herein, we report that the Ni/MCM-41 catalyst with prominent cooperative effect of Ni and NiO is efficient for CH4 generation with CO2 conversion of 73.2 % and CH4 selectivity of 91.6 % at 400 degrees C and high gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 90000 mL g(cat)(-1) h(-1). Combined methodologies of in situ X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reflect the structural evolvements of Ni/MCM-41 catalyst, the presence of carbonyl intermediates, the co-existence of metallic and oxidized Ni species with sufficient molar ratio of Ni-0/Ni2+ under working conditions. H-2 and CO2 molecules are preferentially adsorbed and chemically activated over Ni-0 and Ni2+ species, respectively. The possible four-step reaction mechanism involved carbonyl pathway and the cleavage of C=O bond from CO2 as the rate-determining step over the engineered Ni/MCM-41 catalyst was demonstrated.
Stabilizing the Coordination Environment of Single-Atom Nickel Using Unexposed Nickel Nanoparticles for Enhanced Electrochemical Reduction of CO2

Abstract:Adding Ni nanoparticles (NPs) is an effective methodology to improve the catalytic activity of Ni single-atom catalysts (SACs) in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, the effect of the form in which the Ni NPs exist on the Ni SAs needs further exploration. Herein, the interaction between Ni NPs in different forms of existence and Ni SAs is investigated on g-C3N4-inducing carbon nanosheets. Comparing with the impregnated Ni NPs, the in situ-doped Ni NPs are encapsulated by a graphitic carbon layer to avoid catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and facilitate the adsorption of CO2. Meanwhile, the graphitic carbon layer boosts the catalytic stability of Ni SAs that are recognized as the active sites. As a result, the maximal FECO reaches 98.1% at -0.83 V (vs RHE). The large amount of Ni SAs increases j(CO) to 27.5 mA cm(-2) at -1.13 V (vs RHE). A density functional theory (DFT) simulation confirms that the graphitic carbon layer covering the Ni NPs can reduce the energy barrier of the CO2RR to increase the selectivity on Ni-N-4 sites. The clarification of the reaction mechanism for the graphitic carbon layer induced by Ni NPs paves a new path for the rational design of Ni SA-dominated catalysts for highly efficient CO2 reduction.

Abstract:A nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CuNi bimetallic nanocluster catalyst (CuNi-NC) was first synthesized via a facile ZIF-derived method. With a synergistic effect between Cu and Ni, the catalyst exhibited a maximum FECO of 96.3%. FECO is higher than 90% in a broad potential range of 600 mV, which was ascribed to the controllable pore size distribution. Density functional theory further demonstrated the preferred formation of *COOH in the catalytic process.

Abstract:Electro-chemically reducing CO2 in a highly acidic medium is promising for addressing the issue of carbonate accumulation. However, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) typically dominates the acidic CO2 reduction. Herein, we construct an efficient electro-catalyst for CO formation based on a core-shell structure, where nitrogen-doped Ni nanoparticles coexist with nitrogen-coordinated Ni single atoms. The optimal catalyst demonstrates a significantly improved CO faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.7 % in the acidic electrolyte (pH=1) at an industrial-scale current density of 500 mA cm-2 . Notably, the optimal catalyst maintains a high FE of CO exceeding 90 % (current density=500 mA cm-2 ) in the electrolyte with a wide pH range from 0.67 to 14. In-situ spectroscopic characterization and density functional theory calculations show that the local electron density of Ni-N-C sites is enhanced by N-doped Ni particles, which facilitates the formation of *COOH intermediate and the adsorption of *CO. This study demonstrates the potential of a hybrid metal/Ni-N-C interface in boosting acidic CO2 electro-reduction.

Abstract:Single atom Fe-N-C based electrocatalysts are the most promising candidates for industrial applications of reduction of CO2. However, preparation of Fe-N-C catalyst often involves complex procedures and expensive precursors/reagents. In this work, we developed a novel one-step calcination method to tailor single-atom Fe-N-C catalyst for CO2 reduction. The maximum Faraday efficiency of CO (FECO) and the Tafel slope of Fe-N-C material was 73% and 68 mv dec−1, respectively, which was much higher than that of the pristine N-C material. The CO2 electroreduction products were CO and H2 with a total Faraday efficiency of 100%, indicating that the Fe-N-C material had high selectivity on CO2 reduction to CO. The designed Fe-Nx structure on the Fe-N-C material acted as a highly active site, and the abundant functional groups and microporous structure resulted in high catalytic performance of Fe-N-C material. This work demonstrates that the tailored single-atom Fe-N-C catalyst by one-step calcination has broad application prospects in the electrochemical reduction of CO2.

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Materials for the Metal-Free Reduction of Nitro Compounds

Abstract:In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon materials (labeled as NC-T) were easily prepared by thermal treatment of the melamine-chitosan composite. NC-T catalysts demonstrated good activity toward the reduction of nitro compounds by using hydrazine hydrate (N2H4·H2O) as the reductant. The activity of NC-T enhanced with the rise of the pyrolysis temperature because of the enhanced ratio of graphitic-type nitrogen, which might be the active sites for the reduction of nitro compounds. NC-950 showed high activity for the selective reduction of nitro compounds in hexane to produce amines at yields from 87.5 to 100% at 90 °C using 2 equiv of N2H4·H2O. The NC-950 catalyst demonstrated comparable or even higher catalytic activity in comparison with the reported metal catalysts. The hydrogenation of nitro compounds with N2H4·H2O proceeded via the direct way involving hydroxylamine as the reaction intermediate.

Abstract:Ammonia as a chemical substance is closely related to our daily life , its production process has attracted researchers' attention. Due to its high energy consumption , high emission characteristics, the industrial Haber-Bosch process obviously cannot adapt to the sustainable development concept of low-carbon and environmental protection in today's society. The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) technology is a promising method of converting unstable electrical energy into fuel for storage at ambient conditions. Here, a bimetallic catalyst, Co-Ni-S/Ni foam, is reported as an electro-catalyst to realize N-2 reduction. The in-situ growth strategy promotes the effective combination of Co9S8 and Ni3S2 on the Ni foam without any adhesive. The active centers of the bimetallic Co and Ni reasonably regulate the adsorption of various complex intermediates in the N-2 activation process, so that the Co-Ni-S/Ni foam has good N-2 activity. In 0.1 M Na2SO4, the designed electrocatalyst achieved an NH3 yield of 5.05 x 10(-10) mol s(-1) cm(-2) at -0.6 V vs. RHE and an optimum Faradaic efficiency of 6.23% with good electrochemical stability and selectivity.
