Abstract:Eu2+ doped aluminosilicate phosphors (Ca2AlMg0.5Si1.5O7:Eu2+ (CAMS:Eu2+)) for white near-UV w-LEDs have been synthesized by solid-state reaction at 1250°C. The phase and crystal structure of CAMS have been analyzed by using XRD. The material with a relatively low Eu2+ concentration displayed a peak in excitation spectrum at 372nm and a tunable emission spectrum. The colorimetric coordinate of sample with optimum Eu2+ concentration locates in green-yellow region with coordinate value of (0.2639, 0.6212). When the phosphor was pumped by UV light (λ≈372nm), we obtained bright green-yellow light, suggesting this material has a potential application as a NUV converting green-yellow phosphor for the NUV w-LEDs.
Spectral Properties of Alkaline Earth Composite Silicate Phosphors for White-LED

Abstract:Three series silicate phosphors(A:(SrBa)3SiO5∶0.024Ce3+,0.024Li+;B:Sr2.73M0.2SiO5∶0.07Eu2+(M= Ba,Mg,Ca);C:(SrBa)3SiO5∶xEu2+)were synthesized by solid reaction method.Their excitation and emission spectra were measured.There are two exitation peaks(351 nm and 418 nm,418 nm is stronger) for Ce3+ -activated(Series A) silicate phosphors.With increasing the content of Ba ion,their emission peaks change to longer wavelength.Consequently,we can change its color then at the end adjust the CIE chromaticity and color rendering index of white-LED.Eu2+ -activated(Series B and C) silicate phosphors have broad excitation bands from 350 nm to 450 nm.The emission peaks of Ce3+ -activated silicate phosphors are 540～555 nm and shorter than Eu2+ -activated silicate phosphors,while the emission peaks of Eu2+ -activated silicate phosphors are at 570～583 nm.For the series B(Sr2.73M0.2SiO5∶0.07Eu2+(M= Ba,Mg,Ca)),it's better when M=Ba.At the series C((SrBa)3SiO5∶xEu2+),their emission peaks and FWHM change with no obvious rule.The emission peaks of Ba-doped Sr3SiO5∶Ce3+,Li+ and Sr3SiO5∶Eu2+ shifted to longer wavelength.Both of them can be used for packaging white-LED with NUV,UV and blue LED chip.

Abstract:The shift of the emission band to longer wavelength (yellow-orange) of the Ba2MgSi2−xAlxO7: 0.1Eu2+ phosphor under the 350–450nm excitation range has been achieved by adding the codoping element (Mn2+) in the host. The single-host silicate phosphor for WLED, Ba2MgSi2−xAlxO7: 0.1Eu2+, 0.1Mn2+ was prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction. It was found experimentally that, its three-color emission peaks are situated at 623, 501 and 438nm, respectively, under excitation of 350–450nm irradiation. The emission peaks at 438 and 501nm originate from the transition 5d to 4f of Eu2+ ions that occupy the two Ba2+ sites in the crystal of Ba2MgSi2−x AlxO7, while the 623nm emission is attributed to the energy transfer from Eu2+ ions to Mn2+ ions. The white light can be obtained by mixing the three emission colors of blue (438nm), green (501nm) and red (623nm) in the single host. When the concentrations of the Al3+, Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions were 0.4, 0.1 and 0.1mol, respectively, the sample presented intense white emission. The addition of Al ion to the host leads to a substantial change of intensity ratio between blue and green emissions. White light could be obtained by combining this phosphor with 405nm light-emitting diodes. The near-ultraviolet GaN-based Ba2MgSi1.7 Al0.3O7: 0.1Eu2+, 0.1Mn2+ LED achieves good color rendering of over 85.

