Abstract:The optical properties of the regular, 3-nm-wide hexagonal channels of the mesoporous silica molecular sieve (MCM–41) containing C60 are reported. Besides an intensive photoluminescence response at 642 nm from confined C60, a more intensive photoluminescence at 484 nm has been observed, which is considered to result from the passivation of silica zeolite with C60. Our studies indicate that both the properties of guest and host can be modified due to the interaction at the interface of them.

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) studies have been performed on C60 confined in NiY zeolite. Besides the PL peaks of Ni ions a new peak at 544 nm was observed, which is believed to originate from the trapped C60 within a NiY molecular sieve. From PLE measurements, the transfer of carriers from Ni ions to their adjacent C60 molecules is deemed to be responsible for the PL and its enhancement, PLE, PL and EPR measurements indicate the coordination of Ni ions on C60 molecules in supercages of NiY zeolite.

Abstract:A new C60-polyoxometalate compound was synthesized by a C60 derivative with a {SiW11Mn} cluster connecting through a coordination bond and characterized. The photocurrent response test showed great improvement of this new compound compared to C60 and the polyoxometalate precursor, which could be used as a potential photoelectric material.

Abstract:inserted into a Y zeolitic nanocavity shows anomalous upper-excited fluorescence as well as anionic and normal fluorescence. The intercalation of C-60 into the supercage of the zeolite has been confirmed by measuring Xe-129 NMR spectra while the formation of C-.(60)- has been identified by measuring its ESR spectrum. Time-resolved fluorescence spectra show that the upper-excited fluorescence has the maximum intensity at 450 nm and decays in 28 ps to give birth to the normal fluorescence with the maximum at 750 nm. The normal one decays on the time scale of 1700 ps, while the anionic fluorescence with the maximum intensity at 770 nm has a shorter lifetime of 170 ps.

Abstract:In this contribution, we conceptually present a new avenue to construction of molecular functional materials with high performance of circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the condensed phase. A molecule (1) containing luminogenic silole and chiral sugar moieties was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence emission are observed, but upon molecular aggregation, both the CD and fluorescence are simultaneously turned on, showing aggregation-induced CD (AICD) and emission (AIE) effects. The AICD effect is supported by the fact that the molecules readily assemble into right-handed helical nanoribbons and superhelical ropes when aggregated. The AIE effect boosts the fluorescence quantum efficiency (phi(F)) by 136 fold (phi(F), similar to 0.6% in the solution versus similar to 81.3% in the solid state), which surmounts the serious limitations of aggregation-caused quenching effect encountered by conventional luminescent materials. Time-resolved fluorescence study and theoretical calculation from first principles conclude that restriction of the low-frequency intramolecular motions is responsible for the AIE effect. The helical assemblies of 1 prefer to emit right-handed circularly polarised light and display large CPL dissymmetry factors (g(em)), whose absolute values are in the range of 0.08-0.32 and are two orders of magnitude higher than those of commonly reported organic materials. We demonstrate for the first time the use of a Teflon-based microfluidic technique for fabrication of the fluorescent pattern. This shows the highest g(em) of -0.32 possibly due to the enhanced assembling order in the confined microchannel environment. The CPL performance was preserved after more than half year storage under ambient conditions, revealing the excellent spectral stability. Computational simulation was performed to interpret how the molecules in the aggregates interact with each other at the molecular level. Our designed molecule represents the desired molecular functional material for generating efficient CPL in the solid state, and the current study shows the best results among the reported organic conjugated molecular systems in terms of emission efficiency, dissymmetry factor, and spectral stability.

Abstract:AbstractThe ability to harness charges and spins for control of organic excitonic states is critical in developing high‐performance organic luminophores and optoelectronic devices. Here we report a facile strategy to efficiently manipulate the electronic energy states of various organic phosphors by coupling them with inorganic lanthanide nanocrystals. We show that the metallic atoms exposed on the nanocrystal surface can introduce strong coupling effects to 9‐(4‐ethoxy‐6‐phenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9H‐carbazole (OCzT) and some organic chromophores with carbazole functional groups when the organics are approaching the nanocrystals. This unconventional organic–inorganic hybridization enables a nearly 100 % conversion of the singlet excitation to fast charge transfer luminescence that does not exist in pristine organics, which broadens the utility of organic phosphors in hybrid systems.

Abstract:Strong photoluminescence of sodium-reduced C60 incorporated into interlayers of hydrotalcite is observed. This phenomenon is correlated to the fact that the reduced C60 is positioned between positively charged layers of the anion clay. The interaction between the layers and reduced C60 alters the photophysical properties of C60 and relaxes the electron transition inhibition, thus enhancing photoluminescence.

