Abstract:This article focuses on modelling above and below-ground mass loss and nitrogen (N) dynamics based on the wooden dowels (Gonystylus bancanus [Miq.] Kurz) of the decadal Long-term Intersite Decomposition Experiment (LIDET) data. These dowels were placed at 27 locations across North and Central America, involving tropical, temperate and boreal forests, grasslands, wetlands and the tundra. The dowel, inserted vertically into the soil with one half remaining exposed to the air, revealed fast mass and N losses under warm to humid conditions, and slow losses under wet as well as cold to dry conditions. The model formulation, referred to as the Wood Decomposition Model, or WDM, related these losses to (i) mean annual precipitation, mean monthly January and July air temperatures, and (ii) mean annual actual evapotranspiration (AET) at each location. The resulting calibrations conformed well to the time-in-field averages for mass remaining by location: R2=0.83 and 0.90 for the lower and upper parts, respectively. These values dropped, respectively, to 0.41 and 0.55 for the N concentrations, and to 0.28 and 0.43 for N remaining. These reductions likely refer to error propagation and to as yet unresolved variations in N transference into and out of the wood specific to each individual dowel location. Recalibrating the model parameters by ecosystem type reduced the R2 values for actual versus best-fitted mass loss by about 0.15. Doing the same without location- or ecosystem-specific adjustments reduced the R2 values further, by about 0.3.
Longitudinal Variation of Ring Width, Wood Density and Basal Area Increment in 26-Year-old Loblolly Pine (pinus Taeda) Trees

Abstract:Longitudinal variations in select wood quality parameters were examined in 26-year-old loblolly pine trees planted in Anhui Province, China. Wood density and ring width were measured from cross-sections of different heights of merchantable stems. The average ring width decreased from the base to 1.3 m, then increased to the maximum at 7.6 m, and thereafter reduced with stem height. The longitudinal patterns varied with cambial age in ring width. The coefficient of variation in ring widths along the stem height was greater than 21% at the cambial age 5-8 years and 9-12 years, and small variations were observed in other cambial age groups. The average wood density declined from 1.3 m to 7.6 m and then slightly increased with increasing stem height. The wood density showed great variation at different growth stages below 7.6 m, but varied less above 7.6 m. Basal area increment (BAT) gradually increased with increasing ring number (from the pith to the bark) at different stem heights, and markedly reduced after the 22nd ring. These results indicate that the longitudinal variations of wood density, ring width and BAI in loblolly pine are greatly affected by cambial age. The detailed information of the wood properties along stem heights could be useful to wood utilization of loblolly pine.
Patterns and Determinants of Wood Physical and Mechanical Properties Across Major Tree Species in China

Abstract:The physical and mechanical properties of wood affect the growth and development of trees, and also act as the main criteria when determining wood usage. Our understanding on patterns and controls of wood physical and mechanical properties could provide benefits for forestry management and bases for wood application and forest tree breeding. However, current studies on wood properties mainly focus on wood density and ignore other wood physical properties. In this study, we established a comprehensive database of wood physical properties across major tree species in China. Based on this database, we explored spatial patterns and driving factors of wood properties across major tree species in China. Our results showed that(i) compared with wood density, air-dried density, tangential shrinkage coefficient and resilience provide more accuracy and higher explanation power when used as the evaluation index of wood physical properties.(ii) Among life form, climatic and edaphic variables, life form is the dominant factor shaping spatial patterns of wood physical properties, climatic factors the next, and edaphic factors have the least effects, suggesting that the effects of climatic factors on spatial variations of wood properties are indirectly induced by their effects on species distribution.
Modelling variation in wood density within and among trees in stands of New Zealand-grown radiata pine

