Abstract:Edge structures are highly relevant to the electronic, magnetic, and catalytic properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and their one-dimensional (1D) counterparts, i.e., nanoribbons, and should be precisely tailored for the desired application. In this work, we report the formation of novel Mo6S6 nanowire (NW)-terminated edges in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) via an e–beam irradiation process combined with high temperature heating. The atomic structures of the NW-terminated edges and the dynamic formation process were observed experimentally using scanning transmission electron microscopy. Further analysis showed that the NW-terminated edge could be formed on both the Mo-zigzag (ZZ) edge and S-ZZ edge and could exhibit a stability superior to that of the pristine ZZ and armchair (AC) edges. In addition, analogous edge structures could also be formed in MoS2 nanoribbons and other TMD materials such as MoxW1−xSe2. We believe that these novel edge structures may impart novel properties to the 2D and 1D TMD materials and provide new opportunities for their applications in catalytic, spintronic, and electronic devices.

Abstract:Hierarchical Co3S4 hollow nanosheet arrays are prepared through a MOF-engaged strategy, followed by room-temperature NaBH4 treatment, resulting in simultaneous regulation of sulfur vacancies and surface morphology. The obtained electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties due to large active sites, fast charge diffusion and high electronic conductivity resulting from the hierarchical hollow structure and rich sulfur vacancies.

Abstract:Strategies for harmonizing the construction of an active site and the building of electron transport for a hybrid MoS2 catalyst are crucial for its application in electrochemical reactions. In this work, an accurate and facile hydrothermal strategy was proposed to fabricate the active center of Co-O-Mo on a supported MoS2 catalyst by forming a CoMoSO phase on the edge of MoS2, yielding (Co-O)x- MoSy (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1, 1.5, or 2.1). The results show that the electrochemical performances (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical degradation) of the yielded MoS2-based catalysts were positively correlated with the Co-O bonds, verifying the significant role of Co-O- Mo as the active center. The fabricated (Co-O)-MoS0.9 presented an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope in both HER and OER, and it also demonstrated excellent BPA removal in the electrochemical degradation reaction. As compared with the Co-Mo-S configuration, the configuration of Co-O-Mo not only serves as the active center but also provides a conducting channel to facilitate electron conductivity with more accessible charge transfer at the electrode/electrolyte interface, which is favorable for electrocatalytic reaction. This work offers a new perspective for the active mechanism of metallic-heteroatom-dopant electrocatalysts and further boosts research on the development of noble/non-noble hybrid electrocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:In most cases, layered transition metal dichalcogenides (LTMDs), containing metallic phases, show electrochemical behavior different from their semiconductor counterparts. Typically, two-dimensional layered metallic 1T-MoS2 demonstrates better electrocatalytic performance for water splitting compared to its 2H counterpart. However, the characteristics of low metallic phase concentration and poor stability limit its applications in some cases. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and efficient bottom-up wet-chemistry strategy for the large-scale synthesis of nanoscopic ultrathin Mo1–xWxS2 nanosheets with enlarged interlayer spacing and high metallic phase concentration. Our characterizations, including X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), high-angle annular dark-fieldscanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the metallic ultrathin ternary Mo1–xWxS2 nanosheets exhibited distorted metal–metal bonds and a tunable metallic phase concentration. As a proof of concept, this optimized catalyst, with the highest metallic phase concentration (greater than 90%), achieved a low overpotential of about–155 mV at a current density of –10 mA/cm2, a small Tafel slope of 67 mV/dec, and an increased turnover frequency (TOF) of 1.3 H2 per second at an overpotential of –300 mV (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), highlighting the importance of the metallic phase. More importantly, this study can lead to a facile solvothermal route to prepare stable and high-metallicphase-concentration transition-metal-based two-dimensional materials for future applications.

Abstract:Monodisperse sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres are employed as both the template and carbon source to prepare MoS2 quasi-hollow microspheres-encapsulated porous carbon. The synthesis procedure involves the hydrothermal growth of MoS2 ultrathin nanosheets on the surface of SPS microspheres and subsequent annealing to remove SPS core. Incomplete decomposition of SPS during annealing due to the confining effect of MoS2 shells leaves residual porous carbon in the interior. When being evaluated as the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, the as-prepared C@MoS2 microspheres exhibit excellent cycling stability (95% of capacity retained after 100 cycles) and high rate behavior (560 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1)).

