Abstract:A new transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) based on patterned polarizer using photoalignment technique has been proposed. It consists of two optical modes: optically compensated bend (OCB) and low twist nernatic modes, which have the same cell gap. Since no double cell gap structure is included in the configuration, the fabrication process could be simpler compared with conventional double cell gap transflective LCD. With the help of photoalignment technique, patterned polarizer could be obtained and domains for OCB mode and low twist nematic mode could be formed. Based on this new configuration, a transflective LCD with high brightness and high contrast could be achieved.

Abstract:An achromatic ferroelectric liquid crystal display based on the configuration of double parallel-aligned cells with contrast ratio up to more than 200:1 has been predicted in simulation. A proto type of such display based on the simulation has been fabricated using photoalignment technology. Under the new double layer structure, a ferroelectric liquid crystal display with high black-to-white contrast ratio and wide viewing angle is obtained for both Transmissive and reflective modes.

Abstract:A high-contrast, fast-response, and polarizer-free reflective display using a dye-doped dual-frequency liquid crystal gel is demonstrated. The high contrast ratio originates from the combination of light scattering from the microdomain polymer gel and absorption from the black dyes. The fast response is due to the frequency modulation of the dual-frequency liquid crystal.

Abstract:The realization of multifunctional advanced displays with better electro-optical properties is especially crucial at present. However, conventional integral full drive-based transparent display is increasingly failing to meet the demands of the day. Herein, partitioned polymerization as a novel preparation method was introduced innovatively into polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) for realizing a step-driven display in agreement with fluorescent dye to solve the above drawback. At first, the utilization of fluorescent dye to endow the PDLC film with fluorescent properties resulted in a reduction in the saturation voltage of the PDLC from 39.7 V to 25.5 V and an increase in the contrast ratio from 58.4 to 96.6. Meanwhile, the experimental observations and theoretical considerations have elucidated that variation in microscopic pore size can significantly influence the electro-optical behavior of PDLC. Then, the step-driven PDLC film was fabricated through the exposure of different regions of the LC cell to different UV-light intensities, resulting in stepwise voltage-transmittance (V-T) responses of the PDLC film for the corresponding regions. Consequently, under appropriate driving voltages, the PDLC can realize three different states of total scattering, semi-transparent and total transparent, respectively. In addition, the PDLC film also embodied an outstanding anti-aging property and UV-shielding performance, which makes it fascinating for multifunctional advanced display applications.

Abstract:Due to the switchability between transparent and light-scattering states, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) are widely used as smart windows, flexible display devices, projectors and other devices. In this work, we propose a new composite system containing TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), liquid crystals and polymer that have low driving voltage, high contrast ratio (CR) and quick response ability. Distinguishing from the traditional PDLC system, the coexisting structure of vertically oriented polymer fibres (VOPFs) inside the porous polymer matrix was constructed and the TiO2 nanoparticle (NP) after functionalisation was introduced. It was found that the introduction of an appropriate amount of functionalised TiO2 NPs can effectively improve the electro-optical properties of the composite system. This new system provides a new idea for solving the compatibility problem of inorganic particles and organic matter.

Abstract:Reflective twisted nematic displays where the output polarizer is eliminated are analyzed and demonstrated. The absence of the rear output polarizer has many advantages, including much higher brightness and higher resolution. In this article, we examine the solution space for the design of such reflective displays. Both the cases of a simple reflective display and the use of a retardation film within the display to compensate for color dispersion are explored. It is shown that excellent black and white displays can be obtained using film compensation. Experimentally, over 90% reflectance from a compensated reflective display has been obtained with low color dispersion. The optical response of this reflective display was also found to be quite fast and suitable for video rate applications.

Abstract:There are a series of polyimide material synthesized and studied with different dianhydride and diamine structures. By exploring the structural variations of these materials and their surface energy characteristics, we successfully obtained ferroelectric liquid crystal devices exhibiting exceptional optical and electrical properties. Notably, our findings highlight that a specific polyimide material comprised of dianhydride with a benzene ring structure and diamine with a long-chain amino structure demonstrates remarkable achievements, including a maximum contrast of 872 and a rapid response speed of less than 0.1 ms. These results establish the superiority of this particular polyimide material over its commercially available counterparts. Additionally, the optical characteristics of various polyimide materials were examined by establishing a correlation between these properties and the surface energy of the materials. This research presents a novel approach to developing alignment materials suitable for ferroelectric liquid crystal applications. The implications of our findings are of great significance in driving advancements in field-sequential-color display devices with high pixels per inch in the ferroelectric liquid crystal field.

Abstract:The unique phase-separated microstructure has endowed polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) with outstanding electro-optical performances. However, their applications are hampered by the high driving voltage and low contrast ratio. Attempts to optimize the materials have been made in order to reduce the driving voltage without sacrificing the contrast ratio and other features. Herein, acrylate monomers with different steric end groups were introduced to fabricate PDLCs and their effects on the electro-optical properties and microstructure were investigated. Bipolar droplet configuration was observed in all samples implying tangential anchoring conditions. It was found that the steric end group could affect the morphology of polymer matrix and the electro-optical properties. By carefully adjusting the steric group and doping concentration, the contrast ratio could be enhanced and the driving voltage could be reduced. Besides, hysteresis could also be decreased. The research offers more choices for the construction of PDLCs from material perspective, promoting their potential applications.

