Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an ideal template to construct high-efficiency catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their predictable properties. However, the closely parallel-stacking manner and lacking intramolecular electron transfer ability of COFs limit atomic utilization efficiency and intrinsic activity. Herein, COFs are constructed with large interlayer distances and enhanced electronic transfer ability by side-chain functionalization. Long chains with electron-donating features not only enlarge interlayer distance, but also narrow the bandgap. The resulting DPPS-COF displays higher electrochemical surface areas to provide more exposed active sites, despite <1/10 surface areas. DPPS-COF exhibits excellent electrocatalytic ORR activity with half-wave potential of 0.85 V, which is 30 and 60 mV positive than those of Pt/C and DPP-COF, and is the record among the reported COFs. DPPS-COF is employed as cathode electrocatalyst for zinc-air battery with a maximum power density of 185.2 mW cm-2 , which is superior to Pt/C. Theoretical calculation further reveals that longer electronic-donating chains not only facilitate the formation of intermediate OOH* from O2 , but also promote intermediates desorption , and thus leading to higher activity.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials hybridized with metal sulfides have gained growing attention as catalytic materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their synergistic effects in terms of richer structural features and higher electrochemical activities. Here, a series of Zn/Co/Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursors, which can be adopted as efficient ORR catalysts, were synthesized through a sulfuration–calcination treatment. The effects of precursor composition, heteroatom doping, and pyrolysis temperature on the structure and electrochemical performance of the catalysts were discussed in detail. It is found that well-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the surface of graphitic carbon matrix are formed under the synergy effect of trimetallic-based species during pyrolysis. Benefiting from the three-dimensional unique structure with appropriate dopants and high porosity, the catalyst derived from the optimized Zn/Co/Fe-MOFs achieves a half-wave potential of 0.87 V in an alkaline medium for ORR, which is comparable with commercial electrocatalysts. In addition, an outstanding ORR durability of the proposed catalyst in alkaline media was also demonstrated. This work highlights the potential to rationally design and fabricate high-performance ORR catalysts for commercialization.

Abstract:Designing noble metal-free electrocatalysts with novel structure and high performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been long pursued in many electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies but remains a great challenge. Here, a novel zirconium-porphyrin metal-organic framework (MOF) hierarchical nanoframework structure assembled by nanosheets is synthesized. Subsequent pyrolysis and acid etching of such material generates N-doped hierarchical graphitic carbon nanoframework (N-GCF) equipped with M-N-4 units. The N-GCF catalyst demonstrates high ORR activity and stability with large diffusion-limited current density (6.19 mA cm(-2)) and half-wave potential (0.83 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode), which is one of the best carbon-based ORR catalysts in basic electrolyte. Systematic experiments and characterizations reveal that favorable internal spaces and pores, unique hierarchical structure, and numerous nitrogen-doped and metal-N-4 species synergistically contribute to the remarkably enhanced catalytic activity for ORR. This work is expected to expand the toolbox for the design and synthesis of MOF-derived functional materials for electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are desirable but challenge in harsh conditions, which seriously limits the widespread application of many clean energy devices. Herein, a series of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) assemblies are fabricated using a freestanding template and further used as pyrolytic precursors for synthesizing metal-free ORR catalysts. Impressively, the optimized 3D porous nitrogendoped carbon (PNC-30) exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.90 and 0.76 V in alkaline and acidic electrolytes, respectively. Furthermore, when used as the cathode in zinc-air batteries, PNC-30 reaches a power density of 150 mW cm-2, 1.6 times higher than the commercial Pt/C. And, the PEMFCs equipped with PNC-30 cathode deliver a high power density of 562 W g-1. Experimental results and computational analysis indicate that the outstanding ORR performance is ascribed to the unique trimodal-porous structure, where micropores give abundant active sites/defects and meso-/macropores provide rapid mass transfer capabilities.

