Abstract:Current air quality models usually underestimate the concentration of ambient air sulfate, but the cause of this underestimation remains unclear. One reason for the underestimation is that the sulfate formation mechanism in the models is incomplete, and does not adequately consider the impact of the synergistic effects of high concentrations of multiple pollutants on sulfate formation. In this work, the roles of gaseous NO2, NH3 and solution ionic strength in the formation of sulfate in the aqueous phase were quantitatively investigated using a glass reactor and a 30 m3 smog chamber, separately. The results showed that sulfate formation was enhanced to different degrees in the presence of gas-phase NO2, NH3 and their coexistence as solutes in both liquid solution and aerosol water. NH3 enhances the aqueous oxidation of SO2 by NO2 mainly by accelerating the uptake of SO2 through increased solubility. More importantly, we found that high ionic strength in aerosol water could significantly accelerate the aqueous oxidation of SO2, resulting in unexpectedly high S(VI) formation rates. We estimate that under severe haze conditions, heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 by NO2 on aerosols may be much shorter than that through gas phase oxidation by OH, aided by high ionic strengths in aerosols. Considering the existence of complex air pollution conditions with high concentrations of NO2, NH3 and aerosol water, as expected in typical urban and suburban settings, the sulfate formation mechanisms revealed in the present work should be incorporated into air quality models to improve the prediction of sulfate concentrations.

Abstract:Sulfate is one of the main components of haze fine particles, and its formation mechanism remains controversial. A lack of detailed and comprehensive field data hinders the accurate evaluation of relative roles of prevailing sulfate formation pathways. Here, we analyzed the sulfate production rates using a state-of-the-art multiphase model constrained to the observed concentrations of transition metal, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, hydrogen peroxide and other important parameters in winter and summer in the North China Plain. Our results showed that aqueous transition metal ion (TMI)-catalyzed oxidation was the most important pathway followed by the surface oxidation of Mn in both winter and summer while the hydroxyl and Criegee radical oxidations contribute significantly in summer. In addition, we also modeled the published cases for the fog and cloud conditions. It is found that nitrogen dioxide oxidation is the dominant pathway for the fog in a higher pH range while hydroperoxide and ozone oxidations dominated for the cloud.
A More Important Role for the Ozone‐S(IV) Oxidation Pathway Due to Decreasing Acidity in Clouds

Abstract:Clouds significantly affect the Earth's radiation budget and play a critical role in atmospheric sulfate formation. The pathways of S(IV) oxidations have recently caused a controversial attention under severe haze episodes due to the variable acidity and water content in aerosol particles. In this study, a total of 158 cloud samples were collected from 2014 to 2018 at the summit of Mt. Tai, China, to explore the roles of atmospheric oxidants in aqueous S(IV) oxidation. The results showed that the averaged pH value of cloud water increased dramatically from 3.86 (Guo et al., 2012, ) in 2007-2008, similar to 5.5 in 2014, to similar to 6.4 in 2018, respectively, while water soluble secondary ions (SO42-, NO(3)(-)and NH4+) and S(IV) decreased significantly. The four pathways of S(IV) oxidation by O-3, H2O2, NO2, and trace metal-catalyzed autooxidation were further discussed, and the roles in S(IV) oxidation pathways were found changing significantly with pH value in clouds. The rate of H2O2 pathway contributed about 95.8% for S(IV) oxidation when pH was less than 4.0. For pH around 5.0, the rate of O(3)pathway became comparable with the H2O2 pathway, and it accounted more than 95.2% for the total S(IV) oxidation rate when pH was larger than 6.0. Based on the long-term field measurement, this study indicated that the high concentration of O-3 and the increasing trend of pH promoted a shift of the dominant S(IV) oxidation from H2O2 pathway in a previous study (Shen et al., 2012, ) to O-3 pathway in clouds.
Atmospheric Sulfate Formation from SO2 Oxidation by NO2 is Enhanced by Charges at the Air-Aqueous Interface

