Abstract:Abstract Room temperature phosphorescence materials have inspired extensive attention owing to their great potential in optical applications. However, it is hard to achieve a room temperature phosphorescence material with simultaneous long lifetime and high phosphorescence quantum efficiency. Herein, multi-confined carbon dots were designed and fabricated, enabling room temperature phosphorescence material with simultaneous ultralong lifetime, high phosphorescence quantum efficiency, and excellent stability. The multi-confinement by a highly rigid network, stable covalent bonding, and 3D spatial restriction efficiently rigidified the triplet excited states of carbon dots from non-radiative deactivation. The as-designed multi-confined carbon dots exhibit ultralong lifetime of 5.72 s, phosphorescence quantum efficiency of 26.36%, and exceptional stability against strong oxidants, acids and bases, as well as polar solvents. This work provides design principles and a universal strategy to construct metal-free room temperature phosphorescence materials with ultralong lifetime, high phosphorescence quantum efficiency, and high stability for promising applications, especially under harsh conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Room temperature afterglow materials have received widespread attention and application in anti‐counterfeiting, imaging, and other fields, but the many shortcomings of traditional afterglow materials in terms of cost, environment, and synthesis methods have limited their development. In contrast, carbon dot materials have attracted more and more research due to their numerous advantages and great potential for development. However, the preparation of carbon dot materials with phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence afterglow emission capabilities remains a difficult task. In this study, a series of long life afterglow carbon dot composites with single‐mode and dual‐mode afterglow emission were successfully prepared by inserting carbon dots synthesized from glucose and glycine into boric acid matrix through a two‐step hydrothermal method. This series of carbon dot composites has achieved a transformation from single‐mode phosphorescent emission to unique dual‐mode afterglow emission, allowing for efficient environmental response color modulation. The composites display different afterglow emissions dominated by either phosphorescent or delayed fluorescence at different temperatures. Based on their excellent temperature sensitivity, a single‐mode long phosphorescence with a lifetime of 1.62 seconds was achieved at low temperature. In summary, we have discovered a convenient and efficient method to achieve dual‐mode emission by adjusting the matrix proportion.

Facile Synthesis and Multiple Application of Ultralong-Afterglow Room Temperature Phosphorescence Aggregate Carbon Dots from Simple Raw Materials

Abstract:Owing to the ultralong afterglow, room temperature decay phosphorescence nanomaterials have aroused enough attention. In the work, by simple one-pot solid-state thermal decomposition reaction, aggregate carbon dots (CDs) was prepared from trimesic and boric acid. Based on the intermolecular hydrogen bonds and intramolecular π-π stacking weak interaction from precursors, CDs was encapsulated in boron oxide matrix and formed aggregation. The aggregate state of CDs facilitated the triplet excited states (Tn), which could induce the room temperature decay phosphorescence properties. By careful investigation, under different excitation wavelengths at 254 and 365 nm, the aggregate CDs showed > 15 s and > 3 s room temperature phosphorescence emission in the naked eye, which was associated with 1516.12 ms and 718.62 ms lifetime respectively. And the aggregate CDs exhibited widespread application in encoding encryption, optical anti-counterfeiting and fingerprint identification etc. The interesting aggregate CDs revealed unexpected ultralong-afterglow room temperature decay phosphorescence properties and the work opened a window for constructing ultralong-afterglow room temperature decay phosphorescence aggregate CDs nanomaterials.
Efficient Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots in Composite Matrices

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have various attractive properties and potential applications, but there is much less attention paid to their phosphorescent phenomenon and mechanism. Herein, we prepared a kind of highly efficient CD-based phosphorescent material by a subtle design method that incorporated N-doped CDs (NCDs) into composite matrices (the melting recrystallization urea and biuret from the heating urea) by a one-pot heating treatment for the mixture of urea and NCDs. Through systematic investigation, C=N bonds on the surface of the NCDs can create new energy level structures, and for the first time, evidence that shows they are the origin of phosphorescence is presented. Composite matrices play a dual role to suppress the vibrational dissipation of long-lived triplets by combining the rigidity of the melting recrystallization urea and hydrogen bonding between biuret and NCDs, which have obvious advantages over a single-component matrix. The results show the obtained materials have an ultralong phosphorescent lifetime of 1.06 s under 280 nm excitation and a high phosphorescent quantum yield of 7% under 360 nm excitation in air, which are the highest values recorded for the CD-based materials. These CD-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials have also shown potential in white light-emitting diodes and data security.