Abstract:BackgroundDensity is an important wood property due to its correlation with other wood properties such as stiffness and pulp yield, as well as being central to the accounting of carbon sequestration in forests. It is influenced by site, silviculture, and genetics, and models that predict the variation in wood density within and among trees are required by forest managers so that they can develop strategies to achieve certain wood density targets. The aim of the study presented here was to develop a wood density model for radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) growing in New Zealand.MethodsThe model was developed using an extensive historical dataset containing wood density values from increment cores and stem discs that were obtained from almost 10,000 trees at over 300 sites. The model consists of two sub-models: (1) a sub-model for predicting the radial variation in breast-height wood density and (2) a sub-model for predicting the distribution of density vertically within the stem.ResultsThe radial variation in breast-height wood density was predicted as a function of either ring number or both ring number and ring width, with the latter model better accounting for the effects of stand spacing. Additional model components were also developed in order to convert from annual ring density values to a whole-disc density, predict log density from disc densities, and account for the variation in wood density among individual trees within in a stand. The model can be used to predict the density of discs or logs cut from any position within a tree and can utilise measured outerwood density values to predict the density by log height for a particular stand. It can be used in conjunction with outerwood density to predict wood density distributions by logs for stands of any specified geographic location and management regime and is designed to be able to incorporate genetic adjustments at a later stage.ConclusionsThe analysis has confirmed and quantified much of the previous knowledge on the factors that affect the variation in wood density in radiata pine, particularly the influences of site factors and silviculture. It has also quantified the extent and patterns of variation in wood density within and among trees.

Abstract:Wood density (WD) is an important quality and functional trait of wood. However, despite the relationships between WD and abiotic factors being important to model or predict spatial distributions of functional traits, as well as responses of vegetation to climate changes, in current Earth system models or dynamic global vegetation models (ESMs/DGVMs), WD is often oversimplified, being defined as a globally uniform constant either for all plant functional types (PFTs) or for each individual PFT. Such oversimplifications may lead to simulation biases in the morphology of woody PFTs, as well as ecosystem transition and vegetation–atmosphere interactions. Moreover, existing conclusions about the relationships between WD and abiotic factors drawn from field observations remain mixed, making model parameterization improvements difficult. This study systematically investigated the influences of climate and soil factors on WD across various PFTs. Optimal fitting models for predicting WD within each PFT were then constructed by utilizing our collated global database of 138 604 observations. For WDs of tree PFTs, climate emerges as a more influential factor than soil characteristics, whereas for shrub PFTs the effects of climate and soil are of equivalent significance. Across all six PFTs, correlation coefficients between predictions by fitting models and observed WD range from 0.49 to 0.93. The predicted and observed WD exhibit good agreement across climate space. It is expected that the incorporation of our research findings into DGVMs will improve the simulation of tree height and forest fractional coverage, particularly in the central forest areas and forest transition zones.

Abstract:Thuja occidentalis L. wood is desirabl, e for wooden structures that require wood density uniformity. Wood density is a wood quality indicator related to numerous morphological, mechanical, physiological, and ecological properties. This study aimed to investigate the regional, site, and tree-to-tree variations of T. occidentalis wood density and growth components through the analysis of X-ray densitometer data. A total of 287 trees were randomly sampled from 11 sites in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue regions in Québec, Canada. The average ring density at breast height was 356 kg m−3, with a small difference between earlywood and latewood (167 kg m−3), indicating a relatively uniform wood. Ring density and width varied significantly between the Abitibi and the Témiscamingue regions, mainly in the juvenile wood. Trees from the Abitibi region showed higher ring density than those in the Témiscamingue region. In contrast, the ring width was higher in the Témiscamingue region. Site, tree, and cambial age significantly (p < 0.001) affected wood density and growth components. However, the largest variation is due to the tree-to-tree variation, accounting for about 15%–31% of the total variation. Compared to ring widths, ring density components showed a considerably smaller tree-to-tree variation and higher variation (7.1%) with cambial age than ring widths (0.6%). Ring width correlated positively and significantly (p < 0.001) with average temperature and annual precipitation, while ring density correlated negatively and significantly (p < 0.001) with average temperature and annual precipitation.

