Abstract:Ordered nonstoichiometric Cu1.94S nano superstructure are constructed and provide notably improved catalytic H2 evolution reaction performance at 2482.00 µmol g‒1 h‒1. Careful selection of metal organic framework precursors with long range metal ion alignments impact performance, as well-ordered superstructures give rise to uniform electromagnetic fields and organized interparticle interactions that facilitate charge carrier transport. These close packed nanoparticles with negatively charged carboxylate surfaces inhibit large [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 and triethanolamine transport outwards, but allow smaller H2O particles to enter superstructure interiors. In this case, separation happens not only between electrons and holes but also between reduction and oxidation zones. Abundant dangling bonds also form from the complex nonstoichiometric Cu1.94S structure and bulk aggregation of close packed Cu1.94S, up to hundreds of nanometers, provides abundant catalytic active sites.

Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.

Abstract:A time- and energy-saving solution-based chemical precipitation method was developed to synthesize leaf-like CuO nanostructures. The morphology and size of the leaf-like CuO nanostructures could be simply manipulated by controlling the type and concentration of precursors, and the oriented attachment mechanism is responsible for the formation of leaf-like shape. With the concurrent reduction reaction and at appropriate concentration, CuO/Ag microspheres could be prepared and the growth mechanism is proposed. These two structures could serve as effective photocatalyst for the degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, compared to pure CuO nanostructures, the photodecomposition activity of CuO/Ag microspheres increases by 42.9% due to plasmon- enhanced light absorption.

Abstract:Cu2O nanocubes decorated with Ag nanoparticles were synthesized based on a one-step wet chemistry approach. The content of Ag nanoparticles was adjustable by tuning the AgNO3 concentration. The photocatalytic performances of the Ag/Cu2O nanocubes were systematically evaluated, and the influences of the Ag nanoparticles were analyzed. The introduction of Ag nanoparticles reduced the band gap, increased the photocurrent and most importantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity towards organic pollution degradations under visible light illumination. There is an optimum content of Ag nanoparticles for the Ag/Cu2O nanocubes to achieve the best performances. A model based on the band structure theory is proposed to explain the excellent performance of the Ag/Cu2O nanocubes.

Abstract:Cu2O flower/grass-like nanoarchitectures (FGLNAs) were fabricated on a thin film of copper electrodeposited onto copper foils using a thermal oxidation method with a nickel catalyst at an elevated temperature under a moderately humid atmosphere. The morphology of the Cu2O FGLNAs can be controlled by the heating temperature, and the FLGNAs growth mechanism is discussed in detail. Abstract:We report a plasmon-assisted growth of metal and semiconductor onto the tips of Ag nanotriangles (AgNTs) under light irradiation. The site-selective growth of Ag onto AgNTs are firstly demonstrated on the copper grids and amine-coated glass slides. As the irradiation time increases, microscopic images indicate that AgNTs gradually touch with each other and finally “weld” tip-to-tip together into the branched chains. Meanwhile, the redshift of plasmon band is observed in the extinction spectra, which agrees well the growth at the tips of AgNTs and the decrease of the gaps between the adjacent nanotriangles. We also synthesize AgNT-Cu2O nanocomposites by using a photochemical method and find that the Cu2O nanoparticles preferably grow on the tips of AgNTs. The site-selective growth of Ag and Cu2O is interpreted by the local field concentration at the tips of AgNTs induced by surface plasmon resonance under light excitation.

Abstract:We report a catalyst-free growth of Cu nanocrystals on ionic liquid surfaces by thermal evaporation method at room temperature. After deposition of Cu on ionic liquid surfaces, ramified Cu aggregates form. It is found that the aggregates are composed of both granules and nanocrystals with triangular or hexagonal appearances. The sizes of the nanocrystals are in the range of tens to hundreds of nanometers and increase with the nominal deposition thickness. The growth mechanism of the Cu aggregates and nanocrystals is presented.

