Abstract:We have synthesized a high molar extinction coefficient organic sensitizer with a binary π-conjugated spacer exhibiting an almost panchromatic photocurrent response.In conjunction with a volatile acetonitrile electrolyte and a solvent-free ionic liquid electrolyte,unprecedented high efficiencies of 9.8% and 8.1% measured under AM1.5G full sunlight have been reached for organic dye-sensitized solar cells.For the first time,we have demonstrated a stable,>8% efficiency,solvent-free dye-sensitized solar cell based on metal-free organic sensitizers.This achievement will considerably encourage further molecular and energy-level engineering of low-cost metal-free organic dyes,boosting the practical application of dye-sensitized solar cells.
Rational Design of ZL003-based Organic Dyes for Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Influence of Alkynyl Group and Π-Spacers on Photovoltaic Performance

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have displayed huge potential in inexpensive, efficient, and clean solar energy-technology. To achieve highly efficient DSSCs, a series of D -n-A organic dyes were designed and their optoelectrical properties were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Compared with ZL003, ZS1 designed by introducing the triple bond between donor and n bridge, has higher conjugation, narrower HOMO-LUMO bandgap, and extended ab-sorption spectra. Then five new organic dyes were designed by substituting benzothiadiazole part of ZS1 with five electron-deficient heterocycles. The designed dyes have more conjugated structure, which leads to stronger light harvesting ability with the absorption spectra expanding to the near infrared region, the maximum absorption wavelength red shifting 78 nm similar to 448 nm and light harvesting efficiency (LHE) curve broadening obviously. The intermolecular electron transfer (IET) rate of the design dye is much faster than that of ZL003, over 85.3% of electrons in the design dye have been injected into TiO2 within 200 fs. Especially, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of BBTD, BTTD and BZOD is more than 25.7%, mainly re-flected in the obvious jump of the theoretical short current density (Jpred . sc ) by more than 68%. Therefore, the design dyes have a good application prospect. We believe that this work could provide theoretical guidance for the design of potential organic sensitizers in highly efficient DSSCs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In view of the limited ruthenium resource, metal-free organic dyes may play a prominent role in the coming large-scale application of cost-effective dye-sensitized solar cells, if their efficiency and stability can be considerably improved. In this paper we utilized a binay pi-conjugated spacer of ethylenedioxythiophene and dithienosilole to construct a high molar absorption coefficient push-pull dye, characteristic of an intramolecular charge-transfer band peaking at 584 nm measured in chloroform. In comparison with the standard ruthenium sensitizer Z907, this metal-free chromophore C219 endowed a nanocrystalline titania Film with all evident light-harvesting enhancement. leading to an unprecedented 10 0- 10 3% efficiency at the AM 1 5G conditions for dye-sensitized solar cells with nonruthenium dyestuffs, although a highly volatile electrolyte was used. Transient absorption measurements have revealed that even if the kinetics of back-electron transfer and dye regeneration am considerably different for Z907 and C219, the branching ratios of these two charge-transfer channels are over 35 for both dyes, ensuring a high yield of net charge separation at the titania/dye/electrolyte interface. A solvent-free ionic liquid cell with C219 as the sensitizer exhibited an impressive efficiency or 8 9% under a low light intensity of 14.39 mW cm(-2), making it very favorable for the indoor application of flexible dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:Cost-effective organic sensitizers will play a pivotal role in the future large-scale production and application of dye-sensitized solar cells. Here we report two new organic D-pi-A dyes featuring electron-rich 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene- and 2,2'-bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-conjugated linkers, showing a remarkable red-shifting of photocurrent action spectra compared with their thiophene and bithiophene counterparts. On the basis of the 3-f{5'-[N,N-bis(9,9-dimethylfluorene-2-yl)phenyl]-2,2'-bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-5-yl}2-cyanoacrylic acid dye, we have set a new efficiency record of 7.6% for solvent-free dye-sensitized solar cells based on metal-free organic sensitizers. Importantly, the cell exhibits an excellent stability, keeping over 92% of its initial efficiency after 1000 h accelerated tests under full sunlight soaking at 60 degrees C. This achievement will considerably encourage further design and exploration of metal-free organic dyes for higher performance dye-sensitized solar cells. We have also scrutinized the physical origins of the relatively low photocurrent and photovoltage obtained with an ionic liquid electrolyte compared to a volatile acetonitrile-based electrolyte through transient and modulated photoelectrical measurements.

