Abstract:A topological space X has a rank 2-diagonal if there exists a diagonal sequence on X of rank 2, that is, there is a countable family {U-n: n is an element of w} of open covers of X such that for each x is an element of X, {x} = boolean AND{St(2)(x, U-n): n is an element of w}. We say that a space X satisfies the Discrete Countable Chain Condition (DCCC for short) if every discrete family of nonempty open subsets of X is countable. We mainly prove that if X is a DCCC normal space with a rank 2-diagonal, then the cardinality of X is at most c. Moreover, we prove that if X is a first countable DCCC normal space and has a G(delta)-diagonal, then the cardinality of X is at most c.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the cardinality of a star Lindelöf space X does not exceed c if X satisfies one of the following conditions: (1) X has a rank 3-diagonal; (2) X is normal and has a rank 2-diagonal; (3) X is first countable, normal and has a Gδ-diagonal. Abstract:A topological space X has property (DC(omega(1))) if it has a dense subspace every uncountable subset of which has a limit point in X. In this paper, we make some observations on spaces with property (DC(omega(1))). In particular, we prove that the cardinality of a space X with property (DC(omega(1))) does not exceed c if X satisfies one of the following conditions: (1) X is normal and has a rank 2-diagonal; (2) X is perfect and has a rank 2-diagonal; (3) X has a rank 3-diagonal; (4) X is perfect and has countable tightness. We also prove that if X is a regular space with a G(delta)-diagonal and property (DC(omega(1))) then the cardinality of Xis at most 2(c).

Abstract:Given an open cover $\mathcal{U}$ of a topological space $X$, we introduce the notion of a star network for $\mathcal{U}$. The associated cardinal function $sn(X)$, where $e(X)\leq sn(X)\leq L(X)$, is used to establish new cardinal inequalities involving diagonal degrees. We show $|X|\leq sn(X)^{\Delta(X)}$ for a $T_1$ space $X$, giving a partial answer to a long-standing question of Angelo Bella. Many further results are given using variations of $sn(X)$. One result has as corollaries Buzyakova's theorem that a ccc space with a regular $G_\delta$-diagonal has cardinality at most $\mathfrak{c}$, as well as three results of Gotchev. Further results lead to logical improvements of theorems of Basile, Bella, and Ridderbos, a partial solution to a question of the same authors, and a theorem of Gotchev, Tkachenko, and Tkachuk. Finally, we define the Urysohn extent $Ue(X)$ with the property $Ue(X)\leq\min\{aL(X),e(X)\}$ and use the Erdős-Rado theorem to show that $|X|\leq 2^{Ue(X)\overline{\Delta}(X)}$ for any Urysohn space $X$.

Abstract:A topological space (X, tau) is a D-space if for every function phi: X -> tau with x is an element of phi(x) for each x is an element of X, {phi(x) : x is an element of F} covers X for some closed discrete subset F of X. The Michael line M, one of the most important elementary examples in general topology, is the Euclidean space IR isolating the irrationals. In this note we show that (1) the minimal dense linearly ordered extension of M is hereditarily paracompact, but not monotonically D; (2) the minimal closed linearly ordered extension of M is monotonically D; (3) if the space X is a D-space (resp., a monotone D-space), then so is its Alexandroff duplicate space A(X) and thus A(M) is monotonically D.

