Abstract:Summary form only given. Laser produced plasma has various applications including superconducting films fabrication, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, micro-machining, nanoparticles formation, etc. However, it is a rather complex process, involving lots of correlated physical and chemical interactions among the target, the laser, the plume plasma, and the ambient gas, and calls for more comprehensive researches. In this work, we focused on the dynamics of the nanosecond laser ablated plasma within and after the laser pulse irradiation, and discussed the effects of experimental parameters on plasma dynamics using fast photography technique and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Comprehensive experiments were carried out using a Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm 15 ns) in the open air. Different experimental parameters, including target materials (copper, aluminum, and stainless steel), laser energies, the laser spot sizes and laser incident angle, were investigated. Dynamics of the laser produced plasmas were greatly affected by the laser fluence. The laser fluence was varied by changing the target-lens distance (the laser spot size). Plume plasma exhibited a hemi-spherical like structure when the target was placed 5-8 mm both before and after the lens focus (f = 163mm) at a laser energy fluence about 0.12 J/mm2. When the target moved close to the focus, the plasma plume became to be a stream-like shape at a laser energy fluence of - 1.1 J/mm2. The stream-like structure was composed by two highly irradiated structures, which probably caused by the lasersupported detonation wave (LSDW). Plasma length at different delay time were extracted from the recorded images and fitted with the classic blast wave model. OES were employed to record the emission spectroscopy with a CzernyTurner spectrograph (Andor SR750). From the axial resolved spectroscopic image, lines from the target materials (Cu I, Al I) were observed - 0.25 mm from the target surface, while N I lines from N2- /sub> located at a much wider region from the target surface. The phenomena probably also indicate that the luminous front of the recorded plasma is attributed to ionized air particles. Electron number densities at different delay time were estimated and discussed with the previous plasma images.
