Abstract:In this paper, the boundary knot method is extended to the solution of inhomogeneous equations, and it is applied to the Cauchy problem associated with the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation. Here, we assume that the boundary condition is specified only on a part of the boundary, and the boundary conditions on the remaining part of the boundary are to be determined with the assistance of additional data. Since the resulting matrix equation is highly ill-conditioned, a regularized solution is obtained by employing the truncated singular value decomposition to solve the matrix equation arising from the boundary knot method, with the regularization parameter determined by the L-curve method. Numerical results are presented for several examples with smooth and piecewise smooth boundaries. The numerical verification shows that the proposed numerical scheme is accurate, stable with respect to data noise, and convergent with respect to decreasing the amount of noise in the data.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the well-posedness (existence and uniqueness) of entropy solutions to the general anisotropic degenerate parabolic–hyperbolic equations with L∞ initial data and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We use the doubling variables device to prove a comparison theorem, which implies the uniqueness. The existence of entropy solutions can be obtained by finding the limit of solutions for the regularized equation of strictly parabolic type.

Abstract:We study homogenization of a boundary obstacle problem on $ C^{1,\alpha} $ domain $D$ for some elliptic equations with uniformly elliptic coefficient matrices $\gamma$. For any $ \epsilon\in\mathbb{R}_+$, $\partial D=\Gamma \cup \Sigma$, $\Gamma \cap \Sigma=\emptyset $ and $ S_{\epsilon}\subset \Sigma $ with suitable assumptions,\ we prove that as $\epsilon$ tends to zero, the energy minimizer $ u^{\epsilon} $ of $ \int_{D} |\gamma\nabla u|^{2} dx $, subject to $ u\geq \varphi $ on $ S_{\varepsilon} $, up to a subsequence, converges weakly in $ H^{1}(D) $ to $ \widetilde{u} $ which minimizes the energy functional $\int_{D}|\gamma\nabla u|^{2}+\int_{\Sigma} (u-\varphi)^{2}_{-}\mu(x) dS_{x}$, where $\mu(x)$ depends on the structure of $S_{\epsilon}$ and $ \varphi $ is any given function in $C^{\infty}(\overline{D})$.

Abstract:We consider a mixed type boundary value problem for a class of degenerate parabolic–hyperbolic equations. Namely, we consider a Cartesian product domain and split its boundary into two parts. In one of them we impose a Dirichlet boundary condition; in the other, we impose a Neumann condition. We apply a normal trace formula for L 2-divergence-measure fields to prove a new strong trace property in the part of the boundary where the Neumann condition is imposed. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the entropy solution.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the boundary value problem of the classical semilinear parabolic equations $$ u_t-\Delta u=|u|^{p-1}u, \ \ in \ \ \Omega\times (0,T) $$ and $u=0$ on the boundary $\partial\Omega\times [0,T)$ and $u=\phi$ at $t=0$, where $\Omega\subset R^n$ is a compact $C^1$ domain, $1<p\leq p_S$ is a fixed constant, and $\phi\in C^2_0(\Omega)$ is a given smooth function. Introducing new idea, we show that there are two sets $\tilde{W}$ and $\tilde{Z}$ such that for $\phi\in W$, there is a global positive solution $u(t)\in \tilde{W}$ with $h^1$ omega limit $\{0\}$ and for $\phi\in \tilde{Z}$, the solution blows up at finite time.

Abstract:In this article, we describe an approach for solving partial differential equations with general boundary conditions imposed on arbitrarily shaped boundaries. A function that has a prescribed value on the domain in which a differential equation is valid and smoothly but rapidly varying values on the boundary where boundary conditions are imposed is used to modify the original differential equations. The mathematical derivations are straight forward, and generically applicable to a wide variety of partial differential equations. To demonstrate the general applicability of the approach, we provide four examples: (1) the diffusion equation with both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions, (2) the diffusion equation with surface diffusion, (3) the mechanical equilibrium equation, and (4) the equation for phase transformation with additional boundaries. The solutions for a few of these cases are validated against corresponding analytical and semi-analytical solutions. The potential of the approach is demonstrated with five applications: surface-reaction diffusion kinetics with a complex geometry, Kirkendall-effect-induced deformation, thermal stress in a complex geometry, phase transformations affected by substrate surfaces, and a self-propelling droplet.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the well-posedness (existence and uniqueness) of the Lp entropy solution to the homogeneous Dirichlet problems for the anisotropic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with Lp initial value. We use the device of doubling variables and some technical analysis to prove the uniqueness result. Moreover we can prove that the Lp entropy solution can be obtained as the limit of solutions of the corresponding regularized equations of nondegenerate parabolic type.

