Abstract:New donor-pi-acceptor organic dyes K-1 and K-2 containing thieno[2,3-a]carbazole as an electron donor were designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Photophysical and electrochemical properties of K-dyes were investigated. DSCs based on K-dyes showed a high conversion efficiency of 6.6-6.7% with a J(sc) of 12.40-12.49 mA cm(-2) and a V-oc of 0.70-0.71 V. The molecular geometry calculation indicated that the existence of thienocarbazole donor in K-dyes enhanced the molecular planarity compared to the carbazole analogue dye MK-3. As a result, DSCs based on K-dyes showed high IPCEs, perhaps due to efficient intramolecular charge transfer and electron injection from excited dye to TiO2 conduction band. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Thiadiazolo[3,4-c]pyridine Acceptor Based Blue Sensitizers for High Efficiency Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Two new [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-c]pyridine-containing D-A-π–A organic dyes (PT-1 and PT-2) have been designed and synthesized for utilization in dye-sensitized solar cells. PT-2 sensitizer, which was synthesized by incorporating the 4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b′]dithiophene moiety as an additional π-bridge into the organic sensitizer PT-1, not only brings about significant changes in the absorption spectrum but also suppresses the charge recombination rate as compared to PT-1. Moreover, PT-2 exhibits an aesthetic blue color covering a broad spectral range into the NIR region. The incident-photon to electron-conversion efficiency of PT-2 shows an onset approaching 850 nm with power conversion efficiency of 6.7% fabricated when utilizing an iodide-based redox electrolyte. These results demonstrate that these [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-c]pyridine-based sensitizers are quite promising candidates to use for lowering the HOMO–LUMO gap and shifting the spectral response toward the NIR.
Benzo[a]carbazole-Based Donor-π-Acceptor Type Organic Dyes for Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Abstract:A novel class of metal-free organic dyes based on benzo[a]carbazole have been designed, synthesized, and used in dye-sensitized solar cells for the first time. These types of dyes consisted of a cyanoacrylic acid moiety as the electron acceptor/anchoring group and different electron-rich spacers such as thiophene (JY21), furan (JY22), and oligothiophene (JY23) as the π-linkers. The photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties, as well as theoretical calculations of these dyes were investigated. The photovoltaic performances of these dyes were found to be highly relevant to the π-conjugated linkers. In particular, dye JY23 exhibited a broad IPCE response with a photocurrent signal up to about 740 nm covering the most region of the UV-visible light. A DSSC based on JY23 showed the best photovoltaic performance with a Jsc of 14.8 mA cm(-2), a Voc of 744 mV, and a FF of 0.68, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 7.54% under standard AM 1.5 G irradiation.

Abstract:Six new organic dyes, TBS1–TBS6, have been synthesized and characterized by optical, electrochemical, and theoretical studies. Among these dyes, DSSCs based on a dye containing N-hexylcarbazole and furan moieties (TBS4) showed the best performance, with light-to-electricity conversion efficiency up to 5.91% under AM 1.5 solar simulator, much higher than the reference dye TPS (4.24%). The high Voc contributed to the good performance for TBS4, which may be ascribed to the combined effects of twisted structure and hexyl chain. Additionally, for TBS4 based DSSCs, under optimized conditions, the light-to-electricity conversion efficiency was enhanced up to 7.09%. The results suggest that dibenzo heterocycles containing dyes are promising candidates for application in DSSCs.
Novel pyridoquinazolindone-containing triphenylamine dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Four novel "A-D-π-A" pyridoquinazolinone-containing triphenylamine dyes were synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs), which consist of triphenylamine as the electron donor, thiophene or CC bond as π-bridge, cyanoacrylic acid as the electron acceptor and pyridoquinazolinone as the auxiliary acceptor. Their photophysical, electrochemical properties and photovoltaic performance were investigated. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) was performed for theoretical calculations. The results show that the incorporation of additional pyridoquinazolinone unit enables dyes with larger charge recombination resistance than the dyes with single pyridoquinazolinone unit, which benefits the increase of Voc . Besides, the introduction of thiophene bridge can broaden and red-shift the absorption region, which endows the dyes with better light-harvesting ability and subsequently brings about superior IPCE and Jsc . Therefore, dye with double pyridoquinazolinone units and thiophene bridge exhibits the best photoelectric conversion efficiency 5.19 % ( Jsc = 11.71 mAcm −2 , Voc = 0.67 V, ff = 0.70).