Abstract:Porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (PMOFs) are very appealing electrocatalytic materials, in part, due to their highly porous backbone, well-defined and dispersed metal active sites, and their long-range order. Herein a series of (Co)PCN222 (PCN: porous coordination network) (nano)particles with different sizes are successfully prepared by coordination modulation synthesis. These particles exhibit stability in 0.1mHClO(4)electrolyte with no obvious particle size or compositional changes observed after being soaked for 3 days in the electrolyte or during electrocatalysis. This long-term stability enables the in-depth investigation into the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, and it is further demonstrated that the (Co)PCN222 particle size correlates with its catalytic activity. Of the three particle sizes evaluated (characteristic length scales of 200, 500, and 1000 nm), the smallest size demonstrates the highest mass activity while the largest size has the highest surface area normalized activity. Together these results highlight the importance of determining the structural stability of framework catalysts and provide insights into the important roles of particle size, opening new avenues to investigate and improve the electrocatalytic performance of this class of framework material.

Abstract:The rational design and facile synthesis of metal organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity still remains challenging. Herein, we report on a simple yet robust route to dual-shelled Co, N, and S co-doped hollow carbon nanocages (denoted Co-N/S-DSHCN) with outstanding ORR performance. The concurrent compositional and structural engineering of the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67), enabled by its coating with trithiocyanuric acid (TCA), yields core-shelled precursor particles which are subsequently carbonized into Co-N/S-DSHCN. Notably, Co-N/S-DSHCN-3.5 outperforms the commercial Pt/C, representing a +25 mV onset potential (E-on) and a +43 mV half-wave potential (E-1/2) in 0.1 M KOH and a comparable E-1/2 to Pt/C in 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Such impressive ORR activities of Co-N/S-DSHCN-3.5 originate from the effective synergy of Co, N, and S co-doping (i.e., a compositional tuning) in conjunction with a unique dual-shelled hollow architecture containing hierarchical porosity (i.e., a structural tailoring).
A 3D Covalent Organic Framework with In-situ Formed Pd Nanoparticles for Efficient Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Non-platinum noble metals are highly desirable for the development of highly active, stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts for fuel cells and metal-air batteries. However, how to improve the utilization of non-platinum noble metals is an urgent issue. Herein, a highly efficient catalyst for ORR was prepared through homogeneous loading of Pd precursors by a domain-limited method in a three-dimensional covalent organic framework (COF) followed by pyrolysis. The morphology of the Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) was well maintained after carbonization, which was attributed to the rigid structure of the 3D COF. Thanks to the uniform distribution of Pd NPs in the carbon, the catalyst exhibited a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.906 V and a Tafel slope of 70 mV dec-1 in 0.1 M KOH, surpassing the commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.863 V and 75 mV dec-1 ). Furthermore, a maximum power density of 144.0 mW cm-2 was achieved at 252 mA cm-2 , which was significantly higher than the control battery (105.1 mW cm-2 ). This work not only provides a simple strategy for in-situ preparation of highly dispersible metal catalysts in COFs, but also offers new insights into the ORR electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is central in carbon-neutral energy devices. While platinum group materials have shown high activities for ORR, their practical uses are hampered by concerns over deactivation, slow kinetics, exorbitant cost, and scarce nature reserve. The low cost yet high tunability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) provide a unique platform for tailoring their characteristic properties as new electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a new concept of design and present stable Zr-chain-based MOFs as efficient electrocatalysts for ORR. The strategy is based on using Zr-chains to promote high chemical and redox stability and, more importantly, tailor the immobilization and packing of redox active-sites at a density that is ideal to improve the reaction kinetics. The obtained new electrocatalyst, PCN-226, thereby shows high ORR activity. We further demonstrate PCN-226 as a promising electrode material for practical applications in rechargeable Zn-air batteries, with a high peak power density of 133 mW cm–2. Being one of the very few electrocatalytic MOFs for ORR, this work provides a new concept by designing chain-based structures to enrich the diversity of efficient electrocatalysts and MOFs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Rational design of non-noble metal catalysts with an electrocatalytic activity comparable or even superior to Pt is extremely important for future fuel cell-based renewable energy devices. Herein, we demonstrate a new concept that a metal-organic framework (MOF) can be used as a novel precursor to in situ encapsulate Co@Co3O4@C core@bishell nanoparticles (NPs) into a highly ordered porous carbon matrix (CM) (denoted as Co@Co3O4@C-CM). The central cobalt ions from the MOF are used as a metal source to produce Co metal cores, which are later transformed into a fancy Co@Co3O4 nanostructure via a controlled oxidation. The most notable feature of our Co@Co3O4@C-CM is that the highly ordered CM can provide much better transport pathways than the disordered pure MOF derived nanostructure that can facilitate the mass transport of O-2 and an electrolyte. As a result, the well-designed Co@Co3O4@C-CM derived from the MOF shows almost identical activity but superior stability and methanol tolerance for the ORR relative to the commercial Pt/C in alkaline medium. Our work reports a novel Co@Co3O4@C nanostructure from a MOF for the first time and also reveals the important role of the introduction of a highly ordered carbon matrix into the MOF derived catalyst in enhancing the ORR activity and stability. To the best of our knowledge, the Co@Co3O4@C-CM is the most efficient non-noble metal nanocatalyst ever reported for the ORR.

