Abstract:The observation of optical phase conjugation utilizing the intrinsic Kerr-like nonlinear susceptibilities of two soluble polydiacetylenes is reported. Phase conjugate reflectivities of up to 40% were observed on a timescale of ≲100 ps and a value of χ(3)xyyx =7×10−12 esu evaluated.

Abstract:The nonlinear mechanisms for picosecond degenerate four-wave mixing in organic dyes are reviewed and a theoretical description is given. Nonresonant and resonant electronic Kerr effects, saturable absorption and thermally induced refractive index changes are discussed. Experimental studies on a large number of samples are shown and the nonlinear mechanism for each is assessed. In both infrared absorbing dyes (BDN, A9860, S501) and several tetraphenyl porphyrins the dominating mechanism is determined to be thermal in origin. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found in most cases.

Abstract:Optical bistability is reported at 514 nm using a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with a polydiacetylene/toluene solution or a polydiacetylene/ polyvinylchloride film. Swithch-up powers of less than 4 mW are observed. The nature of the nonlinearity is a thermally induced refractive index change. Simultaneous degenerate four-wave mixing shows corresponding bistable behaviour of the phase conjugate signal.

Abstract:Degenerate four wave mixing of light at 1.055 mu m guided in poly(4,6-decadiyne-1,10 diol bis(n- butoxycarbonylmethylurethane)) planar waveguides has been observed. Diffraction efficiencies of up to 24% have been obtained, with a laser peak power of 2 W. Approximately 50% of the nonlinear mechanism can be attributed to the ultrafast molecular hyperpolarisability of the polymer.<>

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity at a wavelength of 1.064 μm has been studied in a range of soluble conjugated organic polymers using the technique of degenerate forward four-wave mixing. This technique enables determination of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility | χ (3) | of the material. In all cases, determination of the response time of the material nonlinearity is limited by the experimental resolution (≈ 70 ps). Measurements of | χ (3) | as a function of polymer solution concentration were performed and contributions from both real and imaginary components were observed and estimated. The origin of the imaginary contribution in these ‘off-resonant’ conditions was investigated by intensity-dependent measurements of the four-wave mixing signal. In solutions of poly-3 and -4(butoxycarbonylmethylurethane diacetylene), (BCMU) in both chloroform and chlorobenzene, a dependence characteristic of a fifth-order nonlinear interaction is observed. Furthermore, in chloroform solutions of poly(3-butylthiophene) a seventh-order nonlinearity is observed. These high-order nonlinearities are associated with two-photon and three-photon resonant enhancement of the four-photon process and are characterized by fifth- and seventh-order susceptibilities, χ (5) and χ (7) respectively. The presence of imaginary contributions to the optical nonlinearity in all materials investigated implies that this nonlinearity is dominated in all cases by the nearest resonance. This conclusions renders redundant such simplistic models as the free-electron model.

Abstract:The ground-and the excited-state nonlinearities of two new copolymers are investigated in nanosecond scale at 1064 nm. It is found that the excited-state susceptibility is dramatically larger than the corresponding groundstate susceptibility for each sample. The experimental results also give evidence that superlattice structure of the copolymers can enhance, especially for the excited state, the molecular hyperpolarizabilities significantly. This enhancement may be attributed to the confinement effect of the pump-induced carriers.

Abstract:An analytical expression for the efficiency of phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) due to the optically induced molecular reorientation in nematic liquid crystals (NLC) was given. By examining the dependence of the phase conjugation on the angle between the pump beam and the probe beams, and on the angle between the plane of the accident beams and the nematic director, the behavior and physical origin of this kind of phase conjugation were discussed. The roles of other factors such as the optical path, light propagating velocity and light intensity were introduced.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers, for example polydiacetylenes and polythiophenes, possess a relatively large nonlinear refractive index together with an ultrafast relaxation time of this nonlinearity. In the infrared wavelength regions interesting for optical communication they show enhanced response due to multi-photon resonances. By comparing optically similar, but chemically different materials qualitative structure-properties relations can be derived with a view to improving the material response. Using conventional thin film deposition techniques known from microelectronics optical waveguiding structures can be fabricated, leading to the development of polymeric all- optical switching devices.

Abstract:A photo-crosslinked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone, p-nitroaniline as the chromophore and cinnamyl group as the photo-sensitizer. The characterization of the polymer was made by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-vis, and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. An electro-optic film was obtained by spin coating of the polymer and corona poling then photo-crosslinking reaction. An external electro-optic measurement system was established based on the film and reflective light path configuration, and successfully applied to measure the electrical signals propagating on the under-test circuits. The poled and crosslinked film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. The measuring principle was analyzed by electro-optic tensor matrix and index ellipsoid methods. The results showed that the designed polymer film had the linear electro-optic effect, the voltage sensitivity of the system was measured to be 5 mv/ at the condition of 1 kHz input signal. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract:In this paper, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser's phase conjugation has been investigated experimentally using resonant degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM). The iodine solution was used as resonant medium. In this way, the energy of the DFWM phase conjugation beam arrived at 43muJ/pulse while the total pump beam's energy reached 8mJ/pulse. The relation between the pulse energy of the DFWM phase conjugation beam and that of the pump beam was investigated. We also measured the optical field distributions of pump beam and DFWM phase conjugation beam, from which it can be noticed that the DFWM phase conjugation can improve the laser beam quality. At the same time, we observed the influence of the pump beam's disturbance on the DFWM signal.

