Abstract:The notion of the “Self” is one of the most critical issues in contemporary cognitive science. Whether the self is a single and independent real entity or a collection of constantly changing experiences has been at the core of debates between the substance theory and the illusion theory. Compared to the neglect of this issue in Western tradition studies, the meticulous practice of mindfulness/awareness in Eastern research traditions has long focused on this contradiction. This paper navigates the intricate dimensions of the “Self” by weaving together the Oriental framework of the five aggregates with the Middle Way, the principles of constructivism, and the empirical methodologies of experimental philosophy. This approach bridges the gap by synthesizing introspective first-person experiences with objective third-person scientific observations to enrich the understanding of self-constructivism. The implications of these findings extend into the practical realms of psychology and philosophy, offering a scaffold for future research to elucidate the multifaceted nature of the self further.

Abstract:The"abstract human being"is the theoretical basis of "realistic individual".Marx’s criticism on the"abstract human being"began with"1844 economy philosophy manuscript"published in "The German Ideology",which presented the development of the"realistic individual"from a simple conception to a mature one."Realistic individual"is specifically identified in the process of production and relevant social relations.The basic characteristics of "realistic individual"can be understood from several integrations: natural and social,perceptual and rational,interests and needs,material production and human life itself.As a philosophical conception,"realistic individual"is quite abstract."The people"is the logical extension under certain historical conditions of "realistic individual",which tends to be abstract."People in civil society"is a"regression"and concrete manifestation of"realistic individual"in the contemporarily social and political life and is also the reflection of time spirit.Reshaping the "people in civil society"and constructing civil society are the request of the time.

Abstract:The requirement for “self-development” through the ceaseless acquisition of skills and credentials has long been central for young adults in China. However, due to the multiple and unpredictable demands of social institutions, many social actors also prime the cultivation of a self that does not succumb to immediate occupational and material impositions. In this article, I describe how young adults in a second-tier city pursue a model of personhood that brings together socio-economic competence and singular individuality. These individuals aspire to expand their range of experiences and their spatial mobility, thereby reifying an image of a self that transcends narrow social roles and networks. Drawing on Jean-Paul Sartre's dualistic philosophy, I analyse young adults’ attempts to realise individualised selves by destabilising their ontological ground. I argue that this phenomenon is magnified in China through widespread notions of a “moral crisis” and its supposable suppression of social actors’ agency.

Abstract:In his Mandala model of the self, Taiwanese scholar Kwang-Kuo Hwang sees each human being as a combination or intersection of private individual and social person, and also of knowledge and action. To further elaborate the model-with a particular emphasis on teaching/learning, the development of the ideal self and spiritual transcendence-this article will explore the psychological process of self-cultivation in the light of traditional Confucian thinking, which means keeping a balance between inner/outer and self/other. The Neo-Confucian thinker Zhongsha Mou's theories of "the awareness of unexpected developments" and his meditation/cognitive thinking opposition will also be discussed. The analyzed sources will include the traditional Confucian classics (the Four Books and Liji, or Classic of Rites) and especially the "Lessons for Learning (Xue-Ji)" in the Classic of Rites (Liji), along with the relevant textual research. Based upon a cultural-semantic analysis of these classics as well as of Hwang's central ideas, the author attempts to further conceptualize the process of cultivating the ideal self in Confucian education.
A Treatise on Yangming’s Philosophy of Mind Based on His Idea of the “Equilibrium before the Feelings are Aroused”

Abstract:Wang Yangming believes that the equilibrium before the feelings are aroused has two manifestations: one is the original substance of the mind, the pure "Principle of Nature," which he calls "the present." The other is a static and balanced mental status, free from any emotional or reflective constraints, which he calls "the absent." The original substance of the mind is the state of being broad and extremely impartial, unattached by any principle or concealed by any object. Therefore, when the feelings are aroused, each and all attain due measure and degree. At this moment, the "Principle of Nature" is automatically "present," serving as guidance as one engages himself in his activities. This is Wang Yangming’s teaching of "the present comes out of the absent." As for the ensuing praxis, one has to guard the integrity of one’s mind to achieve such a status.

