Abstract:Nanochannels fabricated from the aggregation of charged amphiphilic nanoparticles are of growing interest. The nanochannel size can be further affected by electrostatic interactions between these nanoparticles and metal cations. Herein, size-tunable nanochannels (from 0.5 to 1.4 nm in average) are obtained via regulating the aggregation of anionic nanoparticles using sulfonated polysulfone (SP SF) nanoparticles as a model. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images and dynamic light scattering (DLS) curves show the aggregates of SPSF nanoparticles in a wide range from nanoscale to micrometer-scale via adding different metal cations. Further analysis of the nanochannels shows the quantitative correlation between ionic strength of metal cations (ISMC) and nanochannel size. Preliminary evaluation of the size-tunable nanochannels exhibits a good separation performance with the Na2SO4 rejection of 98.3% and water flux of 5.8 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1), indicating a high level among the reported researches.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of thiol on nanoparticle size and structure is essential for the fundamental and applied researches. Here, using x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, we investigate the structural order of Au nanoparticles (NPs) in the protection of thiol ligands with different contents. We found that besides protecting Au NPs against aggregation and growth, thiolates can effectively eliminate the dangling bonds of unsaturated Au atoms, and thus increase the structural order. This work enriches our knowledge of Au-S interface interaction and guides the way towards preparing size-controllable nanoparticles with specific physical/ chemical properties.

Abstract:Thiol-etching triphenylphosphine (PPh3)-protected Au nanoclusters has been widely used to synthesize thiolated Au nanoclusters, while few studies have been reported on the thiol-etching reaction starting from diphosphine-protected Au clusters. Here the thiol-etching reaction in chloroform (CHCl3) for 1,5-Bis(diphenylphosphino) pentane (L5) protected Au11 nanoclusters is presented, and synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption fine structure, UV–vis absorption and mass spectra are combined to identify the reaction products. It is revealed that a gold(I)-thiolate complex Au2L5(RS) is produced, contrary to the case of thiol-etching PPh3-protected Au clusters where formation of thermodynamically stable Au25 or Au11 clusters is achieved.
Selective Shortening of Single-Crystalline Gold Nanorods by Mild Oxidation

Abstract:Gold nanorods (NRs) have received much attention due to their size-dependent surface plasmon-related optical properties. A seed-mediated approach has recently been developed for the synthesis of Au NRs with varying length-to-diameter aspect ratios. With the introduction of silver ions in the growth solution, Au NRs of narrow size distributions can be produced in high yields. Herein we describe an approach for the continuous and selective shortening of Au NRs synthesized by the silver ion-assisted seed-mediated method through oxidation with environmentally benign oxygen at slightly elevated temperatures. UV-visible extinction measurements indicate that the longitudinal surface plasmon band of Au NRs decreases in intensity and blue-shifts as a function of the oxidation time. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging shows that the length of Au NRs decreases with oxidation and their diameter stays almost constant, which suggests that oxidation starts at the ends of Au NRs. The size distributions of shortened Au NRs are similar to those of starting NRs. Further oxidation transforms Au NRs into nanospheres, which become smaller in diameter and finally completely disappear. It has been found that the oxidation rate of Au NRs can be controlled by temperature and acid concentration. Furthermore, high-resolution TEM studies reveal that Au NRs synthesized by the silver ion-assisted seed-mediated method are single crystalline and they stay single crystalline during oxidation. It is expected that Au NRs of any aspect ratio with narrow size distributions within the limit of that possessed by starting NRs can be produced by this mild oxidation approach.

Abstract:Particle size and size distribution are two of the most vital parameters of nanomaterials since their physical properties as well as applications are highly dependent on these key factors. The objective of this work is to study the particle size and size distribution of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which were synthesized by a simple green synthesis in HAuCl4 and water-soluble chitosan solution (WSCS). Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques were carried out to determine the particle size, size distribution and polydispersity of AuNPs. The evidences from TEM and SAXS indicated that AuNPs can be formed in spherical shape with the size in the range of 10–30 nm. From TEM, the particle sizes of the AuNPs prepared in WSC, S at the concentration of 0.02 and 0.05 mg/mL containing 0.1 mM HAuCl4 were 20.5 ± 2.1 and 21.2 ± 1.8 nm, respectively. By increasing the concentration of HAuCl4 precursor up to 0.5 mM, AuNPs exhibited a slightly larger particle size (24.4 ± 2.2 nm). The particle size, size distribution and polydispersity of AuNPs observed by TEM and SAXS were in agreement. However, AuNPs sizes from SAXS were smaller than those from TEM because only the Au core of the AuNPs was detected by X-ray scattering. In addition, the chemical structure and specific surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption of AuNPs were well characterized by FTIR and UV-vis spectrophotometer. The FTIR results of AuNPs implied that the stabilization of AuNPs in the WSCS was due to electrostatic interaction and steric hindrance of C=O, C–O–C, –OH, –NH2 groups. By using WSCS at concentration 0.02 and 0.05 mg/mL, the SPR absorption bands were observed at 545 and 535 nm, respectively. The TEM and SAXS results of AuNPs in this study will provide an essential basis for synthesis of metallic nanoparticles for various applications in the future.

