Abstract:The potential for chemistry occurring in cloud droplets to impact atmospheric composition has been known for some time. However, the lack of direct observations and uncertainty in the magnitude of these reactions led to this area being overlooked in most chemistry transport models. Here we present observations from Mt Schmücke, Germany, of the HO2 radical made alongside a suite of cloud measurements. HO2 concentrations were depleted in-cloud by up to 90% with the rate of heterogeneous loss of HO2 to clouds necessary to bring model and measurements into agreement, demonstrating a dependence on droplet surface area and pH. This provides the first observationally derived assessment for the uptake coefficient of HO2 to cloud droplets and was found to be in good agreement with theoretically derived parameterisations. Global model simulations, including this cloud uptake, showed impacts on the oxidising capacity of the troposphere that depended critically on whether the HO2 uptake leads to production of H2O2 or H2O.

Abstract:The hydroxyl radical (OH) largely controls the tropospheric self-cleansing capacity by reacting with gases harmful to the environment and human health. OH concentrations are determined locally by competing production and loss processes. Lacking strong observational constraints, models differ in how they balance these processes, such that the sign of past and future OH changes is uncertain. In a warmer climate, OH production will increase due to its water vapor dependence, partially offset by faster OH-methane loss. Weather-sensitive emissions will also likely increase, although their net impact on global mean OH depends on the balance between source (nitrogen oxides) and sink (reactive carbon) gases. Lightning activity increases OH, but its response to climate warming is of uncertain sign. To enable confident projections of OH, we recommend efforts to reduce uncertainties in kinetic reactions, in measured and modeled OH, in proxies for past OH concentrations, and in source and sink gas emissions. ▪ OH is strongly modulated by internal climate variability despite its lifetime of a few seconds at most, with implications for interpreting trends in methane. ▪ Improved kinetic constraints on key reactions would strengthen confidence in regional and global OH budgets, and in the response of OH to climate change. ▪ Future OH changes will depend on uncertain and compensating processes involving weather-sensitive chemistry and emissions, plus human choices. ▪ Technological solutions to climate change will likely impact tropospheric oxidizing capacity and merit further study prior to implementation. Abstract:Convective updrafts in thunderstorms prolong the lifetime of ozone (O 3 ) and its anthropogenic precursor NO x [nitric oxide (NO) + nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 )] by carrying these gases rapidly upward from the boundary layer into a regime where the O 3 production efficiency is higher, chemical destruction is slower, and surface deposition is absent. On the other hand, the upper troposphere is relatively rich in O 3 and NO x from natural sources such as downward transport from the stratosphere and lightning; convective overturning conveys the O 3 and NO x toward the Earth's surface where these components are more efficiently removed from the atmosphere. Simulations with a three-dimensional global model suggest that the net result of these counteractive processes is a 20 percent overall reduction in total tropospheric O 3 . However, the net atmospheric oxidation efficiency is enhanced by 10 to 20 percent.

Tropospheric Aqueous-Phase OH Oxidation Chemistry: Current Understanding, Uptake of Highly Oxidized Organics and Its Effects

Abstract:The oxidation budget of the tropospheric gas phase is relatively well known. However, the concentrations and turnover rates of important oxidants such as OH that are present in the tropospheric aqueous phase are considerably more uncertain, as a result of the higher complexity of associated multiphase chemical interactions involved. This chapter outlines (i) the current understanding of the aqueous-phase OH oxidation budget, (ii) recent progress within the field with a focus on the uptake of highly oxidized organics as well as their effects on the oxidation capacity in aqueous aerosols, and (iii) future research objectives. In detail, the first part presents an overview on photochemical OH sinks and sources within the tropospheric aqueous phase, focusing on modelled and measured in-situ formation rates of OH. It also discusses current discrepancies between models and measurements as well as, finally, the limitations of both. In this part, model simulations using CAPRAM are presented. They demonstrate that utilizing a more detailed organic chemistry leads to substantially lowered aqueous-phase OH concentrations, more closely aligning modelled and measured OH concentrations. In the second part, a summary of current state-of-the-art knowledge on the role and fate of organic peroxides, labile hydroperoxides, and other organic peroxy species as potential OH sources is given. Furthermore, recent results of a model case study utilizing CAPRAM are presented, allowing an examination of the uptake and chemistry of highly oxidized organics from the gas phase and its effects. The case study demonstrates that the uptake and subsequent decomposition of labile hydroperoxides may lead to a mean increase of 19% of the aqueous OH sink and source rates. Finally, a brief perspective is given, including an outline of current gaps within the knowledge on the oxidation budget in aqueous aerosols as well as research objectives for future laboratory, field and model investigations.