Abstract:A new series of donor–π–acceptor–based dyes were proposed depending on 9-ethyl-9H-carbazole as a donor group and ortho-fluorine-substituted phenyl as the acceptor group that was linked via different groups as π–bridge. The density functional theory (DFT) together with time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) method was applied to conduct and analyze how the π–bridge type would impact the dye-sensitized solar cell performance. The calculations include important properties that have a major role in increasing the efficiency of the proposed organic dyes which contain electronic, geometric, density of state, molecular electrostatic potential, photovoltaic, open–circuit photo-voltage, electrochemical, injection driving force, dipole moment, and optical properties. Furthermore, one of the dyes (D6) that was tested for the analysis of the absorption process of which on the (TiO2)15 cluster models has reported the electron injection from the dye to TiO2 surface. The proposed D–π–A structure (D1–D6) demonstrated a marked improvement in properties of the dyes to be utilized for organic solar cells such as spontaneous electron injection, charge distribution, open–circuit voltage, redox, driving force, reasonable conversion, harvesting, strong sensitizing properties during the photo-excitation process, and absorbance spectra. Consequently, all the proposed D–π–A dyes were seen to have good efficiency and therefore promising dye for organic solar cells.

Abstract:Four novel carbazole organic dyes containing either a furan or a thiophene unit as the conjugated bridge have been designed, synthesized and characterized for nanocrystalline TiO2 dye-sensitized solar cells. The modified carbazole containing linear or branched alkyl side chain acts as an electron donor, triphenylamine acts as an electron-donating group and cyanoarylic acid acts as an electron acceptor and anchoring unit. The absorption spectra, electrochemical, photovoltaic and sensitizing properties of the new dyes were fully characterized. Among these four dyes, the dye incorporating an octyl-substituted carbazole and disubstituted furan shows the best photovoltaic performance: a maximum monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of 92.4%, a short-circuit photocurrent density of 13.26 mA cm−2, an open-circuit photovoltage of 724 mV, and a fill factor of 0.66, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 6.68% under standard global AM 1.5 solar light condition. The results indicate that the introduction of longer alkyl chain into the carbazole moiety will retard recombination and the introduction of furan as the conjugate bridge will increase the photocurrent response. For comparison, the ruthenium dye, designated as N719, sensitized TiO2 solar cell showed an efficiency of 6.98% under the same experiment conditions.

Abstract:Three novel carbazole-based A-π-D-π-A-featured dyes (CSG1–CSG3) have been designed, synthesized for applications in dye-sensitized solar cells and fully characterized with NMR, MS, IR, UV–vis and electrochemical measurements. These dyes share the same donor (N-hexylcarbazole) and acceptor/anchoring group (cyanoacrylic acid), but differs in conjugated linkers incorporated, such as benzene, furan or thiophene, to configure the novel A-π-D-π-A framework for effective electron flow. The power conversion efficiencies were observed to be sensitive to the π-bridging linker moiety. The photovoltaic experiments showed that dye with a benzene linker exhibited a higher open-circuit voltage (0.699V) compared to thiophene and furan linker. Among all dyes, CSG2 containing a thiophene linker exhibited the maximum overall conversion efficiency of 3.8% (JSC=8.90mAcm−2, VOC=584mV, FF=0.74) under standard global AM 1.5 G solar condition. Under similar fabrication conditions, champion dye N719 exhibited the maximum overall conversion efficiency of 6.4% (JSC=14.74mAcm−2, VOC=606mV, FF=0.716).