Abstract:In this study, carbon dot‐based phosphorescent composites prepared from urea and 3‐aminophenylboronic acid by constructing a rigid hydrogen‐bonded network structure in an aqueous environment exhibited an ultra‐long phosphorescence emission lifetime (2.35 s) and a high pH stability with an afterglow time of more than 50 s. Long‐lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have many potential applications in areas such as luminescent lighting, biological imaging, and information security owing to their unique optical properties. However, traditional RTP materials are challenged by the fact that their phosphorescence can be easily quenched by dissolved oxygen and solvent‐assisted relaxation, making it difficult for them to emit phosphorescence in aqueous solutions, particularly in extreme pH environments. In this study, a multicolor RTP carbon dot‐based composite material (u‐CDs) is developed with urea and 3‐aminophenylboronic acid as raw materials. This material exhibits ultra‐long phosphorescence emission lifetime and high pH stability by constructing a rigid hydrogen bond network structure in an aqueous environment. The u‐CDs have an optimal emission of 448 nm, a quantum yield of 21.6%, a phosphorescence lifetime of 2.35 s, and an afterglow time of more than 50 s. With such unique properties, u‐CDs have great potential for applications in anti‐counterfeiting, information encryption, and 3D printing.

Abstract:Advances in polymeric matrices with ultralong and color-tunable phosphorescence were recently made, but their luminescence mechanism was not yet thoroughly understood. The current experimental and theoretical studies show that the red-shift of phosphorescence spectrum is caused by increasing the C–N and C=O of carbon dots in the polymeric matrix In addition, theoretical calculations explain the charge transfer and spin orbit coupling of carbon dots in a system containing different covalent bonds . The phosphorescence emission color and lifetime can be modulated, which is applied into triple anti-counterfeiting of photo-stimulated-dependent color, time-dependent color, and time-dependent phosphorescence lifetime. In the application, the phosphorescence color of carbon dots in the polymeric matrix can be varied from deep blue (431 nm) to red (620 nm) with a maximal lifetime of 2.02 s and a maximum phosphorescence quantum yield of 20.1%. This work provides a new direction for the development of carbon dots with efficient and color-tunable ultra-long phosphorescence.

Abstract:A new kind of carbon dots based phosphor is developed for light emitting diodes (LED) by adsorbing carbon dots to starch particles. The bonding mechanism is based on hydrogen bonding of surface functional groups of carbon dots and starch particles. Aggregation-induced quenching is avoided and the thermal stability of the carbon dots phosphor is enhanced. The carbon dots phosphor is used as color convert material for white LED devices. The white LED device fabricated has an ultra-high color rendering index of 93.9, almost pure white CIE coordinate at (0.332, 0.336) and moderate CCT at 5498 K. The photoluminescence intensity (PL) under constant temperature and alternative condition is both tested to study the thermal stability of the phosphor. The PL intensity shows no obvious change after 3 days of aging; only 4% of PL loss after 10 cycles of 25 °C /85 °C alternation. Based on its good PL properties and thermal stability, this carbon dots phosphor has great potential for white LED lighting.

Abstract:Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has distinctive advantages over the fluorescence counterparts, such as larger Stokes shifts and longer lifetimes. It is challenging to design and prepare RTP carbon dots (CDs) because many of them need appropriate solid matrix or introducing heavy atoms for promoting intersystem crossing and suppressing vibrational dissipation between singlet and triplet states. In this paper, long-lived RTP carbon dots (EDA-CDs) were synthesized by microwave-assisted pyrolysis of ethylenediamine (EDA) in phosphoric acid solution. Interestingly, at room temperature, bright phosphorescence was observed for EDA-CDs embedded in filter paper and presenting as solid powder, and could last for 7 s to naked eyes, with the phosphorescence lifetime being up to 693.67 and 887.55 ms, respectively. At low temperature of 123 K, the phosphorescence lifetime of EDA-CDs in solid solution can reach the highest value of 1538 ms, while the phosphorescence lifetime of EDA-CDs presenting as solid powder is 1287.54 ms. It can be deduced that robust bridge-like hydrogen-bonded networks formed by highly ordered hydration water molecules around EDA-CDs in solid solution at low temperature are beneficial for rigidifying the surface groups of EDA-CDs and thus the longer phosphorescence lifetime. Finally, RTP EDA-CDs had shown a great potential to be as advanced security ink for information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:A vacuum‐heating approach is demonstrated for large‐scale production of over ten grams per batch. The as‐prepared carbon dots (C‐dots) exhibit multiple room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emissions (blue, green, and yellow) and a long RTP lifetime of 1.92 s with a maximum quantum yield of 34.4%. As a proof‐of‐concept, the as‐synthesized RTP C‐dots are used as ink for flexible security codes, exhibiting a bright shape with a lifetime of 1.37 s. Colloidal carbon dots (C‐dots) are considered as promising heavy‐metal‐free materials to achieve room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties for promising applications, such as photoelectronic devices, information encryption, and bio‐imaging. However, most of the current obtained RTP C‐dots have a short lifetime with a relatively low quantum yield (QY). In this work, the C‐dots large‐scale synthesized via a vacuum heating approach have multiple RTP emissions (blue, green, and yellow), a long RTP lifetime of as high as 1.92 s, and a high QY of 34.4% by selecting different types of precursors, which is superior to most of reported RTP C‐dots. The multiple atoms doping and strong bonding between neighbored C‐dots promoted by vacuum heating contributes to the excellent RTP properties. As a proof‐of‐concept, the as‐obtained RTP C‐dots are used as optical ink for flexible security codes, exhibiting a bright shape with a lifetime of 1.37 s. This work offers an efficient approach for producing large‐scale high‐quality RTP C‐dots, which can be applied to anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption systems.