Abstract:Naturally oxidized freestanding silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) are incorporated in commonly used encapsulating materials to explore the photoluminescent application of Si NCs in device structures such as solid-state lighting light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells. The quantum yield of Si NCs before the incorporation has reached about 45% at the excitation wavelength of 370 nm without any special surface modification. It is found that medium loadings, e.g., 5 wt% of Si NCs in encapsulating materials help to obtain high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the mixtures of Si NCs and encapsulating materials. The curing of encapsulating materials significantly reduces EQE. Among all the encapsulating materials investigated in this work, silicone-OE6551 enables the highest EQE (21% at excitation wavelength λex = 370 nm) after curing. Based on current findings, we have discussed the continuous efforts to advance the photoluminescent application of Si NCs.

Abstract:The strong visible luminescence from C0 molecules embedded in porous Si was observed at room temperature. Besides the characteristics spectrum at 730nm of perfect C60 molecules, we found the PL spectrum from C60 molecules adjacent or coupled to porous Si has peaks at 620nm and 630nm, respectively. The enhancement of photoluminescence from C60 embedded in porous Si is attributed to the carries transferring from porous Si to C60 molecules.

Abstract:High purity single crystal C-60 rods with uniform dimensions are synthesized by a rapid and facile approach which can be completed over a timescale of typically a few minutes. The morphology of the fullerene product has been characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, demonstrating that the resulting materials are solid, hexagonal cross-sectioned rods with novel faceted tips. High resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations reveal that the rods are face-centered cubic packed single crystals. Vibrational and electronic spectroscopy studies provide compelling evidence that the rods are a van der Waals solid since the electronic structure of the component C-60 molecules is largely preserved. The structures obtained are found to possess novel optoelectronic properties exhibiting low energy absorption not reported in related structures and materials to date. Furthermore significant room temperature photoluminescence is obtained from the C-60 rods accompanied by a small blue shift of the spectra which is also observed for the first 'allowed' absorption transitions. Given their rapid synthesis, excellent purity, optical and charge transport properties these fullerene structures are expected to be a promising materials for nanoelectronic devices including thin film organic solar cells and photodetectors.
Photoluminescence From C-60-Coupled Porous Structures Formed On Fe+-Implanted Silicon

Abstract:< 111 >-oriented p-type Si wafer with a resistivity of 1-5 Omega cm was implanted with Fe+ and then annealed at 1100 degrees C in N-2 for 60 min, followed by anodization in a solution of HF to form porous structure with beta-FeSi2 nanocrystallites. Photoluminescence (PL) spectral measurements show that a strong PL peak appears in the range of 610-670 nm. The position of the PL peak remains unchanged, but its intensity increases with the storage time in air until about three months and then saturates. C-60 molecules were chemically coupled on the porous structure through a kind of silane coupling agent to form a nanocomposite. It is revealed that the stable PL peak monotonically shifts to a pinning wavelength at 570 nm. Experimental results from PL, PL excitation, Raman scattering, and x-ray diffraction measurements clearly show that the pinned PL originates from optical transition in C-60-related defect states, whereas the photoexcited carriers occur in the beta-FeSi2 nanocrystallites formed during anodization. This work opens a new way to tailor nanometer environment for seeking optimal luminescent properties.

Abstract:We investigate the modulation of C-60 monolayers on the nanocavity plasmonic (NCP) emission on Au(111) by tunneling electron excitation from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip. STM induced luminescence spectra show not only suppressed emission, but also significant redshift of NCP emission bands on the C-60 molecules relative to the bare metal surface. The redshift, together with the bias- and coverage-dependent emission feature, indicates that the C-60 molecules act beyond a pure dielectric spacer, their electronic states are heavily involved in the inelastic tunneling process for plasmonic emission. A modified quantum cutoff relation is proposed to explain qualitatively the observed emission feature at both bias polarities. We also demonstrate molecularly resolved optical contrast on the C-60 monolayer and discuss the contrast mechanism briefly. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel self-assembled hybrid nanocompound consisting of bismuth sulfide nanocrystals (Bi2S3 NCs) and Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) is used to study the enhancement of photoluminescence by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Ag@SiO2 core-shell NPs were prepared by deposition of silica onto the surface of Ag NPs through the sol-gel method and followed by surface modification via 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane for the coming conjugation with Bi2S3 NCs. We propose the photoluminescence enhancement by the LSPR effect through adjusting the thickness of silica shell and the Ag@SiO2 NP concentration. By modulating the thickness of the silica shell and the concentration of Ag NPs, the maximum enhancement of a 5.7 fold can be reached with the thickness of an SiO2 shell at 22.5 nm. A clear red shift of the emission peaks in the Bi2S3 NCs-Ag@SiO2 NPs hybrid structures is observed. Such a metal-enhanced Bi2S3 quantum dot (QD) fluorescence system may have promising applications in optoelectronic device.