Abstract:A blue-emitting phosphor, BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ (BAM) and a yellow–orange phosphor, Ba2+-codoped Sr3SiO5:Eu2+ were prepared by the solid-state reaction. Excitation and emission spectra results showed that BAM and Ba2+-codoped Sr3SiO5:Eu2+ can be efficiently excited by near-ultraviolet (n-UV)–visible light from 250 to 440nm. The effects of the doped-Eu2+ concentration in BAM and Ba2+-codoped Sr3SiO5:Eu2+ on the photoluminescence were investigated in detail. White light-emitting diodes (LED) was obtained by combining n-UV LED chip (GaN-based 380nm emitting) with BaMgAl10O17:0.09Eu2+ and 0.1Ba2+-codoped Sr3SiO5: 0.2Eu2+ phosphors with the characteristic of color-rendering index of 86, CIE chromaticity coordinates (x,y) of (0.3216,0.3096), and color temperature Tc of 5700K. As the current increases, the relative intensity simultaneously increases. The CIE chromaticity coordinates (x,y) of the white LED tends to decrease. The correlated color temperature Tc increases from 4100 to 7500K and the color-rendering index Ra increases from 82 to 87 simultaneously.

Abstract:A near-UV excited phosphor, Y4Si2O7N2: Ce3+, was synthesized using a solid-state reaction. The crystal structure and luminescence properties were studied. Y4Si2O7N2 crystallizes in a monoclinic unit cell with space group P2(1)/c, lattice constants a = 7.5678(2) angstrom, b = 10.4529(1) angstrom, c = 10.7779(3) angstrom and beta = 110.06 degrees, and cell volume = 800.85(2) angstrom(3). The crystal structure of Y4Si2O7N2, featuring Si(O,N) 4 polyhedra, is provided, and there are four different Y3+ coordination environments with two different coordination numbers in the structure. Ce3+-doped Y4Si2O7N2 exhibited a broad emission band, and the maximum emission wavelength could be tuned from blue (lambda(em) = 450 nm) to green (lambda(em) = 515 nm) by increasing the concentration of Ce3+. The quantum efficiency was determined to be about 47%. The results show that Y4Si2O7N2:Ce3+ is a candidate for use as a conversion phosphor for near-UV white LED applications.

Abstract:A novel colour‐tunable emitting Y10Al2Si3O18N4:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphor for n‐UV white LEDs was synthesized using a high‐temperature solid‐state reaction. The colour point of the obtained powders can be varied from blue (0.177, 0.240) to green (0.211, 0.382) by tuning the relative proportion of Ce3+/Tb3+. In the present work, a novel n‐UV convertible colour‐tunable emitting phosphor was obtained based on the efficient Ce3+‐Tb3+ energy transfer in the Y10Al2Si3O18N4 host. By properly controlling the ratio of Ce3+/Tb3+, the colour hue of the obtained powder covered the blue and green regions, under excitation of 365 nm. The steady‐state and dynamic‐state luminescence measurement was performed to shed light on the related mechanism, which was justified by the electronic dipole–quadrupole dominating the related energy transfer process. Preliminary studies showed that Y10Al2Si3O18N4:Ce3+,Tb3+ can be promising as an inorganic phosphor for white LED applications.

Abstract:At present, there are still challenges in developing highly efficient and thermally stable phosphors for ultraviolet/near ultraviolet-white light emitting diodes (UV/NUV-WLEDs). Herein, we use traditional high-temperature solid-state reactions to prepare blue-emitting phosphors Lu5-xBa6B9O27:xCe3+ (0.1% ≤ x ≤ 3.0%) and Lu4.975Ba6-ySryB9O27:0.5%Ce3+ (0% ≤ y ≤ 20%), and green-emitting phosphors Lu4.975-zBa6B9O27:0.5%Ce3+,zTb3+ (0% ≤ z ≤ 16%), abbreviated as LBB:xCe3+, LBB:0.5%Ce3+,ySr2+ and LBB:0.5%Ce3+,zTb3+, respectively. Upon 340 nm excitation, LBB:Ce3+ exhibits an asymmetric blue emission ranging from 360 nm to 480 nm. Furthermore, the emission intensity of LBB:0.5%Ce3+ increased 4.8-fold without a spectral shift through the partial substitution of Sr2+ for Ba2+. Through constructing the Ce3+ → Tb3+ energy transfer in the LBB structure, the temperature-dependent integral emission intensity at 483 K improved from only 25% to 68% of the intensity at 303 K due to the existence of fast energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+. The related results indicate that LBB:xCe3+, LBB:0.5%Ce3+,ySr2+ and LBB:0.5%Ce3+,zTb3+ phosphors can be used for UV/NUV-WLEDs.