Abstract:Six new organic dyes, TBS1–TBS6, have been synthesized and characterized by optical, electrochemical, and theoretical studies. Among these dyes, DSSCs based on a dye containing N-hexylcarbazole and furan moieties (TBS4) showed the best performance, with light-to-electricity conversion efficiency up to 5.91% under AM 1.5 solar simulator, much higher than the reference dye TPS (4.24%). The high Voc contributed to the good performance for TBS4, which may be ascribed to the combined effects of twisted structure and hexyl chain. Additionally, for TBS4 based DSSCs, under optimized conditions, the light-to-electricity conversion efficiency was enhanced up to 7.09%. The results suggest that dibenzo heterocycles containing dyes are promising candidates for application in DSSCs.

Abstract:We have developed dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells (DSSCs) based on organic-dye photosensitizers. DSSCs based on the organic dyes gave good performance of incident-photon-to-current conversion efficiencies in the range of 400 to 800 nm. Solar energy-to-electricity conversion efficiencies of up to 7.6% were obtained with DSSCs based on coumarin dyes (NKX-2677 and NKX-2883) under AM 1.5 G irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)). Our results strongly suggest that organic-dye photosensitizers can be successfully designed for use in DSSCs and demonstrate the promising performance of DSSCs based on organic dyes.

Abstract:Maintaining both a high external quantum efficiency and a large open-circuit photovoltage of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is a crucial challenge in the process of developing narrow-energy-gap dyes for the capture of infrared solar photons. Herein, we report two donor-acceptor organic dyes, C294 and C295, with a polycyclic heteroaromatic unit, 6,11-dihydrothieno[3',2':8,9]chryseno[10,11,12,1-bcdefg]carbazole (TCC), as the central module of the electron donor, and ethylbenzothiadiazole-benzioc acid as the electron acceptor. The interfacial charge recombination was successfully mitigated by introducing an additional branched aliphatic chain in C295. Furthermore, the O⋅⋅⋅S nonbonding interaction between the oxygen atom of the alkoxy group and the sulfur atom of the thiophene in C295 controlled the conformation of C295, resulting in a narrow energy-gap. Time-resolved spectroscopic measurements on C294 and the model dye C272 indicated that the elevation of the HOMO energy level decreased the kinetics and yield of hole injection owing to a reduction in the driving force and that the shortened excited-state lifetime caused by the narrowing of the energy gap was unfavorable for electron injection. By fine tuning the composition of the electrolyte, C294 and C295 eventually achieved high power conversion efficiencies of 11.5 % and 12.4 %, respectively, under full sunlight of air mass 1.5 global conditions.

Abstract:A novel organic cyanine dye containing triphenylamine–benzothiadiazole dyad has been synthesized and applied successfully to sensitization of nanocrystalline TiO2-based solar cell. Their absorption spectra, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties were studied. Upon adsorption on a TiO2 electrode, the absorption spectra of the cyanine dye are all broadened at both the red and blue spectral ends relative to its respective spectra in acetonitrile and ethanol mixture solution. An overall conversion efficiency of 7.62% (Jsc=22.10mAcm−2, Voc=0.54V, ff=0.48) is achieved under irradiation with 75mWcm−2 white light from a Xe lamp.
Phenothiazine-Triphenylamine Based Organic Dyes Containing Various Conjugated Linkers for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:In order to increase the electron-donating ability of the donor part of the organic dye, two phenothiazine groups, as additional electron donors, were introduced into a triphenylamine unit to form a starburst donor–donor (2D) structure in this paper. Three new organic dyes (WD-6, WD-7 and WD-8) containing this starburst 2D structure and a 2-cyanoacetic acid acceptor linked by various conjugated linkers (benzene, thiophene, and furan) have been designed, synthesized and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The introduction of a phenothiazine group with a butterfly conformation in the triphenylamine donor parts has a good influence on preventing the molecular π–π aggregation due to the starburst 2D structure of the organic dye. The conjugated linker effects on the photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of these organic dyes were investigated in detail. The DSSCs made with these organic dyes displayed remarkable overall conversion efficiencies, ranging from 4.90–6.79% under an AM 1.5 solar condition (100 mW cm−2). The best performance was found for organic dye WD-8, in which a furan group was the conjugated linker. It displayed a short-circuit current (Jsc) of 14.43 mA cm−2, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 682 mV, and a fill factor (ff) of 0.69, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 6.79%. The different photovoltaic behaviors of the solar cells based on these organic dyes were further elucidated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) for outdoor applications must show both high efficiency and long-term stability. Here we introduce a co-sensitized, ionic liquid electrolyte-based DSC meeting these requirements. A key feature of our embodiment is the concerted action of two judiciously designed organic dyes, whose co-adsorption at the surface of a mesoscopic TiO(2 )scaffold results in the formation of a compact and highly robust self-assembled monolayer, harvesting sunlight across the whole visible region and converting the photons into charges with near-unity quantum efficiency. Apart from producing a high photocurrent, the dense dye layer blocks the back electron transfer from TiO2 to the redox electrolyte, increasing the photovoltage. This allows for the first time to attain a solar to electric power-conversion efficiency of 10% with an ionic liquid-based DSC Remarkably, the co-sensitized cell is stable under both full-sunlight soaking at 60 degrees C and heat stress at 85 degrees C for 1,000 hr.