Abstract:Abstract Heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 by NO2 on aerosol particles has recently been thought as one of the major formation pathways of sulfate in the polluted troposphere, but the underlying chemical mechanisms and kinetics remain uncertain. Here, we show that sulfate formation via NO2 oxidation is critically dependent on the charges at the air-aqueous interface by combining lab experiments, theoretical chemistry calculations, and atmospheric measurements. Our results reveal that the oxidation rate (k_(〖NO〗_2+〖HSO〗_3^- )) (2.1x108–7.0x109 M-1s-1) of SO2 by NO2 in the aerosol aqueous phase in Chinese haze periods is 3–4 orders of magnitude larger than the traditionally held value for the bulk phase due to the accumulation of chloride and carboxylic anions at the air-aqueous interface, which significantly accelerates the SO2 oxidation by enhancing the uptake of NO2 through interfacial electrostatic attraction. Atmospheric models not accounting for this aerosol interfacial process likely produce major misrepresentations of tropospheric sulfate aerosols under polluted conditions.
Modelling the Photochemical Formation of High H2O2 Concentrations and Secondary Sulfate Observed During Winter Haze Periods in the NCP

Abstract:During winter, the North China Plain (NCP) is frequently characterized by severe haze conditions connected with extremely high PM2.5 and NOx concentrations, i.e. strong air pollution. The NCP is one of the most populated regions worldwide where haze periods have direct health effects. Tropospheric haze particles are a complex multiphase and multi-component environment, in which multiphase chemical processes are able to alter the chemical aerosol composition and deduced physical aerosol properties and can strongly contribute to air pollution. Despite many past investigations, the chemical haze processing is still uncertain and represents a challenge to atmospheric chemistry research. Recent NCP studies during autumn/winter 2017 haze periods have revealed unexpected high H2O2 concentrations of about 1 ppb suggesting H2O2 as a potential contributor to secondary PM2.5 mass, e.g., due to sulfur(IV) oxidation. However, the multiphase H2O2 formation under such NOx concentrations is still unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed at the examination of potential multiphase H2O2 formation pathways, and the feedback on sulfur oxidation.Multiphase chemistry simulations of a measurement campaign in the NCP are performed with the box model SPACCIM. The multiphase chemistry model within SPACCIM contains the gas-phase mechanism MCMv3.2 and the aqueous-phase mechanism CAPRAM4.0 together with both its aromatics module CAPRAM-AM1.0 and its halogen module CAPRAM-HM2.1. Furthermore, based on available literature data, the multiphase chemistry mechanism is extended considering further multiphase formation pathways of HONO and an advanced HOx mechanism scheme enabling higher in-situ H2O2 formations in haze particles. The simulations have been performed for three periods characterized by high H2O2 concentrations, high RH and PM2.5 conditions and high measurement data availability. Several sensitivity runs have been performed examining the impact of the soluble transition metal ion (TMI) content on the predicted H2O2 formation.Simulations with the improved multiphase chemistry mechanism shows a good agreement of the modelled H2O2 concentrations with field data. The modelled H2O2 concentration shows a substantial dependency on the soluble TMI content. Higher soluble TMI contents result in higher H2O2 concentrations demonstrating the strong influence of TMI chemistry in haze particles on H2O2 formation. The analysis of the chemical production and sink fluxes reveals that a huge fraction of the multiphase HO2 radicals and nearly all of the subsequently formed reaction product H2O2 is produced in-situ within the haze particles and does not origin from the gas phase. Further chemical analyses show that, during the morning hours, the aqueous-phase reaction of H2O2 with S(IV) contributes considerably to S(VI) formation beside the HONO related formation of sulfuric acid by OH in the gas-phase.Finally, a parameterization was developed to study the particle-phase H2O2 formations as potential source with the global model ECHAM-HAMMOZ. The performed global modelling identifies an increase of gas-phase H2O2 by a factor of 2.8 through the newly identified particle chemistry. Overall, the study demonstrated that photochemical reactions of HULIS and TMIs in particles are an important H2O2 source leading to increased particle sulfate formation.

