Abstract:Flow property of particles is one key factor in influencing the co-utilization of biomass and coal in an entrained flow gasifier. In this paper, the flow properties of the blended particles of rice straw and coal were systematically studied. The results showed that Hausner ratio cannot indicate flow ability of the blends because of the particle segregation during shaking. Both the tangent of the angle of internal friction and α (the mean value of the angle of internal friction and angle of repose) of the blends display a linear increase with the mass fraction of rice straw, and their increments are almost the same. Moreover, the influence of particle shape of rice straw particles on both two kinds of angles was also found by introducing an orientation revision parameter, and the detailed expressions were also obtained. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This study investigated the combustion characteristics and kinetics of sewage sludge (SS), wheat straw (WS) and their blends using thermogravimetric analysis, under air condition. Combustion characteristic parameters of SS blended with 5%-50% WS was enhanced, especially revealed by an increase in comprehensive combustion index. A significant synergetic interaction was found in high temperature region through experiments. When proportion of WS was 50%, the synergetic interaction was strongest. And the catalytic effect of alkali metal oxides in WS ash on the combustion of SS residues at high temperature region had a strong effect on synergetic interaction. Metal oxides circulated in different oxide forms to transport oxygen to carbon surface, leading to catalytic effect. Activation energy was evaluated by two isoconversional method: Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Vyazovkin method. The lowest average activation energies of the blends were obtained at 50% wheat straw blending ratio (89.29 kJ/mol by FWO and 87.48 kJ/mol by V, respectively). The thermodynamic parameters (Gibbs free energy, Entropy and Enthalpy) were also obtained. And two master plots methods were utilized to determine the appropriate fit kinetic model of combustion which can be described by Avarami-Erofeve (A2).
Thermogravimetric Assessment and Differential Thermal Analysis of Blended Fuels of Coal, Biomass and Oil Sludge

Abstract:The coupled combustion of biomass and organic solid wastes including oil sludge has attracted much attention. Although the optimal mixing ratio of different coal types and biomass has been extensively studied, little attention has been paid to oil sludge that has undergone co-combustion. In this study, the combustion characteristics of blended fuel for coal, biomass and oil sludge under different mixing ratios are studied via a thermogravimetric test and differential thermal analysis. Kinetic analysis of tri-fuel is performed using the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) and Dolye methods. The results show that the bituminous coal combustion process mainly involves the combustion of fixed carbon (236.0–382.0 °C). Wood pellet combustion (383.0–610.0 °C) has two processes involving the combustion of compound carbon and fixed carbon. Blending wood pellets effectively enhances combustion efficiency. Wood pellets from Korla (KOL) have the most obvious effect on reducing the ignition temperature. The blending combustion of bituminous coal (SC), wood pellets from Hutubi (HTB) and oil sludge (OS) have significant synergistic effects. As the OS mixing ratio increases from 10% to 20% with 45% HTB, Ti and Th decrease from 354.9 and 514.3 °C to 269.8 and 452.7 °C, respectively. In addition, f(α) is [−ln(1 − α)]2 for tri-fuel in most mixing ratios when α < 0.5, while f(α) becomes [−ln(1 − α)]3 at α > 0.5. At a high-HTB-level mixing ratio, increasing the OS content causes a decrease in activation energy to 35.87 kJ mol−1. The moderate blending of oil sludge improves the pre-finger factor and the combustion performance.

