Abstract:We demonstrate third-harmonic generation (THG) with a tunable spectral range of more than 500 nm in a step-index tellurite fiber. Third-harmonic (TH) signals with a peak wavelength from 524 to 1043 nm are obtained in a 3 cm-long fiber when the fundamental wavelength shifts from 1560 to 3100 nm. To our knowledge, the tunable spectral range covering almost one octave is the widest tunable range of THG in fibers so far. The far-field patterns of the TH signals by 1560 nm to 2100 nm pumping are recorded by a charge coupled device camera, which are close to the fundamental mode profile. The THG in such a wide tunable range is attributable to the high nonlinearity of the tellurite fiber and the high pump peak power of the pump pulse.

Abstract:We designed and fabricated a tellurite (76.5TeO(2)-6Bi(2)O(3)-11.5Li(2)O-6ZnO, mol. %) microstructured optical fiber (TMOF) with four air holes for widely tunable third-harmonic generation (THG). The loss of the TMOF is ~0.2 dB/m at 1550 nm. Widely tunable THG from ~567 to 902 nm is obtained when the TMOF is pumped by an optical parametric oscillator with the pump wavelength changing from ~1700 to 2700 nm. The mechanism of THG in this work is further investigated through the third-harmonic signal pattern, which is due to the high nonlinearity of the TMOF and the high pump power, not from the phase-matching process between the fundamental mode and the high-order TH mode.

Abstract:We report multicolor upconversion emissions including the blue-violet, green, and red lights in a Tm3+/Er3+ codoped tellurite glass photonic microwire between two silica fiber tapers. A silica fiber is tapered until its evanescent field is exposed and then angled-cleaved at the tapered center to divide the tapered fibers into two parts. A tellurite glass is melted by a gas flame to cluster into a sphere at the tip of one tapered fiber. The other angled-cleaved tapered fiber is blended into the melted tellurite glass. When the tellurite glass is melted, the two silica fiber tapers are simultaneously moving outwards to draw the tellurite glass into a microwire in between. The advantage of angled-cleaving on fiber tapers is to avoid cavity resonances in high index photonic microwire. Thus, the broadband white light can be transmitted between silica fibers and a special optical property like high intensity upconversion emission can be achieved. A cw 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser light is launched into the Tm3+/Er3+ codoped tellurite microwire through a silica fiber taper to generate the multicolor upconversion emissions, including the blue-violet, green, and red lights, simultaneously. Simultaneous Generation of Ultrabroadband Noise-Like Pulses and Intracavity Third Harmonic at 2 Μm

Abstract:We demonstrated that ultrabroadband noise-like pulses (NLPs) spanning from below 1600 nm to beyond 2300 nm can be generated in Tm-doped fiber lasers enabled by an optical microfiber. Meanwhile, pronounced red light around 660 nm was also observed, which was attributed to the intracavity third harmonic generation (THG) of ultrashort pulses by harnessing the intermodal phase matching in the optical microfiber. As far as we know, it is the first time to simultaneously observe the ultrabroadband NLPs and the intracavity THG in ultrafast fiber lasers, and it is anticipated that these ultrabroadband NLPs can be adopted as a compact broadband source for optical spectroscopy around 2 µm and a wonderful potential seed for supercontinuum generation in the mid-infrared. Moreover, the THG of the intracavity high peak power NLPs in ultrafast fiber lasers provides a new kind of fiber-format visible light source.

Abstract:We demonstrate third-harmonic generation (THG) in an elliptical-core ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) fluoride fiber, for the first time to our best knowledge. Linearly polarized THG around 523 nm is obtained when pumped by a pulse laser at 1560 nm. The extinction ratios of average power and peak power are ~6.7 and ~6.8 dB, respectively, in a 10 m long fiber. The extinction ratios are improved to ~11.1 and ~12.6 dB, respectively, when the fiber length is cut to 35 cm. Tunable THG from 605 to 740 nm is observed when pumped by an optical parametric oscillator with the pump wavelength changed from 1800 to 2200 nm.

Abstract:We report generation of tunable vortex beams in the blue spectral range, with a 3.3 nm spectral tuning range, by frequency tripling of the near-infrared (IR) wave at around 1.34 um in a LiTaO3 optical superlattice. The nonlinear crystal used in this work has a chirped dual-periodical structure which can provide two expanded reciprocal vectors for tunable performance of the cascaded third harmonic generation (THG). The maximum THG efficiency reaches about 1.4%.