Luminescent Gold Nanoparticles With Size-Independent Emission

Abstract:Size-independent emission has been widely observed for ultrasmall thiolated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) but our understanding of the photoluminescence mechanisms of noble metals on the nanoscale has remained limited. Herein, we report how the emission wavelength of a AuNP and the local binding geometry of a thiolate ligand (glutathione) on the AuNP are correlated, as these AuNPs emit at different wavelengths in spite of their identical size (ca. 2.5 nm). By using circular dichroism, X-ray absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopy, we found that a high Au-S coordination number (CN) and a high surface coverage resulted in strong AuI-ligand charge transfer, a chiral conformation, and 600 nm emission, whereas a low Au-S CN and a low surface coverage led to weak charge transfer, an achiral conformation, and 810 nm emission. These two size-independent emissions can be integrated into one single 2.5 nm AuNP by fine-tuning of the surface coverage; a ratiometric pH response was then observed owing to strong energy transfer between two emission centers, opening up new possibilities for the design of ultrasmall ratiometric pH nanoindicators.
Unraveling a Generic Growth Pattern in Structure Evolution of Thiolate-Protected Gold Nanoclusters.

Abstract:Precise control of the growth of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters is a prerequisite for their applications in catalysis and bioengineering. Here, we bring to bear a new series of thiolate-protected nanoclusters with a unique growth pattern, i.e., Au20(SR)16, Au28(SR)20, Au36(SR)24, Au44(SR)28, and Au52(SR)32. These nanoclusters can be viewed as resulting from the stepwise addition of a common structural motif [Au8(SR)4]. The highly negative values of the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) in the center of the tetrahedral Au4 units suggest that the overall stabilities of these clusters stem from the local stability of each tetrahedral Au4 unit. Generalization of this growth-pattern rule to large-sized nanoclusters allows us to identify the structures of three new thiolate-protected nanoclusters, namely, Au60(SR)36, Au68(SR)40, and Au76(SR)44. Remarkably, all three large-sized nanoclusters possess relatively large HOMO-LUMO gaps and negative NICS values, suggesting their high chemical stability. Further extension of the growth-pattern rule to the infinitely long nanowire limit results in a one-dimensional (1D) thiolate-protected gold nanowire (RS-AuNW) with a band gap of 0.78 eV. Such a unique growth-pattern rule offers a guide for precise synthesis of a new class of large-sized thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters or even RS-AuNW which, to our knowledge, has not been reported in the literature.
Unravelling the Structure of a Medium‐Sized Metalloid Gold Nanocluster and Its Filming Property

Abstract:Unravelling the structure of thiolated metalloid gold nanoclusters in the medium-sized range by single crystal X-ray crystallography (SCXC) is challenging. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel Au-67(SR)(35) nanocluster, and unravelled its single crystal structure by SCXC, which features a mix-structured Au-48 kernel protected by one Au-4(SR)(5) staple and fifteen Au(SR)(2) staples. Unprecedentedly, this structure can be thermally induced to aggregate into larger nanoparticles and self-deposit to form a gold nanoparticles film onto the walls of a vial or other substrates such as quartz, mica or ceramic, which can be developed into a facile, substrate-universal and scalable filming method. The film exhibits high sensitivity, uniformity and recyclability as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate and can be applied for detecting multiple organic pollutants.