Abstract:The valence band evolution Of C-60 film upon Yb intercalation is investigated by the synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SR-PES) technique. The results show that only Yb2.75C60 forms at lower intercalation stages and imply that other phases of YbxC60 (x > 2.75) form with more Yb atoms intercalated into the Yb2.75C60 sample. No Fermi edge is observed for all the spectral lines in this work, which reveals that the superconducting Yb fulleride, whether it is Yb2.75C60 or other phase, has semiconducting property at room temperature. To extract the intrinsic density of state of the valence band from the Yb 4f-superposed experimental data, the SR-PE spectra were measured for the well-defined phase of Yb2,75C60 with varying photon energies (18.0-45.0 eV). The results show that the spectral data can drastically depart from the density of states of the valence band due to the photoemission of Yb 4f core levels. However, the valence band can, still be quantitatively extracted from the experimental data by the least-square simulation.

Abstract:The first observations of weak room-temperature photoluminescence of a new C-60 derivative: C-60(NH(CHCOOMe)(2)) (1) and its fluorescence quenching by concentration and N,N-dimethyl aniline in CHCl3 solution are reported. Its singlet energy and fluorescence lifetime were estimated to be 40.9 kcal/mol and 1.2 +/- 0.3 ns, respectively.

Abstract:The nanostructured material (NSM) of pure silica MCM-41 molecular sieve was synthesized with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the source of silica and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMABr) as the template under supersonic wave condition. Then NSM of (CH3)3Si–MCM-41 was obtained by introducing trimethylsilyl to MCM-41. (CH3)3Si–MCM-41 showed the similar TEM and XRD photographs with the normal crystal of MCM-41 and the diameter of the NSM crystallites with a hexagon shape is of about 10–40 nm. The dispersivity of (CH3)3Si–MCM-41 prevails over the NSM of MCM-41 as its hydrophobicity. The fluorescent intensity of (CH3)3Si–MCM-41 is 3.4 times as that of the MCM-41. The luminescent functional supramolecular nanostructured material was prepared in EtOH, and characterized by TEM, HRTEM, XRD, TG, IR, and elemental analysis. The results showed that the [Eu(Phen)4](NO3)3 had entered into the channels of nanosized mesoporous sieve of (CH3)3Si–MCM-41, forming discrete centers of luminescence. The energy transferring of the host to guest, superficial effect of NSM, quanta tunnel effect, and discrete luminescent center result in the fluorescent intensity of the supramolecule enhancement.
Optical Emission from C60-molecule-coupled Si Nanocrystallites

Abstract:Using C60 molecule as a kind of surface-passivated agent to modify the electronic structure of Si nanocrystallites in porous silicon, we disclose that this kind of C60/nanocrystalline Si coupling system can show a strong blue emission at approximately 460 nm when stored in air for more than one year. After a full characterization of the photoluminescence properties, we propose a luminescent center in the SiOx layer at the surface of a Si nanocrystallite. It is a pair consisting of an oxygen vacancy and an interstitial oxygen. The interstitial oxygen also forms a peroxy linkage with a neighboring lattice oxygen. Radiative recombination of carriers photogenerated from Si nanocrystallite cores in the luminescent centers results in the observed blue photoluminescence. Neutron irradiation experiments support our assignment of the blue emission mechanism. This work improves the understanding of the origin of blue emission from silicon/oxygen-related nanostructured materials.

Abstract:We report strong visible photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature from BN and Si nanometer-sized particles prepared through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in the pores of zeolite NaY and ZSM-5. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry analyses (TG), and UV–Vis absorption. Analysis of PL spectra leads us to propose that the Si and BN nanometer-sized particles, a kind of quasi-direct-gap semiconductor transferred from indirect-gap materials by encapsulation method, are possible origins of the strong PL.

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) measurements have been performed on the nanocomposites of higher fullerene-coupled porous silicon (PS) nanocrystals. For the C-70/PS and C-76(78)/PS nanocomposites, the PL spectra show a pinning wavelength at similar to 565 nm and for the C-84/PS and C-94/PS nanosystems the pinning. wavelength is at similar to 590 nm. The PL pinning property is closely related to the sorts of the coupled fullerenes. A band mixing model of direct and indirect gaps in a nanometer environment consisting of nc-Si core, SiO2 surface layer, and coupled fullerene has been proposed for calculation of electronic states.