Abstract:Five bithiazole-based organic dyes D-1-D-5 containing different electron donor moieties (thiophene, fluorene, carbazole, and triarylamine) in the molecular frameworks were synthesized, characterized and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The effects of electron-donating moieties of the organic dyes on their photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties have been investigated in detail. These dyes exhibit strong charge transfer absorption bands in the visible region. Their redox potential levels were estimated by cyclic voltammetry and found to match well with the charge flow in DSSCs. The combination of broad absorption bands with fairly high extinction coefficients and appropriate redox properties makes these bithiazole-based molecules promising dyes for DSSCs. For solar cell device based on D-4, the maximal monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) can reach up to 68.5%, with a short-circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)) of 9.61 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit photovoltage (V-oc) of 0.70 V and a fill factor (FF) of 0.70, which results in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.65% under illumination of an AM 1.5 solar cell simulator. Abstract:In this work, new D-π-A dyes bearing thieno[3,2- b ]indole, 7-( tert -butyl)thieno[3,2- b ]indole or benzo[ g ]thieno[3,2- b ]indole as an electron-donating part, 2,2′-bithiophene unit as π-linker and 2-cyanoacrylic acid as an electron acceptor-anchoring part have been readily synthesized and used for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In addition, thermal stability, optical and electrochemical properties of these dyes were investigated. The DSSCs based on dyes IS-BTh exhibited values of PCE in the range of 3.43–4.41 % under AM 1.5 G irradiation. The highest PCE value of 4.41 % ( J sc = 11.61 mA cm −2 , V oc = 0.64 V, FF = 0.59) was achieved for DSSC based on dye IS-BTh-1 , bearing thieno[3,2- b ]indole as an electron-donating part. The temperature dependencies of the photovoltaic parameters for DSSC based on dye IS-BTh-1 were investigated.

Abstract:Three new organic dyes were synthesized and characterized for applications in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In these dyes, diarylmethylene-bridged triphenylamine is the donor, and different acceptors and vinyl-thiophene are designed to get TBA-1, TBA-2 and TBA-3. Their photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties were investigated, and the effects of the acceptor structures as well as the linkage on these properties were evaluated. Results demonstrated that the vinylthiophene linkage between the donor and the acceptor is favorable for improving light harvesting ability of TBA-2. In addition, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments suggest larger R-rec and longer electron lifetime of TBA-2. Therefore, it outperforms the other dyes, exhibiting the highest power conversion efficiency of 3.87%, with J(sc) of 8.25 mA.cm(-2) and V-oc of 666 mV. Unfortunately, the TBA-3 with three acceptor groups only shows efficiency of 3.52%, indicating that the design of increasing acceptor groups plays little role on enhancing the solar cell efficiency.

Abstract:A series of organic D-π-A sensitizers composed of different triarylamine donors in conjugation with the thienothiophene unit and cyanoacrylic acid as an acceptor has been synthesized at a moderate yield. Through tuning the number of methoxy substituents on the triphenylamine donor, we have gradually red-shifted the absorption of sensitizers to enhance device efficiencies. Further molecular engineering by the substitution of two hexyloxy chains in place of the methoxy groups allows fabricating a solvent-free dye-sensitized solar cell with a power conversion efficiency of 7.05% measured under the air mass 1.5 global sunlight. Time- and frequency-domain photoelectrical techniques have been employed to scrutinize the aliphatic chain effects with a close inspection on effective electron lifetime, diffusion coefficient, and diffusion length.

Abstract:A novel D-A-π-A type organic dye (YCD01) incorporating a diketopyrrolopyrrole unit with a branched alkyl chain was synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells. YCD01 showed a high conversion efficiency of 7.43% (AM 1.5, 100 mW cm(-2)) with a J(sc) of 13.40 mA cm(-2), a V(oc) of 0.76 V, a FF of 0.73 and an excellent stability.

Abstract:Four new organic dyes, coded as CSORG6, CSORG7, CSORG8 and CSORG9, comprising electron rich thiophene derivatives as antennas and cyanoacrylic acid as acceptor, bridged by phenothiazine or phenoxazine were designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells applications. They were fully characterized with their photophysical, electrochemical properties, density functional theory (DFT), time dependent density DFT (TDDFT) and the light-harvesting properties of the new sensitizers were evaluated with nanocrystalline TiO2-based devices. Among the four diheteroanthracene based dyes, phenoxazine (CSORG7 and CSORG9) based devices afforded the best photovoltaic performance (eta) of 6% under standard AM 1.5G solar irradiation, whereas, N719 showed (eta) 6.4% under the similar fabrication and evolution conditions. Abstract:Developing organic dyes with di-/multi-anchors has aroused increasing attention in recent years due to these dyes had many advantages in comparison with the analogues of single acceptor. Herein, four (D–π–A)-L2-(A–π–D–π–A)2 dyes (TQ1−2, OQ1−2) along with a reference D−(π–A)2 dye (TD), comprising phenothiazine/phenoxazine as a donor, thiophene as a π space, cyanoacetic acid as an acceptor and saturated n-hexyl/n-dodecyl as a flexible linker have been prepared and characterized. The correlative between the variation of structure and the optical, electrochemical properties in addition to photovoltaic performances of the dyes have been explored. Besides, the ultraviolet–visible spectra in solution and on the TiO2 film, cyclic voltammetry, photocurrent-voltage scan, incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic of the presented dyes have been investigated. Compared with the reference dye TD, TQ1−2 and OQ1−2 exhibit higher molar extinction coefficient, broader and stronger incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency response spectrum, and higher density of light-absorbing units adsorbed on the TiO2 surface. Among the cells based on the pristine dyes, the relatively high photocurrent of OQ1-2 by comparison with the counterparts of TQ1−2 is attributed to the incorporation of phenoxazine donor into the (A–π–D–π–A)2 units. An increase open-circuit voltage of TQ2 and OQ2 compared to TQ1 and OQ1 is ascribed to the higher charge recombination resistance and the longer electron lifetime in their cells. Consequently, a maximum power conversion efficiency of 6.77% is attained by the TQ2-based cells with iodide/triiodide electrolyte under the illumination of 100 mW cm−2.

