Abstract:Layered materials with strong interlayer interaction have gained tremendous attention for accessing two-dimensional (2D) structures, since the charged layers with diverse dangling bonds enrich such atomic-thick structures with exotic properties and versatile functionalization [1–3]. However, unlike van der Waals (vdW) materials that can be directly torn by various routes, the stronger interactions between neighboring layers make them more difficult to laminate. As a result, current way to exfoliate these non-vdW layered materials typically results in 2D sheets with composition and structure that are significantly different from their parent bulk [4,5], greatly limiting further exploration of their intrinsic features under quantum-confinement effect. Very recently, Wu and co-workers [6] from University of Science and Technology of China demonstrated the successful exfoliation of non-vdW AMX2 (A = monovalent metal, M = trivalent metal, X = chalcogen) compounds into stoichiometric 2D sheets, which adopts a similar composition and structure as that in the bulk. They proposed a redoxcontrolled strategy to precisely control the amount and extent for A metal extraction and thus enable less A ions to be etched. Taking AgCrS2 as an example, the as-exfoliated nanosheets exhibit large lateral size and high quality (Figure 1a). Prominently, the structure consists of an Ag layer sandwiched between two CrS2 layers (Figure 1b) and adopts the formula AgnCrn+1S2(n+1) (where n is the number of Ag layers) even when thinned down to the monolayer. In contrast to previous routes used for exfoliating non-vdW solids, which will substantially sacrifice chemically-active layers, the Ag layer in resultant AgCrS2 nanosheets is integrally preserved between CrS2 layers, providing an ideal platform to explore their intrinsic properties. It is known that bulk AgCrS2 exhibits superionic behavior as the temperature above 673 K, while Ag ion distribution undergoes an order–disorder transition [7]. However, the author found Ag ions are randomly occupied by two sets of tetrahedral sites of monolayer AgCrS2 (Figure 1c), which implies that it already becomes superionic at room temperature when the thickness is reduced into 2D limit. Electrochemical impedance measurements further indicate AgCrS2 to be with monotonic increment of ionic conductance as its layer number decreases and finally transform into superionic state. As a result, AgCrS2 nanosheets show high conductivity of 33.2 mS cm at 298 K (Figure 1d, e), which is three orders of magnitude higher than bulk (0.021 mS cm). In order to better understand the fast ionic transport in the 2D sheets, they performed theoretical calculation and manifested that the migration barrier was significantly reduced after thinned down. It thus can be seen that the superionic transition can not only be achieved by annealing, but also through the thickness reduction strategy. In conclusion, this work introduces a reliable route to produce 2D non-vdW layered materials, and adds new members to 2D family. Similar to vdW materials, such as graphite and transition metal dichalcogenides, non-vdW solids also emerge exotic thickness-dependent properties. Therefore, more insight should be provided to fully study and explore 2D materials beyond weak interlayer interactions.
