Abstract:The microstructures and pyroelectric properties of multicomposition 0.9PbZrO(3).xPbTiO(3).(0.1-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PZPT-PZN) ceramics were investigated. The PZ-PT-PZN ceramics with nearly theoretical density were prepared by spark plasma sintering at low temperature (800degreesC) for a very short time (10 min) from two original compositions with x = 0.025 and x = 0.050. The heat treatment was successfully used to control the diffusion between the different compositions in such ceramics. For ceramics heat-treated at 900degreesC, two pyroelectric peaks corresponding to the original compositions were observed. When the heat-treatment temperature was increased to 1200degreesC, these two pyroelectric peaks combined into one sharp pyroelectric peak, which corresponds to average composition. When the spark-plasma-sintered ceramics were heat-treated at 950degreesC, a high and stable pyroelectric coefficient (>100 nC.cm(-2).K-1) over a wide temperature range (23degrees-47degreesC) was obtained. It was found that the pyroelectric properties strongly depended on the microstructures.

Dielectric, Structural and Microstructural Characteristics of Tetragonal-Structured PLZT Relaxors

Abstract:Tetragonal PLZT ceramics (Zr/Ti = 40/60) with lanthanum contents of approximately 12 atomic% posses a unique transformation. Dielectric constant measurements have revealed a spontaneous switching between relaxor and normal ferroelectric behaviors, in addition significant thermal hysteresis effects were observed near the switching temperature. Temperature dependent x-ray line broadening above the switching temperature was observed which revealed the development of significant internal strain indicating the presence of local cubic-tetragonal structural transformations which preserve the average cubic symmetry, while line splitting was observed below the switching temperature indicating the formation of a macroscopic tetragonal structure. Micropolar domain coarsening and a subsequent transformation to a normal micron-sized domain configuration was observed by hot-stage transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:Dy-doped (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 ([(Ba0.85Ca0.15)0.99Dy0.01](Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3, 0.01Dy-BCZT) lead-free multi-functional ceramics were prepared by conventional solid-state sintering method, in which the effects of ceramic processing conditions were studied by structural analysis and performance characterization. The sintered 0.01Dy-BCZT ceramics have pure perovskite phase with composition near morphotropic phase boundary alongside apparent tetragonal distortion, high density and densified micro-morphology obtained via tailoring calcination and sintering temperatures. High resistivity, excellent dielectric performance and piezoelectricity were acquired, which were affected greatly by ceramic processing conditions. All samples exhibit excellent ferroelectric and strain properties, which approach intrinsic physical performance and have little dependency on ceramic processing conditions. Appearance of a strong broad emission peak, centred at similar to 442 nm, is related to the 4F9/2 -> 6H15/2 electron transition. Strong piezoelectric-fluorescent coupling effect was produced due to adding Dy and using BCZT piezoelectric matrix, which provides a promising choice in optoelectronic application field.

Abstract:Lead lanthanum zirconate titanate, PLZT ceramics have drawn great attention in microactuation because the Photostrictive Effect in it. In this study, compositional dependence of photostrictive effect in PLZT was investigated. The factual compositions were configurated quantitatively by XRF to characterize the deviation in the preparation process. Different sintering periods were designed in an attempt to obtain PLZT ceramics with the same grain size but different compositions to explore the intrinsic photostrictive effect in the PLZT system. With this method, the maximum intrinsic photocurrent was obtained at 3.48/50.7/49.3, while the maximum intrinsic photovoltage was obtained at 3.44/52.73/47.27.

Abstract:The doped 0.25Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.40PbTiO(3)-0.35PbZrO(3) (PMN-PZT) ceramics with pure perovskite phase were prepared by one-step oxide-mixed method and conventional columbite method. The phase structure and electrical properties were systematically investigated. Crystallites of the ceramic fabricated by the oxide-mixed method are partially oriented with the c-axis, while samples prepared from columbite method are randomly oriented. This crystalline orientation enabled better electric properties, especially a higher piezoelectric coefficient d(33) of 760 pC/N and electromechanical coupling factor k(p) of 69%. Materials fabricated from the oxide-mixed method are attractive for high-performance piezoelectric actuator and this simple method may have a great prospect in industrial production.