Abstract:From text to image with the method ofDebate Between Words and Meaningof metaphysics in the Wei and Jin dynasties, the original meaning of Guo Xiang’s self-transformation in the realm of xuan-ming could be regarded as followings: each of the individual motions and changes according to it-self nature, which was called Du-hua（Self-transformation）;and the phenomenal world, infinitely complicated and ever-changing,was formed by the relationship network interweaving of countless individual motions. If we probe into the ultimate motivation of its motions and changes, whether from the outside or from the inside, we will face a vague scene, which was called Xuan-ming or the Realm of Xuan-ming. From the perspective of Ben-mo and Ti-Yong thoughts, the aggregation of the personality of all things could be regarded as the ontology of the phenomenal world, so Guo Xiang’s thought could be called nature ontology. The purpose of Guo Xiang’s idea was to deny the theory of Destiny（the origin of the universe） and the Divine right of the king, and took the needs of human nature as the basis of the social system, so as to identify the principal political position of the people, and laid a philosophical foundation for the theory and practice of autonomy of scholarly society in the Wei and Jin dynasties.
A Review of Studies on the Trend of Thought in the Chinese National Character Transformation since 1990s

Abstract:The authors maintain that much has been accomplished in this research area so far,and four aspects in the literature can be identified.They are: What are the historical mechanisms for the trend of thought in national character transformation? Which is the ultimate care of this trend of thought,nationals or nation? What is the attitude of the thinkers involved to the western and Chinese cultures? How to classify different schools according to their different concerns and stands? A concise explanation of these aspects are offered in this paper.Limitations and values worthy of further analysis are also discussed.

"Effort of Mind" and Wang Yang-ming's Aesthetics by Experience

Abstract:Wang Yang-ming's theory and his aesthetics reformed the traditional Confucianism in the sense that it elevated the inquiry of the human mind in its original substance sense. Within the Neo-Confucianism, WANG Yang-ming converted Zhu Xi's concept of ″the reason of the heaven″(Tianli) into that of ″the internal conscience″(Liangzhi), advocating exploring the relationship between human beings and the physical world from the perspective of the substance of the human mind; ″the internal conscience″ exists in its original substance (Benti) sense prior to human mind, while the attainment of the former depends much on culture or mind self-education, i.e. effort (Gongfu). The two categories are mutually dependent and indispensable, which form a unified organic structure.To sum up, Wang Yang-ming's aesthetics emphasizes the original substance of human mind; the unity between the objective world and the perceiver, the former cannot exist without the latter; the appreciation of the beautiful things cannot be finalized without the human mind; a sense of beauty can be realized only through intuition, subjective experience and happiness of the mind; the capability of appreciating the beautiful things can only be cultivated through simultaneous practical experience and aesthetic education. This kind of approach to aesthetics does not distinguish the subject and the object, or the perceiver and the world; neither does it separate reason from experience. Unlike the Western aesthetics, it does not treat the physical world as the main object of inquiry without the involvement of the human life.Wang Yang-ming's philosophy focuses on ″the effort of the mind″. According to his theory, conscience reveals itself truly and vividly through an exploring experience of the human innate moral nature and its instinctive realization triggered by a specific situation. This ″effort of the mind″ flavours Wang Yang-ming's aesthetics with life instinct and direct sense perception: his aesthetic perspective is based on mental experience incited by a particular situation; his aesthetic approach is instinctive realization which is not absolute, not ready at hand, and with no handicap of the theory that views reason as intrinsic and constant; and finally, his aesthetic ideology eventually converts from ethical aesthetics of reasonning of Neo-Confucianism to the aesthetics of mental experience.

Abstract:Between the new Chinese-style modernized path and the new form of human civilization exists the civilization-valued self-consistency in the people’s nature of subjectivity, developmental comprehensiveness, and goal orientation; and in terms of the historic essential attributes about inheritance and active action, exists the self-consistency between them on the historical process from the Chinese nation’s getting up, to getting rich, to getting strong; in terms of the theoretical attributes aimed at the all-round development of human beings, exists the self-consistency between them on the mutual innovation and mutual growth; in adhering to the people-centered practical attribute, exists the self-consistency between them following “people first” as the most fundamental value. In the internal relationship of combining the two into one, a unique and systematic theoretical system is formed, reflecting its interpretive system constructed on the logical self-consistency.

Abstract:Xunzi insists that human nature is evil.According to Xunzi,the meanings of emo-tion(Qing,情),nature(Xing,性)and desire(Yu,欲)are generally similar.They all manifest as a love of profit and the desire to obtain it.Therefore,a person cannot love morality intrinsical-ly if following his inborn nature.However,the inborn nature(or desire)can be shaped and transformed according to Xunzi.Through this transformation of inborn nature,a person can cre-ate the motivation to pursue morality and ritual principles."T ransforming the inborn nature and developing the acquired nature"(Hua xing qi wei,化性起伪)is a way to realize this moral trans-formation."Transforming the inborn nature"(Hua xing,化性)could modify manifestation pat-terns of inborn nature and desires of a person."Developing the acquired nature"(Qi wei,起伪), which contains changes of one's cognition,deliberation,evaluation,believes and so on,is a fur-ther step after"Transforming the inborn nature"(Hua xing,化性).Because of the influence of this process,one would question himself on his desires and the objects of desires,such as"why to pursue","how to pursue","whether to pursue".And therefore,it then makes creation of new motivation and transformation to moral life possible.

