Abstract:A method of uniform illumination for digital volume holographic storage system is proposed based on the speckle modulation technique by using a band-limited diffuser. The special diffuser is placed at a distance before the object plane to make the illumination light uniform, with approximate 4% rms power variation. Furthermore, vibrating the diffuser can help to reduce the speckle noise that roots in the Fourier imaging and recording system. The experimental results are given and it is shown that this method can reach a low raw bit error rate for the stored binary pages.

Abstract:An effective application of band-limited diffuser is introduced to realize the dual-wavelength method which can reduce the grating decay while retrieving data in the volume holographic data storage. The Diffuser combined with the imaging system can generate enough wavefronts to match the Brag conditions of all the pixels in the whole image when two wavelengths are used. It is possible to enlarge the size of the retrieved image and get an approximately uniform diffraction efficiency. Experimental setup is presented and the results show that this technique is effective.

Abstract:Rainbow holography is a major method in white-light holography,which is lack of vertical parallax due to introducing a slit that reduces the view zone of reconstructed images in recording process.A Fresnel hologram without slit simulation is computed by Burch coding,and displayed on liquid crystal display(LCD) as video frequency signals;color reconstructed images with full parallax are obtained by white-light illumination.By adjusting sample interval and pinhole filter to reduce color blurring and enhance the spatial coherence of reconstructed light,reconstructed images with much wider vertical view zone are achieved comparing with the results of rainbow computer-generated hologram(CGH),though the image quality of the former is a little worse than the later for the money.Not only the whole system is simple and easy operated,but also the reconstructed images have large view zone in favor of observing and receiving.Wide-spectrum light source and the spatial light modulator are used in this system,which is ready for the development of real-time three-dimensional(3D) color digital holography.
Uniform Diffraction Efficiency for Three-Dimensional Dynamic-Static Speckle Multiplexing Holographic Storage

Abstract:We analyse and optimize the exposure-schedule of three-dimensional dynamic-static speckle multiplexing (DSSM) schemes. The uniform diffraction efficiency for the DSSM volume holographic storage system is realized in an ion and indium doped LiNbO3 crystal. An overlap-factor matrix is introduced into the system to compensate for the complex erasure effects caused by the static speckle multiplexing. We obtain 100 holograms demonstrating the exposure-schedule theory. The uniformity of the diffraction efficiency is improved by about 8%.

Abstract:An exposure-schedule theory of uniform diffraction efficiency for a Dynamic-Static speckle multiplexing (DSSM) volume holographic storage system is proposed. The overlap-factor (? overlap) is introduced into the system to compensate for the erasure effect of the static speckle multiplexing scheme. The exposure-schedule which is an inverse recursion formula is determined. Experimental results are obtained in a LiNbO(3):Fe crystal and 400 holograms with uniform diffraction efficiency are achieved by the use of the new exposure-schedule.

Abstract:A recording method to suppress the zero-order diffraction term in an off-axial digital hologram and to improve its effective bandwidth is proposed.The method records the hologram on the condition that the reference intensity is more stronger than that of the object.Then,the recorded hologram is normalized by the recorded reference intensity beforehand.The natural logarithm operation and Hilbert transform are applied to the normal hologram to suppress the zero-order diffraction and the object complex field is recovered by an exponential operation.The theory of the method is analyzed.It shows that the logarithm operation can suppress the zero-order term and the Hilbert transform can filter the desired term.Finally,the experiments are performed to validate the method.The results show that the method can suppress the zero-order diffraction term efficiently even in the case of the strong spectral overlap between the zero-order term and the diffraction orders.The influence of the intensity ratio of the light of reference to that of object on the suppression efficient of zero-order diffraction term is analyzed.It shows that the zero-order term can be efficiently suppressed through the proposed method when the intensity ratio is above 5.
Speckle Suppression in Arbitrary Parallel Holographic Illumination by the Spatial Frequency Regaining Method.

Abstract:This Letter proposes a spatial frequency regaining method for parallel holographic illumination (SFR-PHI) to suppress speckle noise in phase-only computer-generated holography (CGH). Based on the accurate calculation of the beam bandwidth, this method uses the bandwidth-limited quadratic initial phase and weighted constraint iteration to generate the optimized phase hologram, which can provide the accurate spatial frequency of multiple illumination patterns. The results show that SFR-PHI performs superiorly in speckle suppression for generating dozens of illumination patterns in parallel and with arbitrary shapes and numbers. Compared with other speckle-suppression methods, it exhibits significant advantages in terms of accuracy and modulation efficiency.

Abstract:Dynamic speckle multiplexing scheme in volume holographic data storage is proposed, since it offers a novel multiplexing geometry, and could be combined with other schemes to make the full use of the dynamic ranges. In this scheme, a random diffuser is added in the original reference path of the classical 90 masculine setup. In this paper, we analyzed the propagation of the speckle field in the holographic system and established the related theoretical model based on the dynamic speckle auto-correlation function and diffraction theory. We successfully realized the dynamic speckle multiplexing in our experimental system and reached a storage density of 4.6 Gigapixels/cm3 based on the DPL laser source.

