Abstract:Nonlinear optical vibrational spectroscopies are powerful experimental tools for inspecting material properties that are difficult to acquire otherwise. As ultrafast lasers used in such experiments are typically of much broader bandwidth than vibrational modes, narrowband filtering is usually essential, and the utility of laser energy is often highly inefficient. Here we introduce an experimental scheme to break this trade-off. A broadband beam is spatially chirped as it reaches the sample, and generates sum-frequency signals upon overlapping with another broadband, unchirped beam. A narrowband spectrum can then be retrieved from the spatially dispersed image of signals, with both broadband pulses fully utilized. The scheme is also readily employed as a spatially resolved spectroscopy technique without scanning, and can be easily extended to other wave-mixing experiments.

Abstract:We present an experimental observation on spectrum evolution of femtosecond pulses in filamentation by introducing a hollow fiber as a probe and moving it along the filament. The results show that at a particular position of the filament, the pulse spectrum from the hollow fiber expands to its maximum, which corresponds to the shortest pulse duration existing in the filament. The influence of gas pressure on the spectrum broadening is also examined.

Abstract:We studied the effects of different peak powers and initial pulse shapes during femtosecond laser pulse propagation in air. The full 3D simulation result showed that there was a bundle of discontinuous filaments along intense femtosecond laser pulse propagation axis. Comparisons between pulses with different input peak powers and initial pulse shapes could help us to find ways for forming long and uniform plasma channel in air.

Abstract:This Letter proposes a brand-new filament diameter measurement method based on what is called "dual diffraction," in that a grating is added behind the filament to make full use of its subdivision and amplification characteristics. Higher measurement accuracy is achieved by this method compared with the traditional diffraction method. To verify its accuracy, three standard filaments with nominal values of 100.2, 120.1, and 140.8 mu m are measured by the dual diffraction method and traditional diffraction method under the same experimental conditions. The relative measurement errors of the new method are less than 0.75%, and its average relative error is reduced by 56% compared with the traditional diffraction method.

Abstract:Self-phase modulation of light in a nonlinear medium is a well-known phenomenon resulting from the intensity dependence of refractive indices. Its occurrence in space leads to self-focusing or defocusing, while its occurrence in time yields spectral broadening. With ultrashort laser pulses, the spectral broadening can be so strong as to form a continuum extending from IR to near UV. Such a broadening has been used extensively as a continuum source in the studies of ultrafast phenomena, but its basic understanding is not yet complete.

Abstract:Spectrum evolution in the filament was experimentally demonstrated with a 420μm diameter, 18cm length hollow fiber. The experimental results show that the spectrum evolution in filamentation result from the different pulse duration along the filamentation. In our experiment, at a particular position of the filament, the pulse can be compressed to 24.8fs from 50fs of the incident pulse.

Abstract:The influence of air turbulence on the long- range filamentation of femtosecond laser pulses has been numerically investigated. Simulations are performed for different parameters of air turbulence and laser pulses. Simulation results indicate that the diameter of filaments formed by free propagated fs laser pulse can be widened to mm level under air turbulence. However, the widening effect can be suppressed if the propagating distance before the on-set position of filamentation becomes shorter. The reduction of non-linear focal length can be realized by pre-focusing of the laser pulse or increasing of the laser intensity. The effect of the inner scale of air turbulence on the filamentation has also been studied. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Propagation of an intense ultrashort laser pulse in a nonlinear medium leads to a huge spectral broadening of the pulse. This phenomenon has attracted a great deal of attention in the past decade but has not yet received a satisfactory explanation. Two mechanisms, self-phase modulation1 and parametric four-wave mixing,2 have been proposed as being responsible for the spectral broadening. Neither, however, can explain fully the experimental observation.

Abstract:We have made quantitative measurements on the characteristics of self-focusing varying from transient to quasi-steady-state. The results agree well with a simple unified physical description of self-focusing and with known theoretical predictions. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is identified as the mechanism responsible for the limiting diameter of the self-focused beam in our experiment.

Abstract:The filamentation mechanisms of prefocused and freely propagated femtosecond laser pulses are compared using the ray-tracing method. The dynamic spatial replenishment mechanism takes place in the filaments with high electron density, which is generally formed by prefocused laser pulses. The mechanism of long-range filamentation over 100 m distance is analyzed to be the spatiotemporal moving focus.

