Abstract:In this paper, ZnO nanorod-nanosheet hierarchical structures were fabricated using a facile method on zinc foil and used as flexible photoanodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Compared to nanorods (NRs) obtained by the dissolution-precipitation method, the nanorod-nanosheet (NR-NS) hierarchical structures obtained by a second-step homogeneous precipitation improved the performance of DSCs by increasing photocurrent density significantly. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the devices based on such a NR-NS hierarchical structure reached up to 2.4% under 100 mW cm(-2) illumination condition. This represents an enhancement by 108% as compared to DSCs based on NR assembled nanoflowers, for which the efficiency was 1.1%. The enhancement of the photocurrent was due mainly to the much larger specific surface area and resulting dye-loading amount. The electron transport properties in this structure were also investigated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Furthermore, the formation mechanism of the NR-NS hierarchical structures are discussed.

Abstract:ZnO nanorod–nanoparticles (NR–NPs) hierarchical structure was prepared via a two-step hydrothermal process at 70 °C. In the hierarchical structure, ZnO nanorods prepared at step one served as the backbone for direct electron transport while ZnO nanoparticles synthesized at step two offered large surface area for dye-loading. Both reaction temperature and reaction time at step two had a significant influence on the morphology of the product. At a higher temperature, microspheres appeared above the nanorod film instead of nanoparticles surrounding the nanorods. Prolonging the reaction time to 24 h, the NR–NPs structure would transform to nanorod–nanoplants. Intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy results showed that the photoanode composed of the NR–NPs hierarchical structure had an electron diffusion coefficient (Dn) much higher than that of the nanoparticles. The dye desorption results showed that the dye adsorption amount for the NR–NPs structure was as much as 250% of that for the nanorods. Compared with dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) based on nanorods, the incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of the DSCs based on NR–NPs hierarchical structure improved remarkably. Under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm−2), the power conversion efficiency of DSCs based on photoanodes composed of NR–NPs hierarchical structure exhibited a significant improvement (more than 120%) compared with that of ZnO nanorods.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel TiO2 Nanowires/ZnO Nanosheets (TiO2 NW/ZnO NS) hierarchical structure has been fabricated on Ti foil substrate through a two-step process of hydrothermal and homogenous precipitation. DSSCs device based on such structured flexible photoanode showed a significantly improvement of power conversion efficiency compared to that based on TiO2 NWs, which increased from 0.80% to 1.41% under 100 mW cm(-2) illumination, enhancing 76.2% relatively. The improvement of conversion efficiency is mainly due to the much larger surface area and resulting increased dye-loading amount and photocurrent of TiO2 NW/ZnO NS hierarchical structure.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel photoanode based on Ag NPs decorated branched TiO2 nanorod arrays (BTNR/Ag) was developed, aiming to utilize the comprehensive advantages of fast electron transport and large surface area of,one-dimensional TiO2 hierarchical structure as well as the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag NPs for improving the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The hierarchical BTNR with abundant branches exhibits a novel matrix for Ag NPs deposition by a facile photo-reduction method. It is interesting that the Ag NPs demonstrate a typical size gradient distribution on BTNR. The high density small Ag NPs (less than 10 nm) at the middle part of BTNR are benefit for photo-generated electrons separation and transfer in dye-sensitized BTNR/Ag, while the large Ag NPs at the upper part of BTNR can act as light scattering layer to enhance light harvesting. The incorporation of Ag NPs in the hybrid nanostructure can also improve the dye-loading. As a result, the DSSC based on BTNR/Ag with appropriate content of Ag NPs exhibits higher power conversion efficiency than the DSSC based on pristine BTNR. However, the deposition of excess Ag NPs in BTNR/Ag causes loss of internal surface area and strong charge recombination, leading to decrease of efficiency. The DSSC based on BTNR/Ag synthesized at a 2 mmol L-1 AgNO3 solution shows the highest conversion efficiency, improved by 513% compared with the pristine BTNR-based DSSC. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:One-dimensional ZnO chains composed of nanoparticles were prepared using a facile method. Inspired by the possibility of achieving unique structures for the working electrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), hierarchical ZnO chains can take the advantages of both one-dimensional (1D)-structures and nanoparticles. A superior light scattering ability, slower electron recombination rate and faster electron transport rate together enhanced the photoelectric conversion performance and showed a superior conversion efficiency compared to ZnO 1D-based DSSCs and ZnO nanoparticle-based DSSCs.

Abstract:A novel interface precipitation method has been developed to synthesize hierarchically structured ZnO nanocrystallite aggregates. Such synthesized ZnO nanocrystallite aggregates demonstrated as promising structure for high power conversion efficiency when used as photoelectrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). It has large specific surface area, efficient dye-loading and effective light scattering within the photoelectrode. Such structured ZnO film annealed at different temperature was analyzed and a power conversion efficiency of 5.07% has been obtained with annealed at 300 oC.

