Abstract:We prove that the eigencurve associated to a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb Q$ satisfies the following properties, as conjectured by Coleman-Mazur and Buzzard-Kilford: (a) over the boundary annuli of the weight space, the eigencurve is a disjoint union of (countably) infinitely many connected components each finite and flat over the weight annuli, (b) the $U_p$-slopes of points on each fixed connected component are proportional to the $p$-adic valuations of the parameter on the weight space, and (c) the sequence of the slope ratios form a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions with the same common difference. In particular, as a point moving on an irreducible connected component of the eigencurve towards the boundary, the slope converges to zero.

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:Under a stronger genericity condition, we prove the local analogue of ghost conjecture of Bergdall and Pollack. As applications, we deduce in this case (a) a folklore conjecture of Breuil--Buzzard--Emerton on the crystalline slopes of Kisin's crystabelian deformation spaces, (b) Gouvea's $\lfloor\frac{k-1}{p+1}\rfloor$-conjecture on slopes of modular forms, and (c) the finiteness of irreducible components of the eigencurve. In addition, applying combinatorial arguments by Bergdall and Pollack, and by Ren, we deduce as corollaries in the reducible and strongly generic case, (d) Gouvea--Mazur conjecture, (e) a variant of Gouvea's conjecture on slope distributions, and (f) a refined version of Coleman's spectral halo conjecture.

A proof for Ando's theorem on norm-coherent coordinates via the Coleman norm operator

Abstract:Ando established an algebraic criterion for when a complex orientation for a Morava E-theory is an $H_\infty$-map. The criterion relates such an orientation to a specific property of the formal group associated to the E-theory, namely, a norm coherence condition on its coordinate. On the other hand, Coleman constructed a norm operator for interpolating division values in local fields, which depends on a Lubin--Tate formal group law. These formal group laws are important tools in explicit local class field theory. In this article, we give a conceptual proof for Ando's theorem using the Coleman norm operator via the bridge of formal group laws between topology and arithmetic.

$p$-adic rigidity of eigenforms of infinite slope

Abstract:We give a notion of $p$-adic families of Hecke eigenforms that allows for the slope of the forms be infinite at $p$. We prove that, contrary to the case of finite slope when every eigenform lives in a Hida or Coleman family, the only families of infinite slope are either twists of Hida or Coleman families with Dirichlet characters of $p$-power conductor, or non-ordinary families with complex multiplication. Our proof goes via a local study of deformations of potentially trianguline Galois representations, relying on work of Berger and Chenevier, and a global input coming from an analogue of a result of Balasubramanyam, Ghate and Vatsal on a Greenberg-type conjecture for families of Hilbert modular forms.

Abstract:In this work, we provide some novel results that establish both the existence of Henig global proper efficient points and their density in the efficient set for vector optimization problems in arbitrary normed spaces. Our results do not require the assumption of convexity, and in certain cases, can be applied to unbounded sets. However, it is important to note that a weak compactness condition on the set (or on a section of it) and a separation property between the order cone and its conical neighbourhoods remains necessary. The weak compactness condition ensures that certain convergence properties hold. The separation property enables the interpolation of a family of Bishop-Phelps cones between the order cone and each of its conic neighbourhoods. This interpolation, combined with the proper handling of two distinct types of conic neighbourhoods, plays a crucial role in the proofs of our results, which include as a particular case other results that have already been established under more restrictive conditions.

Cauchy transforms and Szegő projections in dual Hardy spaces: inequalities and Möbius invariance

Abstract:Dual pairs of interior and exterior Hardy spaces associated to a simple closed Lipschitz planar curve are considered, leading to a Möbius invariant function bounding the norm of the Cauchy transform $\bf{C}$ from below. This function is shown to satisfy strong rigidity properties and is closely connected via the Berezin transform to the square of the Kerzman-Stein operator. Explicit example calculations are presented. For ellipses, a new asymptotically sharp lower bound on the norm of $\bf{C}$ is produced.

Abstract:We generalize bounds of Liu-Wan-Xiao for slopes in eigencurves for definite unitary groups of rank $2$ to slopes in eigenvarieties for definite unitary groups of any rank. We show that for a definite unitary group of rank $n$, the Newton polygon of the characteristic power series of the $U_p$ Hecke operator has exact growth rate $x^{1+\frac2{n(n-1)}}$, times a constant proportional to the distance of the weight from the boundary of weight space. The proof goes through the classification of forms associated to principal series representations. We also give a consequence for the geometry of these eigenvarieties over the boundary of weight space.

