Abstract:Friction stir processing (FSP) is a promising technique to attain significant grain refinement to improve the mechanical characteristics of magnesium (Mg) alloys. In the present study, FSP has been performed on pristine Mg-2Zn Mg alloy for microstructural refinement and using Taguchi's design of experiment approach influence of four FSP parameters, namely tool pin profile (PP), tool rotational speed (TRS), tool traverse speed (TTS), and tool tilt angle (TA), which has been investigated on grain size (GS) and stir zone area (SZA). Using single-pass FSP, significant grain refinement has been achieved for pristine Mg alloy with grain size reduction from 63.86 to 15.48 μm (75.76% reduction) corresponding to FSP parameters of PP: square pin, TRS: 900 rpm, TTS: 25 mm/min and TA: 2°, whereas highest stir zone area was achieved 11.5 mm 2 , correspond to FSP parameters of PP: square pin, TRS: 1400 rpm, TTS: 16 mm/min and TA: 2°. Using gray relational analysis (GRA), a single optimal setting of FSP parameters for multi-response optimization was obtained corresponding to FSP parameters of PP: square pin, TRS: 1120 rpm, TTS: 25 mm/min, and TA: 2°. Mechanical properties and electrochemical corrosion resistance were evaluated for FSP-treated Mg-2Zn alloy samples obtained at optimal FSP parameters and were compared with pristine Mg alloy samples. FSP treatment resulted in significant improvement in the ultimate tensile strength and ductility of Mg-2Zn alloy. Electrochemical corrosion study revealed that the FSP-treated samples have lower corrosion resistance as compared to pristine Mg-2Zn alloy at 24 hrs of potentiodynamic polarization study, but after 168 h of study, FSP-treated Mg-2Zn alloy showed higher corrosion resistance as compared to pristine Mg alloy. This was due to the formation of a stable passive layer of corrosion products. Thus, FSP treatment using optimal process parameters proves to be an essential manufacturing step for Mg-based biodegradable implants.