Abstract:In order to increase the electron-donating ability of the donor part of the organic dye, two phenothiazine groups, as additional electron donors, were introduced into a triphenylamine unit to form a starburst donor–donor (2D) structure in this paper. Three new organic dyes (WD-6, WD-7 and WD-8) containing this starburst 2D structure and a 2-cyanoacetic acid acceptor linked by various conjugated linkers (benzene, thiophene, and furan) have been designed, synthesized and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The introduction of a phenothiazine group with a butterfly conformation in the triphenylamine donor parts has a good influence on preventing the molecular π–π aggregation due to the starburst 2D structure of the organic dye. The conjugated linker effects on the photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of these organic dyes were investigated in detail. The DSSCs made with these organic dyes displayed remarkable overall conversion efficiencies, ranging from 4.90–6.79% under an AM 1.5 solar condition (100 mW cm−2). The best performance was found for organic dye WD-8, in which a furan group was the conjugated linker. It displayed a short-circuit current (Jsc) of 14.43 mA cm−2, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 682 mV, and a fill factor (ff) of 0.69, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 6.79%. The different photovoltaic behaviors of the solar cells based on these organic dyes were further elucidated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
Novel Thiazolo[5,4-D]thiazole-based Organic Dyes for Quasi-Solid-state Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Abstract:A series of novel metal-free organic dyes containing the thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole moiety were designed and synthesized for quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Different alkoxy chains were introduced into the electron donor part of the dye molecules for comparison. The optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for all sensitizers were systematically investigated. It was found that the sensitizers with the different alkoxy groups have similar photophysical and electrochemical properties, such as absorbance and energy levels, owing to their close chemical structures. However, the quasi-solid-state DSSCs based on the resulting sensitizers exhibit different performance parameters. The quasi-solid-state DSSC based on sensitizer FNE74 with two octyloxy chains possessed the highest solar energy conversion efficiency of 5.10 % under standard AM 1.5G sunlight illumination without the use of coadsorbant agents.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are currently under intense academic and industrial investigations, because of their environmentally-friendly, efficient, and low-cost features. The photosensitizer plays a key role in determining DSSCs' performance. The 4,4'-di(2-thienyl)triphenylamine moiety, included in dye TTC102, has been demonstrated before as a novel and efficient electron donor fragment. In this paper, the oversimple π-conjugated bridge of TTC102 was replaced by a 9-ethyl-3,6-di(2-thiophenyl)carbazole moiety. Two new D-D-π-A sensitizers, named TTC104 and TTC105, were synthesized and fully characterized. After anchoring on TiO(2) nanoparticle film, the absorption band of TTC104 is broader by 30 nm than that of TTC102. Under AM 1.5G irradiation, the energy conversion efficiency (η) of a DSSC based on TTC104 reaches 6.36%, which is 21.6% higher than that of TTC102 (5.24%). The results above demonstrate that the photovoltaic performance can be improved after introducing the 9-ethyl-3,6-di(2-thiophenyl)carbazole moiety to TTC102 when employed in DSSCs. Dye TTC105, containing a pyridyl group as the electron acceptor, showed only 1.88% conversion efficiency (η) when used in DSSCs. The huge different performances of TTC104 and TTC105 are proved to be partly due to the smaller dye loading amount, higher dark current and charge recombination rate of TTC105.