Abstract:Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is important in both organic electronics and encryption. Despite rapid advances, a universal approach to robust and tunable RTP materials based on amorphous polymers remains a formidable challenge. Here, we present a strategy that uses three-dimensional (3D) confinement of carbon dots in a polymer network to achieve ultra-long lifetime phosphorescence. The RTP of the as-obtained materials was not quenched in different polar organic solvents and the lifetime of the RTP was easily tuned by adjusting the amount of crosslinking or varying the drying temperature of the 3D molecular network. As a demonstration of potential application, as-obtained RTP materials were successfully used to prepare RTP fibres for flexible textiles. As well as bringing to light a fundamental principle for the construction of polymer materials with RTP, we have endowed traditional carbon dots and polymers with fresh features that will expand potential applications.

Abstract:Developing room‐temperature phosphorescent carbon dots with extended afterglow and multicolor emission is challenging. This work proposes a novel strategy using o‐phenylenediamine and polyacrylic acid to synthesize carbonized polymer dots embedded in B2O3 matrix. The resulting materials exhibit dual‐emitting ultralong phosphorescence in blue and lime green shades under different UV excitations, with a remarkable phosphorescence lifetime of up to 49 s and potential applications in anticounterfeiting and information encryption. Advancing a metal‐free room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) material that exhibits multicolor emission, remarkable RTP lifetime, and high quantum yield still faces the challenge of achieving intersystem crossing between singly and triplet excited states, as well as the rapid decay of triplet excited states due to nonradiative losses. In this study, a novel strategy is proposed to address these limitations by incorporating o‐phenylenediamine, which generates multiple luminescent centers, and long‐chain polyacrylic acid to synthesize carbonized polymer dots (CPDs). These CPDs are then embedded in a rigid B2O3 matrix, effectively limiting nonradiative losses through the synergistic effects of polymer cross‐linking and the rigid matrix. The resulting CPD‐based materials exhibit remarkable ultralong phosphorescence in shades of blue and lime green, with a visible lifetime of up to 49 s and a high phosphorescence quantum yield. Simultaneously, this study demonstrates the practical applicability of these excellent material properties in anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption.

Abstract:Efficient solid-state room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) carbon dots (CDs) usually need to be embedded by a matrix to suppress the vibration dissipation between triplet and singlet states. However, selecting a suitable matrix is time-consuming, and the preparation process is often complicated. Here, we adopted a simple one-step hydrothermal method to obtain matrix-free solid-state RTP CDs with a long lifetime (1.22 s) and high fluorescence quantum yield (21.6%) by selecting suitable chain-like structure molecules for dehydration condensation and carbonization. The main source of RTP is the n-pi* transition of C=O/C=N on the surface of CDs. The polymer chain structure effectively avoids the disordered collision of CDs during curing. The formed cross-linked network structure helps stabilize the excited triplet state and provides a rigid environment to prevent the triplet state excitons from being quenched by ambient oxygen. The facile preparation process and efficient RTP properties provide a new idea for researching and developing matrix-free CDs.