Abstract:Generally speaking,Yangming philosophy of the mind advocates self-disciplined morality and criticizes the charitable deeds aiming at happiness.However,while preaching the ethical standards,Yangming philosophy of the mind often tells people that "ghosts and gods" will punish or praise them according to their deeds.The paper aims to reveal the following three points: 1.The moral-instruction for good deeds in the post-Yangming period is closely related to the philosophy of the mind with an obvious religious orientation;2.The reinterpretation of the Buddhist idea of retribution within the perceptive system of Buddhism is a key idea of the retribution-talking Confucians in the late Ming dynasty.3.Judging from the "self-criticism" practice of the philosophers of the mind,the discussion of "turning the disaster into happiness" and the combination of religions with Confucianism are a turning point in the ideological changes in the late Ming dynasty.

Abstract:Since 1978, contemporary Chinese philosophy has entered a new stage of development. The last two decades have witnessed three hot topics: "practice," "man," and "Cultural Heritage Studies." They reflect the following major transitions: (1) from practice as a standard to practical materialism, (2) from humanism to the Study of Man, and (3) from Culture mania to [Chinese] Cultural Heritage Studies mania. The first topic is an expression of the reflection and innovation going on in Marxist philosophy; the issues of the Study of Man and Cultural Heritage Studies reflect the influences of modern Western philosophy and traditional Chinese philosophy. The interaction of Marxist philosophy, modern Western philosophy, and traditional Chinese philosophy is not only the major theme in contemporary Chinese philosophy, but also its promising prospect. Therefore, research into their interaction is of theoretical, as well as practical, significance.

Abstract:Based on the construction of the "Taiji Model of Confucian Self" that aims to explain self-structure, the progression of self-cultivation and the dominion of person-making in the context of Chinese Confucian culture, according to the ideas of Taoism and Buddhism, the present study develops the "Taiji Model of Taoist Self" and the "Taiji Model of Buddhist Self" and identifies four realms of Taoist self-cultivation and five realms of Buddhist self-cultivation. In light of the Taiji Model of Taoist Self, self-structure can be divided into the soft self (the Yin part) and the hard self (the Yang part). The Taiji Model of Taoist Self splits the process of self-cultivation into four realms: suren (vulgarian), xianren (solon), shengren (saint), and zhenren (immortal). The Taiji Model of Buddhist Self splits self-structure into the dusty self (the Yin part) and the pure self (the Yang part) and divides the process of self-cultivation into five realms: Humans and Heaven, Arhat, Pratyekabuddha, Bodhisattva, and Buddha.

Abstract:Confucianism has long required people to criticize themselves.Confucius believes that only those who are hard on themselves,but lenient on others can stay away from hatred.The precondition of self-criticism is continuous introspection.A gentleman is always careful in dealing with other people's errors,and not to rub salt into their woods.Confucianism,however,also believes that kind criticism and reprehension help others correct their mistakes.When it comes to other people,one should try to see their strengths and merits when they commit errors;when it comes to oneself,however,one should try to find out their own shortcomings and deficiencies when accomplishing something.A gentleman criticizes in an appropriate way.In order to help others do the right thing,a gentleman should kindly criticize the wrong-doers without hurting their feelings or causing bitterness and hatred.When helping others,different approaches should be taken for different people,and one shouldn't expect too much of the person being helped.Confucianism also advocates the virtue of criticizing others without actual criticism and helping others to do good without uttering the words.

Abstract:The Chinese people lay stress on intuition and the method of imaginative mind that is more irrational, while the thought popularized by political power is rational. The irrational factor in this rational thought had been growing daily in the process of introspection under the influence of Buddhism. Till the middle and later period of Ming Dynasty, when economy was developed, daily life of food and clothe were emphasized, and the social orientation was utilitarian, the threshold of ration was broken through. Geng Dingxiang attacked Li Zhi, and led a wholesome change in value, theory of human nature, ethics and aesthetics. The Chinese thought of humanity and aesthetics has completed a historical transition from the rational to the irrational. This process is identified by the conception of self-life, which is transformed from family ties to non-family ties, the conception of equality, which is transformed from hierarchy to non-authority, the conception of humanistic private interest, which is transformed from humanistic justice to non-justice, the conception of sexual desire ontology, which is transformed from ethical ontology to non-ethical ontology, a conception of the beauty of frankness and directness, which is transformed from the beauty of mediocrity to non-mediocrity.