Abstract:Reaction pathways for the formation of thiolate-gold nanoparticles are investigated by density functional theory（DFT） and a new mechanism upon solvent polarity and tetraalkylammonium is obtained. In solvents with high polarities, [Au（I）SR]n polymers can be formed as the precursor of metal ions prior to the addition of a reducing agent; while a product of [Cl···AuCl（HSR）] is identified as the precursor in solvents with low polarities, such as toluene and chloroform.In addition, tetraalkylammonium also has an obvious effect on the reactions when it is used as a phase transfer agent in the two-phase synthesis. These findings offer a systematic analysis on the pathways to thiolate-stabilized nanoparticles and give a favorable explanation by comparison with those in an experimental system.

Abstract:In this article, we characterized the polymeric gold(I) thiolates that precipitated from the intermediate solutions during the synthesis process of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) by the Brust-Schiffrin two-phase method and investigated the formation mechanism of the polymeric gold(I) thiolates. The solution H-1 NMR confirmed the complete reduction from Au(III) to Au(I) with the addition of the first two equivalents of thiols, while only the third and fourth equivalents of thiols were found to participate in forming gold(I) thiolates. Gold(I) thiolates, [Au(I)SR](n), precipitated from these solutions were further characterized by H-1 solid-state NMR spectroscopy under fast magic angle spinning (MAS), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Further quantitative studies revealed that the composition of [Au(I)SR](n) could be controlled by changing the order of addition of the third and fourth equivalents of thiols. This work has great significance to better understand the mechanism of gold nanoparticle formation and thus to tailor the properties of the final products.
Effect of the size of nanoparticles on their dissolution within metal-glass nanocomposites under sustained irradiation

Abstract:We investigate the dissolution law of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) under sustained irradiation. The system is composed of isolated spherical gold NPs (4–100 nm) embedded in an amorphous silica host matrix. Samples are irradiated at room temperature in the nuclear stopping power regime with 4 MeV Au ions for fluences up to 8 × 1016 cm−2. Experimentally, the dependence of the dissolution kinetics on the irradiation fluence is linear for large NPs (45–100 nm) and exponential for small NPs (4–25 nm). A lattice-based kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) code, which includes atomic diffusion and ballistic displacement events, is used to simulate the dynamical competition between irradiation effects and thermal healing. The KMC simulations allow for a qualitative description of the NP dissolution in two main stages, in good agreement with the experiment. Moreover, the perfect correlation obtained between the evolution of the simulated flux of ejected atoms and the dissolution rate in two stages implies that there exists an effect of the size of NPs on their dissolution and a critical size for the transition between the two stages. The Frost-Russell model providing an analytical solution for the dissolution rate, accounts well for the first dissolution stage but fails in reproducing the data for the second stage. An improved model obtained by including a size-dependent recoil generation rate permits fully describing the dissolution for any NP size. This proves, in particular, that the size effect on the generation rate is the principal reason for the existence of two regimes. Finally, our results also demonstrate that it is justified to use a unidirectional approximation to describe the dissolution of the NP under irradiation, because the solute concentration is particularly low in metal-glass nanocomposites.

Abstract:Significance Here, by real-time monitoring with single-molecule fluorescence microscopy the size-dependent catalytic process of individual Au clusters at single-turnover resolution, we study the size-dependent catalytic behaviors of gold (Au) clusters at the single-cluster level, and then observe the strong unique size effect on the catalytic properties of individual Au clusters, in both catalytic product formation and dissociation processes. Such a unique size effect on the nanocatalysis could be attributed intrinsically to the size-dependent electronic structure of Au clusters, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of the catalytic mechanism of Au particles.

Abstract:This Concept article provides an elementary discussion of a special class of large-sized gold compounds, so-called Au nanoclusters, which lies in between traditional organogold compounds (e.g., few-atom complexes, <1 nm) and face-centered cubic (fcc) crystalline Au nanoparticles (typically >2 nm). The discussion is focused on the relationship between them, including the evolution from the Au⋅⋅⋅Au aurophilic interaction in Au(I) complexes to the direct Au-Au bond in clusters, and the structural transformation from the fcc structure in nanocrystals to non-fcc structures in nanoclusters. Thiolate-protected Au(n)(SR)(m) nanoclusters are used as a paradigm system. Research on such nanoclusters has achieved considerable advances in recent years and is expected to flourish in the near future, which will bring about exciting progress in both fundamental scientific research and technological applications of nanoclusters of gold and other metals.

