Abstract:The catalytic activity of noble-metal nanocrystals is mainly determined by their sizes and the facets exposed on the surface. For single crystals, it has been demonstrated that the Pd(100) surface is catalytically more active than both Pd(110) and Pd(111) surfaces for the CO oxidation reaction. Here we report the synthesis of Pd nanocrystals enclosed by {100} facets with controllable sizes in the range of 6–18 nm by manipulating the rate of reduction of the precursor. UV-vis spectroscopy studies indicate that the rate of reduction of Na 2 PdCl 4 can be controlled by adjusting the concentrations of Br − and Cl − ions added to the reaction mixture. Pd nanocrystals with different sizes were immobilized on ZnO nanowires and evaluated as catalysts for CO oxidation. We found that the activity of this catalytic system for CO oxidation showed a strong dependence on the nanocrystal size. When the size of the Pd nanocrystals was reduced from 18 nm to 6 nm, the maximum conversion rate was significantly enhanced by a factor of ∼10 and the corresponding maximum conversion temperature was lowered by ∼80 °C.

Abstract:The development of strategies for the facile fabrication of noble metal/metal oxide nanomaterials with high catalytic activity and thermal stability is very challenging in the field of catalysis and for other relevant applications. Herein, we report a delicate multi-assembly method to prepare sandwich-like MnO2 Pd CeO2 hollow spheres wherein carbon spheres were employed as sacrificial templates. Typically, tiny Pd nanoparticles were deposited on the outer surface of the MnO2 shell, and the CeO2 overcoating served as a nanotrap to anchor the Pd particles on the MnO2 supports. The unique sandwich-like structure effectively prevents the Pd nanoparticles from aggregation during high-temperature calcination and catalyzation. The as-prepared MnO2-Pd-CeO2 hollow spheres exhibited enhanced stability and activity for CO oxidation. The excellent stability and activity exhibited by the as-synthesized MnO2-Pd-CeO2 hollow spheres can be ascribed to the sandwich-like structure and the strong synergistic effects between Pd and the hierarchical porous MnO2-CeO2 shell. We believe that this optimal structure design demonstrates a new approach for the synthesis of noble-metal-based catalysts with superior activity and stability.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodisperse CeO2 mesoporous hollow nanospheres composed of ceria nanocrystals were synthesized via a template-free and surfactant-assisted benign hydrothermal route. On the basis of a time-dependent experiment, the precipitation–dissolution–renucleation–assembly and Ostwald ripening processes mechanism is proposed for the formation of the CeO2 mesoporous hollow spheres. Poly(vinyl-pyrrolidone) (PVP) was applied as a surfactant to facilitate the reassembly of the CeO2 nanoparticles and the formation of the mesoporous shell of the hollow nanospheres. By increasing the amount of PVP, the mesoporous shell of the hollow spheres could be fabricated and became more apparent. Meanwhile, altering the amounts of H2O2 could control the size of the primary nanocrystals via affecting the nucleation/growth process of them, which is another key factor in the formation of the hollow structure and the uniform, monodispersed nanoparticles. The catalytic test results show that the as-obtained CeO2 mesoporous hollow spheres exhibited desirable CO catalytic properties. The synthesized Au–CeO2 nanospheres demonstrate a higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation than pure ceria nanospheres.

Abstract:Direct fabrication of core-shell or yolk-shell functional nanomaterials via a facile template-free method remains a challenge. In this work, we present a novel approach that involves straightforward chemical transformation and thermal treatment of the infinite coordination polymer particles to obtain composition-tunable CeO(2) yolk-shell structures. Uniform CeO(2) yolk-shell hollow spheres with a high surface area are promising support materials for tiny gold nanoparticles (ca. 4 nm), forming Au-CeO(2) nanocomposites which exhibit a remarkable catalytic activity and high stability for the reduction of p-nitrophenol. A possible mechanism for the formation of CeO(2) yolk-shell microspheres is also proposed.

Abstract:Well-dispersed CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized through a facile reflux method using carbon spheres as sacrificial templates. The shells of the hollow spheres, similar to 40 nm in thickness, consist of self-assembled 10-15 nm sized nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to study the structural features of the CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that most of the copper element is distributed on the surface of the CeO2 shell support. The CeO2-CuOx composite hollow spheres exhibited enhanced catalytic activity for CO oxidation: complete CO conversion could be obtained at 112 degrees C. The excellent catalytic activity could be ascribed to the hollow structure, high specific surface area and the strong synergistic interaction between CeO2 and CuOx.