Abstract:The effects of turbulence intensity and turbulence region on the distribution of femtosecond laser filaments are experimentally elaborated. Through the ultrasonic signals emitted by the filaments, and it is observed that increasing turbulence intensity and expanding turbulence active region cause an increase in the start position of the filament, and a decrease in filament length, which can be well explained by the theoretical calculation. It is also observed that the random perturbation of the air refractive index caused by atmospheric turbulence expanded the spot size of the filament. Additionally, when turbulence intensity reaches , multiple filaments are formed. Furthermore, the standard deviation of the transverse displacement of filament is found to be proportional to the square root of turbulent structure constant under the experimental turbulence parameters in this paper. These results contribute to the study of femtosecond laser propagation mechanisms in complex atmospheric turbulence conditions

Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using multiple equal-amplitude spectral lines generated by multifrequency phase modulation, The theoretical analysis shows that 4n-1 equal-amplitude spectral lines can be obtained if the modulation signal comprises the fundamental frequency and the odd harmonic waves, where n denotes the number of frequency components in the modulation signal. In experiment, 7 and 11 equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained and Brillouin bandwidths of 340 and 570 MHz are gained, respectively. The experimental results also indicate that the slope of the broadening factor for the delayed signal decreases in the case of broad and flattened Brillouin gain spectrum. Abstract:Using variational analysis, the nonlinear equation is simplified. The filamentation dynamics is analogous to the problem of a particle moving in a potential well, then self-focusing, diffraction and multiple-photon ionization mechanisms are denoted by non dimensional symbols. The evolvement of beam power, radius, wavefront curvature, and temporal profile is discussed with different initial conditions. The results are qualitatively coincident with some major experimental observations such as filamentation and refocus phenomenon.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser pulse filamentation in the air can be used for remote sensing by exciting a characteristic optical emission, which is usually referred to as filamentation-induced breakdown spectroscopy. In environments that impede light propagation, such as fog, haze, or clouds, scattering makes it challenging to propagate laser beams and retrieve generated optical signatures. We demonstrate the effectiveness of laser filamentation for simultaneously clearing the path for intense femtosecond pulse propagation in a highly scattering medium, generation of luminous plasma on a solid target, and counter-propagation of a characteristic spectroscopic signal over a cleared channel along the filament path. In a dense cloud, the counter-propagating signal predominantly transits the cleared on-axis path but is highly affected by the negative thermal lensing of a Gaussian beam. These insights enhance our understanding of laser filamentation in atmospheric sensing and could substantially improve remote detection capabilities in poor visibility conditions.

Abstract:Spectral superbroadening of ultrashort-pulse propagation in a nonlinear medium is calculated by solving the nonlinear-wave equation more exactly. The effects of four-wave mixing and pulse deformation on phase modulation are included. The results yield an asymmetric Stokes-anti-Stokes broadening in fair agreement with the experimental observation.

Abstract:By increasing the local temperature at different positions along the argon gas-filled tube, the difference in filament and spectrum broadening was compared in this paper. The experimental results show that the filament can be controlled by increasing the local temperature of the gas-filled tube. The best way to realise the maximum of such a influence is to heat at the focus point. Spectrum broadening will be narrow with the increase of the local temperature.

Abstract:The filamentation of a focused femtosecond pulse in fused silica was systemically investigated both experimentally and numerically. We observed the different filamentation of a laser pulse under different external focusing conditions and input energy experimentally. For instance, a focused femtosecond laser pulse with an energy of 3.3 muJ induced a long electron plasma filament for an effective numerical aperture (NA) of 0.01 of focusing objective, an electron plasma filament with two-foci structure for 0.04 effective NA, and a short filament for effective NA of 0.09. In theory, the numerical results of the extended nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation agreed with experimental results under different focusing conditions and energy. Moreover, under different focusing conditions we found the filamentation is connected with different temporal reshaping behaviors, and the temporal compression of the reshaped laser pulse in propagation is responsible for the two-foci structure of an electron plasma filament.

Abstract:The characteristics of the multiple filaments formed by prefocused and freely propagating femtosecond laser pulses are investigated and compared. It is shown in our experiments that the diameter, length, stability, and interaction for the two cases can be quite different. The filaments formed by prefocused beam indicate dynamic spatial evolution with higher laser intensity and electron density. They have a typical diameter of 100 mu m are of shorter length. In the free propagation case, the filaments exhibit interesting properties such as hundred-meter propagation distance and mm-size diameter. Moreover, only the interaction of the filaments with the energy background affects the evolution of the filaments. Filament-filament interactions such as the filament splitting and merging were not observed in this case.

Abstract:Results of laboratory experiments on control of the filamentation domain of a focused femtosecond laser beam with a spatially structured (with a deformable mirror) wavefront are described. Aberration beams consisting of coherent interleaved ring subapertures obtained with a deformable mirror of specific form are studied. This allows producing inhomogeneities in the distribution of the optical field amplitude during laser beam propagation; these inhomogeneities can subsequently become seeds for light filaments. This approach to control high-power radiation filamentation does not require compensation for distortions of the initial beam profile; on the contrary, it is based on a controllable introduction of pre-calculated wavefront aberrations.