Abstract:Non-rare-earth Mn4+-activated red-emitting oxide phosphors have emerged as potential alternatives of typical Eu2+ doped nitrides owing to broad-band absorption, narrow-band emission, high color purity and low cost. In this work, highly efficient CaAl12O19:Mn4+ microspheres with uniform size distributions were first prepared by combining an epoxide-driven sol-gel method with heat treatment in oxygen atmosphere. The spherical morphology is beneficial to reduce scattering of light to enhance the photoluminescence of the phosphor. This phosphor shows red emission attributed to Mn4+: 2Eg → 4A2g spin-forbidden transition in the range of 600~750 nm under excitation at 340 nm. Partitioning Mg2+ in the host was found to enhance Mn4+ luminescence because of charge balance effect and the proposed mechanisms were discussed. The luminescence quantum yield of CaAl11.7576O19:0.0024Mn4+, 0.24Mg2+ microspheres which were heat treated for 4 h at 1300 °C was measured to be 56.1%. The white LED device based on the glass ceramic containing phosphors was found to show a high-color-rendering index of 96 and a low correlated color temperature of 4522 K. The results indicate that CaAl12O19:Mn4+ microspheres have great potential for near-ultraviolet LEDs on full-spectrum lighting.

Abstract:CaGdGaAl2O7 and CaGdGaAl2O7:Ce(3+),Tb(3+) have been synthesized by a traditional solid state reaction for the first time. The Rietveld refinement confirmed that CaGdGaAl2O7 has a tetragonal crystal system with the space group P4[combining macron]21m. The photoluminescence properties show that the obtained phosphors can be efficiently excited in the range from 330 to 400 nm, which matches perfectly with commercial UV LED chips. A tunable blue-green emitting CaGdGaAl2O7:Ce(3+),Tb(3+) phosphor has been obtained, by codoping Ce(3+) and Tb(3+) ions into the host and varying their relative ratios, and may be a good candidate for blue-green components in UV white LEDs. The luminescence properties and lifetimes reveal an efficient energy transfer from the Ce(3+) to Tb(3+) ions. The energy transfer is demonstrated to be a dipole-quadrupole mechanism, and the critical distance for Ce(3+) to Tb(3+) calculated by the concentration quenching is 12.25 Å.
Eu2+-activated MgAl2Si4O6N4: a novel oxonitridoalumosilicate blue phosphor for white LEDs

Abstract:Recently, blue-emitting phosphors have attracted great interest due to their application in full-spectrum white light illumination. In this paper, a novel blue-emitting MgAl2Si4O6N4:Eu2+ phosphor was successfully synthesized through the solid-state reaction method in a reducing atmosphere. Under the excitation of near-ultraviolet (n-UV) light, the MgAl2Si4O6N4:0.02Eu2+ phosphor effectively emits a broad blue emission band centered at 456 nm with the FWHM as large as 81 nm. With the increasing Eu2+ concentration, the emission bands of MgAl2Si4O6N4:Eu2+ shift to a shorter wavelength and the FWHMs broaden gradually. Moreover, the MgAl2Si4O6N4:0.02Eu2+ phosphor exhibits a slight thermal quenching at a higher temperature. After fabricating the as-prepared MgAl2Si4O6N4:0.02Eu2+ phosphor into a white LED device, the intense neutral white light emission is obtained with excellent CRI (87.4) and CCT (5645 K). These results suggest that the blue MgAl2Si4O6N4:Eu2+ phosphor is a promising candidate in n-UV excited white LEDs.