Abstract:Exploring high-performance catalysts has always been a general concern for promoting extended heterocatalysis reactions. Here, Pt embedded highly-porous CeO2 hollow sphere (Pt/CeO2 HS) composites are developed by a one-pot template-free solvothermal method. Evolution mechanism studies unravel that the Pt/CeO2 HS composites are derived from a self-assembly-reduction-Ostwald ripening process, where Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) are embedded into ceria mesoporous hollow spheres. The as-developed embedment strategy is more facile, sustainable and cost-effective than conventional deposition approaches, ensuring the precise control of the location, distribution, and uniformity of Pt NPs throughout the outer shell of hollow spherical CeO2. Importantly, the Pt NP embedding process could be determined to play a key role in creating oxygen vacancies and activating surface chemisorbed oxygen. Besides that, the aggregation of Pt NPs can be efficiently inhibited in the Pt/CeO2 HS composites, and more active sites should be involved in catalytic reactions. All these advantages contribute to the strikingly improved performance as well as excellent stability of the Pt/CeO2 HS composites toward CO oxidation reaction compared with mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres (CeO2 NS) and Pt/CeO2 NS reference catalysts. These findings present a decent protocol for desgining noble metal/oxide hollow structural composites in heterogeneous catalysis.
Rod-Like Nanoporous CeO2 Modified by PdO Nanoparticles for CO Oxidation and Methane Combustion with High Catalytic Activity and Water Resistance

Abstract:A PdO/CeO2 composite with a rod-like nanoporous skeletal structure was prepared by combining the dealloying of Al-Ce-Pd alloy ribbons with calcination. For CO oxidation and CH4 combustion, the nanoporous PdO/CeO2 composite exhibits excellent catalytic activity, and the complete reaction temperatures of CO and CH4 are 80 °C and 380 °C, respectively. In addition, the composite possesses excellent cycle stability, CO2 toxicity, and water resistance, and the catalytic activity hardly decreases after 100 h of long-term stability testing in the presence of water vapour (2 × 105 ppm). The results of a series of characterizations indicate that the enhanced catalytic activity can be attributed to the good dispersion of the PdO nanoparticles, large specific surface area, strong redox capacity, interaction between PdO and CeO2, and more surface active oxygen on PdO. The results of the characterization and experiments also indicate that the PdO nanoparticles, prepared by combining dealloying and calcination, have a stronger catalytic activity than do Pd nanoparticles. Finally, a simple model is used to summarize the catalytic mechanism of the PdO/CeO2 composite. It is hoped that this work will provide insights into the development of high-activity catalysts.

Abstract:In this paper, we have successfully demonstrated the clean synthesis of high-quality Pd@CeO core@shell nanospheres with tunable Pd core sizes in water, and furthermore loaded the as-obtained Pd@CeO products on commercial γ-AlO electrostatic interaction. KBr here plays two key roles in inducing the growth and self-assembly of Pd@CeO core@shell nanospheres. First, Br ions can retard the reduction of Pd ions the formation of the more stable complex of [PdBr] so as to tune the size of Pd cores. Second, it greatly decreases the colloidal stability, and hence the surface polarity-weakened Pd and CeO NPs have to spontaneously self-assemble into more stable and ordered structures. Among different-sized Pd samples, the as-obtained 8 nm-Pd@CeO/AlO one exhibits the best performance in catalytic CO oxidation, which can catalyze 100% CO conversion into CO at 95 °C, which is much lower than the previously reported CeO-encapsulated Pd samples.

Abstract:A clean nonorganic synthetic method has been developed to fabricate the uniform pomegranate-like Pt@CeO2 multicore@shell nanospheres in a large scale. Under the effective protection of Ar atmosphere the redox reaction just simply happened between Ce(NO3)3 and K2PtCl4 in an alkaline aqueous solution, in which no other reducing agents or surfactants were added. The as-obtained nanospheres exhibited excellent structure stability even being calcined at 600 °C for 5 h. Moreover, the as-obtained Pt@CeO2 multicore@shell nanospheres can be further supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to form heterogeneous nanocatalyst, which has been successfully applied in the chemical reduction reaction of nitrophenol (NP) by ammonia borane (NH3BH3, dubbed as AB) instead of hazardous H2 or NaBH4.