Abstract:A Eulerian-Lagrangian CFD model is utilized to investigate the effects of three different factors on biomass entrained-flow gasification, including the gasifying medium, reactor structure, and feedstock properties. For gasifying medium, O-2, CO2, steam, and a blend of steam and CO2 are used. Results show that the introduction of O-2 improves the CO production and carbon conversion but an excessive use leads to a decline in combustible gas yield, steam decomposition and cold gas efficiency. Introducing CO2 raises the CO yield, carbon conversion and cold gas efficiency but reduces the steam decomposition. Moreover, the H-2 production, carbon conversion and lower heating value rise while the steam decomposition declines with steam addition. Besides, steam-CO2 composite gasification is better than both pure CO2 gasification and steam gasification in syngas yield, carbon conversion and lower heating value but worse in steam decomposition. Regarding reactor structure, enlarging the biomass inlet has little effect on the product gas yield but accelerates the pyrolysis process. Keeping the biomass inlet away from the gasifier axis improves the combustible gas yield and conversion efficiencies. Finally, for feedstock properties, the biomasses with a higher volatile or fixed carbon content and a lower moisture content generate a high combustible gas yield. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this study, the co-combustion characteristics of coal and biomass blends (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 wt%) were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. All the samples were operated under an oxidative atmosphere, with a heating rate of 20 C/min. The reaction stages, ignition and burnout temperature, maximum weight loss rate, and different combustion indices were determined. When the percentage of biomass in the blends was increased, the maximum mass loss rate was enhanced in the second region, and the ignition and burnout temperature was lowered, indicating the higher reactivity and better combustion performance of the samples. The comprehensive performance index presented an N shape with the increasing biomass blending ratio. Based on various combustion indices, 20% was an optimum percentage for the co-utilization of coal-biomass blends. A significant promoting interaction was observed between corn straw and rice straw blends, while inhibiting effects occurred between rice husk and coal. The kinetic parameters of the blends were evaluated by the Coats and Redfern method using the n th-order reaction model. The value of activation energy and the pre-exponential factor increased with the decreasing biomass percentage in the blends.

Abstract:Co-firing characteristics of different types of coal (bitumite,lean coal,anthracite) and biomass (rice husks) blends were studied using thermogravimetric analyzer.The influence of the combustion atmosphere (O2/CO2 O2/N2),bio-blending ratio and oxygen concentration on ignition temperature,burnout temperature,comprehensive combustion characteristics and kinetic property of the blends were investigated.The results show that,the mass loss rate trend of the blends in O2/N2 atmosphere was similar to that in O2/CO2 atmosphere,but in O2/CO2 atmosphere,the weight loss rate of the blends was faster,the activation energy of the fixed carbon was higher,and the comprehensive combustion characteristic index was lower.Co-firing with biomass could improve the combustion characteristics of pure coal.Compared with burning coal only,the ignition and burnout temperature of the coalbiomass blends decreased,indicating the combustion characteristics of the coal were enhanced.With the increasing bio-blending ratio,the co-combustion performance was improved further.By increasing the oxygen concentration,the co-combustion rate speeded up,the ignition and burnout temperature declined,and the comprehensive combustion characteristics became better.However,in the fixed carbon combustion stage,the activation energy and pre-exponential factor of the combustion reaction increased.Near the temperature corresponding to the maximum buming rate of fixed carbon,the activation energy of the co-combustion was lower than that of the only-coal combustion,and with the increasing proportion ofbiomass,the activation energy of the blended fuel reduced.

Abstract:A numerical investigation was conducted on co-firing biomass and coal under oxy-fuel condition with the refined combustion model. The effects of gas-phase reactions caused by various volatiles of coal and biomass were considered. The influences of biomass fraction and combustion atmosphere on the reaction rate of volatile, the distribution of wall heat flux, and the burnout behavior were analyzed. The results show that the reaction is more active for the volatile of Paulownia wood chips than that of coal. The average wall heat flux suffers a decline when the combustion atmosphere is switched from air to oxy-fuel condition, while the O-2 fraction is 24%. The wall heat flux of hopper rises by 29.97% to 162.7% as the biomass fraction increases from 10% to 30% under various atmospheres. Due to the variation in trajectories of fuel particles and the change of temperature within the furnace, the combustion atmosphere and the biomass share fraction affect the burnout performance to some extent. The working performances of all cases were evaluated, and the optimal operation conditions for co-firing different co-firing scenarios were recommended.

