Three New Species of Grasshoppers(Orthoptera: Acridoidea) from Hunan, China

Abstract:This paper reports three new species of grasshoppers: Caryanda jiuyishana sp. nov. and Fruhstorferiola xuefengshana sp. nov. belonging to Catantopidae, and Chorthippus daweishanensis sp. nov. belonging to Arcypteridae. Type speciments are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, College of Life Science, Shaanxi Normal University. 1. Caryanda jiuyishana, sp. nov. (Figs. 1～6) This new species is similar to Caryanda tridentata Fu et Zheng, but differs from the latter in: 1) furrow on frontal ridge above median ocellus clear only; 2) width of vertex before eyes 2 times one of frontal ridge between two antennaes; 3) outer apical spine of hind tibia smaller and closer to outer lower spur; 4) median hind tibia with black stripe; 5) male body clearly smaller. this new species is also similar to Caryanda nigrolineata Liang, but differs from the latter in; 1) length of interspace of mesosternal lobes 1.4 times larger its minimum width; 2) elytra narrower, and its length 3.5 times longer than the width; 3) outer apical spine of hind tibia smaller and closer to outer lower spur; 4) median hind tibia with black stripe. Length of body: ♂16 mm～16.5 mm; Length of pronotum ♂3.5 mm; Length of elytra: ♂3 mm; Length of hind femur: ♂12 mm. Holotype ♂, Yao Autonomous County of Jianghua (Huangshi Town) (25°12′N,111°34′E), 900m, Hunan, 15-Ⅸ-1998, collected by Li Zhijun. Paratype 1♂, same as holotype. 2. Fruhstorferiola xuefengshana, sp. nov. (Figs. 7～11) This new species is similar to Fruhstorferiola omei (Rehn et Rehn), but differs from the latter in: 1) length of prozona of pronotum 1.3(♀)～1.5(♂) times longer than metazona; 2) subgenital plate of male squarish, its posterior margin with a round angled projection; 3) median tooth of posterior margin of subgenital plate of female 1.5 times longer than lateral teeth; 4) length of cercus of male 1.8 times its width of apex; 5) shape of epiphallus different. This new species is also similar to Fruhstorferiola viridifemorata (Caud), but differs from the latter in: 1) apex of cercus of male 2.8 times wider than the narrowest width of waist; 2) subgenital plate of male squarish, its posterior magin with a round angled projection; 3) shape of epiphallus different. Length of body: ♂ 23 mm, ♀ 32 mm; Length of pronotum: ♂ 5 mm, ♀ 6.8 mm; Length of elytra: ♂ 16.5 mm, ♀ 22 mm; Length of hind femur: ♂ 13 mm, ♀ 17 mm. Holotype ♂,Yuanling County (Chenglongje Town) (28°29′N, 110°22′E), 500 m, Hunan, 03-Ⅷ-1998, collected by Zhang Dahua. Paratypes 1♂ 1♀, same as holotype. 3. Chorthippus daweishanensis, sp. nov. (Figs. 12～15) This new species is similar to Chorthippus hunanensis Yin et Wei, but differs from the latter in: 1) length of prozona of pronotum equal to metazona, anterior and median sulcus disappear (male) or not clear (female) from dorsal view; 2) maximum width of costal area of elytra 2 times wider than one of subcostal area; 3) hind femur with 234 stridulatory pegs, line of stridulatory pegs 9.5 mm long; 4) the length of tympanal organ 3 times its width; 5) inner and upper side of hind femur, hind tibia and subgenital plate of male yellowish brown. This new species is also similar to Chorthippus multipegus Yin et Wei, but differs from the latter in: 1) vertex acute angled; 2) maximum width between lateral keels of metazona 2 times wider than minimum one of prozona; 3) maximum width of median area of elytra wider than maximum one of cubital area; 4) the costal area of elytra 2 times wider than the subcostal area; 5) inner and upper side of hind femur and hind tibia, subge nital plate of male yellowish brown. Length of body: ♂ 23 mm, ♀28.5 mm; Length of pronotum: ♂4.6 mm, ♀5.9 mm; Length of elytra: ♂20.5 mm, ♀ 21.5 mm; Length of hind femur: ♂15.5 mm, ♀18.5 mm. Holotype ♂, Liuyang County (the Dawei Mountains, Jilong top) (28°26′N, 114°12′E), 970m, Hunan, 17-Ⅷ-1998, collected by Sun Yibing. Paratype 1♀, same as holotype.
