Abstract:The application of a layered K0.5MnO2 cathode in potassium-ion batteries is limited by its poor cycling performance when charged above 4.0 V (vs K+/K), and the underlying mechanism for this electrochemical instability is still unclear. Here, it is discovered that ethylene carbonate (EC) will intercalate into the depotassiated K0.5MnO2, causing the exfoliation of the layered compound and the capacity decay under high charge cutoff voltage. When the carbonates are replaced with a nonflammable phosphate, the electrochemical performance of K0.5MnO2 above 4.0 V (vs K+/K) is significantly enhanced with a large reversible capacity (120 mAh g(-1)) and high capacity retention of 84% after 400 cycles. This phosphate-based electrolyte also demonstrates good compatibility with the commercial graphite anode, enabling the encouraging electrochemical performance of the K0.5MnO2 vertical bar graphite fullcell. The present study provides new insights on further exploration of other electrolytes to advance the emerging low-cost and high-performance potassium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide (MnO2) has been recognized as an effective catalyst for the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions in non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries. However, a further improvement in battery performance with the MnO2 catalyst is limited by its low electronic conductivity and catalytic activity, which strongly depend on the morphology and composition. In this work, we develop a carbon and binder-free MnO2-x nanosheets/stainless steel (SS) cathode via a simple and effective electrodeposition-solvothermal route. The created Mn(III) and oxygen vacancy in MnO2-x nanosheets allows an significant increase in the electronic conductivity and catalytic activity. It is experimentally shown that the use of the present nanostructure MnO2-x/SS cathode in a non-aqueous lithium-oxygen battery results in a rechargeable specific capacity of 7300 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 200 mA g(-1), which is 39% higher than that with the MnO2/SS cathode. In addition, the specific capacities at 400 mA g(-1) and 800 mA g(-1) reach 5249 mAh g(-1) and 2813 mAh g(-1), respectively, which are over 30% higher than that with the MnO2/SS cathode. Furthermore, the discharge/charge cycle test shows no degradation for 120 cycles. All the results show that the present nanostructure MnO2-x/SS cathode is a promising candidate for high-performance lithium-oxygen batteries. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Non-aqueous Li-O-2 battery has attracted plenty of interest due to its super theoretical energy density. Nevertheless, it also faces formidable challenges with respect to an unaccepted overpotential during charge process and a low round trip efficiency, which leads to a poor cycle life. Herein, we present a novel binder-free composite cathode comprised of MgCo2O4@3D graphene with a three-dimensional structure, which has never been used in the lithium oxygen batteries, as a cathode applied in the non-aqueous Li-O-2 battery. The MgCo2O4 nanowires as the catalyst is grown on the graphene substrate supported by the nickel foam. The discharge product Li2O2 formed with a flake-like morphology decompose at a low potential ascribed to excellent catalytic activity from MgCo2O4. Finally, we demonstrate a non-aqueous Li-O-2 battery capable of operating over 480 cycles with limiting capacity and rate values at 400 mAhg(-1) and 200 mAg(-1).
A Novel Cr2O3/MnO2-x Electrode for Lithium-Oxygen Batteries with Low Charge Voltage and High Energy Efficiency

Abstract:A high energy efficiency, low charging voltage cathode is of great significance for the development of non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries. Non-stoichiometric manganese dioxide (MnO2-x) and chromium trioxide (Cr2O3) are known to have good catalytic activities for the discharging and charging processes, respectively. In this work, we prepared a cathode based on Cr2O3 decorated MnO2-x nanosheets via a simple anodic electrodeposition-electrostatic adsorption-calcination process. This combined fabrication process allowed the simultaneous introduction of abundant oxygen vacancies and trivalent manganese into the MnO2-x nanosheets, with a uniform load of a small amount of Cr2O3 on the surface of the MnO2-x nanosheets. Therefore, the Cr2O3/MnO2-x electrode exhibited a high catalytic effect for both discharging and charging, while providing high energy efficiency and low charge voltage. Experimental results show that the as-prepared Cr2O3/MnO2-x cathode could provide a specific capacity of 6,779 mA·h·g-1 with a terminal charge voltage of 3.84 V, and energy efficiency of 78%, at a current density of 200 mA·g-1. The Cr2O3/MnO2-x electrode also showed good rate capability and cycle stability. All the results suggest that the as-prepared Cr2O3/MnO2-x nanosheet electrode has great prospects in non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries.

