Abstract:The classical continued fraction is generalized for studying the rational approximation problem on multi-formal Laurent series in this paper, the construction is called m-continued fraction. It is proved that the approximants of an m-continued fraction converge to a multiformal Laurent series, and are best rational approximations to it; conversely for any multi-formal Laurent series an algorithm called m-CF transform is introduced to obtain its m-continued fraction expansions; moreover, strict m-continued fractions, which are m-continued fractions imposed with some additional conditions, and multi-formal Laurent series are in 1-1 correspondence. It is shown that m-continued fractions can be used to study the multi-sequence synthesis problem.

Abstract:For any formal Laurent series x=∑n=v∞cnz−n with coefficients cn lying in some given finite field, let x=[a0(x);a1(x),a2(x),…] be its continued fraction expansion. It is known that, with respect to the Haar measure, almost surely, the sum of degrees of partial quotients dega1(x)+⋯+degan(x) grows linearly. In this note, we quantify the exceptional sets of points with faster growth orders than linear ones by their Hausdorff dimension, which covers an earlier result by J. Wu.

Abstract:Bescovitch considered the Hausdorff dimensions of sets related to the sum of digits of real numbers represented in the dyadic expansions. In this paper, we provide an analogy for continued fraction expansions over the field of formal Laurent series. We also calculate the Hausdorff dimensions of sets of Laurent series which have given polynomial or exponential approximation orders. Such approximations converge faster than those of almost all Laurent series (with respect to the Haar measure).

Abstract:We construct continued fraction expansions for several families of the Laurent series in $\mathbb{Q}[[t^{-1}]]$. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first result of this kind since Gauss derived the continued fraction expansion for $(1+t)^r$, $r\in\mathbb{Q}$ in 1813. As an application, we apply an analogue of the hypergeometric method to one of those families and derive non-trivial lower bounds on the distance $|x - \frac{p}{q}|$ between one of the real roots of $3x^3 - 3tx^2-3ax+at$, $a,t\in\mathbb{Z}$ and any rational number, under relatively mild conditions on the parameters $a$ and $t$. We also show that every cubic irrational $x\in\mathbb{R}$ admits a (generalised) continued fraction expansion in a closed form that can be explicitly computed. Finally, we provide an infinite series of cubic irrationals $x$ that have arbitrarily (but finitely) many better-than-expected rational approximations. That is, they are such that for any $\tau< 3+\frac{15\ln 2}{24}\approx 3.4332...$ the inequality $||qx|| < (H(x)^{\tau} qe^{c\sqrt{\ln q}})^{-1}$ has many solutions in integer $q$.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a new multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithm and three known multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithms from the lattice basis reduction multisequence synthesis (LBRMS) algorithm with respect to the different choice of a parameter and so a continued fraction expansion is associated with a basis transformation. The new algorithm is similar to Dai's continued fraction algorithm [Z.D. Dai, K.P. Wang, D.F. Ye, m-Continued fraction algorithm on multi-Laurent series, Acta Arith. (2006) 1–21] but improves the latter effectively.

Abstract:Fractional calculus is the calculus of differentiation and integration of non-integer orders. In a recently paper (Annals of Physics 323 (2008) 2756-2778), the Fundamental Theorem of Fractional Calculus is highlighted. Based on this theorem, in this paper we introduce fractional series expansion method to fractional calculus. We define a kind of fractional Taylor series of an infinitely fractionally-differentiable function. Further, based on our definition we generalize hypergeometric functions and derive corresponding differential equations. For finitely fractionally-differentiable functions, we observe that the non-infinitely fractionally-differentiability is due to more than one fractional indices. We expand functions with two fractional indices and display how this kind of series expansion can help to solve fractional differential equations.