Abstract:A green-emitting nitride phosphor Ca1.4Al2.8Si9.2N16:Ce3+, Li+ (CASN:Ce) has been successfully synthesized which is applicable to near-ultraviolet based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and field emission displays (FEDs). The characteristic photoluminescence (PL) properties were studied in detail by PL excitation, emission spectra and time-resolved spectroscopy. CASN:0.10Ce exhibits broad-band green emission centered at ∼525 nm (FWHM ≈ 135 nm) under 395 nm excitation and with excellent thermal stability. The effect of host lattice composition on PL properties was also discussed. The cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra as a function of accelerating voltage and probe current were also studied. Excellent degradation resistance properties with good color stability were obtained by continuous low-voltage electron-beam excitation of the phosphor.
Efficient Blue-emitting Phosphor SrLu2O4:Ce3+ with High Thermal Stability for Near Ultraviolet (~400 nm) LED-Chip based White LEDs

Abstract:Blue-emitting phosphors for near ultraviolet (NUV) based tri-color RGB phosphor blend converted white light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been extensively investigated in the past few years. LED chip peaked near 400 nm is the most efficient among the NUV chips currently. However, most of blue phosphors show inefficient excitation around 400 nm. Herein, a novel blue phosphor SrLu2O4:Ce3+ matching well with near 400 nm chip and showing high thermal stability has been developed. The photoluminescence spectrum presents a broad emission band peaking at 460 nm with a bandwidth of nearly 90 nm. By optimizing the Ce3+ concentration, an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) as high as 76% was achieved. Furthermore, 86% of the room-temperature emission intensity is still maintained at 150 °C, indicating a good thermal stability and practicality. A series of white LEDs were fabricated based on 405 nm chips coated with a blend of the new blue phosphor with the commercial yellow and red phosphors. High color rendering indexes (≥90) were achieved while the correlated color temperature was tuneable in the range of 3094 to 8990 K. These results suggest that SrLu2O4:Ce3+ can be utilized as a blue-emitting phosphor in NUV based white LEDs.
Design and Research of a Self-Activated Orange Magnesium Boron Nitride Phosphor with Its Application in W-LEDs

Abstract:In recent years, the rare-earth elements in white light-emitting phosphors have a problem of increased demand and high price. To overcome these disadvantages, defects have been considered to act as new efficient luminescent centers to replace rare-earth elements. In this work, a rare-earth free self-activated orange light emitting phosphor of single-phase magnesium boron nitride, Mg3BN3, was successfully designed and synthesized by a relatively simple solid-state reaction. Its crystal structure and electronic structure have been measured using Rietveld refinement on the basis of X-ray diffraction data and density functional theory (DFT). The results show that Mg3BN3 crystallizes in a centrosymmetric hexagonal phase with plenty of N[double bond, length as m-dash]B[double bond, length as m-dash]N double bonds and has a direct bandgap. The SEM and TEM images and Raman spectra exhibit the sample's good dispersibility and great crystallinity. Under excitation at 397 nm, a broad emission band with orange light emission peaked at 617 nm can be obtained. It is speculated to result from the defect energy levels formed by vacancies, which can also lead to tunability of the emission peak at about 100 nm. The thermal quenching shows that Mg3BN3 at 200 °C still has more than 40% of the initial intensity at room temperature. All these results indicate that the self-activated light emitting phosphors of Mg3BN3 are a potential candidate for n-UV LED applications.
A Single-Phase Ba 9 Lu 2 Si 6 O 24 :Eu 2+ , Ce 3+ , Mn 2+ Phosphor with Tunable Full-Color Emission for NUV-based White LED Applications