Abstract:ZnO nanorod (NR) structures have been fabricated using a precipitation method and applied as an effective scattering layer on the top of a ZnO nanoparticle (NP) electrode in a dye sensitized solar cell (DSC). This can effectively improve the light harvesting and enhance the photocurrent. Furthermore, the scattering layer decreases the charge recombination in DSCs, which is demonstrated by the results of the decreasing dark current and increasing recombination resistance. This leads to a remarkable 35% improvement in the conversion efficiency of the DSC using the ZnO nanorod scattering layer.

Abstract:We present a two-step electrochemical deposition process to synthesize hierarchical zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod-nanosheet structures on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate, which involves electrodeposition of ZnO nanosheet arrays on the conductive glass substrate, followed by electrochemical growth of secondary ZnO nanorods on the backbone of the primary ZnO nanosheets. The formation mechanism of the hierarchical nanostructure is discussed. It is demonstrated that annealing treatment of the primary nanosheets synthesized by the first-step deposition process plays a key role in synthesizing the hierarchical nanostructure. Photovoltaic properties of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on hierarchical ZnO nanostructures are investigated. The hierarchical ZnO nanorod-nanosheet DSSC exhibits improved device performance compared to the DSSC constructed using photoelectrode of bare ZnO nanosheet arrays. The improvement can be attributed to the enhanced dye loading, which is caused by the enlargement of internal surface area within the nanostructure photoelectrode. Furthermore, we perform a parametric study to determine the optimum geometric dimensions of the hierarchical ZnO nanorod-nanosheet photoelectrode through adjusting the preparation conditions of the first- and second-step deposition process. By utilizing a hierarchical nanostructure photoelectrode with film thickness of about 7 mu m, the DSSC with an open-circuit voltage of 0.74 V and an overall power conversion efficiency of 3.12% is successfully obtained.

Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study revealed that reduced charge recombination in ZnO nanocrystallite aggregates resulted in enhanced Voc. As a result, a power conversion efficiency of 5.07% with commercially available dye N719 has been obtained without applying anti-reflection coating and chemical treatment, which was more than 200% of the power conversion efficiency achieved in ZnO nanoparticles synthesized by homogeneous precipitation method in aqueous solution.
Fabrication of Hierarchically Assembled Microspheres Consisting of Nanoporous ZnO Nanosheets for High-Efficiency Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Porous nanosheet-assembled ZnO microspheres (PNMSs) were synthesized via one-pot hydrothermal treatment followed by calcination and were used as photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). An overall light conversion efficiency of up to 5.16% has been achieved with this unitary material and structure. Superior to the referenced porous nanosheet-assembled ZnO microflowers (PNMFs) and porous dispersed ZnO nanosheets (PDNs), as well as precedent nanostructures, the present PNMS fully accommodates all indispensable characteristics for a high-performance DSSC through: (1) the hierarchical ZnO microsphere generates a prominent aggregation-induced light scattering center, which is in favor of enhancing the light absorption and the light propagation; (2) the single crystal nature of the nanosheet enhances the transport of injected electrons along the nanosheet, providing a direct electron pathway throughout the film and lowering the hole-electron recombination; (3) the thin thickness and porous character of the nanosheets results in a large surface area for dye adsorption; (4) intersectional contact with one another of the nanosheets of neighboring spheres increases the transport channel of the injected electrons through the adjacent spheres, avoiding the high resistance existing in the nanoparticle-based sphere aggregates due to the relatively small contact area among the aggregates; (5) these spherical assemblies form large external pores in the photoelectrode film, thus providing a "main trunk'' for the quick electrolyte diffusion throughout the ZnO layer in the film. Simultaneously, the nanopores embedded in the nanosheet act as "branch lines'' for more efficient electrolyte diffusion into the interstices of the densely packing nanosheets in the sphere.

