Abstract:The validity of J. L. Holland's vocational personality types and their relationship to value dimensions were examined in light of Holland's theory of vocational choice. Male seniors (N = 316) completing their college program of study and representing the six personality types (realistic, investigative, social, enterprising, conventional, and artistic) were administered the Vocational Preference Inventory (identification of personality type) and the Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values (identification of value dimensions). The results generally supported Holland's postulated personality typologies and value dimensions. A few inconsistencies concerning engineering and education majors and implications concerning personality type profile are discussed.

Abstract:This research aims to determine the of personality type in career decision making of vocational high school students based on the theory John L Holland's theory. The results of this study indicate that Holland's theory gives attention to behavioral characteristics or personality types as a major causes in individual career choices and development. A person's personality according to Holland is the result of heredity and environmental influences. Holland's theory helps individuals to plan their career, and explains that the interaction of individuals with the environment can produce characteristics of job choices and adjustments to the work environment. Holland divides six types of personality that correlate with the type of work environment, namely realistic, intellectual, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional. Previous studies have shown that personality types and environmental characteristics can help students make career decisions

Abstract:A two-study design was used to examine the relationship between Holland's vocational interest types, personality characteristics, and abilities. Study 1 consisted of 139 individuals (48 men and 91 women) who participated in a vocational assessment exercise. They completed the Self-Directed Search, the revised NEO Personality Inventory, and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale—Revised. Study 2 consisted of 669 men and 206 women employed in the finance industry who completed the SDS, the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory, and a measure of general abilities, the PL-PQ. In both studies conceptually similar vocational interests and personality were found to be empirically related. A weak to moderate relationship was observed between general abilities and Investigative interests and between general abilities and the personality characteristics of Openness to Experience and Intuition. It was concluded that assessment of all three domains of interests, abilities, and personality has several advantages for assisting clients seeking vocational counselling.

Abstract:Because it focuses on the interactions between students and their environments, Holland’s theory of vocational choice provides a powerful framework for studying college experiences. The present study assessed the relative merits of psychological and sociological interpretations of Holland’s theory by examining the relationships among students’ expectations about college, their personality types, and their intended academic majors. Results indicated that both the psychological and sociological aspects of Holland’s theory aid in understanding students’ college expectations.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between personality, as measured by the five global factors of Cattell's 16PF, and occupational interests, as measured by Holland's Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI). Data were obtained from 122 undergraduate students studying various degree programs at a Melbourne university. Partial support was found for the hypothesis that vocational interests correlate with personality measures. The hypothesis that students completing different vocationally orientated degree programs would produce discrete personality profiles received limited support. Distinctly different RIASEC profiles, however, were evident across the four course groups. It was concluded that an understanding of both vocational interest and personality theory would enhance the services provided by career guidance professionals.

Gender Differences in Undergraduate Holland Personality Types: Vocational and Cocurricular Implications

Abstract:Patterns of interest among male and female undergraduate students were compared, using two instruments based on Holland's (1997) theory of occupational choice. One of these instruments assessed vocational interests while the other assessed cocurricular interests. Males were found to score higher than females on the realistic scale of the vocational instrument, while females were found to score higher than males on the social and enterprising scales of the same inventory. On the cocurricular inventory, males obtained higher realistic and investigative scores than did females, while females obtained higher artistic and social scores than did males. No significant differences were found on the remaining scales of either instrument. In this article, the authors discuss the practical implications of the findings, with reference to career services and campus activities, and offer recommendations for further research.

Abstract:It is 40 years since Holland first proposed his theory of vocational choice. In that period it is probably true to say that it has attracted more research than any other vocational guidance measure. This paper looks at the central concept in his theory (congruence) and other areas of vocational guidance, namely “fit”. It also looks at current research issues relating to Holland’s theory. Particular attention is paid to the research papers that examine the overlap between the six (RAISEC) personality types of Holland and the consensually accepted “Big Five” factor view of personality theorists. Finally a summary of the major theoretical, empirical, and methodological problems in the area is discussed. Cela fait maintenant quarante ans que Holland a pre´sente´ pour la premie`re fois sa the´orie du choix professionnel. On peut affirmer sans grand risque de se tromper qu’elle a suscite´ davantage de recherches que n’importe quelle autre approche de l’orientation professionnelle. On aborde dans cet article le concept central de sa the´orie (congruence), ainsi que d’autres aspects de l’orientation professionnelle, en particulier l’“ade´quation” (“fit”). Examining the Application of Holland's Theory to Vocational Interests and Choices of Chinese College Students