Abstract:We show, in a certain specific sense, that both the density and the cardinality of a Hausdorff space are related to the "degree" to which the space is nonregular. It was shown by Šapirovskiĭ that d(X)≤πχ(X)c(X) for a regular space X and the author observed this holds if the space is only quasiregular. We generalize this result to the class of all Hausdorff spaces by introducing the nonquasiregularity degree nq(X) , which is countable when X is quasiregular, and showing d(X)≤πχ(X)c(X)nq(X) for any Hausdorff space X . This demonstrates that the degree to which a space is nonquasiregular has a fundamental and direct connection to its density and, ultimately, its cardinality. Importantly, if X is Hausdorff then nq(X) is "small" in the sense that nq(X)≤min⁡{ψc(X),L(X),pct(X)} . This results in a unified proof of both Šapirovskiĭ's density bound for regular spaces and Sun's bound πχ(X)c(X)ψc(X) for the cardinality of a Hausdorff space X . A consequence is an improved bound for the cardinality of a Hausdorff space. An example is given of a compact, Hausdorff space X for which our new bound is a strict improvement over Sun's bound.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that if 2(lambda) < kappa and A subset of [kappa](lambda) is a MADF then the generalized Mrowka space psi(A\B) has no G(lambda) -diagonal, where B subset of A and vertical bar B vertical bar <= lambda. If a topological space X has a regular G(lambda) -diagonal and a local decreasing base of cardinality chi(X) for each x is an element of X, then vertical bar X vertical bar <= 2(dc(X).)(chi(X).lambda) , where dc(X) is the discrete cellularity of X and chi(X) is the character of X. As a corollary, we prove that if X is a DCCC (and hence, DC(omega(1)), weakly Lindelof or star Lindelof) first countable space with a regular G(delta)-diagonal then vertical bar X vertical bar <= 2(omega), which gives a positive answer to a question in [17]. Finally, we give another counterexample to a question of Ginsburg and Woods ([6]), which has nicer properties than the counterexamples constructed in [15] and [16].

Abstract:A matrix space of size $m\times n$ is a linear subspace of the linear space of $m\times n$ matrices over a field $\mathbb{F}$. The rank of a matrix space is defined as the maximal rank over matrices in this space. A matrix space $\mathcal{A}$ is called rank-critical, if any matrix space which properly contains it has rank strictly greater than that of $\mathcal{A}$. In this note, we first exhibit a necessary and sufficient condition for a matrix space $\mathcal{A}$ to be rank-critical, when $\mathbb{F}$ is large enough. This immediately implies the sufficient condition for a matrix space to be rank-critical by Draisma (Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 38(5):764--776, 2006), albeit requiring the field to be slightly larger. We then study rank-critical spaces in the context of compression and primitive matrix spaces. We first show that every rank-critical matrix space can be decomposed into a rank-critical compression matrix space and a rank-critical primitive matrix space. We then prove, using our necessary and sufficient condition, that the block-diagonal direct sum of two rank-critical matrix spaces is rank-critical if and only if both matrix spaces are primitive, when the field is large enough.

Abstract:We show that every regular T1 submeta-Lindelöf space of cardinality ω1 is D under MA+¬CH, which answers a question posed by Gruenhage (2011) [9]. Borges (1991) [5] asked if every monotonically normal paracompact space is a D-space, we give a characterization of paracompactness for monotonically normal spaces, which may be of some use in solving this problem.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to show the following result: For every integer $n\geq 2$ there is a countable orderable group such that its space of orders is countable and has Cantor-Bendixson rank $n$. We show this by explicitly constructing a family of orderable groups with the desired properties.

By means of the addition theorem and the theory of remainders,the following properties are established: (1)if an s-space X is the union of a countable family of metrizable subspaces,then X is sequential;(2)if G is a non-locally compact topological group with a compactification bG such that Y =bG\G is hereditarily an s-space, then either G is separable and metrizable, or G is σ-compact, which generalize and improve some results about s-spaces by Arhangel'skii.
Topological rigidity of small RCD(K,N) spaces with maximal rank

Abstract:For a polycyclic group $\Lambda$, $\text{rank} ( \Lambda )$ is defined as the number of $\mathbb{Z}$ factors in a polycyclic decomposition of $\Lambda$. For a finitely generated group $G$, $\text{rank} (G)$ is defined as the infimum of $ \text{rank} (\Lambda )$ among finite index polycyclic subgroups $\Lambda \leq G$. For a compact $\text{RCD} (K,N)$ space $(X,\mathsf{d}, \mathfrak{m})$ with $\text{diam} (X) \leq \varepsilon (K,N)$, the rank of $\pi_1(X)$ is at most $N$. In this note we show that in case of equality, $X$ is homeomorphic to an infranilmanifold, generalizing to the non-smooth setting a result by Kapovitch--Wilking. We also fill a gap in the proof that if $\pi_1(X) = \mathbb{Z}^N$, then $X$ is bi-Hölder homeomorphic to a flat torus (diffeomorphic in the smooth case).