Abstract:This paper reports a combined experimental and numerical investigation of the pyrolysis characteristics of coal, biomass, and coal-biomass blends. Coal and straw were grounded and pressed into spherical particles with diameter of 8 mm, and blended coal-straw particles were prepared through mixing pulverized coal and straw before pressed into particles. Sample particles were suspended in the center of a single-particle reactor system and devolatilized under different temperatures. The analysis of the time history of the residual mass of particles of coal, straw, and coal-straw blends suggested an absence of synergistic effect between the coal and the straw. In addition, a one-dimensional, time-dependent particle model; based on the chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) and bio-CPD models; was developed to simulate the pyrolysis of coal and straw particles. The model predictions agree will with the measured data. An extended CPD model was proposed to explain the co-pyrolysis characteristics of coal-biomass blends. Encouraging agreement was found between the predicted and the experimental results of pyrolysis of coal-straw blends. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, the co-firing of biomass and coal in an oxy-fuel bubbling fluidized bed combustor is numerically explored using a multiphase particle-in-cell reactive model. After model validation, the complex in-furnace phenomena and thermochemical properties are thoroughly studied. The results show that the lateral injection of solid fuels and secondary gas flow results in the non-uniform distributions of gas-solid fluxes and gas products. Segregation makes sand particles concentrate in the bottom region. Particle mass decreases axially, corresponding to the coal in the medium region and biomass in the upper region. Higher oxygen concentration leads to higher gas temperature and lower gas density attributed to the enhanced oxidation reactions. Elevating superficial gas velocity causes a lower gas temperature, higher gas density, lower CO2 and H2O concentrations because of the reduced residence time of gas-solid flow. A larger portion of primary gas flow causes the reduced O2 concentration, increased H2O concentration, but unchanged CO2 concentration in the lower region.

Abstract:The angle of repose of granular materials has been extensively studied, for it is a very important macroscopic parameter in characterizing the flowability of granular materials. The primary objective of the work is to develop a linear model, and to propose a quantitative expression about the angle of repose (Phi(R)) of mixed granular system, which gives a qualitative understanding of the influence of physical parameters on mixed granular flow behavior. The results show that the variation amplitude of tangent Phi(R) is linear with the related particle physical properties (density, particle size and secondary particle mass fraction). It is shown that the most important parameters determining the mixed granular system angle of repose are density variation and surface roughness for the similar particle size. In addition, whether the particle size of base particle material or secondary particle varies or not, the linear relationship always exists. And the slope k is determined primarily by particle shape and surface friction coefficient. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper presents comparative research on the combustion of coal, wheat, corn straw (CS), beet residues after extracting sugar (BR), and their blends, coal–corn straw blends (CCSBs), coal–wheat blends (CWBs), and coal–beet residue blends (CBRBs), using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis under 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 °C/min. The test results indicate that CS and wheat show better combustion properties than BR, which are recommended to be used in biomass combustion. Under the heating rate of 20 °C/min, the coal has the longest thermal reaction time when compared with 10 and 30 °C/min. Adding coal to the biomass can improve the burnout level of biomass materials (BM), reduce the burning speed, and make the reaction more thorough. The authors employed the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) method and the Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS) method to calculate kinetics parameters. It was proven that overall, the FWO method is better than the KAS method for coal, BM, and coal–biomass blends (CBBs), as it provides higher correlations in this study. It is shown that adding coal to wheat and BR decreases the activation energy and makes conversion more stable under particular α. The authors selected a wider range of biomass raw materials, made more kinds of CBB, and conducted more studies on different heating rates. This research can provide useful insights into how to choose agricultural residuals and how to use them.