Variation in Wood Density and Tracheid Length in Pinus patula grown in Zimbabwe

Abstract:Within-tree variation of wood density was studied for 14-and 25-year-old Pinus patula Schiede & Deppe trees grown at two plantation sites in Zimbabwe. Three trees of each age per site were selected and disc samples obtained at six relative height levels. A diametric strip was prepared from each sample disc and cut into two sample strips. Conditioned density was measured along the first strip using an x-ray densitometer. The second strip was pulped while clamped between perforated plates and tracheid length measured with the Kajaani FS 200 fibre analyser. At both sites, 25-year-old trees had higher density and longer tracheids than 14-year-old trees (0,557 and 0,544 g/cm3 as against 0,476 and 0,492 g/cm3; 3,55 and 3,84 mm against 3,48 mm and 3,07 mm), There were minimal differences in wood density between sites, but tracheid length showed substantial differences between sites. Wood density and tracheid length increased with growth ring age, with a rapid increase occurring in the first 14 years for wood density and in the first 10 years for tracheid length. Radial increase for the whole stem, for all the trees, was about 50% for density and 250% for tracheid length. Wood density decreased with height, and the overall decrease, from 0% to 90% height level was about 20% for all the trees. Tracheid length increased from the butt, reaching a maximum at 10 to 30% height level before decreasing to a minimum at the apex. For all the trees, tracheid length at the 0% and 90% height levels were respectively about 25 and 20% shorter than at the 30% height level. Predictive models of within-tree wood density and tracheid length in P. patula were developed using growth ring age and relative tree height. Results indicated a cylindrical symmetry distribution for wood density and a conical symmetry distribution for tracheid length.

Abstract:Defining and quantifying biomass–density relationships in dense plant stands has been a long-standing issue in both theoretical and empirical studies. Most existing/traditional studies focus on whole plant individuals, without considering different plant components (e.g., stem, branch and leaf). However, the analysis of biomass–density relationships for different plant parts is linked to those for whole plants, and thus important for understanding plant strategies for utilizing resources and community dynamics. In our study, we investigated standing stem ( M S ), branch ( M B ) and leaf ( M L ) biomass–density relationships, across a range of forest communities in China. The results showed that there was no constant predicted value (e.g., −1/2 or −1/3 for M S ; −1/2, −1/3 or 0 for M B and M L ) that can describe all the relationships, and that the scaling exponents for stem, branch and leaf biomass varied across different forest types. In particular, standing leaf biomass (leaf biomass per unit area) was not constant in these forest communities. Furthermore, stem biomass–density lines were steeper than corresponding branch and leaf lines across most of these forest communities.
General allometric equations and biomass allocation of Pinus massoniana trees on a regional scale in southern China

Abstract:Applying allometric equations in combination with forest inventory data is an effective approach to use when qualifying forest biomass and carbon storage on a regional scale. The objectives of this study were to (1) develop general allometric tree component biomass equations and (2) investigate tree biomass allocation patterns for Pinus massoniana, a principal tree species native to southern China, by applying 197 samples across 20 site locations. The additive allometric equations utilized to compute stem, branch, needle, root, aboveground, and total tree biomass were developed by nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression. Results show that the relative proportion of stem biomass to tree biomass increased while the contribution of canopy biomass to tree biomass decreased as trees continued to grow through time. Total root biomass was a large biomass pool in itself, and its relative proportion to tree biomass exhibited a slight increase with tree growth. Although equations employing stem diameter at breast height (dbh) alone as a predictor could accurately predict stem, aboveground, root, and total tree biomass, they were poorly fitted to predict the canopy biomass component. The inclusion of the tree height (H) variable either slightly improved or did not in any way increase model fitness. Validation results demonstrate that these equations are suitable to estimate stem, aboveground, and total tree biomass across a broad range of P. massoniana stands on a regional scale.

Variation trends of wood property along stem in Salix suchowensis

Abstract:The intra-individual variations of the basic density and the contents of main wood chemical compounds, inclu-ding cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, along stems of S. suchowensis were measured in this study. Statistical analyses revealed that the basic density and the main wood compounds along the stem varied as following:the wood basic density decreased from stem base to stem top, in range of 0.331 2-0.385 4 g/cm3 for the measured samples. The contents of cel-lulose, lignin and hemicellulose were in ranges of 48.69%-56.89%,12.58%-16.42%,19.83%-23.76%, respectively, for the measured samples. Contents of cellulose and hemicellulose were found to decrease from stem base to stem top in all the measured samples. By contrast, lignin content exhibited a different variation trendency. For all measured samples, the lowest content appeared in the middle of the stem, and it increased towards both ends, with the highest lignin content appeared at the top of the stem. However, ANOVA statistics indicated that the basic density and the main wood chemical compounds varied insignificantly along the stems within individuals, while they varied significantly among different indi-viduals.
Analysis of species and phylogenetic β diversity drivers in the Masson pine forests in Suichang, Zhejiang Province