Abstract:Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a major atmospheric pollutant and precursor of sulfate aerosols, which influences air quality, cloud microphysics, and climate. Therefore, better understanding the conversion of SO2 to sulfate is essential to simulate and predict sulfur compounds more accurately. This study evaluates the effects of in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry on SO2 oxidation in the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). We replaced the default parameterized SO2 aqueous-phase reactions with detailed HOx, Fe, N, and carbonate chemistry in cloud droplets and performed a global simulation for 2014–2015. Compared with the observations, the results incorporating detailed cloud aqueous-phase chemistry greatly reduced SO2 overestimation. This overestimation was reduced by 0.1–10 ppbv (parts per billion by volume) in most of Europe, North America, and Asia and more than 10 ppbv in parts of China. The biases in annual simulated SO2 mixing ratios decreased by 46 %, 41 %, and 22 % in Europe, the USA, and China, respectively. Fe chemistry and HOx chemistry contributed more to SO2 oxidation than N chemistry. Higher concentrations of soluble Fe and higher pH values could further enhance the oxidation capacity. This study emphasizes the importance of detailed in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry for the oxidation of SO2. These mechanisms can improve SO2 simulation in CESM2 and deepen understanding of SO2 oxidation and sulfate formation.

Abstract:In-cloud production of sulfate modifies aerosol size distribution, with important implications for the magnitude of indirect and direct aerosol cooling and the impact of SO2 emissions on the environment. We investigate which sulfate sources dominate the in-cloud addition of sulfate to different particle classes as an air parcel passes through an orographic cloud. Sulfate aerosol, SO2 and H2SO4 were collected upwind, in-cloud and downwind of an orographic cloud for three cloud measurement events during the Hill Cap Cloud Thuringia campaign in autumn 2010 (HCCT-2010). Combined SEM and NanoSIMS analysis of single particles allowed the δ34S of particulate sulfate to be resolved for particle size and type. The most important in-cloud SO2 oxidation pathway at HCCT-2010 was aqueous oxidation catalysed by transition metal ions (TMI catalysis), which was shown with single particle isotope analyses to occur primarily in cloud droplets nucleated on coarse mineral dust. In contrast, direct uptake of H2SO4 (g) and ultrafine particulate were the most important sources modifying fine mineral dust, increasing its hygroscopicity and facilitating activation. Sulfate addition to "mixed" particles (secondary organic and inorganic aerosol) and coated soot was dominated by in-cloud aqueous SO2 oxidation by H2O2 and direct uptake of H2SO4 (g) and ultrafine particle sulfate, depending on particle size mode and time of day. These results provide new insight into in-cloud sulfate production mechanisms, and show the importance of single particle measurements and models to accurately assess the environmental effects of cloud processing.

Abstract:Atmospheric oxidation is an important phenomenon which produces large quantities of low-volatility compounds such as sulfuric acid and oxidized organic compounds. Such species may be involved in the nucleation of particles and enhance their subsequent growth to reach the size of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). In this study, we investigate α-pinene, the most abundant monoterpene globally, and its oxidation products formed through ozonolysis in the Cosmic Leaving OUtdoor Droplets (CLOUD) chamber at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research). By scavenging hydroxyl radicals (OH) with hydrogen (H2), we were able to investigate the formation of highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs) purely driven by ozonolysis and study the oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) driven by stabilized Criegee intermediates (sCIs). We measured the concentrations of HOM and sulfuric acid with a chemical ionization atmospheric-pressure interface time-of-flight (CI-APi-TOF) mass spectrometer and compared the measured concentrations with simulated concentrations calculated with a kinetic model. We found molar yields in the range of 3.5–6.5 % for HOM formation and 22–32 % for the formation of stabilized Criegee intermediates by fitting our model to the measured sulfuric acid concentrations. The simulated time evolution of the ozonolysis products was in good agreement with measured concentrations except that in some of the experiments sulfuric acid formation was faster than simulated. In those experiments the simulated and measured concentrations met when the concentration reached a plateau but the plateau was reached 20–50 min later in the simulations. The results shown here are consistent with the recently published yields for HOM formation from different laboratory experiments. Together with the sCI yields, these results help us to understand atmospheric oxidation processes better and make the reaction parameters more comprehensive for broader use.