Abstract:Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) are composite materials which usually obtained by the phase separation during polymerization of liquid crystal/monomer mixtures, and it have shown potential applications in smart windows. In this work, the rigidity and flexibility of phenyl acrylate monomers were regulated by varying the number of benzene rings and the influences on the morphology and electro-optical properties of PDLC were discussed. The results showed that the PDLC films formed by monomers with one benzene ring possessed better performance. In addition, fluorination of monomers with a benzene ring could further enhance overall performance. The CR was significantly improved from 138 to 175, but the driving voltage is maintained at a lower value (6.9 V). This work provides a choice for optimizing electro-optical properties of PDLC films.

Abstract:Multiple-color reflectors using bichiral liquid crystal polymer films (BLCPFs) are investigated. The BLCPFs consist of alternate layers of two different single-pitch cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) layers, named CLC#A and CLC#B. The thickness of each CLC layer equals its single pitch length. The optical properties in terms of reflections, reflection-wavelength ranges, and distributions of reflection spectra of the BLCPFs that result from the fixed pitch length of CLC#A along with the decrease of the pitch length of CLC#B are qualitatively simulated and investigated. The results indicate that the above optical properties of the BLCPFs depend on the LC birefringence and pitch lengths of CLC#A and CLC#B layers. The concept of fabrication method of the BLCPFs by using polymerizable CLCs and thin films of poly(vinylalcohol) or photoalignment materials is discussed. They have potential practical applications in functional color filters, asymmetrical transmission systems, etc., owing to the multiple reflection bands of BLCPFs. Moreover, the BLCPFs, which can enhance the color gamut and light-utilization efficiency of light sources/LC displays, are reported herein.

Abstract:Currently, thin polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films used in display applications have rarely been studied because the contrast ratio (CR) considerably decreases with decreasing thickness. Herein, the refractive index of the polymer matrix (n(p)) is adjusted by introducing bromine atoms and benzene rings into the acrylate, and the on-state transmittance is enhanced by improving the matching degree between n(p) and the ordinary refractive index of the liquid crystal. Simultaneously, the dissimilarity between n(p) and the average refractive index of LC is also elevated, which increases off-state scattering. This ultimately results in a 123 % increase in CR. Appropriate np also broadens the viewing angle. In addition, further introduction of the methyl group on the acrylate monomer significantly increases the polymer pore size, resulting in a voltage reduction of 52 %. This study provides a new approach for enhancing the CR of PDLC films, expanding their potential applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a reflective liquid crystal display (LCD) combined with thermochromic liquid crystal microcapsules to enhance the electro-optical performance of the LCD and to empower new driving modes. The prepared reflectance-enhanced liquid crystal display (Re-LCD) possesses a bilayer structure, with the upper layer being a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal layer prepared by UV-induced phase separation and the lower layer being a thermochromic layer prepared by coating with thermochromic liquid crystal microcapsules. The effect of chiral compound content on the reflection wavelength of liquid crystal center was investigated. After that, the effects of monomer ratio, polymerization time and spin coating speed on the electro-optical properties and morphology of Re-LCD were investigated comprehensively by three sets of experiments. The results show that the combination of LCD and thermochromic materials has a synergistic effect in display, and the prepared Re-LCD shows more than 51% reflectance compared with typical LCD. The multi-field driving function allows the Re-LCD to rapidly switch optical states by force, electric, and temperature fields and obtain multi-color patterns during the driving process. This provides new application possibilities for LCD.

Abstract:In this paper, by using a novel polymer network and an ion-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy, we successfully fabricated a bistable polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) thin film by the optically-induced polymerization of acrylate monomers followed by the thermal curing of epoxy groups. The stepwise processes not only enable an enhancement in the mechanical properties of PDLC films but also a stabilization of cholesteric textures by polymer networks. The bistable memory effects came from the anchoring properties of polymer networks formed within the microdroplets of PDLCs. The devices prepared from the films can be reversibly switched between a transparent state and an opaque state by an electric field. When the electric field is removed, the states are retained. Therefore, the devices are highly energy efficient.

Abstract:In this article, we demonstrate a novel design of liquid crystal (LC) displays via predesigned radially constructed polydopamine (PDA) particles. The synthesized PDA particles were modified with dimethyloctadecyl‐3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl ammonium chloride (DMOAP) showing radial constructions. Both PDA particles and surface‐modified PDA particles were used to disturb the order of the LC arrangement, showing an opaque appearance. Based on the results, the radially constructed PDA particles efficiently enhanced the performance of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) devices. Adding 0.1 wt% DMOAP‐modified PDA particles into the CLC device shows a higher contrast of 82.2%, a lower threshold voltage of 2.4 V and a fast response time of 7.7 ms. Without adding polymer beads, no any display contrast was observed. The results suggest that the synthesized surface‐modified PDA particles disturb the alignment of LCs dispersed in LC cells, leading to a great improvement in the contrast of the CLC devices. In addition, a prepared traditional polymer stabilized CLC (PSCLC) cell shows only 2.8% contrast. The best performance, with a high contrast of 93.8%, a low threshold voltage of 10.4 V and a fast response time of 10.2 ms, was achieved by adding 0.1 wt% modified PDA particles into the CLC device.