Abstract:Correlation selectivity of the speckle encoding method with a diffuser in the reference beam or the object beam for volume holographic storage system is analyzed. Unlike Bragg selectivity, correlation selectivity has no sidelobes and does not depend on the thickness of the recording medium. Thus the intrapage crosstalk can be greatly suppressed. For a volume holographic memory, the reference beam is modulated with the diffuser, which can sharpen the diffraction efficiency curve (versus the angular deviation). It helps increase the storage density and improve the quality of the reconstructions. For a volume holographic correlator, the signal beam is modulated with the diffuser, which can sharpen the correlation peak and suppress the correlation sidelobes. It helps improve the parallelism and accuracy of the holographic correlator. It is shown that the diffuser techniques are effective and feasible to improve the performance of the volume holographic storage and correlation system.

Abstract:In the holographic data storage system, a shifting diffuser is employed in the reference beam to realize dynamic speckle multiplexing, while another vibrating diffuser is placed in the object beam to realize speckle modulation. These two methods can enlarge the storage capacity with high signal-to-noise rate. Speckle multiplexing can suppress the crosstalk due to multiple longitudinal modes of the small DPL laser. And speckle modulation in volume holographic correlators can suppress the diffraction sidelobes of output correlation signal along both vertical and horizontal direction. Another advantage of the speckle multiplexing and the speckle modulation is that the angular selectivity and the correlation peak are not sensitive to the thickness of the hologram. Finally a demonstration platform of compact holographic storage and correlation recognition system is briefly introduced in this paper.
Improvement to Holographic Digital Data Storage System with Partially Coherent Light

Abstract:In holographic memory the coherent interference recording is necessary. However, for a good image quality with speckle reduction in the imaging system, partial coherence or incoherence of the light source is desired. In this paper, the influence of coherence properties of the object and reference beams on the characteristics of the images stored and retrieved is discussed. During the recording process, using a vibrating uniform band-limited diffuser, a proper partial coherence is maintained and image detail down to the diffraction limit of the imaging system is preserved. In the readout process, serial pages near the Bragg condition are retrieved for the average processing. These methods are very effective to reduce the speckle noise and to achieve a low raw bit error rate. The coherence length required for holography is also discussed when we choose a compact low-cost laser source.

Abandoning the traditional methods, we proposed an LED color-mixing method that can produce both high color uniformity and irradiance uniformity illumination. This method is composed of two main aspects: arrangement of the irradiance array and design of the LED lens. With this method, an independent rectangular irradiance distribution is generated by each lens unit, and the large-scale color uniform illumination is obtained by arraying the irradiance distribution. A 3 x 3 array of LED module units consisting of 36 LED lens units with four different colors is designed, and a desired result with high color uniformity is obtained. A Novel Speckle Angular-Shift Multiplexing for High-Density Holographic Storage

Abstract:The volume holographic optical data storage has been an important and exciting area of research. Recently the more interested study for a high-density holographic memory is focused on the speckle wave used as the coded reference wave in various multiplexing techniques. In this paper, a novel speckle holographic storage scheme is proposed, which a random phase diffuser is added in the front of storage medium along the reference optical path of the original 90 degree storage geometry. In this scheme the incident angle of the reference beam and the place of the random phase diffuser illuminated by the reference beam can be changed simultaneously. The joint action of these changes generated a dynamic speckle wave for the reference beam in holographic storage. A theoretical model has been derived to describe the storage properties of this scheme based on the cross-correlation of dynamic speckle and the diffractive theory. The storage density influenced by the properties of the speckle patterns has been analyzed and experimentally confirmed. The results indicate that this scheme allows an increase in the data storage density with simple storage-retrieval architecture.

Abstract:The volume holographic optical data storage has been an important and exciting area of research on account of its promising super high density and fast data transfer rate. Recently, much attention has been paid to the novel speckle multiplexing, which has the potential of increasing the current storage density prominently. As is well known, cross talk between holographic gratings is a vital factor that may influence the storage density of hologram. In this paper, we analyzed the cross talk of the speckle-angular multiplexing scheme, in which a random diffuser is added in the front of storage medium along the reference optical path of the original 90-degree storage geometry. And compared it with that of the original angular multiplexing scheme, both theoretically and experimentally. The results indicate that this novel scheme could not only increase the storage density but also decrease the cross talks in the system.

Abstract:Holographic speckle screens with the Gaussian type distribution of scattered light, which are used to increase the viewing angle of the image in projection display systems, result in nonuniform image brightness in different observing positions. In this study, based on Helmholtz-Kirchhoff theory, a dual-beam scattering theory of rough surface is derived. By analyzing the spatial frequency spectrum of the scattered light, it is found that when two laser beams irradiated the ground glass at a certain angle, the resulting speckles recorded on the photoresist can generate a flat-top angular distribution of the scattered light. Speckle screens are fabricated by two light beams at different angles, and the angular intensity distribution of scattered light is measured. The results are in good agreement with the theory. Compared with the Gaussian type diffuser, the energy efficiency of the speckle screen proposed has a 46% increase when the angular luminance uniformity is set to be 80%, which effectively improves the brightness when used in a head up display system.