Abstract:This study investigates the applicability of Holland's career development theory in cross-cultural settings by examining vocational interests of Chinese college students and the relationship between those interests and their career choices. One hundred sixty five Chinese college students complete a Chinese version of the Self-Directed Search and a questionnaire requesting their demographic information, career choices, reasons for making a particular choice, and suggested areas needed for vocational guidance. The Multidimensional Scaling results supported the RIASEC order of Holland's typology for male students and equivalent distance among six types for female students. The majority of participants had a medium level of congruence between interests and choices as measured by the C-Index. Personal interests, social needs, and job market are identified as the top reasons for making a career choice. Practical outcome-oriented career implementation skills are more desired than self-exploration for vocational guidance.

Abstract:John Holland’s theory of career orientations advises people to select careers that are congruent with their personalities. Similarly, self-concordance theory, based in self-determination theory, advises people to select personal goals that match their autonomous interests and identifications. We compared the predictive efficacy of the two theories in two studies of undergraduates, using the six career areas of Holland theory (RIASEC: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional) as a common base. Multilevel logit modeling in Study 1 showed that both the Holland score and an aggregate self-concordance score predicted independent variance in the outcome variable, current career choices. These effects were replicated in Study 2. Supplementary analyses showed that the identified motivation subscale was the primary source of these effects. Thus, career counselors may want to consider assessing students’ self-concordance for the six RIASEC domains, in particular their levels of identified motivation for those domains, in addition to assessing their Holland codes.

Abstract:We investigated (a) the fit and structural equivalence of Holland's model of six vocational personality types in a sample of South African men (n = 139) and women (n = 268) using the South African Career Interest Inventory, and (b) mean score differences for men and women on these types. The results supported the fit and structural similarity of Holland's model of vocational personality types for men and women but showed that the model fit the data better for women. The largest differences in the mean scores occurred on the Realistic scale. Implications of the results are presented.
Exploring paramedicine student preferences using Holland's vocational theory: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Holland's RIASEC typology is a classification of vocational personality types and work environments. Having a predisposition for their vocation, in terms of a personality that is congruent to their work environment, may be protective for paramedics with regards to both their mental and physical health. The purpose of this study was to identify paramedicine students' vocational preference according to Holland's RIASEC model. Bachelor of Paramedicine degree students in the three different year levels completed the 48-item Brief RIASEC Marker Scales to determine their order of the six RIASEC personality types. In this study, the paramedicine students' three most dominant personality types were Social-Investigative-Artistic, differing from the defined Holland Occupational Code for paramedics of Realistic-Social-Investigative. Male students scored significantly higher on the Reality personality type, whereas female students scored significantly higher on the Social personality type. Overall, this study found many students to possess two of the three dominant personality traits that form the desired Holland code for paramedics. This suggests that many students may be better able to cope with the demands of the paramedicine profession upon employment.
Holland’s constructs in relation to career persistence and career change: A study of Australian managerial and professional workers

Abstract:This study tested Holland’s propositions that career persisters are more congruent, have greater vocational identity, and more differentiated and consistent personalities than career changers. His proposition that people who change career move to more congruent occupations was also tested. The study examined if vocational identity, differentiation, consistency, age or gender moderate the congruence–career persistence/change relation. The sample comprised 285 managers/professionals (241 persisters; 44 changers) first assessed in groups over 5 years and followed up after 18 months to gauge their career persistence/change status. Results showed persisters were more congruent and had stronger vocational identity than changers, but their personalities were not more differentiated or consistent. Changers were found to move to careers more congruent than their previous careers. There was no evidence the proposed moderators interacted with congruence in predicting career persistence/change.

Abstract:Interests are often used in career counselling and Holland’s model of vocational personality types is often implicitly or explicitly the vehicle used to explain interest scores. In this chapter we set out to investigate interests and the applicability of Holland’s model of vocational personality types in career counselling. We start with a definition of interests and then present some thoughts on the measurement of interests. This includes a discussion of the spherical structure of interests and the general interest factor. We then present some findings on the propositions made in Holland’s model of vocational personality types and show that these propositions continue to be relevant in career counselling. In the last section of this chapter, we briefly discuss the three waves in career counselling and then provide some thoughts on using interests and Holland’s model of vocational personality types in career counselling.
Predicting adult occupational environments from gender and childhood personality traits.