Abstract:Heterogeneous reactions of mineral dust aerosol with trace gases in the atmosphere could directly and indirectly affect tropospheric oxidation capacity, in addition to aerosol composition and physicochemical properties. In this article we provide a comprehensive and critical review of laboratory studies of heterogeneous uptake of OH, NO3, O-3, and their directly related species as well (including HO2, H2O2, HCHO, HONO, and N2O5) by mineral dust particles. The atmospheric importance of heterogeneous uptake as sinks for these species is assessed (i) by comparing their lifetimes with respect to heterogeneous reactions with mineral dust to lifetimes with respect to other major loss processes and (ii) by discussing relevant field and modeling studies. We have also outlined major open questions and challenges in laboratory studies of heterogeneous uptake by mineral dust and discussed research strategies to address them in order to better understand the effects of heterogeneous reactions with mineral dust on tropospheric oxidation capacity.

Abstract:Global sulfate production plays a key role in aerosol radiative forcing; more than half of this production occurs in clouds. We found that sulfur dioxide oxidation catalyzed by natural transition metal ions is the dominant in-cloud oxidation pathway. The pathway was observed to occur primarily on coarse mineral dust, so the sulfate produced will have a short lifetime and little direct or indirect climatic effect. Taking this into account will lead to large changes in estimates of the magnitude and spatial distribution of aerosol forcing. Therefore, this oxidation pathway—which is currently included in only one of the 12 major global climate models—will have a significant impact on assessments of current and future climate.

Abstract:The growth of aerosol due to the aqueous phase oxidation of sulfur dioxide by ozone was measured in laboratory-generated clouds created in the Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets (CLOUD) chamber at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Experiments were performed at 10 and −10 °C, on acidic (sulfuric acid) and on partially to fully neutralised (ammonium sulfate) seed aerosol. Clouds were generated by performing an adiabatic expansion – pressurising the chamber to 220 hPa above atmospheric pressure, and then rapidly releasing the excess pressure, resulting in a cooling, condensation of water on the aerosol and a cloud lifetime of approximately 6 min. A model was developed to compare the observed aerosol growth with that predicted using oxidation rate constants previously measured in bulk solutions. The model captured the measured aerosol growth very well for experiments performed at 10 and −10 °C, indicating that, in contrast to some previous studies, the oxidation rates of SO2 in a dispersed aqueous system can be well represented by using accepted rate constants, based on bulk measurements. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first laboratory-based measurements of aqueous phase oxidation in a dispersed, super-cooled population of droplets. The measurements are therefore important in confirming that the extrapolation of currently accepted reaction rate constants to temperatures below 0 °C is correct.

Abstract:This study presents the difference between oxidised organic compounds formed by α-pinene oxidation under various conditions in the CLOUD environmental chamber: (1) pure ozonolysis (in the presence of hydrogen as hydroxyl radical (OH) scavenger) and (2) OH oxidation (initiated by nitrous acid (HONO) photolysis by ultraviolet light) in the absence of ozone. We discuss results from three Atmospheric Pressure interface Time-of-Flight (APi-TOF) mass spectrometers measuring simultaneously the composition of naturally charged as well as neutral species (via chemical ionisation with nitrate). Natural chemical ionisation takes place in the CLOUD chamber and organic oxidised compounds form clusters with nitrate, bisulfate, bisulfate/sulfuric acid clusters, ammonium, and dimethylaminium, or get protonated. The results from this study show that this process is selective for various oxidised organic compounds with low molar mass and ions, so that in order to obtain a comprehensive picture of the elemental composition of oxidation products and their clustering behaviour, several instruments must be used. We compare oxidation products containing 10 and 20 carbon atoms and show that highly oxidised organic compounds are formed in the early stages of the oxidation.
The Influence of Cloud Chemical Processes on the Formation of Secondary Particulate Matter