Abstract:Habitat filtering and dispersal limitation are the main ecological processes affecting species composition variation (β diversity) in forest communities, but their relative importance in subtropical Masson pine (Pinus massoniana) forests remains unclear. Jointly analysis of how phylogenetic and species β diversity varies with habitat factors and geographic distance is critical to understand the roles played by historical and current ecological processes in shaping the regional biodiversity. In this study, 37 Masson pine forest plots in Suichang County, Zhejiang Province were selected to analyze the species and phylogenetic β diversities, and the main ecological mechanisms driving the differences of species composition among communities were explored. Species β diversity index (Bray-Curtis) and phylogenetic β diversity index (the mean phylogenetic dissimilarity, Dnn; the mean nearest taxon distance, Dpw) were calculated, and their correlation with habitat factors including soil and topography, as well as geographical distance were analyzed. The relative importance of habitat factors and geographical distance on species and phylogenetic β diversity was analyzed by variance partitioning. In addition, two life stages (divided by diameter class) and growth form were for the same analyses. The results were as follows: (1) Bray-Curtis index significantly correlated with soil factors, topographic factors and geographical distance. Dnn correlated with geographical distance only. Dpw correlated with soil factors and geographical distance. (2) The explanatory degree of habitat factors to Bray-Curtis and Dpw was higher than that of geographical distance. (3) For species diversity, habitat factors could better explain Bray-Curtis of both life stages than geographical distance. For phylogenetic diversity, geographical distance could better explain Dnn and Dpw of sapling stage, while habitat factors were more likely to explain Dpw of adult stage. To conclude, The results show that habitat filtering is the main ecological mechanism driving species and phylogenetic β diversity of Masson pine forests in this region. Dispersal limitation plays a dominant role in the β diversity of Masson pine forests only at the sapling stage. The most important finding of this research is that the main mechanism drives for species and phylogenetic β diversity in Masson pine forests are different, which highlights the necessity of joint analysis of species and phylogenetic β diversity. This research also suggests that the main ecological mechanism drives β diversity may change as plants shift across different growth stages.
Radial Variation Studies on Wood Properties of Populus Deltoides Parents and Their Hybrids

Abstract:The radial variation and the genetic variation of wood properties between the parents and offspring of Populus deltoides were studied in this work. The chemical composition, density, and anatomical characteristics of Populus deltoides cl. ‘Danhong’ and its offspring exhibited the phenomenon of transgressive segregation. The chemical compositions of the parents and offspring were decreased in several attributes (benzene alcohol extract, hemicelluloses, lignin) with the increase of the cambial age. Moreover, the fibre length, fibre width, ratio of fibre length to width, and wall thickness to lumen ratio of parents and offspring were increased with cambial age. In addition, the densities of parents and offspring were increased with the increase of cambial age. There were significant differences in wood properties among Populus deltoides and its hybrids. These results indicated that Populus deltoides cl. ‘Danhong’ could be considered as pulp material and Populus deltoides cl. ‘Nanyang’ as building material. According to the radial variation rule of each material character, the rotation cutting period can be selected as years 7 or 8.
Spatial Distribution and Sustainable Development of Living Woody and Coarse Woody Debris in Warm-Temperate Deciduous Broadleaved Secondary Forests in China