Abstract:We obtained a single phase BLS:Eu2+, Ce3+, Mn2+ phosphor by solid-state reactions. Eu2+, Ce3+, and Mn2+ gives rise to the blue, green, and red emission, respectively. The Mn2+ red emission can be effectively enhanced via energy transfers from both Eu2+ and Ce3+. Thus a tunable full color emission from 410 to 750 nm was realized in this single phosphor. The Eu2+ -> Mn2+ energy transfer mechanism was investigated by the fluorescence decay curves. This single phosphor exhibits an efficient excitation band covering from 390 to 410 nm, which matches well with the emission light of the efficient NUV chips. The optimized BLS:Eu2+, Ce3+, Mn2+ phosphor shows a high quantum efficient of similar to 62% and a good color stability. When this single phosphor was combined with a 395 nm NUV-chip, an ideal white LED with a high color render index (CRI) of 85 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6300 K was obtained. This demonstrates the promising application of the BLS:Eu2+, Ce3+, Mn2+ single phosphor for the NUV-based white LEDs. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of yellow-emitting oxynitride Ca0.65Si10Al2O0.7N15.3:xEu(2+) phosphors with alpha-sialon structure were synthesized. The phase composition and crystal structure were identified by X-ray diffraction and the Rietveld refinement. The excitation and emission spectra, reflectance spectra and thermal stability were investigated in detail, respectively. Results show that CCa0.65Si10Al2O0.7N15.3:xEu(2+) phosphors can be efficiently excited by UV-Vis light in the broad range of 290-450 nm and exhibit broad emission spectra peaking at 550-575 nm. The concentration quenching mechanism are discussed in detail and determined to be the dipole-dipole interaction. When the temperature increased to 150 degrees C, the emission intensity of Ca0.65Si10Al2O0.7N15.3:xEu(2+) phosphor is 88.46% of the initial value at room temperature. White LED was fabricated with N-UV LED chip combined with blue Ca3Si2O4N2:Ce3+ and yellow Ca0.65Si10Al2O0.7N15.3:xEu(2+) phosphors. The color rendering index and correlated color temperature of this white LED were measured to 78.94 and 6728.12 K, respectively. All above results demonstrate that the as prepared Ca0.65Si10Al2O0.7N15.3:xEu(2+) may serve as a potential yellow phosphor for N-UV w-LEDs. (C) 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Under excitation at 365 nm, the phosphor exhibited a broad band blue emission with peak at 440 nm, which was ascribed to the 4f --> 5d transition of Ce3+, and the color coordinate was (0.1602, 0.0849). When the temperature increased to 150 °C, the luminescence intensity of the Mg2Al4Si5O18:0.06Ce3+ phosphor was 55.73% of the initial value at room temperature. The activation energy ΔE was calculated to be 0.25 eV, which proved the good thermal stability of the sample. The energy transfer critical distance between Ce3+ ions in Mg2Al4Si5O18 host were also calculated. The above results indicate that the Mg2Al4Si5O18:Ce3+ is a promising candidate as a blue-emitting near ultraviolet convertible phosphor for application in white light emitting diodes (WLEDs).

Abstract:Phosphor-converted white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs), with high luminous efficiency, low energy consumption, extended lifetime, and eco-friendly nature, have revolutionized various industries. Among them, an alkaline earth silicate-based phosphor host, Na4CaSi3O9, shows good crystal structure stability and flexible properties for diverse application. Here, Ce3+/Li+ singly doped and Ce3+/Li+/Tb3+ co-doped Na4CaSi3O9 phosphors are fabricated by the standard solid-state reaction approach. The Ce3+/Li+-activated phosphors show strong absorption within 200-400 nm and exhibit a blue emission centered at 423 nm. The quenching concentration of Ce3+ appears at x = 0.05 and can be attributed to the dipole-quadrupole interaction. When Tb3+ ions are co-doped, the Na4CaSi3O9:Ce3+,Li+,Tb3+ phosphor emission can be adjusted from blue to green under the irradiation of 365 nm through the dipole-dipole interaction induced energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions with a maximum value of 28.32%. This study highlights the Na4CaSi3O9:Ce3+,Li+,Tb3+ phosphors as a new and efficient material for w-LED applications. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel green phosphor LaMgAl11O19:Ho3+ was synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The LaMgAl11O19:Ho3+ phosphor showed a strong green emission peak centered at 550 nm and a weak red emission peak at 658 nm, when excited at 452 nm. The electric dipole-dipole interaction resulted in the concentration quenching, when the Ho3+ doping concentration was 0.1 mol. The emission intensity at 150 degrees C was shown to be 91.6% of that at room temperature, which verifies a good thermal stability for LaMgAl11O19:Ho3+ phosphors. The results indicated that LaMgAl11O19:Ho3+ material is a promising green phosphor for the application as near-UV/blue light-pumped w-LEDs. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
