Abstract:Shnirelman has proved that the group of volume-preversing diffeomorphisms of the cube in R 3 has finite diameter and has announced the result that this is false for the square. Despite the fact that Shnirelman formulated his theorem only for the 3-dimensional cube, his proof can be modified for the case of the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of any compact simply-connected Riemannian manifold of dimension > 2. It turns out that the situation with the group of symplectic diffeomorphisms is completely different. We prove that the diameter of the symplectomorphism group of any compact exact symplectic manifold (necessarily with boundary) is infinite

We provide a complete answer when $G$ is cyclic, and a conjecture and some partial answers when $G$ is noncyclic.

Symplectic rational homology ball fillings of Seifert fibered spaces

Abstract:We characterize when some small Seifert fibered spaces can be the convex boundary of a symplectic rational homology ball and give strong restrictions for others to bound such manifolds. As part of this, we show that the only spherical $3$-manifolds that are the boundary of a symplectic rational homology ball are the lens spaces $L(p^2,pq-1)$ found by Lisca and give evidence for the Gompf conjecture that Brieskorn spheres do not bound Stein domains in C^2. We also find restrictions on Lagrangian disk fillings of some Legendrian knots in small Seifert fibered spaces.

Geometrical finiteness for automorphism groups via cone conjecture

Abstract:This paper aims to establish the geometrical finiteness for the natural isometric actions of (birational) automorphism groups on the hyperbolic spaces for K3 surfaces, Enriques surfaces, Coble surfaces, and irreducible symplectic varieties. As an application, it can be seen that such groups are non-positively curved: ${\rm CAT(0)}$ and relatively hyperbolic. In the case of K3 surfaces, we additionally provide a dynamical characterization of the relative hyperbolicity, and the first counterexample to Mukai's conjecture concerning the virtual cohomological dimension of automorphism groups.

Abstract:Motivated by Akbulut-Larson's construction of Brieskorn spheres bounding rational homology 4-balls, we explore plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles and use them to construct infinite families of rational homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls. Some of these rational homology 3-spheres are new examples of integer homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls, but do not bound integer homology 4-balls (i.e. nontrivial elements of <math>ker(ΘZ3→ΘQ3)</math>). In particular, we find infinite families of torus bundles over the circle that bound rational homology circles, provide a simple method for constructing more general plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles, and show that, for example, −1-surgery along any unknotting number one knot K with a positive crossing that can be switched to unknot K bounds a rational homology 4-ball.

Abstract:The rational homology balls $B_n$ appeared in Fintushel and Stern's rational blow-down construction [FS2]. Later, Symington [Sy1], defined this operation in the symplectic category. In [Kh2], the author defined the inverse procedure, the symplectic rational blow-up. In this paper, we study the obstructions to symplectically rationally blowing up a symplectic 4-manifold, i.e. the obstructions to symplectically embedding the rational homology balls $B_n$ into a symplectic 4-manifold. We prove a theorem and give additional examples which suggest that in order to symplectically embed the rational homology balls $B_n$, for high n, a symplectic 4-manifold must at least have a high enough $c_1^2$ as well.

Abstract:We prove that the monodromy diffeomorphism of a complex 2-dimensional isolated hypersurface singularity of weighted-homogeneous type has infinite order in the smooth mapping class group of the Milnor fiber, provided the singularity is not a rational double point. This is a consequence of our main result: the boundary Dehn twist diffeomorphism of an indefinite symplectic filling of the canonical contact structure on a negatively-oriented Seifert-fibered rational homology 3-sphere has infinite order in the smooth mapping class group. Our techniques make essential use of analogues of the contact invariant in the setting of $\mathbb{Z}/p$-equivariant Seiberg--Witten--Floer homology of 3-manifolds.