Abstract:Efficient room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is rarely observed from rare metal or halogen free polymer materials. However, we have newly observed that Zn2+ doped sodium carboxymethyl cellulose emitting long-lasting phosphorescence at room temperature. It is ascribed to restricted molecular motions (RMM) from strong ionic band and abundant hydrogen bond in crystalline states. Such intermolecular and intramolecular interactions greatly rigidify the molecular conformation and drastically decrease the nonradiative deactivation channels of the triplet excitons, thus phosphorescent emission is greatly boosted at room temperature. The photoluminescence quantum yield and phosphorescence life time of Zn2+ doped carboxymethyl cellulose composites are up to 16.5% and 281 ms, respectively.
Long-lived Room-temperature Phosphorescent Complex of B, N, P co-doped Carbon Dots and Silica for Afterglow Imaging

Abstract:Room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials based on carbon dots (CDs) have attracted abundant attention in bioimaging owing to their long lifetimes and wide Stokes shift, which can reduce the autofluorescence and light scattering in tissue. Although solid-state RTP CDs have been widely reported at present, long-lived RTP CDs in aqueous solutions still remain a challenge because they are usually quenched by oxygen in water. This work develops a heteroatom doping strategy to synthesize long-lived matrix-free phosphorescent B, N, P co-doped CDs (B, N, P-CDs) with cross-linked structure and rich hydrogen bonding network. B, N, P-CDs have an ultralong phosphorescence lifetime of 1.89 s. Subsequently, the complex of B, N, P co-doped CDs and silica (B, N, 2 ) was further obtained by coating the surfaces of B, N, P-CDs with silica by sol-gel method to further confine their molecular vibrations and rotations, which shows an excellent RTP property in aqueous solution with a phosphorescent lifetime of 1.97 s. In addition, the complex displays good biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and ability of phosphorescent labeling cells and organism. All these results extend a potential application of the B, N, 2 complex as phosphorescent bioimaging probe.

The Synthesis and Application of Excitation-Dependent Ultra-long Lifetime Room Temperature Phosphorescence Carbon Dots Composite

Abstract:Recently, room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have gained widespread attention owning to their superior photophysical properties. However, it is still a challenge to realize color-tunable RTP with ultra-long lifetime in the same material through a simple strategy. Herein, we report an excitation-dependent ultra-long lifetime RTP carbon dots (CDs) composite though embedding N, O-doped CDs into insoluble phosphate (IP) matrix (named N, O-CDs@IP). The formation of C=P covalent bonds of suppresses the non-radiative transition of triplet exciton and therefore activates chromogenic functional group C=O. The N, O-CDs@IP composite exhibits excitation-dependent phosphorescence. With the excitation wavelength increases from 254 to 365 nm, the phosphorescence emission varies from cyan (482 nm) to green (518 nm) with ultra-long lifetimes of 2.04 s and 1.15 s, respectively. The phosphorescence quantum efficiencies at 482 and 518 nm are 24.7 % and 19.88 %, respectively. The excitation-dependent phosphorescence would be caused by the excitation transfer paths are different from S1 to T1 that the energy levels are different under different excitation wavelengths in the aggregated state. Our synthesized N, O-CDs@IP can be used in fingerprint identification and anti-counterfeiting. It indicates the N, O-CDs@IP composite has great potential in intelligent coding and advanced information encryption.

Abstract:As an emerging class of luminescent materials, Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted tremendous attention in the metal-free room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) material, but the methods to enhance the emission intensity and prolonging the lifetime of RTP CDs were seldom reported. Herein, we developed a method to improve the emission intensity and increase the lifetime of green RTP CDs. The RTP lifetime of CDs has been extended about 12-fold (from 45 to 550 ms) through introducing polymer and the secondary modification of urea realized by means of heat treatment. Moreover, the emission intensity of RTP CDs has been increased about 20 times. It has been found that the improvement of RTP lifetime and emission intensity is benefited from the decreasing vibration and rotation of the excited triplet species, thus suppressing the non-radiative transitions. Furthermore, the prepared CDs with strong RTP both exhibit great potential in light-emitting diodes and anti-counterfeiting application.

Abstract:C-dot-based composites with phosphorescence have been widely reported due to their attractive potential in various applications. But easy quenching of phosphorescence induced by oxygen or instability of matrices remained a tricky problem. Herein, we reported a Si-doped-CD (Si-CD)-based RTP materials with long lifetime by embedding Si-CDs in sulfate crystalline matrices. The resultant Si-CD@sul fate composites exhibited a long lifetime up to 1.07 s, and outstanding stability under various ambient conditions. The intriguing RTP phenomenon was attributed to the C = O bond and the doping of Si element due to the fact that sulfates could effectively stabilize the triplet states of Si-CDs, thus enabling the intersystem crossing (ISC). Meanwhile, we confirmed that the ISC process and phosphorescence emission could be effectively regulated based on the heavy atom effect. This research introduced a new perspective to develop materials with regulated RTP performance and high stability.
