Abstract:Based on a brief review of the history of China's librarianship after the year of 1949,and an analysis of the inadequacy in the social position and the institutional construction of libraries,this paper points out that the independent and closed-up social structure deprives libraries of the driving force of their development.Therefore,an institutional system must be constructed for the development of China's librarianship by taking into account its national conditions and using western library system as a reference,a diversified library system devised and the development of its management,operation and evaluation promoted with proper policies.

Abstract:The Chinese library science education has already gone through nine decades.It has experienced three development stages.1920 to 1949 was the beginning and the first prosperity stage;1950 to 1977 was the second prosperity and decline stage;1978 to 2008 was the third prosperity,decline and revival stage.Based on the analysis of the formation and features of library science,this paper fully reviews and analyzes the history of library science education in China.The author thinks that in the future,library science education should pay attention to "knowledge",redefine its various levels,and inherit the predecessors' idea of constructing China's own library science,so that the Chinese library science education can have Chinese features.

Abstract:The translation and research of Chinese foreign literature have a rich and distinguished history that spans over a century, yielding numerous and substantial achievements. These research outcomes for thoroughly synthesized and scientific analyses can provide authoritative and accurate guidance for foreign literature translation and research, highlighting the significance of the China Foreign Literature Studies Index (CFLSI) database. This article focuses on three issues encountered in database development. 1) An examination of the limitations of existing public network resources based on the unique nature of the foreign literature discipline, thereby establishing the necessity for the creation of a discipline-specific database; 2) An exploration of the composition, functional design, and implementation approaches of the CFLSI database in response to the requirements of foreign literature researchers; 3) The establishment of the database framework and development technology of the system aligned with the data composition and functional design. The creation of the CFLSI database represents an exploration and application to merge digital technology with a comprehensive understanding of the foreign literature discipline.

Abstract:The author summarizes academic achievements in library science in China since 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded,especially since 1978 when China began its open-door policy.They are focused on restructuring theoretical system of library science,extending international views,considering cross-disciplinary exchanges,putting emphasis on the relationship between theoretical and practical researches,and introducing diversified methodologies.These new research achievements have brought about new changes in library science,and some new hot topics have appeared.The author also points out existing problems and expresses his hope to the new generation of researchers.

Abstract:110 years' development of Peking University Library is divided into three periods: start-up and tortuous development in Late Qing and the Republic of China period,expanded and progressive development period from the founding of the People's Republic of China to pre-reforming and opening up,and sustainable development period to catch up with the world advanced universities library after the reform and opening up.Characteristics and achievements of each period are summarized.Finally,the future of academic libraries is redefined and prospected from eight aspects.

Abstract:The development of library science is discussed within four main phases: US influence before 1949; Soviet Union influence 1949‐1965; diplomatic segregation from the West 1966‐1976; and the influence of the developed countries 1977‐1991. The effects of the Cold War on Chinese politics and so on librarianship are indicated and discussed and the influence of the Cultural Revolution, and recovery after it, analysed.

Abstract:Sixty years of Chinese library science research,after the founding of P.R.China,stepped forward in twisting road.This road is filled with farce,disgrace,vigorous work and puzzlement.Yet,the independent and freedom consciousness of Chinese library science can not absolutely establish in certain degree.The contents and harvest of Chinese library science research are full of official color.In research method,it can not be adept to amalgamating and intercrossing research.There is distinctive deficiency in subject self-reflection and subject construction with communication.In library science context,a bad trend appears,such as superficial library science knowledge and administrative promoting system.The successor of library science can not inherit well their former elite's excellent characters.All the above are the long-term problem in Chinese library science research.Only by overcoming the above problem,Chinese library science can develop in healthy way.

Abstract:SUMMARY With a long history, cataloging has evolved with changes in society, economy, and technology in China. This paper presents Chinese cataloging history in four parts, with emphasis on the last two parts: the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 and the development of cataloging after 1979 when China opened its doors to the world. Particularly important has been the rapid growth of online cataloging in recent years. The China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS), as a successful online cataloging model, is emphasized. Through investigation of the entire history of Chinese cataloging, three distinct features can be stated: (1) Standardization–switching from the Chinese traditional way to aligning with international standards, (2) Cooperation–from decentralized and self-supporting systems to sharing systems, (3) Computerization and networking–from manual operation to computer-based online operation. At the end of this paper, a set of means by which to enhance online cataloging and resource sharing is suggested.

Abstract:Purpose The research in this paper aims to investigate the development of Library and Information Science in Chinese universities. Specifically, it focuses on understanding the spatial and temporal aspects of subject knowledge output and providing a more comprehensive explanation of the imbalance in subject research. Design/methodology/approach This study applies the bibliometric method to analyze 131,112 papers published by 51 universities in mainland China from 1977 to 2021, as recorded in the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI). The study classifies the evolution trends of the discipline and quantifies the published article data of the universities using the index of published articles. Additionally, it examines the development status, structural situation, influencing factors and prospects of universities in different categories and regions. Findings The field of Library and Information Science is gaining momentum in Chinese universities, but there are significant differences in its development. While the relative gap among universities in a regional context is diminishing, the absolute gap in the category perspective is increasing. The development of Library and Information Science is influenced by various factors, including the academic environment, geographical position, scientific research projects and academic traditions. The uneven development of the discipline is maintained in the short term. Originality/value This paper proposes a new quantitative index of discipline development, the university publication index. This index allows for an examination of the temporal and spatial trends of discipline development using domestic universities as the subject of research. The paper presents an overview of discipline development through four aspects: academic participation practice, discipline governance mechanisms, education and teaching systems and discourse construction within the discipline. The theoretical support provided by this study can help facilitate innovative development in the discipline.

Abstract:Library and information science education in China is in a period of transition. The changes in the social, economic and technological environment have introduced new requirements for the professional personnel. The growth of the information industry and the expansion of the labor market have motivated schools of library and information science to adjust their objectives, curriculum and knowledge structure in order to meet social needs. This article discusses the changing social environment in the 1990s and the challenges to professional education, and responses from schools. Based on the curriculum of 17 schools of library and information science in China provided at the Second Joint Annual Meeting of Deans held in 1995, the author provides data on required courses, specialized elective courses and non-specialized courses according to the frequency of each course appearing in the curriculum. The objectives are to determine the state-of-the-art structure of the knowledge base and to identify any consensus among teaching institutions. The difficulties and problems in educational reform are discussed and some trends in professional education in China are predicted.