On coverings by Minkowski balls in the plane and a duality

Abstract:Lattice coverings in the real plane by Minkowski balls are studied. We exploit the duality of admissible lattices of Minkowski balls and inscribed convex symmetric hexagons of these balls. An explicit moduli space of the areas of these hexagons is constructed, giving the values of the determinants of corresponding covering lattices. Low and upper bounds for covering constants of Minkowski balls are given. The best known value of covering density of Minkowski ball is obtained. One conjecture and one problem are formulated.

Abstract:This paper classifies spherical objects in various geometric settings in dimensions two and three, including both minimal and partial crepant resolutions of Kleinian singularities, as well as arbitrary flopping 3-fold contractions with only Gorenstein terminal singularities. The main result is much more general: in each such setting, we prove that all objects in the associated null category with no negative Ext groups are the image, under the action of an appropriate braid or pure braid group, of some object in the heart of a bounded t-structure. The corollary is that all objects which admit no negative Exts, and for which the self-Hom space is one dimensional, are the images of the simples. A variation on this argument goes further, and classifies all bounded t-structures. There are multiple geometric, topological and algebraic consequences, primarily to autoequivalences and stability conditions. Our main new technique also extends into representation theory, and we establish that in the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra which is silting discrete, every object with no negative Ext groups lies in the heart of a bounded t-structure. As a consequence, every semibrick complex can be completed to a simple minded collection.

Sphere fibrations over highly connected manifolds

Abstract:We construct sphere fibrations over $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifolds such that the total space is a connected sum of sphere products. More precisely, for $n$ even, we construct fibrations $S^{n-1} \to \#^{k-1}(S^n \times S^{2n-1}) \to M_k$, where $M_k$ is a $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-dimensional Poincaré duality complex which satisfies $H_n(M_k)\cong \mathbb{Z}^k$, in a localized category of spaces. The construction of the fibration is proved for $k\geq 2$, where the prime $2$, and the primes which occur as torsion in $\pi_{2n-1}(S^n)$ are inverted. In specific cases, by either assuming $n$ is small, or assuming $k$ is large we can reduce the number of primes that need to be inverted. Integral results are obtained for $n=2$ or $4$, and if $k$ is bigger than the number of cyclic summands in the stable stem $\pi_{n-1}^s$, we obtain results after inverting $2$. Finally, we prove some applications for fibrations over $N\# M_k$, and for looped configuration spaces.

Abstract:In this note, we show that a complete n-dim Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature is of finite topological type provided that the diameter growth of M is of order $o(r^{((n-1)\alpha +1)/n})$ and the sectional curvature is no less than $-{\frac{c}{r^{2\alpha }}}$ (here, $0 \le \alpha \le 1$ and c is some positive constant) outside a geodesic ball large enough. Abstract:We study the geometry of compact geodesic spaces with trivial first Betti number admitting large finite groups of isometries. We show that if a finite group $G$ acts by isometries on a compact geodesic space $X$ whose first Betti number vanishes, then diam$(X) / $diam$(X / G ) \leq 4 \sqrt{ \vert G \vert }$. For a group $G$ and a finite symmetric generating set $S$, $P_k(\Gamma (G, S))$ denotes the 2-dimensional CW-complex whose 1-skeleton is the Cayley graph $\Gamma$ of $G$ with respect to $S$ and whose 2-cells are $m$-gons for $0 \leq m \leq k$, defined by the simple graph loops of length $m$ in $\Gamma$, up to cyclic permutations. Let $G$ be a finite abelian group with $\vert G \vert \geq 3$ and $S$ a symmetric set of generators for which $P_k(\Gamma (G,S))$ has trivial first Betti number. We show that the first nontrivial eigenvalue $-\lambda_1$ of the Laplacian on the Cayley graph satisfies $\lambda_1 \geq 2 - 2 \cos ( 2 \pi / k ) $. We also give an explicit upper bound on the diameter of the Cayley graph of $G$ with respect to $S$ of the form $O (k^2 \vert S \vert \log \vert G \vert )$. Related explicit bounds for the Cheeger constant and Kazhdan constant of the pair $(G,S)$ are also obtained.