Abstract:The investigation into the spatial patterns of living woody (LWD) and coarse woody debris (CWD) in warm-temperate deciduous broadleaved secondary forests serves as a foundational exploration of the mechanisms governing coexistence and mortality in forest ecosystems. The complete spatial randomness null model (CSR) was employed to analyze spatial distribution patterns, with the independent component null model (IC) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) utilized to elucidate spatial correlations and topographic influences. All three models were applied to LWD and CWD across various size classes within a 20-hectare plot in the Dongling Mountains. The study's findings indicate that both LWD and CWD predominantly exhibited aggregated patterns, transitioning to a random distribution as the size class increased. Both increasing abundance and maximum diameter at breast height (DBH) also have a significant influence on the distribution of species. Notably, rare species exhibited higher aggregation compared to common and abundant species. The spatial correlation results between LWD and CWD across various size classes predominantly showed positive correlations and uncorrelated patterns within the sampled plots. CCA analysis further revealed that elevation, convexity, slope, and aspect significantly influenced the spatial patterns of LWD and CWD across different size classes. Within the sample site, trees display a tendency to grow and die in clusters. Biotic factors have a more significant influence on species distribution than abiotic factors.

Abstract:Carbon fraction (CF) of trees is essential for quantifying forest carbon (C) stocks. Considerable attention has been paid to CF variations at various levels with the exception of inter- and intra-growth rings. Herein, the inter- and intra-growth ring variation of CF in Pinus tabuliformis was investigated. Elemental analysis was performed to obtain CF values of the earlywood and latewood in each growth ring of the xylem. Patterns of CF variation at the growth ring level were evaluated using mixed-effect models. The results showed that latewood CF, 50.6 %, was significantly higher than earlywood CF, 49.9 % ( p < 0.01). In particular, inter-growth ring variations of CF differed between heartwood and sapwood, as well as between juvenile wood and mature wood. CF values decreased nonlinearly with cambium age toward the heartwood or juvenile wood, with estimated least-squares means of 50.4 % and 51.8 %, respectively. While CF values were almost unaltered in sapwood, and slightly decreased in mature wood, with estimated least-squares means of 50.0 % and 50.2 %, respectively. It indicates that patterns of CF variation between juvenile wood and mature wood are important to estimate the C stock of P. tabuliformis . This research provides insights into C uptake dynamics to support forest management and wood utilization.

Diversity and Density Patterns of Large Old Trees in China

Abstract:Large old trees are keystone ecological structures that provide vital ecosystem services to humans. However, there are few large-scale empirical studies on patterns of diversity and density of large old trees in human-dominated landscapes. We present the results of the first nationwide study in China to investigate the patterns of diversity and density of large old trees in human-dominated landscapes. We collated data on 682,730 large trees ≥100 years old from 198 Chinese regions to quantify tree species diversity, tree density and maximum tree age patterns. We modelled the effects of natural environmental variables (e.g. climate and topography) and anthropogenic variables (e.g. human population density and city age) on these measures. We found a low density of large old trees across study regions (0.36 trees/km2), and large variation in species richness among regions (ranging from 1 to 232 species). More than 95% of trees were <500 years old. The best fit models showed that: (1) Species diversity (species richness adjusted by region size) was positively associated with mean annual rainfall and city age; (2) Density of clustered trees, which are mostly remnants of ancient woods, was negatively influenced by human population density and rural population (% of total population). In contrast, the density of scattered trees, which are mostly managed by local people, was positively correlated with mean annual rainfall and human population density. To better protect large old trees in cities and other highly-populated areas, conservation policy should protect ancient wood remnants, mitigate the effects environmental change (e.g. habitat fragmentation), minimize the negative effects of human activities (e.g. logging), and mobilize citizens to participate in conservation activities (e.g. watering trees during droughts).
Comparison of Wood Physical and Mechanical Traits Between Major Gymnosperm and Angiosperm Tree Species in China

Abstract:Many wood physical and mechanical traits are important functional attributes for tree species, but variation in these traits among taxonomic categories such as between gymnosperms and angiosperms is still poorly documented. Here, the systematic differences in 12 traits and their allometric relationships between the two tree categories and the potential effects of phylogeny are explored based on a database for major gymnosperm and angiosperm tree species across China. The results are summarized below: (1) means of wood traits were all significantly lower in gymnosperms than in angiosperms. (2) Air-dried density (ADD) and tangential shrinkage coefficient (TSC) are key traits that summarize the correlations among wood traits for gymnosperms, while ADD and radial shrinkage coefficient (RSC) represent those for angiosperms. The allometric slopes of other traits, except for hardness of transverse section (HES), against ADD for gymnosperms were significantly steeper than or similar to the corresponding slopes for angiosperms. On the contrary, the slopes of other traits (except TSC) against RSC for gymnosperms were shallower than or similar to their counterparts for angiosperms. Generally, wood traits were positively related with each other, except that TSC was negatively related to density-related (ADD, BD) and hardness-related traits (HES, HRS and HTS) in gymnosperms. (3) Phylogeny had significant effects on some wood traits of gymnosperms, but had no effects on traits of angiosperms. The present analyses demonstrated a systematic difference in wood traits between two major plant categories, which suggests the evolutionary divergence (TSC, RSC) and convergence (ADD) in key functional traits among woody plants.