Abstract:MoS2/C nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method with citrate ammonium as carbon source. The obtained samples are well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM),energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analyzer (TG) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, they are also evaluated as electro-chemical catalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results indicate that numerous ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets which are characteristic of few layers (1-3 layers) and abundant exposed active edges and defects are well-dispersed in the amorphous carbon network to form MoS2/C composite. As a consequence, the desirable microstructures endow the resultant MoS2/C composite with significantly enhanced catalytic activity for HER such as more positive onset potential, larger current density as well as smaller Tafel slope of 64 mV dec (1) in comparison with the bare MoS2. Abstract:MoS2 microspheres were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route assisted by an ionic liquid [BMIM][BF4]. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). XRD patterns showed that the layered structure of the as-prepared MoS2 did not completely form, and after their annealing at 800 degrees C for 2 h in the atmosphere of N-2/H-2, the MoS2 microspheres had good crystallinity with well-stacked layered structure. SEM images showed that the MoS2 microspheres had uniform sizes with mean diameter about 2.1 mu m. The MoS2 microspheres had rough surfaces and were constructed with sheet-like structures. Ionic liquid played a crucial role as a templating reagent in the formation of MoS2 microspheres. A possible formation mechanism of MoS2 microspheres was preliminarily presented. Abstract:Exploring the chemical reactivity of different atomic sites on crystal surface and controlling their exposures are important for catalysis and renewable energy storage. Here, we use two-dimensional layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) to demonstrate the electrochemical selectivity of edge versus terrace sites for Li-S batteries and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Lithium sulfide (Li2S) nanoparticles decorates along the edges of the MoS2 nanosheet versus terrace, confirming the strong binding energies between Li2S and the edge sites and guiding the improved electrode design for Li-S batteries. We also provided clear comparison of HER activity between edge and terrace sites of MoS2 beyond the previous theoretical prediction and experimental proof.

Abstract:Uniform MoS2 nanosheets/C hybrid microspheres with mean diameter of 320nm have been successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route by sodium molybdate reacting with sulfocarbamide in d-glucose solutions. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). XRD patterns showed that the MoS2 was kept as a two-dimensional nanosheet crystal and C was retained as amorphous even after their annealing treatment at 800°C. TEM and SEM images indicated that the MoS2 nanosheets were uniformly dispersed in the amorphous carbon. The experiment results also revealed that the appropriate amount of d-glucose had an obvious effect on the formation of uniform MoS2 nanosheets/C hybrid microspheres. A possible formation process of MoS2 nanosheets/C hybrid microspheres was preliminarily presented.
From MoO2@MoS2 Core-Shell Nanorods to MoS2 Nanobelts

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) atomically thin crystals have attracted considerable interests due to their unique properties and potential applications. For example, reducing graphene physical size down to nanoscale to nanoribbons opens up band gaps, which makes graphene useful in electronic devices. Here, a facile approach to produce single- and bi-layered MoS2 nanobelts by PMMA assisted decoupling of MoO2@MoS2 core-shell nanorods is reported by the authors. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) results show that the decoupled monolayer staple-like MoS2-shells can fold into bilayer nanobelts during the PMMA removal process. Raman, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) results reveal that the left MoO2 nanorods exhibit high crystal-quality. These findings provide a method to produce 1D MoS2 nanobelts, which have potential applications in electronics and catalysis.

Abstract:Herein, we report a bottom-up solvothermal route to synthesize a flexible, highly efficient MoS 2 @SWNT electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Characterization revealed that branch-like MoS 2 nanosheets containing sulfurrich sites were in situ uniformly dispersed on free-standing single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) film, which could expose more unsaturated sulfur atoms, allowing excellent electrical contact with active sites. The flexible catalyst exhibited excellent HER performance with a low overpotential (~150 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 ) and small Tafel slope (41 mV/dec). To further explain the improved performance, the local electronic structure was investigated by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analysis, proving the presence of unsaturated sulfur atoms and strong electronic coupling between MoS 2 and SWNT. This study provides an in-situ synthetic route to create new multifunctional flexible hybridized catalysts and useful insights into the relationships among the catalyst microstructure, electronic structure, and properties.
Preparation,Optical and Electrocatalytic Properties of Monolayer MoS2 Quantum Dots

Abstract:This article presented a review of our recent investigations covering the synthesis ,structures ,optical and electrocatalytic properties of monolayer MoS 2 quantum dots.An effective multi-exfoliation method based on lithium (Li) intercalation had been demonstrated for preparing monolayer molybdenum disulfide ( MoS2 ) quantum dots (QDs).The average size of the quantum dots was 3 nm, and most of them were single layer .After heating treatment,the crystal structure changed from 1T phase to 2H phase,and the photoluminescence (PL) intensity excited at 300 nm increased remarkably .For the sample with annealing treatment ,the PL at 410 nm was almost not changed even at various excitation wavelengths ,indicating that the size of MoS 2 QDs was uniform .Compared to the MoS2 bulk and nanosheets,the obtained monolayer MoS 2 QDs exhibited the improved catalytic activities for hydrogen evolution reaction ( HER) with a low overpotential of approximately 120 mV and a relatively small Tafel slope of 69 mV· dec-1 .Through the analysis and comparison ,a better hydrogen evolution performance of MoS 2 quantum dots was derived from the abundance of exposed active edge sites .
Preparation and Electrochemical Properties of MoS2/C Hollow Microspheres

Abstract:MoS2 and carbon (C) were firstly formed on the surface of SiO2 nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel method as sacrificial template with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and then molybdenum disulfide/carbon hollow microspheres were prepared by alkali liquor etching silica microsphere matrix microspheres. The products were characterized, and the electrochemical properties of the products as electrode materials were investigated by constant current charging and discharging, magnification performance, cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance testing. The results show that the size of as-prepared MoS2/C hollow microspheres is approxinmately 200-300 nm, and its surface is wrapped with petaloid MoS2 lamellae and amorphous carbon. As a lithium battery anode material, the resultant product shows the first charge and discharge capacity of more than 1400 mA·h/g at a current density of 100 mA/g, and the capacity can still maintain 460 mA·h/g after 60 cycles.

