Abstract:The Cu-doped KTa1-xNbxO3 (KTN) crystals have been grown by flux pulling method. The ferroelectric properties of this crystal has been studied and its phase transition features have been revealed by the measurements of dielectric constant, dielectric loss, spontaneous polarization and pyroelectric coefficient in temperature range of -140-degrees approximately +100-degrees-C.

Abstract:High pressure in situ differential thermal analysis (DTA) was applied to study phase transitions of N0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) up to 5 GPa. DTA analysis at room temperature with pressure as the variable indicated NBT samples have two pressure induced phase transformations at about 0.7 GPa and 2.5 GPa respectively. Below 0.7 GPa, two temperature induced phase transitions could be observed at around 220 degrees C and 520 degrees C as it was reported at ambient pressure. But under a pressure higher than 0.7 GPa, these two temperature induced phase transitions would not happen. In situ electrical resistance measurements showed that the resistance of NBT changes smoothly, and the tendency is similar to that of electrical insulators like pyrophyllite. We suggest that the pressure induced phase transitions at 0.7 GPa and 2.5 GPa are both insulator to insulator phase transitions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report a Raman scattering investigation of KTa1-xNbxO3 (x = 0.35, 0.5) thin films deposited on MgO and LaAlO3 as a function of temperature. The observed phase sequence in the range from 90 K to 720 K is similar to the structural phase transitions of the end-member material KNbO3. Although similar in the phase sequence, the actual temperatures observed for phase transition temperatures are significantly different from those observed in the literature for bulk samples. Namely, the tetragonal (ferroelectric) to cubic (paraelectric) phase transition is up to 50 K higher in the films when compared to bulk samples. This enhanced ferroelectricity is attributed to biaxial strain in the investigated thin films.

Abstract:The structural evolution of lanthanum aluminum trioxide (LaAlO3) crystals grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method has been investigated by the in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction method in the temperature range between 296 and 1195 K. The square of the AlO6 octahedral rotation angle in the rhombohedral structure decreased linearly near the transition temperature, suggesting that a second-order phase transition occurs at circa 839 K. Changes in the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient show a significant discontinuity at the transition point, supporting an experimental evidence by dilatometry in the literature. Wide-Temperature Tunable Phonon Thermal Switch Based on Ferroelectric Domain Walls of Tetragonal KTN Single Crystal

Abstract:Ferroelectric domain walls (DWs) of perovskite oxide materials, which can be written and erased by an external electric field, offer the possibility to dynamically manipulate phonon scattering and thermal flux behavior. Different from previous ferroelectric materials, such as BaTiO3, PbTiO3, etc., with an immutable and low Curie temperature. The Curie temperature of perovskite oxide KTa1−xNbxO3 (KTN) crystal can be tuned by altering the Ta/Nb ratio. In this work, the ferroelectric KTa0.6Nb0.4O3 (KTN) single crystal is obtained by the Czochralski method. To understand the role of ferroelectric domains in thermal transport behavior, we perform a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) calculation on monodomain and 90° DWs of KTN at room temperature. The calculated thermal conductivity of monodomain KTN is 9.84 W/(m·k), consistent with experimental results of 8.96 W/(m·k), and distinctly decreased with the number of DWs indicating the outstanding performance of the thermal switch. We further evaluate the thermal boundary resistance (TBR) of KTN DWs. An interfacial thermal resistance value of 2.29 × 10−9 K·m2/W and a large thermal switch ratio of 4.76 was obtained for a single DW of KTN. Our study shows that the ferroelectric KTN can provide great potential for the application of thermal switch at room temperature and over a broad temperature range.

Abstract:Thermal expansion behaviors of Ba(6-3x)Ln(8+2x)Ti(18)O(54) (Ln=La, Nd, and Sm, x=0.5, 0.67, and 0.75) ceramics were determined by dilatometric measurement. The samples of all investigated compositions expanded nearly linearly with increasing temperature in the range of 20 degrees-1200 degrees C. Their thermal expansion coefficients were determined to be 10.7-11.4 ppm/degrees C. A discontinuous change in sample size was observed at about 1350 degrees C for each composition, indicating the existence of a phase transition. As determined by the high-resolution X-ray diffraction analysis, the phase constitution and the lattice parameters of Ba6-3xSm8+2xTi18O54 ceramics were maintained in the quenched samples. The origin of the phase transition was discussed thoroughly. Phase equilibrium in the BaTiO3-Ln(2/3)TiO(3) system was reviewed by considering the phase transition.
Ferroelectric Domain Structures and Phase Transitions in KTa1−xNbxO3 Crystals

Abstract:Domain configurations and structures of ferroelectric KTa1-xNbxO3 crystals in both orthorhombic and tetragonal phases are studied by a polarizing microscope. It is found that the domain patterns vary in plates of different thicknesses. The domain evolution and new phase nucleation during the first-order orthorhombic-tetragonal-cubic phase transitions with large thermal hysteresis are directly observed under polarized light. The emergence of a large number of microdomains upon cooling is revealed and discussed.