Abstract:The pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ingenious way to synthesize carbon-based materials with unique morphology for various applications including electrocatalysis. In this work, we reported a facile morphology regulation strategy for the synthesis of a spherical superstructure of MOF nanosheets. The use of metal hydroxide nanosheets on Zn particles as precursors/templates allowed MOFs with general polyhedron shape to form nanosheets and assemble into a spherical superstructure in the ligand solution. Further, a hollow spherical superstructure of carbon nanosheets decorated with metal-based nanoparticles was fabricated through the pyrolysis of MOF nanosheet superstructures at 950 °C, where the substrate/template Zn particle cores were evaporated away. The obtained composites possess carbon-based superstructures with abundant mesopores and metal-based nanoparticles with rich alloy/oxide interfaces. These features endow this MOF-derived carbon-based material with outstanding bifunctional activity for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions and great performances in Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials doped with nitrogen/transition metals (metal-N-C) are promising to substitute platinum (Pt) for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Metal N-C can be effectively derived from pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks but usually suffers from microscale aggregation. Herein, we report an in situ approach to anchor zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co, N-doped porous carbon on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), labeled CNTs@Co-N-PC, and investigate its performance as electrocatalysts for the ORR in alkaline medium. This strategy combines pyrolysis with acid etching of ZIF-67 to convert its Co-N-4 frames into stable and dense Co, N-doped porous carbon on the surface of MWCNTs. In the core-shell-like CNTs@Co-N-PC hybrid catalysts, the MWCNTs serving as supports effectively inhibit the aggregation of Co-N-PC and therefore guarantee sufficient active sites available for the occurrence of the ORR. Consequently, these CNTs@Co-N-PC electrocatalysts exhibit comparable activity to commercial Pt/C and are featured with favorable long-term durability and superior methanol tolerance.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is one of the key steps in clean and efficient energy conversion techniques such as in fuel cells and metal-air batteries; however, several disadvantages of current ORRs including the kinetically sluggish process and expensive catalysts hinder mass production of these devices. Herein, we develop carbonized nanoparticles, which are derived from monodisperse nanoscale metal organic frameworks (MIL-88B-NH3), as the high performance ORR catalysts. The onset potential and the half-wave potential for the ORR at these carbonized nanoparticles is up to 1.03 and 0.92 V (vs RHE) in 0.1 M KOH solution, respectively, which represents the best ORR activity of all the non-noble metal catalysts reported so far. Furthermore, when used as the cathode of the alkaline direct fuel cell, the power density obtained with the carbonized nanoparticles reaches 22.7 mW/cm2, 1.7 times higher than the commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Abstract:The rational design of assembled metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived carbon materials with rapid mass transport properties and stable porous structure is highly desirable yet a great challenge to date. In this work, MOFs-derived Co/N-doped porous carbon fibers with high electrochemical performance can be prepared simply by carbonizing MOFs nanofibers, which were fabricated by the electrospinning-assisted assembly of bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoparticles (BMZIFs) based on ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. The effects of assembly and Zn/Co ratios on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performances of the electrospun fibers derivatives were systematically studied. As expected, compared to the non-electrospun samples, such doped porous carbon nanofibers exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performances without any etching or other activating processes, and the sample with the molar ratio of Zn: Co = 5:1 even showed comparable ORR performance with the commercial Pt/C catalyst under the same conditions. The high catalytic performances root in the dense assembly of MOFs within the electrospun fibers, which was beneficial to endow the derivatives with the high surface area as well as uniform N and Co doping. Besides, the one-dimensional porous structure significantly promoted the mass transfer and exposure of active sites.
A fully-conjugated covalent organic framework-derived carbon supporting ultra-close single atom sites for ORR

