Abstract:In reflective displays, visible light with a wavelength in the range of about 400–700 nm could be either reflected, scattered, or absorbed by the displaying materials in pixels. When light goes through cholesteric liquid crystals, selective reflection occurs with no more than half of the light within the reflection band reflected. Therefore, the efficiency is very low. In order to improve the reflection efficiency of the visible light, a fluorescence dye-coated layer is introduced to the polymer stabilized bistable cholesteric liquid crystal (PSBCLC) films by spin coating and the performances are investigated. The reflection band of PSBCLC is adjusted to match the emission spectrum of the fluorescence dye in order to improve the light efficiency. The dispersion uniformity of dyes, optical and electro-optical properties such as transmittance, emission, driving voltages and contrast ratio are measured and compared by varying the dye concentration. Results show that the films with dye concentration of 4.0 mg/mL have the best performances. Demos of reflective displays based on optimized dye-coated PSBCLC films are demonstrated and the mechanism is illustrated. The dye-coated PSBCLC films have potential applications in reflective displays.