Abstract:Depending on the lattice distortion, the dielectric properties of PZT and PT ceramics are studied from a structural phase transition point of view. The study involves a more profound physical process than the study of the relation between the dielectric properties and composition x. Two equations connecting the dielectric properties and the lattice distortions are established in the tetragonal and rhombohedral phase regions. In particular, the relation between the dielectric properties and the lattice distortion is investigated in the phase coexistence region of PZT ceramics using a phase statistical distribution model, and we determine the fitting value of the volume fraction of the tetragonal phase VTto composition x in the equation. All the fitting results indicate that our results are very consistent with the related experimental data for PZT and PT ceramics.PACS Nos.: 64.70.p, 77.22.d, 77.84.s

Abstract:Mechanical and dielectric measurements were used to investigate the behavior of point defects and phase transition in ferroelectric ceramics. Some interesting results were obtained: (1) the dielectric loss peak in La-doped Bi4Ti3O12 was explained by the hopping of oxygen vacancies, the optimum doping content of La=0.75 (Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12) was discussed in terms of the competition between the density of oxygen vacancies and activation energies; (2) by use of internal friction measurements, the interaction between oxygen vacancies and ferroelectric domain walls was detected, the relationship between domain wall morphology and fatigue behavior was then well explained; (3) some internal friction peaks were also detected in SrBi2Ta2O9 and Pr(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 ceramics. The results mentioned above indicate that both mechanical and dielectric techniques are useful to clarify the mechanisms of ferroelectric behavior.

Abstract:PLZST antiferroelectric ceramics were synthesized by the modified coprecipitation method. Effect of variations in the Ti4+:Sn4+ ratio on phase and properties were evaluated. The XRD patterns show that with the increasing of Ti4+ content, the structure of ceramics changes from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase and this was certified by the P–E hysteresis loops. The temperature dependence of dielectric constant of the ceramics was measured. Low frequency dispersion at room temperature disappeared when the temperature increased and the variation of Tm is not linear with the content of Ti4+. These unusual behaviors had been interpreted.

Abstract:The influence of additions and processing on the microstructure and properties of PMN-PZN-PT ceramics was studied. Experimental results showed that the DC bias character of PMN-based ceramics doped with PZN could be improved; proper excess MgO is advantageous to inhibiting the pyrochlore phase and increasing the dielectric constant. Dielectric loss could be decreased by adding MnO2. It was also found that air quenching and annealing under proper temperature can improve the microstructure and dielectric properties, particularly in increasing the voltage breakdown strength. The reasons for this are that uniform distributions of composition in grains and in grain boundaries and a lower order degree of Mg/Nb=1:1 in micro regions could be obtained by air quenching and annealing. The results indicated that the pyrochlore phase could be eliminated and perovskite structure could be stabilized effectively. The microstructure and breakdown mechanism were analyzed by means of XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), and STEM. Abstract:High electric fields were delivered to specimens during imaging in the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) chamber to reveal details of electric field-induced phenomena in ferroelectric oxides. These include the polarization switching in nanometer-sized ferroelectric domains and the grain boundary cavitation in a commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT) polycrystalline ceramic, the domain wall fracture in a Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 single crystal, and the transformation of incommensurate modulations in Pb 0.99 Nb 0.02 [(Zr 1− x Sn x ) 1− y Ti y ] 0.98 O 3 (PZST100 x /100 y /2) polycrystalline ceramics. In the PZT ceramic, a cavitation process was uncovered for the electric field-induced intergranular fracture. In the ferroelectric single crystal, a preexisting crack was observed to deflect and to follow a 90° domain wall, indicating the presence of severe incompatible piezoelectric strains at thedomain wall. In the antiferroelectric PZST ceramics, the electric field-induced antiferroelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transformation was accompanied with the disappearance of incommensurate modulations.

Abstract:Lead‐based Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3‐Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3 (PZN–PZT) piezoelectric ceramics have been intensively studied owing to their excellent performance in multilayer actuators; however, the detailed crystal structure and actuation mechanisms are still not well understood. In this study, in situ electric field‐biasing high‐energy synchrotron X‐ray diffraction was employed to monitor the crystal structure evolution and to deconvolute contributions to the electrostrain in the morphotropic phase boundary composition of 0.3PZN‐0.7PZT. An electric field‐induced reversible phase transition between the coexisting monoclinic and tetragonal phases was identified. The unit cell parameters of the monoclinic phase exhibit significantly greater response to the electric field than those of the tetragonal phase. The effective lattice strain, evaluated through peak profile fitting, and the macroscopic strain measurement were found to be in agreement. The high electrostrain is primarily caused by the electric‐field‐induced phase transition with concurrent intrinsic/extrinsic contributions. This work provides a deeper description of the crystal structure and actuation mechanisms in PZN–PZT piezoelectric systems.

Abstract:Fine particles with different sizes of (Al, Ti, Mg) oxide co-doped ZnO ceramics were realized by a suitable grinding and a mechanical ball milling, respectively. The investigations were devoted to understand the origin of the electrical conductivity evolution with the microstructure by analyzing the local order and defect involvement in the crystalline sites of ZnO ceramics. Experimental investigations of particles were conducted to probe the local order and electronic defects with an emphasis on the electrical behavior of ceramics. Particularly, Al doping is intimately correlated with the high conductivity induced from the stabilization of particular AlZn-Zni complexes. The conduction electrons are probed through the induced Knight Shift on NMR spectra and also from the particular relaxation mechanisms of paramagnetic centers revealed by EPR studies. The correlation between the electronic active defects, the microstructure in small sized particles of ZnO based ceramics and the electrical behavior are pointed out and discussed.