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks linked by CC bonds have gained great attention for various application, and their fully conjugated skeletons were potentially conversed into two-dimensional (2D) carbons. Herein, we described a novel strategy to fabricate 2D carbon nanorods from a sp2 carbon linked COF, which had a high surface area of 804.8 m2 g−1. The one-dimensional channels confined the Fe ions during pyrolysis, which facilitated to form ultra-close atomic sites. The resulting catalyst displayed high catalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction, with a half-wave potential of 0.82 V and a mass activity of 4087.9 mA mg− 1 at 0.7 V versus RHE, which were high than those of Pt/C (0.81 V and 126.3 mA mg− 1). The theoretical calculation revealed the close FeN4 sites achieved a lower *OH adsorption energy than isolated FeN4 sites. This work provides a new insight into developing single atom catalysts from COFs.

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is critical for rechargeable metal-air batteries, a typical electrochemical energy storage and conversion technology. This work reports a general approach for the synthesis of Pd@PdO-Co3O4 nanocubes using the zeolite-type metal-organic framework (MOF) as a template. The as-synthesized materials exhibit a high electrocatalytic activity toward OER and ORR, which is comparable to those of commercial RuO2 and Pt/C electrocatalysts, while its cycle performance and stability are much higher than those of commercial RuO2 and Pt/C electrocatalysts. Various physicochemical characterizations and density functional theory calculations indicate that the favorable electrochemical performance of the Pd@PdO-Co3O4 nanocubes is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between PdO and the robust hollow structure composed of interconnected crystalline Co3O4 nanocubes. This work establishes an efficient approach for the controlled design and synthesis of MOF-templated hybrid nanomaterials, and provides a great potential for developing high-performance electrocatalysts in energy storage and conversion.
Precise Modulation of Carbon Activity Sites in Metal‐Free Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Two metal‐free dibenzo[a,c]phenazine‐based COFs (DBP‐COFs) are synthesized and employed as ORR electrocatalysts. Among them, JUC‐650 exhibites excellent catalytic performance for ORR in alkaline electrolyte, with an onset potential of 0.90 V versus RHE and a half‐wave potential of 0.72 V versus RHE, which has been confirmed as one of the best metal‐free COF‐based ORR electrocatalysts so far. Metal‐free carbon‐based materials have gained recognition as potential electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in new environmentally‐friendly electrochemical energy conversion technologies. The presence of effective active centers is crucial for achieving productive ORR. In this study, we present the synthesis of two metal‐free dibenzo[a,c]phenazine‐based covalent organic frameworks (DBP‐COFs), specifically JUC‐650 and JUC‐651, which serve as ORR electrocatalysts. Among them, JUC‐650 demonstrates exceptional catalytic performance for ORR in alkaline electrolytes, exhibiting an onset potential of 0.90 V versus RHE and a half‐wave potential of 0.72 V versus RHE. Consequently, JUC‐650 stands out as one of the most outstanding metal‐free COF‐based ORR electrocatalysts report to date. Experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations confirm that modulation of the frameworks' electronic configuration allows for the reduction of adsorption energy at the Schiff‐base carbon active sites, leading to more efficient ORR processes. Moreover, the DBP‐COFs can be assembled as excellent air cathode catalysts for zinc‐air batteries (ZAB), rivaling the performance of commercial Pt/C. This study provides valuable insights for the development of efficient metal‐free organoelectrocatalysts through precise regulation of active site strategies.

Abstract:We introduced a pore-expansion strategy to transform metal-organic framework (MOF) into foam-like carbons with high surface area and hierarchical pores. A typical kind of MOF was chosen as the starting material. The catalytic carbon, which displayed a remarkably enlarged surface area and high pore volume, was prepared by a solvent-assistant-linker-exchange method and a following pore-expansion carbonization process. Interestingly, the catalytic carbon possessed a hierarchically porous structure in which micro-, meso- and macro-pores coexisted. Benefiting from the structural merits, it showed superior catalytic performance towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This work emphasizes the importance of interconnecting structures with hierarchical pores towards ORR and opens a new avenue to fabricate advanced nanostructures from MOFs for enhanced electrochemical applications.