Abstract:Azo dye polymeric film were widely studied for real-time polarization holography and optical storage by degenerate four-wave mixing in the resonant absorption spectrum of the sample in the few past years. In this paper, we will report the experimental results of four-wave mixing based on excited-state absorption in ethyl orange doped in polyvinyl alcohol film. A He-Ne laser was used as the four-wave mixing source, and the excited light was an Ar+ beam. To explain the experimental results, a simplex four-level model of azo molecule polymeric system is built up. The dynamic process of phase conjugation signal by excited-state four- wave mixing is calculated through solving the rate equation of population in the excited-state. The theoretical analyses agree with the experimental results well. Abstract:The nonlinear optical response of the liquid crystalline multiarm star-shaped azodendrimer was investigated in picosecond pulse and CW regimes at 532 nm. The polymer exhibited large nonlinear refractive coefficient in two regimes (n(2) = -2.88 x 10(-13) cm(2) /W and -1.1 x 10(-10) cm(2) /W under picoseconds pulse excitation, whereas n(2) = -1.4 x 10(-6) cm(2) /W and n(2) = -8.8 x 10(-5) cm(2)/W under CW laser excitation in solution and film, respectively). The mechanism accounting for the process of nonlinear refraction was discussed. Abstract:We have used a Multi-Reference Determinant (MRD) Configuration Interaction (CI) approach, including double excitations within a Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian, to investigate linear polyenes containing from four to sixteen carbons. We have calculated the low-lying excited states, the two-photon absorption spectrum, and the Third Harmonic Generation response. We have analyzed the length dependence of the static third-order Susceptibility, chi(3): an indication of saturation behavior has been found. Focusing our attention on the two-photon resonance peak present in the free-electron laser THG measurements on polyacetylene, we conclude that the experimental data can be explained within a strongly correlated electron model. The Valence Effective Hamiltonian (VEH) method has been extended to calculate nonlinear optical coefficients and has been applied to investigate the static and dynamic third-order polarizabilities in poly(p-phenylene vinylene) and poly(thienylene vinylene). The relation between aromaticity and hyperpolarizability is discussed.

Abstract:Investigations of the optical nonlinearity, by Degenerate Forward Four-wave Mixing at 1.064 μm, in the soluble conjugated polymer poly(3-butylthiophene) are reported. Transient grating response times are limited by the laser pulse width of 70 ps. Measurement of the diffraction efficiency as a function of polymer concentration reveals contributions from both real and imaginary terms. Intensity dependences for concentrations in the range 0.1 – 1.0 g l−1 are found to be characteristics of an eight-photon mixing process, indicating a three-photon resonance enhancement of the nonlinearity. Values of the seventh-order microscopic susceptibilities are calculated.

Abstract:Photorefractive four-wave mixing (FWM) and photoconductivity properties of two new polymers are investigated. One polymer is composed of photoconducting poly(n-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), photosensitizing 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF), and optically nonlinear 4-(dicyanovinyl)-N.N-diethylaniline (DCVDEA). Its FWM diffraction efficiency and response time as a function of, respectively, electric field and writing intensity have been determined. With an 80 micrometer thick film, a FWM diffraction efficiency of 7.4 by 10-4 has been obtained. The response time of the polymer is as short as 400 ms at a writing intensity of 0.17 W/cm2. Another polymer is composed of PVK, TNF, and 4-N,N-demethyl- 4'-nitrostilbene (DANS). Its photoconductivity and photocarrier generation efficiency have been determined experimentally at different electric fields and wavelengths.

Abstract:We study phase conjugation in a nonlinear composite slab when the counter propagating pump waves are completely absorbed by means of coherent perfect absorption. Under the undepleted pump approximation the coupling constant and the phase conjugated reflectivity are shown to undergo a substantial increase and multivalued response. The effect can be used for efficient switching of the phase conjugated reflectivity in photonic circuits.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical properties and the ultrafast dynamics for the polymers with the donor–acceptor structure were measured by the femtosecond laser spectroscopic techniques. Two polymers show intense two-photon absorption properties due to the unique tribranched structure. The ultrafast dynamics of the excited states were measured by two-color femtosecond pump–probe method, and the relaxation properties of the fluorescence emission state were detected by time-resolved fluorescence (TRFL) technique. We suggest that the fast decay component in the TRFL dynamics comes from the exciton migration process, and the slow decay component is caused by the recombination process of the excitons. In two-color femtosecond pump–probe and TRFL dynamics, both decay processes were accelerated when the solvent was changed from CHCl3 to DMSO, due to the fact that the dipole moment of DMSO is larger than that of CHCl3.