Abstract:Let $\beta > 1$ be a real number and $x \in [0,1)$ be an irrational number. We denote by $k_n(x)$ the exact number of partial quotients in the continued fraction expansion of $x$ given by the first $n$ digits in the $\beta$-expansion of $x$ ($n \in \mathbb{N}$). It is known that $k_n(x)/n$ converges to $(6\log2\log\beta)/\pi^2$ almost everywhere in the sense of Lebesgue measure. In this paper, we improve this result by proving that the Lebesgue measure of the set of $x \in [0,1)$ for which $k_n(x)/n$ deviates away from $(6\log2\log\beta)/\pi^2$ decays to 0 exponentially as $n$ tends to $\infty$, which generalizes the result of Faivre \cite{lesFai97} from $\beta = 10$ to any $\beta >1$. Moreover, we also discuss which of the $\beta$-expansion and continued fraction expansion yields the better approximations of real numbers.

Abstract:We present a new fractional Taylor formula for singular functions whose Caputo fractional derivatives are of bounded variation. It bridges and “interpolates” the usual Taylor formulas with two consecutive integer orders. This enables us to obtain an analogous formula for the Legendre expansion coefficient of this type of singular functions, and further derive the optimal (weighted) L ∞ -estimates and L 2 -estimates of the Legendre polynomial approximations. This set of results can enrich the existing theory for p and hp methods for singular problems, and answer some open questions posed in some recent literature.

Abstract:Let x is an element of [0, 1) and [a(1)(x), a(2)(x),...] be the continued fraction expansion of x. For any n >= 1, write S-n(x) = Sigma(n)(k=1) a(k)(x). Khintchine (1935 Compos. Math. 1 361-82) proved that S-n(x)/n log n converges in measure to 1/log 2 with respect to L-1, where L-1 denotes the one dimensional Lebesgue measure. Philipp (1988 Monatsh. Math. 105 195-206) showed that there is not a reasonable normalizing sequence such that a strong law of large numbers is satisfied. In this paper, we show that for any alpha >= 0, the setE(alpha) = {x is an element of [0, 1): lim(n -> 8) S-n(x)/n log n = alpha}is of Hausdorff dimension 1. Furthermore, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the set consisting of reals whose sums of partial quotients grow at a given polynomial rate is 1.

Abstract:In this paper we establish properties of independence for the continued fraction expansions of two algebraic numbers. Roughly speaking, if the continued fraction expansions of two irrational algebraic numbers have the same long sub-word, then the two continued fraction expansions have the same tails. If the two expansions have mirror symmetry long sub-words, then both the two algebraic numbers are quadratic. Applying the above results, we prove a theorem analogous to the Roth's theorem about approximation by algebraic numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the relative growth rate of degrees of partial quotients with respect to convergents in continued fractions over the field of Laurent series. For any r > 0, the Hausdorff dimensions of the sets {x : deg A(n+1)(x) >= r . degQ(n)(x) for infinitely many n} and {x : degA(n+1)(x) >= r . degQ(n)(x) for all n >= 1} are determined, where A(n)(x), n >= 1, denote the partial quotients and Q(n)(x), n >= 1, denote the denominators of the convergents.

Abstract:This paper explores the properties of multipliers associated with discrete analogues of fractional integrals, revealing intriguing connections with Dirichlet characters, Euler's identity, and Dedekind zeta functions of quadratic imaginary fields. Employing Fourier transform techniques, the Hardy–Littlewood circle method, and a discrete analogue of the Stein–Weiss inequality on product space through implication methods, we establish lp→lq bounds for these operators. Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between number theory and harmonic analysis in discrete domains, offering insights into the convergence behavior of these operators.

Fractional Finite Sums Theory: a motivation and some new results

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study of the fractional finite sums theory. We present the classes of functions for which it is possible to characterize the constant related to the derivative of fractional sums (denominated by essence of a function). Examples of the essences of functions are presented, including the Bernoulli numbers, which are obtained as essences of the functions $f(x)=x^a$, $a \in \mathbb{N}^*$. Based on the new results, we can expand the comprehension of the Euler-Maclaurin summation formula for a real number instead of only considering natural numbers. Moreover, we utilize the concept of the essence of a function to propose a new regularization method for divergent series.