Abstract:We present a two-step electrochemical deposition process to produce hierarchical ZnO nanostructures that involves the electrodeposition of ZnO crystals with different morphologies, followed by the electrochemical epitaxial growth of oriented nanorods on the surfaces of the primary ZnO nanostructures. A variety of hierarchical ZnO nanostructures, including 2-fold nanorod arrays on nanosheets, 6-fold nanorods on nanorods, and 6-fold nanoneedles on nanoneedles, were synthesized on a large scale. The hierarchical nanostructures obtained by this technique are pure and uniform in morphology. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the hierarchical ZnO nanostructure of nanorods on nanosheets provides a good candidate for photoanodes in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:Nanosheet-assembling hierarchical Zn2SnO4 microspheres (NHMSs) are synthesized via one-pot solvothermal route and used as photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). An overall photoconversion efficiency of 3.43% has been achieved with this ternary metal oxide and structure, significantly higher than that derived from dispersed nanosheets (DNSs) electrode (2.06%). The hierarchical Zn2SnO4 microsphere structure is proven to be favorable for enhancement of overall dyesensitized solar cells photoconversion efficiency via (1) the hierarchical Zn2SnO4 microspheres can function as efficient light scatters to enhance the light-harvesting efficiency; (2) intersectional contact with one another of the nanosheets of densely packed neighboring microspheres offers the transport channel for fast electron transport, avoiding the high resistance existing in the nanoparticle-based microspheres due to the relatively small interface resistance; (3) these spherical assemblies form large external pores for dye loading, at the same time, provide a "main trunk" for the quick electrolyte diffusion throughout the Zn2SnO4 layer in the film. Abstract:A hierarchical array of ZnO nanocones covered with ZnO nanospikes was hydrothermally fabricated and employed as the photoanode in a CdS quantum dot-sensitized solar cell (QDSSC). This QDSSC outperformed the QDSSC based on a simple ZnO nanocone photoanode in all the four principal photovoltaic parameters. Using the hierarchical photoanode dramatically increased the short circuit current density and also slightly raised the open circuit voltage and the fill factor. As a result, the conversion efficiency of the QDSSC based on the hierarchical photoanode was more than twice that of the QDSSC based on the simple ZnO nanocone photoanode. This improvement is attributable to both the enlarged specific area of the photoanode and the reduction in the recombination of the photoexcited electrons.

Abstract:Porous zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheet (NS) arrays constructed by connected nanocrystallites were built on weaved metal wire (WMW) via hydrothermal treatment followed by calcination, and used as photoanodes for flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). An overall light-to-electricity conversion efficiency (h) of 2.70% was achieved for the DSSC under 100 mW cm(-2) illumination, and this h was found to be much higher than that of the DSSC with ZnO nanowire (NW) as the photoanode (0.71%). The far superior performance of the DSSC with ZnO-NS is essentially attributed to: (i) the film consisting of nanosheets with interconnected nanocrystallites can allow relatively direct pathways for the transportation of electrons as the nanosheets have a regular structure with the sheets being oriented to the electrode; (ii) the nanocrystallites assembly and porous character of the nanosheets can provide a large surface area for dye adsorption, which is in favor of enhancing the light absorption and the light propagation; (iii) the nanopores embedded in the nanosheet can act as "branch lines" for more efficient electrolyte diffusion into the interstice of the densely packed nanosheets in the array. A further improvement in the efficiency of the DSSC with ZnO-NS was achieved through the atomic layer deposition (ALD) of an ultrathin titanium oxide (TiO2) layer onto the ZnO-NS layer. The larger charge transfer resistance along with the introduction of a TiO2 shell is thought to reduce the surface recombination and thus contribute to the increase in the open circuit voltage (V-oc) of the DSCs and higher conversion efficiency (3.09%).

Abstract:Well-defined ZnO nanowire (NW) arrays with controlled dendritic structures were successfully built on a stainless steel mesh and utilized as photoanodes for the fabrication of large-area, flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The dendritic nanostructure proves favorable for the improvement of the overall light conversion efficiency of the DSSC. An optimized etching time for the affixion of ZnO seeds on the ZnO backbone of the dendritic "tree" and the controlled growth conditions of the branch NW are critical to achieve high conversion efficiency solar cells.

Abstract:Nanowire-based SnO2/Zn2SnO4 hollow microspheres are synthesized using a facile one-pot method for solar energy conversion and environment cleaning. The micrometer-sized hollow spheres possess a hierarchical structure with the shell consisting of nanowires. With the hybrid SnO2/Zn2SnO4 microspheres as photoanodes, the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with an overall 4.72% photoconversion efficiency is obtained, nearly 240% improvement over the DSSCs that uses nanorod-based hierarchical SnO2 microspheres. The hybrid microspheres are also determined to be high-performance photocatalyst with a better recyclability for the photodegradation of dyes under simulated sunlight irradiation. These improvements of solar energy utilization are ascribed to the formation of the heterojunctions between SnO2 and Zn2SnO4 to enhance electron transport and charge-separation efficiencies.

Abstract:The synthesis of one-dimensional zinc oxide nanorod photoelectrodes through a chemical solution method and their application in dye-sensitized solar cells are described in this paper. A multiple growth approach was used to fabricate zinc oxide nanorods with varying length-to-diameter ratios, and their dye adsorption properties were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The zinc oxide photoelectrodes with different length-to-diameter ratios were subsequently incorporated into dye-sensitized solar cells, and their performance and carrier lifetime were analyzed using a solar simulator, monochromatic incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The highest efficiency achieved was 0.74%. The results indicate that the quality of the zinc oxide nanorods synthesized through the multiple growth approach is consistent, with the uniformity and morphology of the nanorods having the greatest impact on device efficiency.