Abstract:As a pre-study for the 3-D-simulation of the hill cap cloud experiment HCCT 2010 the chemistry transport model COSMO-MUSCAT was tested in a 2-D-domain with a bell-shaped hill. The sensitivity of several target species (oxidants, pH, sulphate, organic mass, dicarboxylic acids, O/C-ratio) on the detail of the aqueous phase mechanism was investigated in a polluted urban and a clean continental rural air mass. For the treatment of aqueous phase chemistry the complex mechanism CAPRAM 3.0i in reduced version and the simple inorganic mechanism INORG was used. Differences between both mechanisms occurred for the oxidants which are not treated in INORG (HO2, OH, NO3) and the pH especially in the urban environment where much more organic reaction partners are also present in the aqueous phase. For O3, H2O2 and the overall sulphate mass both mechanisms agree mostly within 5 %. Additionally, the composition of the organic mass has been analysed.

Abstract:The tropospheric oxidation is an important indicator of the cleansing capacity of the atmosphere.Most trace gases emitted into the atmosphere are removed by oxidizing chemical reactions involving ozone and the hydroxyl free radical.The research history of tropospheric OH including the fundamental reactions,measurement techniques and the long-term trend is reviewed in this paper.Due to the increased emissions of CO,NOx(=NO+NO2) and hydrocarbons by human activities,global mean OH concentrations have decreased since pre-industrial times,and the future trend of tropospheric OH still depends on the emissions of CO,NOx(=NO+NO2) and hydrocarbons.Using a 3-D global chemistry and transport model(MOZART),the distributions and trend of tropospheric OH over China and its neighborhood are studied.The results show that,consistent with variations in sunlight and water vapor,the concentrations of tropospheric OH over China increase gradually from winter to summer.In addition,by reason of the various emissions strength of OH precursors or sinks,such as ozone,CO and NOx,the highest concentrations of OH in July arise in North China and Pearl River Delta,while the lowest concentrations occur in those plateau areas in West China. Analysis of the impacts of various emissions of air pollutants on tropospheric OH in East China reveals a significant increase of tropospheric OH as a result of the pronounced increase of NOx emissions in China.Looking to the future,there is urgent need for more observations of tropospheric OH to improve and ultimately validate models and further understand the oxidation processes in our atmosphere.

Abstract:Atmospheric oxidation is an important phenomenon which produces large quantities of low-volatility compounds such as sulfuric acid and oxidized organic compounds. Such species may be involved in the nucleation of particles and enhance their subsequent growth to reach the size of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). In this study, we investigate α-pinene, the most abundant monoterpene globally, and its oxidation products formed through ozonolysis in the Cosmic Leaving OUtdoor Droplets (CLOUD) chamber at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research). By scavenging hydroxyl radicals (OH) with hydrogen (H2), we were able to investigate the formation of highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs) purely driven by ozonolysis and study the oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) driven by stabilized Criegee intermediates (sCIs). We measured the concentrations of HOM and sulfuric acid with a chemical ionization atmospheric-pressure interface time-of-flight (CI-APi-TOF) mass spectrometer and compared the measured concentrations with simulated concentrations calculated with a kinetic model. We found molar yields in the range of 3.5–6.5 % for HOM formation and 22–32 % for the formation of stabilized Criegee intermediates by fitting our model to the measured sulfuric acid concentrations. The simulated time evolution of the ozonolysis products was in good agreement with measured concentrations except that in some of the experiments sulfuric acid formation was faster than simulated. In those experiments the simulated and measured concentrations met when the concentration reached a plateau but the plateau was reached 20–50 min later in the simulations. The results shown here are consistent with the recently published yields for HOM formation from different laboratory experiments. Together with the sCI yields, these results help us to understand atmospheric oxidation processes better and make the reaction parameters more comprehensive for broader use.