Abstract:The pinning down number $ {pd}(X)$ of a topological space $X$ is the smallest cardinal $\kappa$ such that for any neighborhood assignment $U:X\to \tau_X$ there is a set $A\in [X]^\kappa$ with $A\cap U(x)\ne\emptyset$ for all $x\in X$. Clearly, c$(X) \le {pd}(X) \le {d}(X)$. Here we prove that the following statements are equivalent: (1) $2^\kappa<\kappa^{+\omega}$ for each cardinal $\kappa$; (2) ${d}(X)={pd}(X)$ for each Hausdorff space $X$; (3) ${d}(X)={pd}(X)$ for each 0-dimensional Hausdorff space $X$. This answers two questions of Banakh and Ravsky. The dispersion character $\Delta(X)$ of a space $X$ is the smallest cardinality of a non-empty open subset of $X$. We also show that if ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$ then $X$ has an open subspace $Y$ with ${pd}(Y)<{d}(Y)$ and $|Y| = \Delta(Y)$, moreover the following three statements are equiconsistent: (i) There is a singular cardinal $\lambda$ with $pp(\lambda)>\lambda^+$, i.e. Shelah's Strong Hypothesis fails; (ii) there is a 0-dimensional Hausdorff space $X$ such that $|X|=\Delta(X)$ is a regular cardinal and ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$; (iii) there is a topological space $X$ such that $|X|=\Delta(X)$ is a regular cardinal and ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$. We also prove that $\bullet$ ${d}(X)={pd}(X)$ for any locally compact Hausdorff space $X$; $\bullet$ for every Hausdorff space $X$ we have $|X|\le 2^{2^{{pd}(X)}}$ and ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$ implies $\Delta(X)< 2^{2^{{pd}(X)}}$; $\bullet$ for every regular space $X$ we have $\min\{\Delta(X),\, w(X)\}\le 2^{{pd}(X)}\,$ and ${d}(X)<2^{{pd}(X)},\,$ moreover ${pd}(X)<{d}(X)$ implies $\,\Delta(X)< {2^{{pd}(X)}}$.

New bounds on the cardinality of Hausdorff spaces and regular spaces

Abstract:Using weaker versions of the cardinal function $\psi_c(X)$, we derive a series of new bounds for the cardinality of Hausdorff spaces and regular spaces that do not involve $\psi_c(X)$ nor its variants at all. For example, we show if $X$ is regular then $|X|\leq 2^{c(X)^{\pi\chi(X)}}$ and $|X|\leq 2^{c(X)\pi\chi(X)^{ot(X)}}$, where the cardinal function $ot(X)$, introduced by Tkachenko, has the property $ot(X)\leq\min\{t(X),c(X)\}$. It follows from the latter that a regular space with cellularity at most $\mathfrak{c}$ and countable $\pi$-character has cardinality at most $2^\mathfrak{c}$. For a Hausdorff space $X$ we show $|X|\leq 2^{d(X)^{\pi\chi(X)}}$, $|X|\leq d(X)^{\pi\chi(X)^{ot(X)}}$, and $|X|\leq 2^{\pi w(X)^{dot(X)}}$, where $dot(X)\leq\min\{ot(X),\pi\chi(X)\}$. None of these bounds involve $\psi_c(X)$ or $\psi(X)$. By introducing the cardinal functions $w\psi_c(X)$ and $d\psi_c(X)$ with the property $w\psi_c(X)d\psi_c(X)\leq\psi_c(X)$ for a Hausdorff space $X$, we show $|X|\leq\pi\chi(X)^{c(X)w\psi_c(X)}$ if $X$ is regular and $|X|\leq\pi\chi(X)^{c(X)d\psi_c(X)w\psi_c(X)}$ if $X$ is Hausdorff. This improves results of Sapirovskii and Sun. It is also shown that if $X$ is Hausdorff then $|X|\leq 2^{d(X)w\psi_c(X)}$, which appears to be new even in the case where $w\psi_c(X)$ is replaced with $\psi_c(X)$. Compact examples show that $\psi(X)$ cannot be replaced with $d\psi_c(X)w\psi_c(X)$ in the bound $2^{\psi(X)}$ for the cardinality of a compact Hausdorff space $X$. Likewise, $\psi(X)$ cannot be replaced with $d\psi_c(X)w\psi_c(X)$ in the Arhangel'skii-Sapirovskii bound $2^{L(X)t(X)\psi(X)}$ for the cardinality of a Hausdorff space $X$. Finally, we make several observations concerning homogeneous spaces in this connection.
