Abstract:Water surface emissivity is a vital parameter in thermal remote sensing, since knowledge of it is required to estimate surface temperature accurately. It is also important in meteorological and climatological analysis. In this study, we show results obtained for water surface emissivity spectra using the absolute emissivity (AE) method and the temperature and emissivity separation (TES) algorithm in laboratory measurements with a multiband thermal radiometer, and we compare the results with the water surface theoretical model. The results show that for the AE method there is deviation of less than 1% for all bands However, the TES algorithm produces poorer results, with deviations reaching almost 3%, due to the water having low emissivity spectral contrast; this corresponds to an error in surface temperature measurement of between 1.7 K and 2K. By revising the TES algorithm (TSE*), however, it is possible to achieve deviations of less than 1%. Thus, both the AE method and the revised TES (TES*) algorithm demonstrate that they can be applied to retrieve accurate emissivity spectra for water surfaces in laboratory measurements. They can also provide a reference for other emissivity measurement methods, as well as giving some guidance for further thermal emission and temperature algorithm research.
