Abstract:A saponin-based nonionic surfactant was obtained from the Allium plant through a series of procedures, including ultrasonic extraction, purification, and characterization by revelant analyses. The investigation encompassed a surface tension test to identify the exact concentration at which the surfactant reached its critical micelle concentration (CMC). The research involved a series of experiments, including interfacial tension (IFT), contact angle, and oil recovery assessments, employing an optimized fluid flooding approach within a carbonate plug. The study also aimed to evaluate the surfactant’s ability to generate foam and establish stable emulsions at both micro and macroscales. The findings revealed a substantial decrease in the IFT to a minimum of 0.42 mN/m when the surfactant concentration reached 2000 ppm. Furthermore, with optimized salinity, the IFT decreased to a minimum of 0.19 mN/m, highlighting the significant role of salinity in reducing IFT. Moreover, under conditions of optimal alkalinity, the IFT reached an even lower level of 0.04 mN/m, demonstrating the synergistic effect of alkalinity alongside surfactant concentration in achieving superior IFT reduction. The surfactant also significantly improved the wettability, reducing the contact angle from 130.2 to 36.72°, effectively promoting a water-wet state. Additional surfactant properties were assessed in the context of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Experimental findings indicated that the surfactant exhibited excellent emulsion stability for 25 weeks at its CMC. Furthermore, the foam generated with this surfactant displayed remarkable stability, with a substantial half-life of 23 min. In a flooding experiment conducted under optimal conditions, where the surfactant solution was at its CMC and salinity and alkalinity levels were optimized, a notable 19.16% increase in crude oil recovery was achieved. The central objective of this research is to develop a novel surfactant derived from natural sources and assess its effectiveness as a valuable agent in oil recovery operations.