Abstract:We report a photochemical synthesis of Pd/CeO2 catalysts with atomically dispersed Pd. Compared to atomically dispersed Pd/CeO2 with a cubic CeO2 support (Pd/CeO2-CP), atomically dispersed Pd/CeO2 with a truncated octahedral CeO2 support (Pd/CeO2-TOP) exhibited higher activity and selectivity, owing to the synergy between Pd atoms and the (111) surface of CeO2. When compared to Pd/CeO2 with Pd clusters and nanoparticles via chemical reduction, Pd/CeO2-TOP showed excellent activity with an enhancement factor of 324 in CO oxidation, as well as an activity enhancement by a factor of 344 in selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol.

Abstract:Pd@CeO2 core-shell nanostructures with a tunable Pd core size, shape, and nanostructure as well as a tunable CeO2 sheath thickness were obtained by a biomolecule-assisted method. The synthetic process is simple and green, as it involves only the heating of a mixture of Ce(NO3 )3 , l-arginine, and preformed Pd seeds in water without additives. Importantly, the synthesis is free of thiol groups and halide ions, thus providing a possible solution to the problem of secondary pollution by Pd nanoparticles in the sheath-coating process. The Pd/CeO2 nanostructures can be composited well with γ-Al2 O3 to create a heterogeneous catalyst. In subsequent tests of catalytic NO reduction by CO, Pd@CeO2 /Al2 O3 samples based on Pd cubes (6, 10, and 18 nm), Pd octahedra (6 nm), and Pd cuboctahedra (9 nm) as well as a simply loaded Pd cube (6 nm)-CeO2 /Al2 O3 sample were used as catalysts to investigate the effects of the Pd core size and shape and the hybrid nanostructure on the catalytic performance.

Abstract:Developing efficient supported Pd catalysts and understanding their catalytic mechanism in CO oxidation are challenging research topics in recent years. This paper describes the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles supported on CeO2 nanotubes via an alcohol reduction method. The effect of the support morphology on the catalytic reaction was explored. Subsequently, the performance of the prepared catalysts was investigated toward CO oxidation reaction and characterized by Nitrogen sorption, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and CO-temperature-programmed desorption techniques. The results indicated that the catalyst of Pd on CeO2 nanotubes exhibits excellent activity in CO oxidation at low temperatures, due to its large surface area, the high dispersion of Pd species, the mesoporous and tubular structure of the CeO2-nanotube support, the abundant Ce3+, formation of Pd–O–Ce bonding, and enhanced metal–support interaction on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of core-shell nanostructures with steerable morphologies and tailored performances have aroused abundant scientific studies for organic transformations. We here report the preparation of multifunctional and highly efficient core-shell microspheres, which bear a carbon-protected magnetic Fe3O4 core, a transition layer of active Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and an outer shell of mesoporous CeO2 (mCeO2). The composition and structure of the as-prepared Fe3O4@C-Pd@mCeO2 were thoroughly characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements. The well-designed microspheres have high dispersibility, convenient magnetic separability and good reusability as heterogeneous nanoreactors due to their unique structure. We illustrate the high efficiency of these nanocomposites in mediating the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction and the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The enhanced catalytic activity can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the CeO2 nanoparticles and noble metal NPs. A mechanism was further proposed to explain the improved catalytic activity. This peculiar core-shell nanostructure renders the nanospheres to be an approachable and attractive catalyst system for various catalytic organic industrial processes.