Abstract:Overcoming the excited-state quenching and interfacial charge recombination is of far-reaching significance for achieving dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with high efficiency and durability. Cografting a wide-energy-gap adsorbent with a low-energy-gap photosensitizer on mesoporous titania film is an important tactic to address these issues and simultaneously increases the transparency of DSSC to a certain degree, which is appealing for see-through and colorful building-integrated photovoltaics. We herein report a powerful coadsorbent Y1, which is grafted along with the middle-energy-gap organic dye C268 on titania film for see-through DSSCs with a recorded efficiency of 11% under the AM1.5G conditions. The cografting-induced increase in efficiency benefits from the improved yields of electron injection and hole injection, as well as the slower interfacial charge recombination kinetics. More importantly, the cell is endowed with an excellent efficiency retention rate of 90% after 1000 h of full sunlight soaking at 60 degrees C.
Efficient and Stable Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Based on Phenothiazine Sensitizers with Thiophene Units

Abstract:Three new phenothiazine organic dyes containing thiophene, 3-(5-(3-(4-(bis(4-methoxy phenyl)amino)phenyl)-10-octyl-10H-phenothiazin-7-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2-cyanoacrylic acid (P1), 3-(5-(3-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-10-octyl-10H-phenothiazin-7-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2-cyanoacrylic acid (P2) and 2-cyano-3-(5-(10-octyl-3-(4-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)phenyl)-10H-phenothiazin-7-yl)thiophen-2-yl) acrylic acid (P3) were designed and synthesized as sensitizers for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). For these dyes, the phenothiazine derivative moiety and the cyanoacetic acid take the roles of electron donor and electron acceptor, respectively. The absorption spectra, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of P1–P3 and the cell long-term stability were extensively investigated. It was found that HOMO and LUMO energy level tuning can be conveniently accomplished by alternating the donor moiety. The DSSCs based on dye P2 showed the best photovoltaic performance: a maximum monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 84.9%, a short-circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) of 10.84 mA cm−2, an open-circuit photovoltage (Voc) of 592 mV, and a fill factor (ff) of 0.69, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 4.41% under standard global AM 1.5 solar light conditions. These results demonstrated that the DSSCs based on phenothiazine dyes could achieve both high performance and good stability.

Abstract:Three near infrared (NIR) metal-free organic sensitizers (FNE32, FNE34, FNE36) based on the thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine derivative have been designed and synthesized for application in quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These organic dyes demonstrate maximum absorption bands at 596-625 nm due to the presence of the thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine derivative, which facilitates the intramolecular electron transfer from the donor to the acceptor. Quasi-solid-state DSSCs based on FNE34 display efficient photoelectric conversion over the whole visible range extending into the NIR region up to 900 nm with maximum incident monochromatic photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 77%, yielding a short-circuit photocurrent density of 16.24 mA cm(-2) and a power conversion efficiency of 5.30%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest efficiency for quasi-solid-state DSSCs based on an organic NIR dye. When exposed to one-sun illumination for 1000 h, the quasi-solid-state DSSC based on FNE34 exhibits good long-term stability with almost constant power conversion efficiency.

Abstract:A series of simple phenothiazine-based dyes have been synthesized, in which a cyanoacrylate acceptor directly attached to the C(3) position of phenothiazine, and an additional linear electron-rich (4-hexyloxy)phenyl group at C(7) on the opposite side of the acceptor, and an alkyl chain with different length at N(10) of the phenothiazine periphery are presented. The dye molecules have a linear shape which is favorable for the formation of a compact dye layer on the TiO2 surface, while their butterfly conformations can sufficiently inhibit molecular aggregation. Moreover, the structural features of (4-hexyloxy)phenyl donor moiety at the C(7) position of phenothiazine extends the pi-conjugation of the chromophore, thus enhancing the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Moreover, the alkyl substituents with different chain length at the N(10) atom of phenothiazine could further optimize the performance through completely shielding the surface of TiO2 from the I-/I3- electrolyte and subsequently reducing the leakage of dark current. Under simulated AM 1.5G irradiation, the PT-C6 based DSSC produces a short-circuit photocurrent of 15.32 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit photovoltage of 0.78 V, a fill factor of 0.69, corresponding to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.18%, which exceeds the reference N719 (7.73%) under identical fabrication conditions. Notably, the designed molecular structure represents the highest photovoltaic conversion efficiency value when compared with other reported phenothiazine-derived dyes.