Abstract:Broadband tunable ultrafast lasers using mid-infrared (MIR) fibers operating at a 3-5 mu m atmospheric transmission window are attractive sources because of their numerous applications. Tellurite fibers possess the merits of large linear and nonlinear refractive indices, sufficient chemical stability, and wide transparency range up to similar to 5 mu m; also, they are highly suitable for high efficiency MIR ultrafast fiber laser sources based on soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS). We numerically simulate SSFS of MIR femtosecond pulses in step-index tellurite optical fibers. A femtosecond erbium-doped fluoride fiber laser at 3.5 mu m is employed as the pump source. Parameters including the peak power of the input pulse and nonlinear fiber length are optimized for high efficiency broadband tunable MIR ultrafast laser performance. Our results show that a high-efficiency 3.5-6 mu m wavelength-tunable femtosecond laser can be realized by employing SSFS in a 22-cm-long segment of tellurite step-index fiber pumped by femtosecond pulses with 10-300 kW peak powers at 3.5 mu m. Ultra-high energy ratios of the most redshifted solitons to the input pulses of > 50% are obtained across the 3.5-5 mu m tuning range. The presented numerical study provides valuable guidance for SSFS of MIR femtosecond pulses in step-index tellurite fibers and is valuable for future high efficiency wavelength-tunable MIR ultrafast fiber laser development. Abstract:We report a near two-octave spanning supercontinuum (SC) from 790 nm to 2900 nm in a nanostructured tellurite graded-index multimode fiber with a nanostructured core. We study the SC dynamics in different dispersion regimes and observe near-single mode spatial intensity distribution at high input energy values. Numerical simulations of the (3+1)D generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation are in good agreement with our experiments. Our results open a new avenue for the generation of high-power mid-infrared SC sources in soft glass fibers.

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultrabroadband supercontinuum (SC) generation with high coherence property in all-normal-dispersion (ANDi) Te-based chalcogenide tapered fiber. The fibers made of Ge20As20Se15Te45 core and Ge20As20Se20Te40 cladding glasses were fabricated via isolated stacked extrusion. The waist diameter and length can be accurately controlled by a homemade tapering platform. When the core diameter of the waist was ≤14 μm, the fiber showed an ANDi characteristic in the wavelength range of 1.7-14 μm. A coherent SC generation covered 1.7-12.7 μm was generated in a 7-cm-long tapered fiber, pumped at 5.5 μm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first SC experimental demonstration in Te-based step-index tapered fiber and the broadest SC generation in chalcogenide tapered fiber when pumped in the normal dispersion regime so far.

Abstract:We demonstrate the broadband cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) and supercontinuum (SC) generation in a tellurite MOF which is made from 76.5TeO(2)-6ZnO-11.5Li(2)O-6Bi(2)O(3) (TZLB, mol%) glass. By using a 2-mu m picosecond laser with the center wavelength of similar to 1958 nm as the pump source, the broadband FWM with the frequency separation of similar to 1.1 THz is obtained. The bandwidth of the frequency comb spans a range of similar to 630 nm from similar to 1620 to 2250 nm at the average pump power of similar to 125 mW. With the average pump power increasing to similar to 800 mW, the broadband mid-infrared SC generation with the spectrum from similar to 900 to 3900 nm is observed. Changing the pump source to a femtosecond laser (optical parametric oscillator, OPO) with the center wavelength of similar to 2000 nm, solitons and dispersive waves (DWs) are obtained. Abstract:Third-harmonic generation (THG) in silicon nitride waveguides is an ideal source of coherent visible light, suited for ultrafast pulse characterization, telecom signal monitoring and self-referenced comb generation due to its relatively large nonlinear susceptibility and CMOS compatibility. We demonstrate third-harmonic generation in silicon nitride waveguides where a fundamental transverse mode at 1,596 nm is phase-matched to a TM 02 mode at 532 nm, confirmed by the far-field image. We experimentally measure the waveguide width-dependent phase-matched wavelength with a peak-power-normalized conversion efficiency of 5.78 × 10 −7 %/W 2 over a 660-μm-long interaction length.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber Tm3+-doped silica fiber laser operating at a wide selectable wavelength range by using different fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) as wavelength selection elements. With a specifically designed high reflective (HR) FBG and the fiber end as an output coupler, the lasing in the range from 1975 nm to 2150 nm with slope efficiency of >30% can be achieved. By employing a low reflective (LR) FBG as the output coupler, the obtainable wavelengths were extended to the range between 1925 nm and 2200 nm which is the reported longest wavelength from the Tm3+-doped silica fiber lasers. Furthermore, by employing a FBG array in the laser cavity and inducing bend loss between adjacent FBGs in the array, six switchable lasing wavelengths were achieved. Abstract:We report broad bandwidth, mid-IR supercontinuum generation using a sub-cm (8 mm) length of highly nonlinear tellurite microstructured photonic crystal fiber (PCF). We pump the fiber at telecommunication wavelengths by using 1550 nm, 100 fs pulses of energy E=1.9 nJ. When coupled in the PCF, these pulses result in a supercontinuum (SC) bandwidth of 4080 nm extending from 789 to 4870 nm measured at 20 dBm below the peak spectral power. This bandwidth is comparable or in excess of previously reported spectra for other nonlinear glass fiber formulations despite the significantly shorter fiber length. In addition, besides offering a convenient pump wavelength, short fiber lengths enable smoother SC spectra, lower dispersion, and reduced material absorption at longer wavelengths making the use of this PCF particularly interesting.