Abstract:In this paper, for a family of second-order parabolic system or equation with rapidly oscillating and time-dependent periodic coefficients over rough boundaries, we obtain the large-scale boundary estimates, by a quantitative approach. The quantitative approach relies on approximating twice: we first approximate the original parabolic problem over rough boundary by the same equation over a non-oscillating boundary and then approximate the oscillating equation over a non-oscillating boundary by its homogenized equation over the same non-oscillating boundary.

Abstract:(1) Background: This paper is devoted to the study of a class of semilinear initial boundary value problems of parabolic type. (2) Methods: We make use of fractional powers of analytic semigroups and the interpolation theory of compact linear operators due to Lions–Peetre. (3) Results: We give a functional analytic proof of the C2 compactness of a bounded regular solution orbit for semilinear parabolic problems with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. (4) Conclusions: As an application, we study the dynamics of a population inhabiting a strongly heterogeneous environment that is modeled by a class of diffusive logistic equations with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.

Abstract:We study the $\bar\partial$ equation subject to various boundary value conditions on bounded simply connected Lipschitz domains $D\subset\mathbb C$: for the Dirichlet problem with datum in $L^p(bD, \sigma)$, this is simply a restatement of the fact that members of the holomorphic Hardy spaces are uniquely and completely determined by their boundary values. Here we identify the maximal data spaces and obtain estimates in the maximal $p$-range for the Dirichlet, Regularity-for-Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin boundary conditions for $\bar\partial$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the nonautonomous heat equation in C[0, 1] with generalized Wentzell boundary conditions. It is shown, under appropriate assumptions, that there exists a unique evolution family for this problem and that the family satisfies various regularity properties. This enables us to obtain, for the corresponding inhomogeneous problem, classical and strict solutions having optimal regularity.

By the mountain pass theorem we first prove the existence of nonzero weak solution to the static problem, which is the important basis of evolution problem, then based on the method of potential well we prove the existence of global weak solution to the evolution problem.

A continuous function, the domain parameter, is used to modify the original differential equations such that the equations are solved in the region where a domain parameter takes a specified value while boundary conditions are imposed on the region where the value of the domain parameter varies smoothly across a short distance. Abstract:In this paper, the numerical solutions of three problems of heat equation on unbounded domains are considered. For each problem, we introduce an artificial boundary Γ to make the computational domain finite. On the artificial boundary Γ, we propose an exact artificial boundary condition to reduce the original problem to an initial-boundary problem of heat equation on the finite computational domain, which is equivalent to the original problem. Then the finite difference method and finite element method are used to solve the reduced problem on the finite computational domain. In the end of this paper, three numerical examples show the feasibility and effectiveness of the method given in this paper.

Abstract:We consider a nonlinear Neumann problem, with periodic oscillation in the elliptic operator and on the boundary condition. Our focus is on problems posed in half-spaces, but with general normal directions that may not be parallel to the directions of periodicity. As the frequency of the oscillation grows, quantitative homogenization results are derived. When the homogenized operator is rotation-invariant, we prove the Hölder continuity of the homogenized boundary data.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the homogenization of Dirichlet problem of elliptic systems in a bounded, smooth domain of finite type. Both the coefficients of the elliptic operator and the Dirichlet boundary data are assumed to be periodic and rapidly oscillating. We prove the theorem of homogenization and obtain an algebraic rate of convergence that depends explicitly on dimension and the type of the domain.