Abstract:The conventional understanding of facet effects on photocatalysts is that semiconductor micro/nanocrystals exposed with high-reactivity facets usually exhibit excellent photocatalytic activities. However, this point of view is being challenged in some circumstances. Herein, two types of facet-defined AgCl nanocrystals, AgCl nanocubes exposed with six {100} facets and AgCl octahedrons enclosed by eight {111} facets have been successfully prepared. The comparative studies of their photocatalytic properties reveal an unusual higher photoreactivity of AgCl nanocubes than that of AgCl octahedrons, although AgCl {100} facets have lower theoretical surface energy than the AgCl {111} facets. The further mechanism investigation suggests that the much decreased reduction potential of {111} facet would result in insufficient consumption of photo-excited electrons and hence depress the involvement of holes in photooxidation reactions. Consequently, the surface electronic structures dominate the photoreactivities of AgCl {111} and {100} facets. Our work reveals the true photoreactivities of AgCl {111} and (100) facets by direct experimental evidence, and the proposed mechanism will facilitate further development of highly efficient AgCl photocatalysts. Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Facile hydrothermal synthesis of plasmonic photocatalyst Ag@AgCl and degradative photocatalysis under visible light irradiation

Abstract:We put forward a new approach for the synthesis of Ag@AgCl plasmonic photocatalyst via a hydrothermal-deposition-photoreduction method. The cetylmethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was used alone as both a source of reactants and surfactant. The structure of the prepared photocatalyst was determined by XRD, SEM, EDX and UV-Vis spectroscoscopy. The photocatalytic properties were investigated by degradation of an organic pollutant, Rhodamine B, under visible light irradiation. The results reveal that the experimental conditions have a great effect on the morphology of Ag@AgCl crystals. Ag@AgCl crystal is cubic and the Ag@AgCl sample which is photoreduced for 40 min exhibits the highest photoactivity, and 80.6 % RhB is degraded after irradiation for 2 hours using this catalyst. The high photocatalytic activity observed is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanoparticles.

Abstract:TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs) were hydrothermally grown on transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates, and were converted into nanotubes (NTAs) by hydrothermally in situ etching. Ag nanoparticles (NPLs) were sensitized on the NRAs and NTAs by a simple photodeposition approach (products were denoted as Ag-TiO2 NRAs and NTAs). The Ag-TiO2 NTAs samples possessed a large specific surface area (116 m(2) g(-1)) with Ag NPLs homogeneously dispersed among the TiO2 NTAs. The Ag-TiO2 NTAs exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities (98.8%) in degradation of methyl orange (MO) compared to Ag-TiO2 NRAs (92.6%), TiO2 NTAs (86.2%), and NRAs (81.7%). The enhanced photocatalytic activities can be attributed to the large specific surface area of TiO2 NTAs and strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag NPLs. In addition, Ag-TiO2 NTAs showed easy recovery feature in the recovery process and high durability in the recycling test, which was expected to be an efficient and practical photocatalyst used for waste water treatment. Abstract:A new composite photocatalyst Ag@AgBr/Cu2O was prepared by loading Ag@AgBr on (1 1 1) facts of octahedral Cu2O substrate via a facile precipitation in situ photoreduction method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis), nitrogen sorption and the photoelectrochemical measurements. The results show that Ag@AgBr nanoparticles are well-dispersed on Cu2O nanoparticles with narrow size distributions and controllable sizes from 10 to 30 nm. TEM results of the as-synthesized Ag@AgBr/Cu2O nanocomposite revealed that Ag@AgBr nanoparticles were attached to the surface of octahedral Cu2O. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) was carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of Ag@AgBr/Cu2O under visible-light irradiation. The Ag@AgBr/Cu2O composite showed stronger visible light absorption capacity and higher photocatalytic activity than pure Cu2O. The Ag@AgBr (15 wt.%)/Cu2O sample presented the best photocatalytic activity, degrading 93.28% MB after irradiation for 90 min, due to their high surface area (18.499 m2 g−1), the Crystal effect of Cu2O and surface plasmon resonance of Ag NPs. Meanwhile, phenol was degraded to further prove the degradation ability of Ag@AgBr/Cu2O. In addition, the quenching effect was examined in the photocatalytic reaction process of MB. Active h+, Br0 and the resulting O2− played the major roles for the dye degradation, while OH was verified to be insignificant. Based on the experimental results, a photocatalytic mechanism for organics degradation over Ag@AgBr/Cu2O photocatalysts was proposed. The electronic interactions were systematically studied and confirmed by the photoelectrochemical measurements.
Agbr Nanocrystals From Plates To Cubes And Their Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:AgBr nanocrystals, evolving from plates through truncated cubes and finally to regular cubes, corresponding to a progressive shrinkage of exposed {111} facets and enlargement of exposed {100} facets, were successfully prepared by facile ion-exchange reactions under the synergistic effects of polyvinylpyrrolidone and NH3 H2O. An investigation of the growth mechanism revealed that polyvinylpyrrolidone can selectively adsorb on the {111} facets of AgBr nanocrystals, whereas NH3H2O not only forms a [Ag(NH3)2]+ complex that slows the rates of ion-exchange reactions, but may also prefer to adsorb on {100} facets. Studies of their photocatalytic properties showed that the as-prepared AgBr nanocrystals exhibited facet-dependent photocatalytic properties. The {111}-dominated AgBr nanoplates exhibited the highest photocatalytic activities, and the photodegradation rate of methyl orange dyes over them was 3times faster than over AgBr nanocubes that expose {100} facets. Surface atomic models and DFT calculations indicate that the {111} facets have more dangling bonds and a higher surface energy than the {100} facets, which substantiate the facet-dependent photocatalytic properties. Therefore, our work not only provides a novel method to prepare regular AgBr nanocrystals, but also demonstrates that the shape and exposed facets have important influence on their photocatalytic activities.