Abstract:Let p be a prime number. We study the slopes of U_p -eigenvalues on the subspace of modular forms that can be transferred to a definite quaternion algebra. We give a sharp lower bound of the corresponding Newton polygon. The computation happens over a definite quaternion algebra by Jacquet–Langlands correspondence; it generalizes a prior work of Jacobs (Slopes of compact hecke operators. Thesis, University of London, Imperial College, 2004 ) who treated the case of p=3 with a particular level. In case when the modular forms have a finite character of conductor highly divisible by p , we improve the lower bound to show that the slopes of U_p -eigenvalues grow roughly like arithmetic progressions as the weight k increases. This is the first very positive evidence for Buzzard–Kilford’s conjecture on the behavior of the eigencurve near the boundary of the weight space, that is proved for arbitrary p and general level. We give the exact formula of a fraction of the slope sequence.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of the geometry of Hilbert $p$-adic eigenvarieties at parallel weight one intersection points of their cuspidal and Eisenstein loci. The Galois theoretic approach presents genuine difficulties due to the lack of good deformation theory for pseudo-characters irregular at $p$ and reflects the rich local geometry at such points. We believe that our geometric results lead to deeper insight into the arithmetic of Hilbert automorphic forms and we produce several applications in Iwasawa theory to support that.

On properties and numerical computation of critical points of eigencurves of bivariate matrix pencils

Abstract:We investigate critical points of eigencurves of bivariate matrix pencils $A+\lambda B +\mu C$. Points $(\lambda,\mu)$ for which $\det(A+\lambda B+\mu C)=0$ form algebraic curves in $\mathbb C^2$ and we focus on points where $\mu'(\lambda)=0$. Such points are referred to as zero-group-velocity (ZGV) points, following terminology from engineering applications. We provide a general theory for the ZGV points and show that they form a subset (with equality in the generic case) of the 2D points $(\lambda_0,\mu_0)$, where $\lambda_0$ is a multiple eigenvalue of the pencil $(A+\mu_0 C)+\lambda B$, or, equivalently, there exist nonzero $x$ and $y$ such that $(A+\lambda_0 B+\mu_0 C)x=0$, $y^H(A+\lambda_0 B+\mu_0 C)=0$, and $y^HBx=0$. We introduce three numerical methods for computing 2D and ZGV points. The first method calculates all 2D (ZGV) points from the eigenvalues of a related singular two-parameter eigenvalue problem. The second method employs a projected regular two-parameter eigenvalue problem to compute either all eigenvalues or only a subset of eigenvalues close to a given target. The third approach is a locally convergent Gauss--Newton-type method that computes a single 2D point from an inital approximation, the later can be provided for all 2D points via the method of fixed relative distance by Jarlebring, Kvaal, and Michiels. In our numerical examples we use these methods to compute 2D-eigenvalues, solve double eigenvalue problems, determine ZGV points of a parameter-dependent quadratic eigenvalue problem, evaluate the distance to instability of a stable matrix, and find critical points of eigencurves of a two-parameter Sturm-Liouville problem.

Abstract: In this paper we study various aspects of the Ekedahl-Serre problem. We formulate questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and Coleman-Oort type for general weakly special subvarieties in the Siegel moduli space, propose a conjecture relating these two questions, and provide examples supporting these questions. The main new result is an upper bound of genera for curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isogeneous to products of elliptic curves satisfying the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and we also refine previous results showing that certain weakly special subvarieties only meet the open Torelli locus in at most finitely many points.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that, if a cuspidal overconvergent Hilbert cuspidal form has small slopes under $U_p$-operators, then it is classical. Our method follows the original cohomological approach of Coleman. The key ingredient of the proof is giving an explicit description of the Goren-Oort stratification of the special fiber of the Hilbert modular variety. A byproduct of the proof is to show that, at least when $p$ is inert, of the rigid cohomology of the ordinary locus has the same image as the classical forms in the Grothendieck group of Hecke modules.

On an Erdős similarity problem in the large

Abstract:In a recent paper, Kolountzakis and Papageorgiou ask if for every $\epsilon \in (0,1)$, there exists a set $S \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ such that $\vert S \cap I\vert \geq 1 - \epsilon$ for every interval $I \subset \mathbb{R}$ with unit length, but that does not contain any affine copy of a given increasing sequence of exponential growth or faster. This question is an analogue of the well-known Erdős similarity problem. In this paper, we show that for each sequence of real numbers whose integer parts form a set of positive upper Banach density, one can explicitly construct such a set $S$ that contains no affine copy of that sequence. Since there exist sequences of arbitrarily rapid growth that satisfy this condition, our result answers Kolountzakis and Papageorgiou's question in the affirmative. A key ingredient of our proof is a generalization of results by Amice, Kahane, and Haight from metric number theory. In addition, we construct a set $S$ with the required property -- but with $\epsilon \in (1/2, 1)$ -- that contains no affine copy of $\{2^n\}$.

Abstract:Here I give a direct proof that smooth curves with distinct marked points are asymptotically Hilbert stable with respect to a wide range of parameter spaces and linearizations. This result can be used to construct the coarse moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable pointed curves \bar M_g,n and Hassett's moduli spaces of weighted pointed curves \bar M_g,A (though the full construction of the moduli spaces is not contained in this paper, only the stability proof). My proof follows Gieseker's approach to reduce to the GIT problem to a combinatorial problem, though the solution is very different. The action of any 1-PS lambda on a curve C in P^N gives rise to weighted filtrations of H^0 (C, O(1)) and H^0 (C, O(m)), and I give a recipe in terms of the combinatorics of the base loci of the stages of these filtrations for showing that C is stable with respect to lambda.
