Abstract:Let 𝒟 be a nontrivial symmetric (v,k,λ) design, and G be a subgroup of the full automorphism group of 𝒟. In this paper we prove that if G acts flag-transitively, point-primitively on 𝒟 and Soc(G)= PSL(2,q), then D has parameters (7, 3, 1), (7, 4, 2), (11, 5, 2), (11, 6, 3) or (15, 8, 4).

Abstract:In this article, we study 2-designs with λ=2 admitting a flag-transitive and point-primitive almost simple automorphism group G with socle X a finite simple classical group of Lie type. We prove that such a design belongs to an infinite family of 2-designs with parameter set ((3n−1)/2,3,2) and X=PSLn(3) for some n⩾3 , or X=PSL2(q) with point-stabiliser D2(q+1)/gcd⁡(2,q−1) , or it is isomorphic to the 2-design with parameter set (6,3,2) , (7,4,2) , (10,4,2) , (11,5,2) , (28,7,2) , (28,3,2) , (36,6,2) or (126,6,2) .

Abstract:In this article, we investigate symmetric designs admitting a flag-transitive and point-primitive affine automorphism group. We prove that if an automorphism group $G$ of a symmetric $(v,k,\lambda)$ design with $\lambda$ prime is point-primitive of affine type, then $G=2^{6}{:}\mathrm{S}_{6}$ and $(v,k,\lambda)=(16,6,2)$, or $G$ is a subgroup of $\mathrm{A\Gamma L}_{1}(q)$ for some odd prime power $q$. In conclusion, we present a classification of flag-transitive and point-primitive symmetric designs with $\lambda$ prime, which says that such an incidence structure is a projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$, it has parameter set $(15,7,3)$, $(7, 4, 2)$, $(11, 5, 2)$, $(11, 6, 2)$, $(16,6,2)$ or $(45, 12, 3)$, or $v=p^d$ where $p$ is an odd prime and the automorphism group is a subgroup of $\mathrm{A\Gamma L}_{1}(q)$.

Abstract:We study 2- ( v , k , λ ) designs D = ( P , B ) admitting a flag-transitive automorphism group G, where k = p 2 or p 3 , and p is prime. We prove that if k = p 2 , then G must be point-primitive, and G is of affine or almost simple type except for two examples. If k = p 3 , and G is point-primitive, then G is of affine, almost simple, or product type with G ≤ H ≀ S 2 acting on P = Δ × Δ , where H is a primitive group on Δ. Furthermore, if G is point-imprimitive with a system Σ of imprimitivity consisting of d classes of size c, we determine the parameters ( v , k , μ , c , d ) , where μ is the size of the nonempty set B ∩ C with B ∈ B and C ∈ Σ . Moreover, some infinite families of flag-transitive 2- ( v , p 3 , λ ) designs are also constructed.

Abstract:Let 𝒮 be a finite thick generalized quadrangle, and suppose that G is an automorphism group of 𝒮 . If G acts primitively on both the points and lines of 𝒮 , then it is known that G must be almost simple. In this paper, we show that if the socle of G is PSL(2,q) with q≥ 4 , then q=9 and 𝒮 is the unique generalized quadrangle of order 2.