Abstract:To test aspects of a theory of the role of personality and gender on the development of vocational interests and their subsequent effects on adult occupational choices, the authors of this study examined associations among childhood personality traits, gender, and occupational environments more than 40 years later. Participants (N = 587) were assessed on the Big Five by their teachers when the participants were between 6 and 12 years old. In middle-age (late 40s), the participants reported their occupation. Holland's (1997) RIASEC vocational types (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, Conventional) were used to characterize the job environments of reported occupations. Childhood Openness/Intellect and Conscientiousness, but no other Big Five traits, were associated with occupational environments. For the most strongly sex-typed work environments, associations with Openness/Intellect were moderated by gender. These findings suggest that the roots of the strongest gender-stereotyping effects in occupations may be found not only in the social factors associated with gender but also in the individual differences of children related to Openness/Intellect.

Abstract:Holland’s RIASEC (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional) career theory is generally recognized as one of the most important and influential in the field of career development and vocational psychology. We examined data that might verify such an observation, and we used bibliographic research tools to identify all of the publications from 1953 to 2011 on this theory. We categorized the number of citations into five areas: (a) application of the theory in practice, (b) research and practice directed to specific populations (e.g., K–12, age, occupation), (c) tools or instruments operationalizing the theory, (d) validity and efficacy of RIASEC theory, and (e) diverse populations studied in terms of ethnicity, disability, and status. We located a total of 1,970 reference citations to Holland’s theory and applications during the 58-year period, and this article describes the methods, findings, and implications of this research.

Abstract:The problem of this research is based on the large number of students entering high school on the wishes of parents, students feel wrongly entering the department because it is not in accordance with their talents, interests and potential. Furthermore, efforts have been made by the teacher for guidance and counseling in providing Holland theory career guidance services. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The informants in this study were counseling teachers and students. Data analysis in this research uses steps of data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of Holland's theory career guidance services has been going well. From the results of interviews, observations and documentation to research informants regarding the implementation of Holland theory career guidance services, it can be understood that at the planning, implementation, evaluation and follow-up stages have been going well as they should, this is evident in the existence of service program plans, materials and instruments Holland, as well as the results of the Holland instrument analysis of students who already know the personality type and direction of their career choices.
Structural Validity of Holland’s Circumplex Model of Vocational Personality Types in Africa

Abstract:This study investigated the construct (structural) validity of Holland’s circumplex model of vocational personality types in Africa. Data were obtained on the general occupational themes of the Strong Interest Inventory for 28 countries. These countries were classified into three different geographic regions (Eastern Africa, Southern Africa, and Western Africa). The randomization test and circumplex covariance structure modeling were used to investigate the fit of Holland’s circumplex model across these regions. Results provide preliminary evidence for the generalizability of Holland’s model in the African context. Inspection of the angular locations of the six vocational personality types in two-dimensional space indicated slight disordering of the types in the Eastern Africa region and the correct ordering of the types in the Southern and Western African regions. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:Purpose- The aim of this study is to examine the effects of Holland type personality traits on organizational citizenship behavior and organizational commitment of employees working in the provincial organization of an institution affiliated to the Ministry of Interior in İzmir. Methodology- The study proceeded in a quantitative research design. First of all, a questionnaire consisting of four parts was applied to the participant group. In the first part of the questionnaire, demographic information of the participants, in the second part, the Holland Professional Personality Inventory, in the third part, the organizational commitment scale, and in the fourth part, the organizational citizenship behavior scale. The data obtained from the participants were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and regression analysis, and the findings for the research questions were measured. Findings- According to the analysis findings of the data obtained, it was determined that the personality types of the participant group were generally in harmony with the personality codes determined before the research according to the Holland Typology Theory, and the organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behavior levels of the group were high. Conclusion- According to the survey results obtained within the scope of the study, it was revealed that the participants had a person-job fit, and as a result of this fit, the emotional dimension of the organizational commitment dimensions had the highest average and the continuance commitment dimension had a low average. Again, it was seen that personality types have a significant effect on organizational citizenship behavior.

Abstract:Holland's theory of vocational choice is a powerful framework for studying academic environments and student development in college. This study tests Holland's third proposition that students flourish in academic environments (i.e., majors) that are congruent with their personality types. In addition, we examine the extent to which student characteristics influence person-environment fit. Findings indicated that student characteristics and personality type were significantly related to person-environment fit. Moreover, person-environment fit is positively related to self-reported grades. However, person-environment was not significantly related to either perceived learning gains or satisfaction with college.