Abstract:Multilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was facilely prepared by a chelation-assisted sol-gel method with ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate ((NH4)(6)Mo7O24 center dot 4H(2)O) as the molybdenum source, thioacetamide (CH3CSNH2) as the sulfur source and diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Dtpa) as the chelating agent, subsequently followed by high-temperature calcination. The chelating agent Dtpa ingeniously mediated the chelation reaction of the system and promoted the formation of a monolithic gel. The hexagonal MoS2 crystal (2H-MoS2) with good crystallinity precipitated after calcination at 1000 degrees C with the Mo and S mass ratio of 1 : 3. The adjustable MoS2 layers stacked together to form MoS2 flakes, and these flakes aggregated to construct crystalline MoS2 particles. The electrochemical tests showed the possibility of as-prepared MoS2 crystals applied as a negative electrode for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide ultrathin structures present various advantageous functional properties and hold great promise in energy conversion reactions, but their facile and large-scale preparation are still challenging. Herein, a facile strategy is developed for the preparation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets via an organic matrix-facilitated deposition followed by ultrasonic exfoliation strategy. MoS2 nanosheets with lateral dimensions around 100 nm and thickness around 10–20 nm are facilely obtained. They present the typical multiple absorbance indicating the unique band structure characteristics of MoS2 2D nanosheets. Furthermore, the electronic structures of the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets can be tuned via controlling their immediate environment in assemblies. In the layer-by-layer interfacial assemblies of (PEDOT:PSS/MoS2)n multilayers, the catalytic efficiency of MoS2 nanosheets is enhanced by a charge transfer process as corroborated by DFT simulation. The catalytic capabilities of the assemblies are optimized by the well-controlled layer-by-layer process and present effective and stable electrochemical HER properties. We expect that this fabrication strategy of 2D MoS2 nanosheets promote the research of functional materials based on MoS2 nanosheets and can be extended to the preparation of other nanosheet materials.

Abstract:Hydrothermally synthesized MoS2 were obtained and their morphological characteristics were ascertained via electron microscopy. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) micrographs revealed the formation of nano-flowers by accumulation of nanosheets. The Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the nanosheets to be of ∼100 nm length and ∼5 nm in edge width. X-ray diffraction pattern analysis showed the formation of 2H polymorph of MoS2, having a long range stacking of about 14 (002) lattice planes in a single crystallite. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic analysis revealed the presence of bridging S2 2− ligands. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis associated with the SEM indicates the presence of no other elements except Mo and S in the material. Visualization of atomic structural model and intense lattice plane has been carried out and correlated with crystallographic results. Such findings can be considered as important precursors in both experimental elementary aspects and theoretical approach towards the application-oriented research for crystallographic analysis of nanostructures.

Abstract:MoS2 crystals were synthesized by a hydrothermal method from Na2MoO4 and CS(NH2)2 under 160-220 °C for 24 h. The mechanism of the reaction was put forward. XRD, XPS and TEM were used to characterize the product, and the results showed that it has a fairly good crystal compared to other MoS2 products synthesized by hydrothermal method before, and can effectively reduce pollution caused by pyridine and other organic solvent used by others. The results of XRD and TEM also showed the relation between temperature and the crystals. This method gave us a new routine to synthesize other transition metal sulfides.

Strong hydrogen bonds between the Mo precursor and the BC nanofibers are found to be crucial for the in-situ growth of MoS2 nanosheets on the nanofibers during hydrothermal process. The unique structure was maintained and the connection between MoS2 and nanofibers were strengthened in the sintering process, leading to an improved stability of the resulting nanocomposite upon electrochemical cycling. The low-cost and environmentally friendly 3D web-like structure enables binder-free and carbon-free electrodes for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit high specific discharge capacities up to 1140 mAh/g at the C-rate of 1 C without significant capacity fading for over 50 cycles. The porous conductive hierarchical structure of the composite endows excellent rate performance by avoiding the aggregation of the MoS2 nanosheets and by accommodating mechanical stress which appears upon electrochemical cycling.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides are affordable alternatives to noble metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we report a facile one-step solvothermal method to synthesize the 1T MoS2 hierarchical nanosphere (NSP) that can function as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for HER using an environment-friendly solvent without the assistance of a template or additive. The reaction solvent is found to play a vital role in regulating the morphology and phase of the resultant MoS2. A haystack of 2H MoS2 nanosheets is obtained when water is used as the solvent, and the 1T MoS2 NSP is attained when ethanol is used. The 1T MoS2 NSP has a three-dimensional hierarchical structure and good conductivity, which lead to the excellent electrocatalytic HER performance in an acid solution with its overpotential lower than the reported MoS2-based electrocatalysts. It also demonstrates exceptional electrochemical stability, showing little variation in overpotential for 5000 reaction cycles.