Abstract:Atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO) chemistry is of critical importance to air quality during polluted haze events, especially in China. However, current air quality models (such as WRF-CHEM, WRF-CMAQ, Box-MCM) generally underestimate the concentration of HONO, leading to a lack of fundamental understanding of haze pollution. Here, by combining field observations during haze events in Beijing and modeling results, we developed the new parameterization scheme for heterogeneous nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) reaction on aerosol surfaces with the synergistic effects of relative humidity and ammonia, which has not been considered in existing air quality models. Including NO 2 heterogeneous reactions into modeling significantly improves the estimation accuracy of HONO and OH levels, with the contribution reaching up to 91% and 78% during pollution episodes. The OH derived by HONO can partly explain high concentrations of particulate matter. Together, our work provides a new approach to illustrate the formation of HONO, OH, and haze with the consideration of heterogeneous NO 2 → HONO chemistry.

Abstract:Chemical processes in clouds and fogs can substantially alter atmospheric oxidant budgets and lead to aerosol mass formation. However, many regional and global models do not include detailed aqueous-phase chemical mechanisms due to the (a) lack of complete understanding of the chemical processes and (b) computational burden of adding constituents. Current gas-aqueous chemistry 0-dimensional models were evaluated in a cloud-chemistry box model intercomparison based on a mid-September 2016 cloud chemistry event at Whiteface Mountain, New York. Multiphase mechanisms in the five participating models ranged from those appropriate for 3-d models to highly complex with thousands of reactions. This study focused on oxidant levels in both phases and aqueous-phase sulfate and organic acid formation. Comparison of gas-phase-only chemistry gives very similar oxidant predictions at night but shows significant differences during daytime with the hydroxyl radical (OH) variability of about an order of magnitude. The variability in the model results increases substantially with aqueous chemistry due to different Henry's Law constants, aqueous-phase reaction rate constants, and chemical mechanisms. Using a prescribed liquid water content and pH value of 4.5, modeled aqueous OH, aldehyde, and organic acid concentrations differ by over an order of magnitude in daytime. Simulations were also conducted at a pH = 5.1, predicted variable pH, and with added transition metal ion chemistry. While we compare predicted and measured inorganic anions and water-soluble organic carbon, we cannot do so for aqueous-phase oxidant concentrations due to the lack of measurements. We highlight a need for recommended equilibrium and aqueous-phase rate constants.
Efficient Control of Atmospheric Sulfate Production Based on Three Formation Regimes

Abstract:The formation of sulfate (SO 4 2− ) in the atmosphere is linked chemically to its direct precursor, sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), through several key oxidation paths for which nitrogen oxides or NO x (NO and NO 2 ) play essential roles. Here we present a coherent description of the dependence of SO 4 2– formation on SO 2 and NO x under haze-fog conditions, in which fog events are accompanied by high aerosol loadings and fog-water pH in the range of 4.7–6.9. Three SO 4 2– formation regimes emerge as defined by the role played by NO x . In the low-NO x regime, NO x act as catalyst for HO x , which is a major oxidant for SO 2 , whereas in the high-NO x regime, NO 2 is a sink for HO x . Moreover, at highly elevated NO x levels, a so-called NO 2 -oxidant regime exists in which aqueous NO 2 serves as the dominant oxidant of SO 2 . This regime also exists under clean fog conditions but is less prominent. Sensitivity calculations using an emission-driven box model show that the reduction of SO 4 2– is comparably sensitive to the reduction of SO 2 and NO x emissions in the NO 2 -oxidant regime, suggesting a co-reduction strategy. Formation of SO 4 2− is relatively insensitive to NO x reduction in the low-NO x regime, whereas reduction of NO x actually leads to increased SO 4 2– production in the intermediate high-NO x regime.
Aerosol Ph and Regime Transition of Sulfate Formation in Aerosol Water During Winter Haze Events in Northern China