Abstract:Climate warming may induce growth decline in warm-temperate areas subjected to seasonal soil moisture deficit, whereas increasing atmospheric CO 2 concentration ( C a ) is expected to enhance tree growth. An accurate understanding of tree growth and physiological processes responding to climate warming and increasing C a is critical. Here, we analyzed tree-ring stable carbon isotope and wood anatomical traits of Pinus tabuliformis from Qinling Mountains in China to understand how lumen diameter (LD) determining potential hydraulic conductivity and cell-wall thickness (CWT) determining carbon storage responded to climate and C a . The effects of climate and C a on intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) were isolated, and iWUE values due to only-climate (iWUE Clim ) and only-CO 2 effects (iWUE CO2 ) were obtained. During a low-iWUE period, the influences of climate on earlywood (EW) LD and latewood (LW) CWT prevailed. During a high-iWUE period, CO 2 fertilization promoted cell enlargement and carbon storage but this was counteracted by a negative influence of climate warming. The limiting direct effects of iWUE Clim and indirect effects of climate on EW LD were greater than on LW CWT. P. tabuliformis in temperate forests will face a decline of growth and carbon fixation, but will produce embolism-resistant tracheids with narrow lumen responding to future hotter droughts.

Abstract:The plant cell wall is a complex, heterogeneous structure primarily composed of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin. Exploring the variations in these three macromolecules over time is crucial for understanding wood formation to enhance chemical processing and utilization. Here, we comprehensively analyzed the chemical composition of cell walls in the trunks of Pinus tabulaeformis using multiple techniques. In situ analysis showed that macromolecules accumulated gradually in the cell wall as the plant aged, and the distribution pattern of lignin was opposite that of polysaccharides, and both showed heterogenous distribution patterns. In addition, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) results revealed that the molecular weights of hemicelluloses decreased while that of lignin increased with age. Two-dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-HSQC NMR) analysis indicated that hemicelluloses mainly comprised galactoglucomannan and arabinoglucuronoxylan, and the lignin types were mainly comprised guaiacyl (G) and p-hydroxyphenyl (H) units with three main linkage types: β-O-4, β-β, and β-5. Furthermore, the C-O bond (β-O-4) signals of lignin decreased while the C-C bonds (β-β and β-5) signals increased over time. Taken together, these findings shed light on wood formation in P. tabulaeformis and lay the foundation for enhancing the processing and use of wood and timber products.
Intra-Ring Wood Density and Dynamic Modulus of Elasticity Profiles for Black Spruce and Jack Pine from X-ray Densitometry and Ultrasonic Wave Velocity Measurement

Abstract:Currently, ultrasonic measurement is a widely used nondestructive approach to determine wood elastic properties, including the dynamic modulus of elasticity (DMOE). DMOE is determined based on wood density and ultrasonic wave velocity measurement. The use of wood average density to estimate DMOE introduces significant imprecision: Density varies due to intra-tree and intra-ring differences and differing silvicultural treatments. To ensure accurate DMOE assessment, we developed a prototype device to measure ultrasonic wave velocity with the same resolution as that provided by the X-ray densitometer for measuring wood density. A nondestructive method based on X-ray densitometry and the developed prototype was applied to determine radial and intra-ring wood DMOE profiles. This method provides accurate information on wood mechanical properties and their sources of variation. High-order polynomials were used to model intra-ring wood density and DMOE profiles in black spruce and jack pine wood. The transition from earlywood to latewood was defined as the inflection point. High and highly significant correlations were obtained between predicted and measured wood density and DMOE.