Abstract:A novel binder-free electrode for lithium-oxygen batteries has been prepared by electrodepositing a Co3O4 layer onto a pretreated TiO2 fiber mesh, formed on nickel foam by an electrospinning method. The Co3O4 depositing layer is composed of Co3O4 nanoflakes, forming a uniform flower-like porous structure. The three-dimensional porous network of the Co3O4 depositing layer can not only facilitate the transportation of ions and electrolyte within the electrode, but also provide plenty of space to accommodate Li2O2 species formed during the discharge process. The Co3O4 spheres embedded in the TiO2 fiber mesh, formed by the treatment of a suspension of cobaltammine precipitate, function as anchors to prevent the detachment of the Co3O4 layer from the current collector, resulting in excellent structural and cycling stability. Only a slight specific capacity decay is observed at full discharge/charge after 80 cycles. This work demonstrates the important factors in the preparation of binder-free cathodes for high performance lithium-oxygen batteries.

A NiO-RuO2 Nanoparticle-Decorated Carbon Powder Cathode for Non-Aqueous Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries have been considered as one of the most promising power sources for electric vehicles and portable devices, due to the high theoretical capacity (3.86×103 mAh g-1) and energy density (1.14×104 Wh kg-1) [1]. The electrochemical reactions in the discharge and charge processes involve the formation and decomposition of the solid product Li2O2 in the cathode. Carbon has been regarded as one of the most attractive cathode materials, due to its good conductivity, high specific area, proper pore volume, and low cost. However, it has been shown that both the highly oxidizing environment (O2 -) and Li2O2 can lead to the decomposition of carbon materials to form a thin Li2CO3 film at the carbon interface [2]. Besides, carbon can promote decomposition of the electrolyte to form side products (e.g. lithium carbonate and carboxylates) [3]. These irreversible side products accumulate on the cathode surface, leading to a high overpotential during charge, resulting in a short cycle life. A new strategy to solve these issues is to promote the decomposition of side products. In this regard, we here developed a NiO-RuO2 nanoparticle-decorated carbon powder cathode. As NiO has been reported to have activity in the oxidation of carbonate and carboxylate species [4], we used NiO nanoparticles to decorate the carbon powder with two features: i) protect the surface defects, alleviating the decomposition of the electrolyte; and ii) promote the oxidation of side products, retaining the activate surfaces. To further lower the charge overpotential, we meanwhile decorated RuO2 nanoparticles on the carbon powder surface. As a result, this NiO-RuO2 nanoparticle-decorated carbon powder cathode can enable a non-aqueous lithium-oxygen battery with a low charge overpotential and long cycle life. Further analysis and electrochemical characterizations will be presented at the meeting. The lithium-oxygen battery performance employing this type of cathode will also be presented at the meeting. Highly-efficient MnO2/carbon Array-Type Catalytic Cathode Enabling Confined Li2O2 Growth for Long-Life Li–O2 Batteries

Abstract:Li–O2 batteries recently have attracted intensive research interest because of the rather high energy density. The electrochemical performance of Li–O2 batteries, however, is largely limited by the insulating and reactive Li2O2, which necessitates a renovation on the design of catalytic cathodes. In this work, we propose a unique MnO2/carbon submicron tube (MnO2/CST) array-type catalytic cathode capable of controlling Li2O2 growth spatially and structurally. The high catalytic activity of ultrathin MnO2 nanosheets enables conformal growth of thin-layered Li2O2 on the MnO2 sheets, which relieves or defers electrode deactivation upon discharge and renders easy catalytic decomposition of Li2O2 upon charge. In situ transmission electron microscopy characterization confirms the presence of Li2O2 on discharged MnO2/CST and reveals the phase transition and morphology changes upon charge. The array-type architecture of the catalytic cathode facilitates barrier-free transportation of oxygen gas and Li ions. The absence of polymer binder and the reduced carbon exposure to Li2O2 (or LiO2) exclude or minimize the parasitic reactions related to binder and carbon. As a result, Li–O2 cells with MnO2/CST catalytic cathode exhibit superior cycling stability and low polarization. At 800mAg–1, the cell can sustain a stable cycling of over 300 cycles at a limited capacity of 1000 mAh g–1.
A Carbon- and Binder-Free Nanostructured Cathode for High-Performance Nonaqueous Li-O 2 Battery.