Abstract:Abstract Gold-gold sulfide nanoparticles are of interest for drug delivery, biomedical imaging, and photothermal therapy applications due to a facile synthesis method resulting in small particles with high near-infrared (NIR) absorption efficiency. Previous studies suggest that the NIR sensitivity of these nanoparticles was due to hexagonally shaped metal-coated dielectric nanoparticles that consist of a gold sulfide core and gold shell. Here, we illustrate that the conventional synthesis procedure results in the formation of polydisperse samples of icosahedral gold particles, gold nanoplates, and small gold spheres. Importantly, through compositional analysis, via UV/vis absorption spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), we show that all of the nanoparticles exhibit identical face center cubic (FCC) gold crystalline structures, thus suggesting that sulfide is not present in the final fabricated nanoparticles. We show that icosahedrally shaped nanoparticles result in a blue-shifted absorbance, with a peak in the visible range. Alternatively, the nanoplate nanoparticles result in the characteristic NIR absorbance peak. Thus, we report that the NIR-contributing species in conventional gold-gold sulfide formulations are nanoplates that are comprised entirely of gold. Furthermore, polydisperse gold nanoparticle samples produced by the traditional one-step reduction of HAuCl4 by sodium thiosulfate show increased in vitro toxicity, compared to isolated and more homogeneous constituent samples. This result exemplifies the importance of developing monodisperse nanoparticle formulations that are well characterized in order to expedite the development of clinically beneficial nanomaterials.

Abstract:Highly monodisperse, biocompatible and functionalizable sub-10-nm citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been synthesized following a kinetically controlled seeded-growth strategy. The use of traces of tannic acid together with an excess of sodium citrate during nucleation is fundamental in the formation of a high number (7 × 1013 NPs/mL) of small ∼3.5 nm Au seeds with a very narrow distribution. A homogeneous nanometric growth of these seeds is then achieved by adjusting the reaction parameters: pH, temperature, sodium citrate concentration and gold precursor to seed ratio. We use this method to produce Au NPs with a precise control over their sizes between 3.5 and 10 nm and a versatile surface chemistry allowing studying the size-dependent optical properties in this transition size regime lying between clusters and nanoparticles. Interestingly, an inflection point is observed for Au NPs smaller than 8 nm in which the sensitivity of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak position as a function of NPs size and surface modifications dramatically increase. These studies are relevant in the design of the final selectivity, activity and compatibility of Au NPs, especially in those (bio)applications where size is a critical parameter (e.g., biodistribution, multiplex labeling, and protein interaction).

Abstract:Quantum-sized, thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (NCs) with atomic precision have attracted substantial research attention over the past decades due to their interesting optical, electronic properties and unusually high catalytic activities. However, despite the remarkable success has been made in the synthesis and characterization of gold nanoclusters, most synthetic approaches suffer from the production of a mixture of different cluster sizes and often a quite low yield of specific sized clusters. Therefore, the products have to be separated on the basis of various complicated processes. The difficulty in isolating and purifying nanoclusters has become a major obstacle to the practical applications of metal nanocluster materials. On the other hand, intensive studies have shown that the optical, electronic, and catalytic properties of gold nanoclusters are strongly dependent on the core size, composition, and structure. Thus, it is highly desirable to develop facile protocols that permit the synthesis, isolation, purification, and characterization of monodispersed, atomically precise gold nanoclusters with control over size in order to fully understand their size-dependent properties. This chapter describes the recent progress in the synthesis, characterization, and study of monodispersed gold nanoclusters.

Sputter Deposition toward Short Cationic Thiolated Fluorescent Gold Nanoclusters: Investigation of Their Unique Structural and Photophysical Characteristics Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

Abstract:We herein present the preparation of short, bulky cationic thiolate (thiocholine)-protected fluorescent Au nanoclusters via sputter deposition over a liquid polymer matrix. The obtained Au nanoclusters showed near-infrared fluorescence and had an average core diameter of 1.7 ± 0.6 nm, which is too large compared to that of the reported fluorescent Au nanoclusters prepared via chemical means. We revealed the mechanism of formation of this unique material using single-particle electron microscopy, optical measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and high-performance liquid chromatography fractionations. The noncrystallized image was observed via single-particle high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy observations and compared with chemically synthesized crystalline Au nanoparticle with the same diameter, which demonstrated the unique structural characteristic speculated via XPS. The size fractionation and size-dependent fluorescence measurement, together with other observations, indicated that the nanoclusters most probably contained a mixture of very small fluorescent species in their aggregated form and were derived from the sputtering process itself and not from the interaction between thiol ligands.