Abstract:Understanding the formation mechanism of severe haze is crucial for the development of efficient pollution control strategy. Recently, multiphase reactions in aerosol water has been suggested as an important source of sulfate aerosol during severe haze (Zheng et al., 2015;Cheng et al., 2016). Though several oxidation mechanisms have been recognized, the dominant oxidation pathway is still under debate reflecting a missing consensus. Based on a model survey with Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem), we have investigated the variability of aerosol pH and regimes of sulfate formation through multiphase oxidation during the haze episodes in January of 2013. Our results show a large spatial and temporal variability in the aerosol pH and sulfate formation regimes. Surface aerosol pH shows a clear diurnal variation with low pH during daytime and high pH during night-time for most cases. Aerosol pH tends to decrease with increasing altitude in the lower atmosphere. For the scenario best reproduces the observations in Beijing, NO2, TMI+O2, O3 and H2O2 pathways can all dominate the production of sulfate in specific areas of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. With the increasing height, O3 pathway and gas phase oxidation by OH radicals become more important. Moreover, sensitivity tests also suggest that, emissions of crustal particles, NH3 and soluble iron/manganese have great impacts on aqueous phase chemistry, and should be better constrained in future studies.References:Zheng, G. Abstract:The potential for chemistry occurring in cloud droplets to impact atmospheric composition has been known for some time. However, the lack of direct observations and uncertainty in the magnitude of these reactions led to this area being overlooked in most chemistry transport models. Here we present observations from Mt Schmücke, Germany, of the HO2 radical made alongside a suite of cloud measurements. HO2 concentrations were depleted in-cloud by up to 90% with the rate of heterogeneous loss of HO2 to clouds necessary to bring model and measurements into agreement, demonstrating a dependence on droplet surface area and pH. This provides the first observationally derived assessment for the uptake coefficient of HO2 to cloud droplets and was found to be in good agreement with theoretically derived parameterisations. Global model simulations, including this cloud uptake, showed impacts on the oxidising capacity of the troposphere that depended critically on whether the HO2 uptake leads to production of H2O2 or H2O.

Abstract:Fog water phase is an effective media for aqueous sulfate formation, especially in polluted urban areas. Fog events frequently occur in northern China during wintertime, which are characterized by increased aerosol loadings with sulfate concentrations reaching about 200 micrograms per cubic meters in 2010s. Studies on sulfur chemistry in fog events specifically for this region are inadequate. In this study, we combine the in-situ measurements in a fog episode in winter, 2015 with a multiphase chemical box model to interpret the sulfur species transformation and their key drivers in fog aqueous phase. Our model results demonstrate that the oxidation by NO2 in fog water serves as the most important pathway, explaining 97% of the sulfate production. High liquid water content in fog and elevated precursors concentrations are the major drivers of rapid sulfate formation. In line with observational studies, the reaction of dissolved SO2 and HCHO yields the production of hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) equivalent to 11% of the sulfate mass. Given the high dependence of sulfate and HMS production rates to liquid phase acidity, the nonlinear response of their mass concentrations to the air pollution policies should be further examined.

Abstract:Abstract. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a major atmospheric pollutant and precursor of sulfate aerosols, which influences air quality, cloud microphysics, and climate. Therefore, better understanding the conversion of SO2 to sulfate is essential to simulate and predict sulfur compounds more accurately. This study evaluates the effects of in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry on SO2 oxidation in the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). We replaced the default parameterized SO2 aqueous-phase reactions with detailed HOx, Fe, N, and carbonate chemistry in cloud droplets and performed a global simulation for 2014–2015. Compared with the observations, the results incorporating detailed cloud aqueous-phase chemistry greatly reduced SO2 overestimation. This overestimation was reduced by 0.1–10 ppbv (parts per billion by volume) in most of Europe, North America, and Asia and more than 10 ppbv in parts of China. The biases in annual simulated SO2 mixing ratios decreased by 46 %, 41 %, and 22 % in Europe, the USA, and China, respectively. Fe chemistry and HOx chemistry contributed more to SO2 oxidation than N chemistry. Higher concentrations of soluble Fe and higher pH values could further enhance the oxidation capacity. This study emphasizes the importance of detailed in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry for the oxidation of SO2. These mechanisms can improve SO2 simulation in CESM2 and deepen understanding of SO2 oxidation and sulfate formation.