Abstract:This work concentrated on studying the relationship between electron emission and materials properties. Ferroelectric (PLZT 7/65/35) and paraelectric (PLZT 12/65/35) compositions of lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) system were chosen to study for their widely different ferroelectric and dielectric properties. The experimental results proved the wrong of the spontaneous polarization switching model which based on the ferroelectric properties of the cathode. The mechanism of electron emission from PLZT ceramics was ascertained to field emission and surface plasma emission. The emission current depends slightly on the ferroelectric properties and depends significantly on the dielectric constant.

Abstract:Rare-earth elements-doped lead-free piezoelectric ceramics are a valuable multifunctional material. The Er3+-doped (Ba, Ca) (Ti, Sn)O3 (BCTS-Er) ceramics with various polymorphic phase transition (PPT) were synthesized through a traditional solid-state reaction route. The component with a coexisting phase structure of orthorhombic and tetragonal is abbreviated as BCTS-Er-I, and the component with a coexisting phase structure of rhombohedral and tetragonal is abbreviated as BCTS-Er-II. The BCTS-Er ceramic exhibits high piezoelectric properties (BCTS-Er-I: d33 = 260 pC/N; BCTS-Er-II: d33 = 310 pC/N) and strong green photoluminescence (PL) emission. The effects of polarization on the PL properties of the BCTS-Er ceramics with various PPT were systematically studied. Compared with the PL intensity of the unpoled sample, that of the poled BCTS-Er-I ceramics weakened by 70%, while that of the poled BCTS-Er-II ceramics increased by four times under the electric field at 10 kV/cm. The effect of polarization treatment on the PL properties of the BCTS-Er ceramics is attributed to the polarization-induced phase transition, lattice distortion, the symmetry of the host lattice, and domain reorientation.

Abstract:Lead ziconate titanate/nanosize Zinc oxide (PZT/nano-ZnO) composites were prepared via ultrasonic mixing of PZT and nano-ZnO powders. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the morphology and structure of the composites. The effect of nano-ZnO addition on the dielectric and polarization hysteresis loop behavior of PZT was investigated. The result showed that nano-ZnO fillers with whisker-like can be observed in the PZT-based ceramic composites. The composites exhibit distinct dielectric properties and polarization hysteresis loops.

Abstract:We have prepared antiferroelectric ceramics with compositions of (Pb0.97La0.02)(Zr1-x-ySnyTix)O3(x=0.09 or 0.1; 0.16≤y≤0.38) near antiferroelectric (AFE)tetragonal-ferroelectric (FE)rhombohedral morphotropic phase boundary. The effects of Sn content on electric field-induced AFE→FE switching field Ec, double-hysteresis-loop width ΔE, and temperature-induced FE→AFE phase transition temperature TFE, AFE→paraelectric (PE) transition temperature Tc are investigated. At constant Ti content x, both TEF and Tc decrease with increase of Sn content y. Electric hysteresis loop measurement demonstrates an increase of Ec and decrease of ΔE when Sn content y increases. Furthermore, we also find that Ec and ΔE are related with TFE and Tc. In situ X-ray diffraction under dc bias field shows that symmetry changes from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase with an increase of c axis,and an increase of lattice volume.

Abstract:Antiferroelectric materials, which exhibit high saturation polarization intensity with small residual polarization intensity, are considered as the most promising dielectric energy storage materials. The energy storage properties of ceramics are known to be highly dependent on the annealing atmosphere employed in their preparation. In this study, we investigated the effect of annealing atmosphere on the energy storage properties of lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) ceramics prepared by the sol-gel method. Specifically, the ceramics were annealed in four different atmospheres: nitrogen, oxygen, vacuum and air. Our results showed that the samples annealed in oxygen and air exhibited significantly higher energy storage density and lower dielectric loss compared to those annealed in nitrogen and vacuum. With the objective of modulating the internal defect structure of ceramics by changing the atmosphere during annealing, we annealed the ceramics in , , and vacuum environments to obtain PLZT ceramics with different oxygen vacancy concentrations. We achieved an energy storage density of 2.32 J/cm and an energy storage efficiency of 47.8% under the electric field of 165 kV/cm. Our findings suggest that optimizing the annealing atmosphere can improve the energy storage performance of PLZT ceramics. This study provides valuable insight into the effect of annealing atmosphere on ceramic properties, which can aid in the development of high-performance energy storage materials.