Abstract:Operation of the nonaqueous Li-O battery critically relies on the reversible oxygen reduction/evolution reactions in the porous cathode. Carbon and polymeric binder, widely used for the construction of Li-O cathode, have recently been shown to decompose in the O environment and thus cannot sustain the desired battery reactions. Identifying stable cathode materials is thus a major current challenge that has motivated extensive search for noncarbonaceous alternatives. Here, RuO /titanium nitride nanotube arrays (RuO /TiN NTA) containing neither carbon nor binder are used as the cathode for nonaqueous Li-O batteries. The free standing TiN NTA electrode is more stable than carbon electrode, and possesses enhanced electronic conductivity compared to TiN nanoparticle bound with polytetrafluoroethylene due to a direct contact between TiN and Ti mesh substrate. RuO is electrodeposited into TiN NTA to form a coaxial nanostructure, which can further promote the oxygen evolution reaction. This optimized monolithic electrode can avoid the side reaction arising from carbon material, which exhibits low overpotential and excellent cycle stability over 300 cycles. These results presented here demonstrate a highly effective carbon-free cathode and further imply that the structure designing of cathode plays a critical role for improving the electrochemical performance of nonaqueous Li-O batteries.
Integrated Porous Cathode Made of Pure Perovskite Lanthanum Nickel Oxide for Nonaqueous Lithium–Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:The development of non-carbon electrodes for nonaqueous lithium-oxygen batteries has become a recent focus as carbon electrodes were found to be unstable. Conventional non-carbon electrodes are typically formed with a substrate/current collector, which will decrease the practical capacity. Here, we propose an integrated porous electrode made of LaNiO3 that does not require a substrate/current collector. The porous structure allows the formation of nanosized pores on the walls of microsized pores, which facilitates the transport of both oxygen and lithium ions. Importantly, all the surfaces of the porous structure are catalytically active for electrochemical reactions. Experimental results show that the adoption of the electrode in the battery enables a capacity of 1.064 mAhcm(-2) at a current density of 0.05 mAcm(-2). Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the battery can be cycled for at least 25 cycles at a fixed capacity of 0.3 mAhcm(-2), and the electrode shows no degradation after the cycles.
Porous Mn2O3 Cathode for Highly Durable Li-CO2 Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable Li-CO2 batteries are gaining increasing popularity for reversible electrochemical energy conversion and storage by utilization of the reactions between CO2 and Li metal. However, a high charging voltage (>4.0 V) should be applied to drive the electrochemical decomposition of the discharged products Li2CO3 and C, which results in a high charge overpotential and electrolyte decomposition. Therefore, low-cost and highly effective cathode catalysts are particularly desirable. Herein, porous-structured Mn2O3 was prepared via a facile sol-gel method and carefully characterized by SEM, TEM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. As a cathode for Li-CO2 batteries, Mn2O3 shows superior catalytic activity and durable cycling stability (2000 h) at a current density of 50 mA g(-1). Furthermore, the discharge products, Li2CO3 and C, were obtained and systematically studied using several experimental techniques. The C products obtained on the discharged Mn2O3 cathode exhibit highly graphitized features, as revealed by Raman spectroscopy and XPS. We believe that this study will promote the understanding of the Li-CO2 battery reaction mechanism and the development of highly effective low-cost cathode catalysts for Li-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Advanced cathode catalysts are crucial to the promotion of aprotic Li-O-2 batteries for practical applications. Carbon is usually used as a cathode catalyst, but it reacts with the discharge products (Li2O2, LiO2) to form an insulating layer of lithium carbonate and prevents further reaction. To resolve this issue, the development of non-carbon cathode catalysts is of great demand. Herein, for the first time, we designed and fabricated a MnCo2O4 (MCO) spinel oxide decorated Magneli phase Ti4O7 as a carbon-free cathode for Li-O-2 batteries. The sub-stoichiometric Ti4O7 oxide serves as an electronic conductive network. The MCO spinel oxide along with the synergistic effect between Ti4O7 and MCO facilitate the kinetics of both oxygen reduction and decomposition of Li2O2. Furthermore, uniform anchoring of MCO nanoparticles on Ti4O7 surface provides a stable lithium peroxide-cathode interface during the discharge/charge process. The resulting Ti4O7/MCO hybrid proves to be a highly effective cathode catalyst. The discharge/charge voltage gap of the Ti4O7/MCO hybrid is about 0.75 V, which is significantly lower than that of pure carbon, C + MCO and pristine Ti4O7 cathode. A high specific capacity (5400 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1)) and excellent cycling performance (100 cycles at a capacity of 500 mA h g(-1) under 200 mA g(-1)) were obtained for this hybrid. The high catalytic activity and durability renders the Ti4O7/MCO hybrid a highly promising carbon-free cathode for Li-O-2 batteries.