Abstract:We report the design and realization of double shelled @CeO2/M@M/TiO2 (M = Au and/or Pd) nanospheres with dual noble metal nanoparticles encapsulated in metal oxide shells via a layer-by-layer deposition process followed by an alkali etching method. The resulting nanospheres possess uniform sizes, variable shell components and thicknesses, adjustable noble metal nanoparticles encapsulated, regulable chamber spaces between the two shells, and good structural stability, which can be used as unique microreactors with extremely high catalytic activity and stability in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction, benzyl aerobic alcohol oxidation, and 4-nitrophenol reduction reaction due to their structural features with multiple interactions and strong synergistic effects between the noble metal nanoparticles and metal oxide shells, and less depletion of catalytic active species. The designed double shelled hollow @CeO2/M@M/TiO2 nanocatalysts can be used as novel catalyst systems with highly efficient catalytic performance for various catalytic reactions depending on their shell components and noble metal nanoparticles encapsulated. The synthetic strategy provides a new methodology to design high-performance and multifunctional nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Co3O4/CeO2 multi-shelled nanospheres with various Ce/Co ratios for low temperature CO oxidation were fabricated by using a bimetallic coordination polymer as a self-sacrificial template. The obtained Co0.9Ce0.1O2-delta catalyst exhibited superior CO oxidation performance, which reached 100% conversion at 80 degrees C. After five-cycle tests, the conversion could also be maintained at approximately 100% with almost no activity loss. Furthermore, the effects of the CeO2 component on catalytic performance have been investigated by various advanced physicochemical characterization methods. This indicated that the addition of cerium can significantly increase the surface area, so as to enrich the oxygen vacancies and provide a higher degree of accessible active sites. This work proposed an alternative approach to construct multi-shelled nanosphere composites.

Abstract:Au/CeO2 hollow nanospheres were successfully synthesized by template method. Carbon spheres (CSs) were employed as the sacrificial templates, which were fabricated by hydrothermal method, and the shell of CeO2 precursor was formed on the surface of CSs through layer-by-layer self-assembled approach. Then, Au nanoparticles were deposited on the shell. Finally, the templates were removed by calcination and Au/CeO2 hollow spheres with hierarchically porous structure were obtained. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, TG-DSC, and BET analysis. The diameters and thickness of the nanospheres were about 250nm and 20nm, respectively. Samples with different loading amounts of Au were prepared and noted as L-Au/CeO2, M-Au/CeO2, and H-Au/CeO2, corresponding to the Au weight percentages of 1.8%, 4.2%, and 9.3%. The specific surface area of L-Au/CeO2 could reach 87.1m(2)/g, higher than that of M-Au/CeO2 (77.8m(2)/g), while M-Au/CeO2 showed the best catalytic activity that CO could be completely converted to CO2 at 81 degrees C. The CeO2, L-Au/CeO2, and M-Au/CeO2 hollow nanospheres showed excellent catalytic stability. Moreover, this method can be easily extended to the synthesis of other metal oxide hollow nanospheres compounded with Au nanoparticles.

Abstract:Monolayer films of highly catalytically active Pd@CeO2 core-shell nanocomposites were grafted onto a planar YSZ(100) (yttria-stabilized zirconia, YSZ) single crystal support that was functionalized with a CVD-deposited layer of triethoxy(octyl)silane (TEOOS). The resulting monolayer films were found to exhibit exceptionally high thermal stability compared to bare Pd nanoparticles with the Pd@CeO2 nanostructures remaining intact and highly dispersed upon calcining in air at temperatures in excess of 1000 K. The CeO2 shells were also shown to be more easily reduced than bulk CeO2, which may partially explain their unique activity as oxidation catalysts. The use of both TEOOS and tetradecyl-phosphonic acid (TDPA) as coupling agents for dispersing Pd@CeO2 core-shell nanocomposites onto a high surface area gamma-Al2O3 support is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We report the creation of highly efficient sandwich-like structured nanocatalysts consisting of magnetic Fe3O4 cores, porous SiO2 and CeO2 shells and coated with noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs). The nanocatalysts possess uniform sizes, variable shell compositions and thicknesses, adjustable noble metal nanoparticle coatings, tunable morphologies and good structural stability, and can be used as unique catalysts with extremely high catalytic activity and stability for the 4-nitrophenol reduction reaction due to their structural features with multiple interactions and strong synergistic effects between the noble metal nanoparticles and the cerium oxide shells. The designed double shelled Fe3O4@SiO2@CeO2/M nanocatalysts can be used as novel catalyst systems with highly efficient catalytic performance for various catalytic reactions depending on their shell components and noble nanoparticle coating. The synthetic strategy provides a new methodology to design high-performance and recyclable nanocatalysts.