Abstract:Acrylate monomers with different alkyl chain structure were applied to prepare polymer dispersed liquid crystals films and the electro‐optical performance and microstructure were compared. By balancing the alkyl chain length, branched chains and isomeric structure, low driving voltage and high contrast ratio can be achieved. The transparent and opaque states can work effectively to show or block the background picture. Polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have shown great potential in applications, such as displays and smart windows. However, the driving voltage and contrast ratio are still far from requirement. In this work, acrylate monomers with different alkyl chains were applied to prepare PDLC films. Then the electro‐optical performance and microstructure were characterized and compared. Results show that the contrast ratio can be improved by nearly 50% through adjusting the alkyl chain length. Meanwhile, the slightly increased driving voltages can be compensated by introducing branched chains. Contrarily, isomeric structure with more branched chains but short chain length would not contribute much. The chain structure can affect the phase separation process and furtherly the interaction between polymer matrix and liquid crystal droplets. Finally, an optimized PDLC film with high contrast ratio over 100 was demonstrated, which showed two distinct states: highly transparent state with transmittance over 87% at a 0.52 V μm−1 electric field and strong scattering state with transmittance less than 1% in the absence of an electric field. It is anticipated that the research can provide more design choices from material perspective and pave the way for further industrial utilizations of PDLC films.

Abstract:A wavelength-selective, two-stage polymerization of acrylate-thiol for the formation of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films is developed. Via this method, the PDLC with microsphere polymer morphology was successfully prepared, which greatly improved the contrast ratio (CR) and adhesion without causing other performance degradation. The change of morphology from the porous to the microsphere structure could be controlled by adjusting the reaction time of the Michael addition reaction. Furthermore, the size and uniformity of the microsphere structure could be controlled by tuning the content of the free radical initiator. This work is expected to provide an effective method to control the microstructure of acrylate-thiol polymers in solution polymerization, and can possibly allow the fabrication of PDLCs with high CR and adhesion, which is of great significance in large, flexible displays, switchable windows, and light valves.

Abstract:Patterning display has crucial applications in numerous fields. However, the development of traditional patterning technology was restricted by the complexity and high cost. Herein, bicomponent nanofibers as a novel patterning media were innovatively introduced into polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) film for realizing light-controlled patterned displays in concert with dyes to solve above drawbacks. The utilization of nanofibers played a pivotal role in designing patterns and enabling fine dispersion of nanoparticles and fluorescent dye. Experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of different compositions and conditions on the electro-optical performance of PDLC film. The experimental observations and theoretical considerations of dependence between the micro-morphology and the electro-optical properties of PDLC film also had been elucidated. It was discovered that the electro-optical behavior of PDLC film can be remarkably altered by changing the monomer ratios, liquid crystal content, dye concentration and nanofiber. Besides, by analyzing the variation of the polymer mesh size, the microscopic mechanisms that induced changes in the electro-optical performance of PDLC film were further clarified. Optimization based on the above, in order to obtain PDLC films with multi-color patterned display, partial electrospinning process was performed with the aid of simple covering to form patterns in the film morphology. Meanwhile, colorful backing modulation was achieved using blue and green anthraquinone dyes. With the above adjustment, the electro-optical display behavior of PDLC film can be effectively modulated. Additionally, the PDLC film embodied better mechanical performance and anti-aging property, which makes it promising for various display applications.

Abstract:Reflective twisted nematic liquid crystal displays consisting of just one input polarizer, a liquid crystal cell, and a rear reflector are discussed. We first show that all such display modes reported in the literature can be depicted systematically in a series of parameter space diagrams. Then by making use of such diagrams as a guide, we show that other new high quality reflective display modes can be obtained. The three parameters that are varied are the input polarizer angle α, the liquid crystal twist angle φ, and the cell gap–liquid crystal birefringence product dΔn. A full numerical simulation which takes into account of the liquid crystal director deformation under the application of an electric field was used to optimize such displays. Experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:As a type of smart dimming film, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) show great prospects in the fields of indoor partition, electronic curtains, and automobile windows. However, its high off-axis haze greatly impacts the application scope. This obvious shortcoming is mainly caused by the serious mismatch between the effective refractive index of the liquid crystal (n(eff)) and the refractive index of the polymer matrix (n(p)) at large viewing angles. Thereby, factors affecting the viewing angle of a PDLC film are analyzed in this research, including the birefringence of the liquid crystal (Delta n), film thickness, and the refractive index of the polymer matrix (n(p)). Balanced electro-optical properties are guaranteed simultaneously. It is found that high on-state transmittance and low off-axis haze can be achieved at large viewing angles in the suggested optimized case where Delta n is within the range of 0.1-0.13; the film thickness is between 20 mu m and 15 mu m; and n(p) approaches no but the difference does not exceed 0.03.