Abstract:A carbon-free, three-dimensional network structured material composed of (Co, Mn)3O4 nanowires and Ni foam was synthesized. Without the addition of any binder or conductive additives, it could be employed as the air electrode for lithium-oxygen batteries and delivers a specific capacity of 3605 mA h g(electrode)(-1) at a current density of 0.05 mA cm(-2). Fifty cycles of continuous discharge and charge have been obtained with a cut-off capacity of 500 mA h g(electrode)(-1). The high reversibility and large capacity of the batteries is largely attributed to the unique features of the as-prepared (Co, Mn)3O4@Ni electrode, which enables the surface of nanowires to become highly accessible to the reactants and provides more void volume for the deposition of discharge products. This work suggests that there is great potential in employing the carbon-free (Co, Mn)3O4@Ni as air electrodes for lithium-oxygen batteries.
MnOx as Electrocatalyst for Lithium Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:A series of manganese oxide nanorods are prepared as catalysts for lithium oxygen batteries. The dependence of discharge capacity and cycle performance on various manganese oxide catalysts is evaluated. It is found that high surface area of MnO2 catalyst can facilitate Li2O2 decomposition, so the cycling performance of the cell could be improved greatly. The clew-like γ-MnO2 catalyzed lithium oxygen cell is found with the highest reversible lithium storage capacity exceeding 2 350 mAh-g^-1 over 5 cycles even in a higher carbon loading condition, and specific capacity associated with the total mass of the cathode can be calculated as 1 175 mAh .g^-1 which is to be about ten times higher than that of the conventional lithium batteries. The performance of lithium oxygen batteries catalyzed by various MnOx is contrasted and catalyst failure mechanism is also discussed.

Abstract:The practical applications of non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries are impeded by large overpotentials and unsatisfactory cycling durability. Herein, we report that commonly encountered fatal problems can be efficiently solved by using a carbon- and binder-free electrode of titanium coated with TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Ultraviolet irradiation of the TNAs generates positively charged holes, which efficiently decompose Li 2 O 2 and Li2CO3 during recharging thereby reducing the overpotential to near the equilibrium potential for Li 2 O 2 formation. The AuNPs promote Li 2 O 2 formation resulting in a large discharge capacity. The electrode exhibits excellent stability with ~100% coulombic efficiency during continuous cycling of up to 200 cycles which is due to the carbon- and binder-free composition. This work reveals a new strategy towards the development of highly efficient oxygen electrode materials for lithium-oxygen batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) have attracted much attention because of their extraordinarily high specific energies. They possess critical weaknesses, however, such as poor cyclic stability, low energy efficiencies, as well as serious safety issues arising from the formation of lithium dendrites. Here, we report the synthesis of a long-life Li ion O2 battery (LIOB) consisting of an anode made from pre-lithiated aluminum (Al) foil and a Li2O2-preloaded oxygen cathode, which are both commercially available. The assembled LIOB delivers an excellent specific reversible capacity of 1000mAhg−1carbon for over 100 cycles at 100mAg−1 and a maximum specific energy density of 1178Whkg−1. The pre-lithiated Al foil functions as both the anode and current collector, and the stable solid electrolyte interphase layer formed on anode during pre-lithiation greatly improves the cyclic stability. In view of abundance and availability of the cathode and anode materials, the assembly strategy developed here can offer a promising route to large-scale fabrication of LIOBs for real-world applications.