Abstract:In recent years in a few Chinese megacities, fog events lasting one to a few days have been frequently associated with high levels of aerosol loading characterized by high sulfate (as high as 30 μg m(-3)), therefore termed as haze-fog events. The concomitant pollution characteristics include high gas-phase mixing ratios of SO2 (up to 71 ppbv) and NO2 (up to 69 ppbv), high aqueous phase pH (5-6), and smaller fog droplets (as low as 2 μm), resulting from intense emissions from fossil fuel combustion and construction activities supplying abundant Ca(2+). In this work, we use an observation-based model for secondary inorganic aerosols (OBM-SIA) to simulate sulfate formation pathways under conditions of haze-fog events encountered in Chinese megacities. The OBM analysis has identified, at a typical haze-fogwater pH of 5.6, the most important pathway to be oxidation of S(IV) by dissolved NO2, followed by the heterogeneous reaction of SO2 on the aerosol surface. The aqueous phase oxidation of S(IV) by H2O2 is a very minor formation pathway as a result of the high NOx conditions suppressing H2O2 formation. The model results indicate that the unique cocktail of high fogwater pH, high concentrations of NO2, SO2, and PM, and small fog droplets are capable of greatly enhancing sulfate formation. Such haze-fog conditions could lead to rapid sulfate production at night and subsequently high PM2.5 in the morning when the fog evaporates. Sulfate formation is simulated to be highly sensitive to fogwater pH, PM, and precursor gases NO2 and SO2. Such insights on major contributing factors imply that reduction of road dust and NOx emissions could lessen PM2.5 loadings in Chinese megacities during fog events.

Abstract:Haze related air pollution has become one of major environmental concerns in some Asian countries. Sulfate is a main component of ambient particulate matter (PM) in the urban environment during haze episodes. Among the pollutants, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an important precursor of sulfate and new atmospheric particle formation. However, under different atmospheric conditions its underlying formation mechanisms are not clearly elucidated. In the current work, we collected ambient PM in two cities: Zurich (Switzerland) and Beijing (China). The PM morphology and the composition were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy and Raman micro-spectroscopy. In addition, a series of lab controlled experiments were also performed to study the SO2 reaction with CaCO3 aerosol. We found different types of CaSO4·2H2O crystals in the Chinese urban samples, with clearly different compositions than those from Zurich. The experimental data showed that the relative humidity played a significant role on the new CaSO4·2H2O crystal formation including its size, morphology and composition. Relative humidity (RH) above 80% can significantly promote SO2 oxidation on the CaCO3 particles and form the CaSO4·2H2O crystals. In contrast, at relative humidity below 40%, only few CaCO3 particles can be converted to CaSO4 particles. The results of this study facilitate the understanding of secondary inorganic aerosol formation by the reaction of CaCO3 particles with SO2 with different RHs in different city environments, and provide useful information for air pollution control.
Stable Sulfur Isotopes Revealed a Major Role of Transition-Metal Ion-Catalyzed SO2 Oxidation in Haze Episodes

Abstract:Secondary sulfate aerosols played an important role in aerosol formation and aging processes, especially during haze episodes in China. Secondary sulfate was formed via atmospheric oxidation of SO2 by OH, O3, H2O2, and transition-metal-catalyzed (TMI) O2. However, the relative importance of these oxidants in haze episodes was strongly debated. Here, we use stable sulfur isotopes (δ34S) of sulfate aerosols and a Rayleigh distillation model to quantify the contributions of each oxidant during a haze episode in Nanjing, a megacity in China. The observed δ34S values of sulfate aerosols showed a negative correlation with sulfur oxidation ratios, which was attributed to the sulfur isotopic fractionations during the sulfate formation processes. Using the average fractionation factor calculated from our observations and zero-dimensional (0-D) atmospheric chemistry modeling estimations, we suggest that OH oxidation was trivial during the haze episode, while the TMI pathway contributed 49 ± 10% of the total sulfate production and O3/H2O2 oxidations accounted for the rest. Our results displayed good agreement with several atmospheric chemistry models that carry aqueous and heterogeneous TMI oxidation pathways, suggesting the role of the TMI pathway was significant during haze episodes.