Abstract:Fabrication of carbon films on semiconductor micro/nanocrystals improves their photocatalytic performance. However, the carbon coating can often lead to reduction in their activity because of the blocking of the reaction sites. Herein, we report the synthesis of folded-up thin carbon nanosheets on Cu2O cubes by surface etching, which increase the photocatalytic activity of Au/Cu2O 2 fold due to the enhancement in light absorption and charge separation.

Abstract:Hollow-structured polyhedral nanostructures of AgI nanoboxes and cube-tetrapod Ag/AgI cages have been fabricated through the controlled reaction of I- ions with nanocubes and cube-tetrapods of AgCl based on the principle of the Kirkendall effect. The Ag-0 nanodomains in the source nanoparticles of AgCl:Ag are preserved in the final hollow Ag/AgI cages during the chemical conversion of AgCl to AgI. The obtained hollow cube-tetrapod Ag/AgI nanostructures exhibited enhanced light absorption in the visible region and photocatalytic performance towards hydrogen evolution from water reduction and decomposition of organic pollutants, owing to the contribution of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of silver nanoparticles (nanodomains). The present versatile route can be generalized to the preparation of other inorganic functional materials with hollow interiors for different applications.
In Situ Growth Of G-C3n4 On Hexangular Flowerlike Fewo4 Microcrystals: Highly Efficient Catalyst And The Crucial Roles Of Fe3+/Fe2+ Couple In The Photoassisted Oxidation And Reduction Reactions

Abstract:Novel highly efficient heterostructured photocatalysts consisting of g-C3N4 nanosheets on hexangular flowerlike FeWO4 microcrystals were first fabricated via an in situ growth approach. The intimate g-C3N4 coating layers (ca. 50-130 nm) on the surface of FeWO4 microcrystals were observed through transmission electron microscopy. An all-side evaluation of its performance toward typical photoassisted oxidation and reduction reactions was carried out, which exhibited drastically improved performance for photocatalytic oxygen production and photo degradation, while obviously suppressed hydrogen evolution activity when compared with the bulk g-C3N4 (CNU). The optimal photocatalyst CNU-FW90 (90 mg of FeWO4 in 15 g of urea) displayed an oxygen evolution rate of 303 mu mol/(g h), about 2.4 and 3.8 times as much as that of CNU and FeWO4, respectively. Not only that, CNU-FW90 showed superior degradation activity with a reaction kinetics rate constant of 0.1192 min(-1), nearly 5-fold higher than that of the pure CNU. By correlating the performance with the band structures and surface valence states of g-C3N4@FeWO4 heterojunctions, a possible mechanism was proposed to uncover the differences between oxidation and reduction reactions in this system, which highlighted the crucial role of Fe3+/Fe2+ couple in tuning the performance of photocatalytic reactions. This work put forward a promising strategy to design highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts and shed light on the vital effect of surface valence state of Fe element in tuning the performance of Fe-related photocatalysts.

Abstract:Hierarchical superstructures of Ag nanoparticles with novel morphology resembling multiple growth hillocks were synthesized for the first time using photochemical method through the screw-dislocation-driven, nanoparticle-mediated crystal growth mechanism. The Ag nanoparticles were in situ synthesized from the photoreduction of Ag+ ions adsorbed on ZnO. The absence of organic capping agents in the synthesis protocol makes this photochemical approach suitable for preparing metal/semiconductor hybrid materials with clean metal/semiconductor interfaces that can find important applications in plasmon-assisted photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and plasmon-enhanced spectroscopies. Finally, we demonstrated that the photoluminescence properties of ZnO can be subtly modified by the photodeposited Ag nanostructures through synergistic mechanisms of surface plasmon-exciton resonant coupling and surface passivation.