Abstract:With the drastic actions initiated by the Chinese authorities to improve air quality, the level of several secondary pollutants including near-surface ozone still has been increasing significantly between years 2013 and 2020, most notably in the Northern China Plain. Alleviating ozone pollution requires a quantitative understanding of the different processes that contribute to the photochemical formation and destruction of secondary species. It also requires that the budget of fast-reacting radicals that are directly involved in photochemical oxidation processes be investigated in detail. Here, we used a modified regional chemical transport model (the WRF-Chem) to analyze the influence of different photochemical processes on the entire geographical area covered by China. This analysis provides a quantitative estimate of the different factors that affect the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere in different regions of the country. Besides that, our model simulations will assess the relative importance of different photochemical processes that contribute to the budget of near-surface ozone in different chemical environments and provide some theoretical considerations on which our analysis is based. This study should support to reduction of ozone and other secondary pollutants in China.
A More Important Role for the Ozone‐S(IV) Oxidation Pathway Due to Decreasing Acidity in Clouds

Abstract:Clouds significantly affect the Earth's radiation budget and play a critical role in atmospheric sulfate formation. The pathways of S(IV) oxidations have recently caused a controversial attention under severe haze episodes due to the variable acidity and water content in aerosol particles. In this study, a total of 158 cloud samples were collected from 2014 to 2018 at the summit of Mt. Tai, China, to explore the roles of atmospheric oxidants in aqueous S(IV) oxidation. The results showed that the averaged pH value of cloud water increased dramatically from 3.86 (Guo et al., 2012, ) in 2007-2008, similar to 5.5 in 2014, to similar to 6.4 in 2018, respectively, while water soluble secondary ions (SO42-, NO(3)(-)and NH4+) and S(IV) decreased significantly. The four pathways of S(IV) oxidation by O-3, H2O2, NO2, and trace metal-catalyzed autooxidation were further discussed, and the roles in S(IV) oxidation pathways were found changing significantly with pH value in clouds. The rate of H2O2 pathway contributed about 95.8% for S(IV) oxidation when pH was less than 4.0. For pH around 5.0, the rate of O(3)pathway became comparable with the H2O2 pathway, and it accounted more than 95.2% for the total S(IV) oxidation rate when pH was larger than 6.0. Based on the long-term field measurement, this study indicated that the high concentration of O-3 and the increasing trend of pH promoted a shift of the dominant S(IV) oxidation from H2O2 pathway in a previous study (Shen et al., 2012, ) to O-3 pathway in clouds.

Abstract:Man-made aerosols are believed to have a strong influence on cloud optical properties and albedo, with a radiative forcing opposite in sign to that exerted by greenhouse gases. Abstract:Aerosol effects on convective clouds and associated precipitation constitute an important open-ended question in climate research. Previous studies have linked an increase in aerosol concentration to a delay in the onset of rain, invigorated clouds and stronger rain rates. Here, using observational data, we show that the aerosol effect on convective clouds shifts from invigoration to suppression with increasing aerosol optical depth. We explain this shift in trend (using a cloud model) as the result of a competition between two types of microphysical processes: cloud-core-based invigorating processes vs. peripheral suppressive processes. We show that the aerosol optical depth value that marks the shift between invigoration and suppression depends on the environmental thermodynamic conditions. Influence of atmospheric oxidation capacity on atmospheric particulate matters concentration in Lanzhou

Abstract:The atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) reflects the removal rate of atmospheric pollutants, and this index is typically characterized by the oxidant concentration or total reaction rate. The AOC plays a crucial role in the formation of atmospheric particulate matters and serves as an important indicator for studying changes in the concentration. In this study, we analyse the characteristics of atmospheric oxidants in Lanzhou based on data in the year of 2020 and 2021 retrieved from the Atmospheric Comprehensive Observation Station in Lanzhou. Empirical equations are applied to estimate the impact of atmospheric oxidative properties secondary generation concentrations of atmospheric particulate matters with different particle sizes. The results indicate that the annual average values of O x were 146 μg/m 3 in 2020 and 139 μg/m 3 in 2021. The AOC was the highest in summer and lowest in winter. The correlation coefficient between O 3 and O x was significantly higher than that between NO 2 and O x , suggesting that O 3 exerted a greater impact on the AOC in Lanzhou. A low AOC (MDA8 O 3 ≤ 100 μg/m 3 ) promoted the oxidation process of VOCs and other precursors, leading to the generation of secondary aerosols and subsequent formation of secondary particles. There were negative correlations between O x and atmospheric particulate matters, secondary inorganic components, sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) and nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR), indicating that excessively high levels of O x could inhibit the conversion rate of SO 2 and NO 2 into their respective forms to a certain extent.
