Abstract:The spawning grounds of Schizothoracinae fish, represented by H. microcephalus Herzenstein 1891, are under anthropogenic and climate change threats on the Tibetan Plateau, yet most of their locations and substrate requirements remain poorly studied. From 2019 through 2024, we conducted in situ observations of high-altitude Yangtze River headwaters to elucidate critical aspects of these spawning sites. We identified potential spawning behaviour and nest structure, detected reproductive activity, and reported egg burial for the first time, confirming the presence of spawning sites at 4806 m asl in the nearshore area of a braided river. Spawning occurred in mid-June prior to flooding in areas with extreme daily water temperature fluctuations. The spawning nest had a depth of 8–10 cm and a diameter of 20 ± 1 cm, containing 32 ± 15 fertilized eggs per nest. The absolute fecundity of female H. microcephalus was 10,537 ± 1306 eggs. Both mature female and male H. microcephalus developed nuptial tubercles. The GSI of females (8.2% ± 2.0%) was significantly greater than that of males (4.0% ± 1.2%). The females had almost twice the total length (36.7 ± 6.5 cm) and four times the body weight (396.5 ± 4.8 g) of the males (19.7 ± 1.8 cm and 98.8 ± 94.4 g, respectively), indicating marked sexual dimorphism. The gravel in the spawning nests had a median diameter of 18.4 mm and a maximum diameter of 4–5 cm, and the maximum length was approximately one tenth of the mean female total length. The high fertilization and hatching rates reached 98% and 82%, respectively, indicating good egg quality. Chorion softening but not hardening after fertilization was observed for the first time under natural conditions. The identification of spawning site characteristics and the discovery of egg burial are crucial for the habitat conservation of representative Schizothoracinae fish.