Abstract:O2‐type layered Li0.85□0.15[Li0.08□0.04Ni0.22Mn0.66]O2 (O2‐LLNMO) and Li0.62□0.38[□0.04Ni0.24Mn0.72]O2 (O2‐LNMO) are prepared via a Na+/Li+ ion‐exchange strategy. In O2‐LLNMO, Li ions occupy both the Li and TM layers, forming a Li─O─Li configuration, which enhances oxygen activity and improves oxygen reversibility compared to O2‐LNMO. Notably, the commonly observed voltage decay in Li‐ and Mn‐rich cathodes is significantly reduced in O2‐LLNMO. O2‐type layered oxides have emerged as promising cathode materials for high‐energy lithium‐ion batteries, offering a solution to mitigate voltage decay through reversible transition metal (TM) migration between TM and Li layers during cycling. However, achieving a fully reversible oxygen redox remains a significant challenge. Here, this is addressed by introducing Li─O─Li configurations in the layered structure of Li0.85□0.15[Li0.08□0.04Ni0.22Mn0.66]O2 (O2‐LLNMO), where □ represents vacancies. This adjustment alters the redox‐active oxygen environment and increases the energy gap between the O 2p nonbonding and TM─O antibonding bands. As a result, the contribution of lattice oxygen to capacity is significantly enhanced, improving the reversibility of oxygen redox processes. The O2‐LLNMO cathode demonstrates minimal voltage decay (0.13 mV per cycle) and excellent cycling stability, retaining 95.8% of its capacity after 100 cycles. A novel strategy is presented to design high‐performance layered oxides with stable anionic redox activity, advancing the development of next‐generation lithium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-oxygen batteries, especially the nonaqueous lithium-oxygen batteries have attracted much attention in recent years due to their high energy densities. However, few critical challenges remain to be overcome, including the low round-trip efficiency, high charge overpotential, poor cycling performance, decomposition of electrolyte, and instability of the carbon-based electrode. Among these, the instability of the carbon-based electrode is one of the major problems that hindered the practical application of the Li-O-2 batteries. Much work has been done to solve this problem and there are two widely-applied strategies: modification of carbon and designing a "carbon-free" cathode. In this review, we will introduce recent achievements of both strategies.
Defect-induced deposition of manganese oxides on hierarchical carbon nanocages for high-performance lithium-oxygen batteries

Abstract:The cathode of lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries should have large space for high Li2O2 uptake and superior electrocatalytic activity to oxygen evolution/reduction for long lifespan. Herein, a high-performance MnOx/hCNC cathode was constructed by the defect-induced deposition of manganese oxide (MnOx) nanoparticles on hierarchical carbon nanocages (hCNC). The corresponding Li-O2 battery (MnOx/hCNC@Li-O2) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity with the low overpotential of 0.73–0.99 V in the current density range of 0.1–1.0 A·g−1. The full discharge capacity and cycling life of MnOx/hCNC@Li-O2 were increased by ∼86.7% and ∼91%, respectively, compared with the hCNC@Li-O2 counterpart. The superior performance of MnOx/hCNC cathode was ascribed to (i) the highly dispersed MnOx nanoparticles for boosting the reversibility of oxygen evolution/reduction reactions, (ii) the interconnecting pore structure for increasing Li2O2 accommodation and facilitating charge/mass transfer, and (iii) the concealed surface defects of hCNC for suppressing side reactions. This study demonstrated an effective strategy to improve the performance of Li-O2 batteries by constructing cathodes with highly dispersed catalytic sites and hierarchical porous structure.

Abstract:A high capacity cathode is the key to the realization of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. The anionic oxygen redox induced by activation of the Li2 MnO3 domain has previously afforded an O3-type layered Li-rich material used as the cathode for lithium-ion batteries with a notably high capacity of 250-300 mAh g-1 . However, its practical application in lithium-ion batteries has been limited due to electrodes made from this material suffering severe voltage fading and capacity decay during cycling. Here, it is shown that an O2-type Li-rich material with a single-layer Li2 MnO3 superstructure can deliver an extraordinary reversible capacity of 400 mAh g-1 (energy density: ≈1360 Wh kg-1 ). The activation of a single-layer Li2 MnO3 enables stable anionic oxygen redox reactions and leads to a highly reversible charge-discharge cycle. Understanding the high performance will further the development of high-capacity cathode materials that utilize anionic oxygen redox processes.