Abstract:Biomass co-firing within the existing pulverized coal boiler is thought as a practical near-term way of biomass utilization, while its detailed combustion characteristics and pollutant formation have not yet been fully understood. In the present study, we report a Carrier-phase Direct Numerical Simulation study coupled with detailed mechanism to provide a deep insight into the coal/biomass co-firing (CBCF) jet flames under different blending ratios. It is found that compared with the pure coal flame, the CBCF could (i) prompt the volatiles ignition, produce higher H2O and similar CO2 mass fractions at blending ratios of 20% and 40%, and obviously reduce the gas temperature and CO2 mass fraction at the blending ratio of 50%; (ii) prompt the coal devolatilization and char burnout at blending ratios of 20% and 40%, while the char burnout is reduced when blending ratio is 50% due to the local enrichment of large particles and lack of oxygen; (iii) reduce the thermal, prompt, NNH and N2O-intermediate routes of NO formation, but show limited effect on the NO-reburning route of NO destruction, therefore, resulting in an obvious NO reduction.

Abstract:Co-combustion of coal and biomass can reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuel use and enable cleaner energy use. The combustion process of bituminous coal (BC) with three typical biomasses: agricultural waste (Wheat Straw, WS), forest waste (Pine, P), and marine biomass waste (Enteromorpha, EN) was investigated using the TGA and the controlled diffusion mechanism model. When the combustion thermodynamic behavior of the blends was analyzed, it was found that when the proportion of biomass blending increases, the ignition point temperature of its blend with coal decreases and improves the combustion performance of the fuel. WS and P promote combustion of BC/WS and BC/P blends, respectively. EN incorporation gives BC/EN blend a slagging tendency and reduces the burnout of the blend. The kinetic parameters of the three fuel blends were calculated using Coats–Redfern method. The kinetic mechanism analysis shows that the combustion mechanisms of the three biomass-coal blends are in accordance with the diffusion mechanism model, and the activation energy of the blends decreases with the increase in the biomass blending ratio after the temperature increases to 350 °C. After adding biomass its co-combustion with coal has obvious synergistic interactions, in which coal and enteromorpha synergistic effect is the best. The change of activation energy of mixed combustion of coal and biomass is affected by the content of volatiles in biomass. Coal-biomass mixtures can improve bituminous coal combustion. Alkali metals in biomass have an inhibitory effect on co-combustion of the coal-biomass mixture.

Co-firing straw with coal in a swirl-stabilized dual-feed burner: modelling and experimental validation

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling study of co-firing wheat straw with coal in a 150kW swirl-stabilized dual-feed burner flow reactor, in which the pulverized straw particles (mean diameter of 451microm) and coal particles (mean diameter of 110.4microm) are independently fed into the burner through two concentric injection tubes, i.e., the centre and annular tubes, respectively. Multiple simulations are performed, using three meshes, two global reaction mechanisms for homogeneous combustion, two turbulent combustion models, and two models for fuel particle conversion. It is found that for pulverized biomass particles of a few hundred microns in diameter the intra-particle heat and mass transfer is a secondary issue at most in their conversion, and the global four-step mechanism of Jones and Lindstedt may be better used in modelling volatiles combustion. The baseline CFD models show a good agreement with the measured maps of main species in the reactor. The straw particles, less affected by the swirling secondary air jet due to the large fuel/air jet momentum and large particle response time, travels in a nearly straight line and penetrate through the oxygen-lean core zone; whilst the coal particles are significantly affected by secondary air jet and swirled into the oxygen-rich outer radius with increased residence time (in average, 8.1s for coal particles vs. 5.2s for straw particles in the 3m high reactor). Therefore, a remarkable difference in the overall burnout of the two fuels is predicted: about 93% for coal char vs. 73% for straw char. As the conclusion, a reliable modelling methodology for pulverized biomass/coal co-firing and some useful co-firing design considerations are suggested.

Abstract:Combustion with coal is an effective sludge disposal method, but it may weaken the combustion performance of coal. Mixing with biomass can improve the combustion characteristics of the coal-sludge mixture, yet the cocombustion kinetics remain to be studied. The combustion characteristics of sludge, wood chips (WC), and bituminous coal (BC) and their mixtures were investigated by TGA. Mixing 20 wt% sludge reduced the comprehensive combustion characteristic index (S) of BC. However, introducing WC offsets this weakening. The ignition temperature of the mixtures decreased from 430.5 to 274.0 degrees C, and the S indexes increased, indicating that WC enhances the combustibility of the mixtures. The optimum ratio of WC, sludge and BC blended for combustion was determined experimentally, resulting in the best ignition performance and the largest S index. The kinetic model of BC was represented by the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) model. By adding 2-4 wt% WC, the kinetic models of mixtures shifted from JMA to the unimolecular decay law (F1) model and then to the phase boundary-controlled reaction (R3) model at 6 wt% WC content.
Computational Particle Fluid Dynamics Simulation on Combustion Characteristics of Blended Fuels of Coal, Biomass, and Oil Sludge in a 130 T H−1 Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler

Abstract:In this study, the co-combustion of coal and biomass, and the tri-combustion of coal, biomass, and oil sludge in a 130 t h−1 circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler are investigated via the computational particle fluid dynamics (CPFD) approach. Furthermore, the effect of biomass feeding position is also comprehensively evaluated. The results show that for the co-combustion of coal and biomass, the O2 mole fraction at the furnace outlet rises from 0.0541 to 0.0640 as the biomass blending ratio enhances from 40% to 100%, while the CO2 mole fraction reduces from 0.1357 to 0.1267. The mole fraction of NOx and SO2 at the furnace outlet decreases from 4.5867 × 10−5 to 3.9096 × 10−5 and 2.8253 × 10−4 to 4.6635 × 10−5, respectively. For the tri-combustion of three fuels, the average NOx mole fraction initially grows quickly and then declines gradually, ranging from 4.1173 × 10−5 to 4.2556 × 10−5. The mole fraction of SO2 at the furnace outlet increases from 3.5176 × 10−4 to 4.7043 × 10−4 when the ratio of oil sludge rises from 10% to 20%. The uniformity of temperature and gas components distribution is “new inlet > secondary air inlet > feed inlet”. As for the three inlet positions, the mole fractions of NOx at the furnace outlet are between 3.9096 × 10−5 and 5.1537 × 10−5, while those for SO2 are between 2.5978 × 10−4 and 2.5278 × 10−4.

Abstract:In this study, the combustion characteristics of pine needles, pine needle humus, and the co-combustion of these two types of biomass with coal were compared. In addition, the optimization of the combustion performance of coal/humus was assisted through the following studies: (i) the combustion performance of coal/pine needle humus was studied under four different oxygen concentrations (N2, 10%O2/90%N2, 20%O2/80%N2, and 40%O2/60%N2); (ii) the synergistic effect between the humus and coal during combustion was also investigated by adjusting the blending ratio and oxygen content; (iii) the mechanisms of the optimized combustion processes were expounded by kinetics and thermodynamics discussion. The results demonstrated that the combustion characteristics of the coal/humus blends were found to be higher than those of the coal/pine needle blends. The coupling interactions of the oxygen content and blending ratio contributed to the significant synergistic effect between the two fuels, and the synergistic effect showed a nonlinear variation with an increased oxygen concentration. The synergistic effect in a rich oxygen environment (O240%/N260%) is 5.1 times greater than that in the synthetic air (O220%/N280%) and 13.8 times greater than that in the oxygen-poor environment (O210%/N290%). Hence, the blending ratio could be adjusted to maintain the intensity of the synergistic effect in an oxygen-rich atmosphere.

Abstract:The influence of storage time on the flowability of biomass-coal blends is experimental and theoretical investigated. The results show that there exists exponential relationship between discharge rate and storage time in an appropriate rice straw mass fraction range (less than 10%). In addition, the mechanism of gravity discharge rate variation for biomass-coal blends is theoretically investigated by analyzing the porosity variation of particle bed. The mechanism of porosity variation in the binary granular system is theoretically analyzed on the basis of emergent gas, mutual compression and particle rearrangement, and a mathematical model has been developed which agrees well with the experimental results. Furthermore, relaxation effect is proposed, which is mainly induced by elasticity of rice straw particle and cohesion of blends. Relaxation time is the most important parameters determining this effect. The latter decreases with increasing of coal particle size and biomass mass fraction.