Abstract:We have prepared a well-structured tellurium chalcogenide (ChG) fiber with a specialized double cladding structure by an improved extrusion method, and experimentally demonstrated an ultra-flat mid-infrared (MIR) supercontinuum (SC) generation in such a fiber. The step-index fiber had an optical loss of <1 dB/m in a range from 7.4 to 9.7 μm with a minimum loss of 0.69 dB/m at 7.87 μm. Simulation showed that an all-normal dispersion profile can be realized in this double cladding tellurium fiber. An ultra-flat MIR SC spectrum (~3.2-12.1μm at -10 dB, ~2-14 μm at -30 dB) was generated from a 22-cm long fiber pumped with a femtosecond laser at 5 μm (~150 fs, 1 kHz). Then the degree of coherence was calculated out based on a simulation, showing that a high coherent MIR SC (from 2.9 to 13.1 μm) can be generated in this double-cladding tellurium fiber.

Abstract:Continuous wave (CW) photomixing is a widely utilized method for terahertz (THz) radiation generation, with diverse applications in sensing, spectroscopy, and wireless communication. However, most existing systems are dependent on discrete, bulky components, highlighting the demand for integrated solutions that can enhance energy efficiency, flexibility, and stability. Here, we exploit the advantages of silicon photonics within the THz domain utilizing a hybrid-integrated dual III-V/Si3N4 narrow-linewidth laser module to generate widely tunable THz waves, whose frequency is determined by the frequency difference of the lasers. To enhance the frequency stability of the produced THz signal, we synchronize thermal noise by integrating two external laser cavities on the same chip. Further, synchronization of electrical noise is accomplished by electrically connecting the two gain sections in series using a low-noise current source. The external cavity lasers incorporating low-loss Si3N4 microring resonator (MRR) filters, deliver optical power up to 13 dBm, exhibit a broad wavelength tuning range of approximately 55 nm, and maintain a narrow optical intrinsic linewidth below 0.77 kHz. By adjusting the laser frequency interval in the heterodyne synthesis setup, we achieved CW THz generation over a wide tuning range from 95.2 GHz to 1.012 THz. The 3-dB THz electrical linewidth is estimated to be less than 31 kHz. As far as we know, this represents the narrowest linewidth for THz signals generated by heterodyne synthesis with free-running integrated sources over such a wide tuning range. The hybrid-integrated narrow-linewidth compact dual laser module possesses a long-term THz frequency drift of 65 MHz, measured for 10 hours. Our study therefore highlights the huge potential of silicon photonics technology in the THz domain.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate mid-infrared (MIR) super-continuum (SC) generation spanning similar to 2.0 to 15.1 mu m in a 3 cm-long chalcogenide step-index fiber. The pump source is generated by the difference frequency generation with a pulse width of similar to 170 fs, a repetition rate of similar to 1000 Hz, and a wavelength range tunable from 2.4 to 11 mu m. To the best of our knowledge, this is the broadest MIR SC generation observed so far in optical fibers. It facilitates fiber-based applications in sensing, medical, and biological imaging areas. Abstract:We have demonstrated broad supercontinuum (SC) generation by using a highly nonlinear tapered tellurite microstructured fiber pumped by a 15-ps-pulsed laser with the peak power of 375 W. The fiber is characterized with a short section with a large diameter followed by a long section with a small diameter. The SC was mainly generated in the last 30-cm-long section which had a core diameter of 0.9 mu m and a zero dispersion wavelength around the pump wavelength. Such a core size and a dispersion profile were chosen to ensure the SC was mainly broadened by phase matched four-wave mixing. The SC spans from UV to mid IR. The 10 dB spectrum is from 780 to 1890 nm. The input peak power is much lower than conventionally adopted in the picosecond regime. The constructed SC light source is cost-effective, since neither femtosecond pulsed laser nor high power picosecond pulsed laser is adopted. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America