Abstract:In this article, we study $2$-designs with $\lambda=2$ admitting a flag-transitive almost simple automorphism group with socle a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type, and we prove that such a $2$-design does not exist. In conclusion, we present a classification of $2$-designs with $\lambda=2$ admitting flag-transitive and point-primitive automorphism groups of almost simple type, which states that such a $2$-design belongs to an infinite family of $2$-designs with parameter set $((3^n-1)/2,3,2)$ and $X=PSL_n(3)$ for some $n\geq 3$, or it is isomorphic to the $2$-design with parameter set $(6,3,2)$, $(7,4,2)$, $(10,4,2)$, $(10,4,2)$, $(11,5,2)$, $(28,7,2)$, $(28,3,2)$, $(36,6,2)$, $(126,6,2)$ or $(176,8,2)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that for a non-trivial quasi-symmetric $2$-design $\mathcal{D}$ with two block intersection numbers $x=0$ and $2\leq y\leq10$, if $G\leq \mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{D})$ is flag-transitive and point-primitive, then $G$ is either of affine type or almost simple type. Moreover, we prove that the socle of $G$ cannot be an alternating group. If the socle of $G$ is a sporadic group, then $\mathcal{D}$ and $G$ must be one of the following: $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-$(12,6,5)$ design with block intersection numbers $0,3$ and $G=\mathrm{M}_{11}$, or $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-$(22,6,5)$ design with block intersection numbers $0,2$ and $G=\mathrm{M}_{22}$ or $\mathrm{M}_{22}:2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a complete classification of $2$-$(v,k,2)$ design admitting a flag-transitive automorphism group of affine type with the only exception of the semilinear $1$-dimensional group. Alongside this analysis we provide a construction of seven new families of such flag-transitive $2$-designs, two of them infinite, and some of them involve remarkable objects such as $t$-spreads, translation planes, quadrics and Segre varieties.

Abstract:A Steiner quadruple system of order v is a 3-(v,4,1) design, and will be denoted SQS(v). Using the classification of finite 2-transitive permutation groups all SQS(v) with a flag-transitive automorphism group are completely classified, thus solving the "still open and longstanding problem of classifying all flag-transitive 3-(v,k,1) designs" for the smallest value of k. Moreover, a generalization of a result of H. Lueneburg (1965, Math. Z. 89, 82-90) is achieved.

Abstract:In this article, we study symmetric designs admitting flag-transitive, point-imprimitive almost simple automorphism groups with socle sporadic simple groups. As a corollary, we present a classification of symmetric designs admitting flag-transitive automorphism group whose socle is a sporadic simple group, and in conclusion, there are exactly seven such designs, one of which admits a point-imprimitive automorphism group and the remaining are point-primitive.

Abstract:Consider the direct product of symmetric groups $S_c\times S_n$ and its natural action on $\mathcal{P}=C\times N$, where $|C|=c$ and $|N|=n$. We characterize the structure of 2-designs with point set $\mathcal{P}$ admitting flag-transitive, point-imprimitive automorphism groups $H\leq S_c\times S_n$. As an example of its applications, we show that $H$ cannot be any subgroup of $D_{2c}\times S_n$ or $S_c\times D_{2n}$. Besides, some families of 2-designs admitting flag-transitive automorphism groups $S_c\times S_n$ are constructed by using complete bipartite graphs and cycles. Two families of these also admit flag-transitive, point-primitive automorphism groups $S_c\wr S_2,$ a family of which attain the Cameron-Praeger upper bound $v=(k-2)^2$.

Abstract:We construct two flag-transitive designs with the parameters of the title, and prove that these are the only two examples. One is point-primitive and related to unitary geometry, while the other is point-imprimitive and constructed from a 1-dimensional affine space. This classification may be contrasted with a construction by Mathon and Spence in 1996 of more than 3,700 designs with these parameters, almost a third of which had a trivial automorphism group.

Abstract:We give a construction of a family of designs with a specified point-partition, and determine the subgroup of automorphisms leaving invariant the point-partition. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a design in the family to possess a flag-transitive group of automorphisms preserving the specified point-partition. We give examples of flag-transitive designs in the family, including a new symmetric $2$-$(1408,336,80)$ design with automorphism group $2^{12}:((3\cdot\mathrm{M}_{22}):2)$, and a construction of one of the families of the symplectic designs (the designs $S^-(n)$) exhibiting a flag-transitive, point-imprimitive automorphism group.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a non-trivial $G$-block-transitive $3$-$(v,k,1)$ design, where $T\leq G \leq \mathrm{Aut}(T)$ for some finite non-abelian simple group $T$. It is proved that if $T$ is a simple exceptional group of Lie type, then $T$ is either the Suzuki group ${}^2B_2(q)$ or $G_2(q)$.