Abstract:Single crystals of (Na 1/2 Bi 1/2 )TiO 3 -based compositions are of interest for actuator applications. In this work, single crystals of nominal composition (Na 1/2 Bi 1/2 )TiO 3 (NBT) and 0.92(Na 1/2 Bi 1/2 )TiO 3 –0.08KNbO 3 (NBT-KN) are grown by the self-flux method and their structure and electrical properties characterized. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy show that both the NBT and NBT-KN single crystals have a tetragonal structure, whereas polarized light microscopy and Raman scattering indicate a rhombohedral structure. Electron probe microanalysis shows the NBT single crystal is Na-deficient and slightly Bi-excess, while the NBT-KN single crystal is Na-deficient and slightly Bi-excess, slightly Nb-deficient and noticeably K -deficient. Temperature-controlled Raman scattering and measurement of the dielectric properties reveal that the characteristic phase transitions in NBT shift to lower temperatures on formation of a solid solution with KNbO 3 . The transitions indicated in the Raman scattering analysis can also be revealed by the impedance modeling parameters in terms of capacitance relaxations by diffusion mechanisms.

Abstract:(1–x)(Na0.5K0.5)NbO3-xBaTiO3 ceramics were prepared by a solid state reaction approach, and their dielectric and ferroelectric properties were evaluated together with the crystal structure. Three phase transitions at Tt1, Tt2 and Tt3 were observed by the combination of DTA analysis and dielectric characterization. These phase transitions corresponded to those of (Na0.5K0.5)NbO3, and they were greatly pulled down by forming solid solution with BaTiO3. The phase transition around Tt1 was incompletely diffusive and the appearance of diffusiveness of non ferro-paraelectric phase transition was an exception. The hysteresis loops changed their shapes from “square” into “thin square” with increasing x.

Abstract:The thermal expansion coefficients of kyanite at ambient pressure have been investigated by an X-ray powder diffraction technique with temperatures up to 1000 °C. No phase transition was observed in the experimental temperature range. Data for the unit-cell parameters and temperatures were fitted empirically resulting in the following thermal expansion coefficients: αa = 5.8(3) × 10−5, αb = 5.8(1) × 10−5, αc = 5.2(1) × 10−5, and αV = 7.4(1) × 10−3 °C−1, in good agreement with a recent neutron powder diffraction study. On the other hand, the variation of the unit-cell angles α, β and γ of kyanite with increase in temperature is very complicated, and the agreement among all studies is poor. The thermal expansion data at ambient pressure reported here and the compression data at ambient temperature from the literature suggest that, for the kyanite lattice, the most and least thermally expandable directions correspond to the most and least compressible directions, respectively.

Abstract:The (Sm1-xYbx)3TaO7 compounds were prepared using high-temperature calcining technology to evaluate the impact of Yb2O3 on the crystal-type and thermal-physical performances for Sm3TaO7. Final analytical conclusions show that the synthesised compounds have a sole pyrochlore or fluorite crystal structure, and the lattice variation from pyrochlore to fluorite is found with an increase in Yb2O3 fraction. Owing to the phonon scattering caused by substituting cation and disorder atomic arrangement, the heat insulation ability of (Sm1-xYbx)3TaO7 oxides is improved, which meets the requirements for thermal barrier coatings. The synthesised (Sm1-xYbx)3TaO7 oxides also present relatively high linear thermal expansion coefficients owing to the combined influence of ionic radius and crystal lattice energy. The addition of Yb2O3 also improves the crystal constancy until 1200 °C.

Abstract:The thermal expansion and phase transition of solid solutions Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The XRD patterns and the results of Rietveld refinement of Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 indicate that the solid solution limit was in the composition range of 0.0≤x≤0.4 and 1.7≤x≤2.0. Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (0.0≤x≤0.4) has an orthorhombic structure and exhibits negative thermal expansion between 200°C and 800°C. Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (1.7≤x≤2.0) crystallizes in monoclinic below the phase transition and above, transforms to orthorhombic. Both monoclinic and orthorhombic compounds Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (1.7≤x≤2.0) present positive thermal expansion. Orthorhombic Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion with the contraction of a and c axes, and the linear thermal expansion coefficients range from negative to positive with increasing chromium content. Partial substitution of Yb3+ for Cr3+ exhibits depressed monoclinic to orthorhombic phase transition.

Abstract:In addition to x-ray diffraction, Raman spectrum measurements provide direct evidence of the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases coexistence in lead-free ceramics (1−x)K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN)–xLiTaO3 when x equals 5mol%. This is caused by the phase transition temperature between tetragonal and orthorhombic decreasing to around room temperature due to the Li and Ta doping in KNN, and not by constituting a region of morphotropic phase boundary as presented by most published papers. The results indicate that although this kind of ceramic displays good properties, it needs further study to verify if it is suitable to be used in a varying temperature environment.
Phase transitions in KNbO3: symmetry analysis and first principles calculations

Abstract:Group theoretical aspects of the three temperature-dependent and temperature-reversible experimentally observed phase transitions in the KNbO3 crystal (cubic-tetragonal, tetragonal-orthorhombic, orthorhombic-rhombohedral) in the framework of the group-subgroup relationship tree have been discussed. The ab initio DFT-HSE06 LCAO calculations of the electron and phonon properties, with optimisation of lattice parameters and atomic coordinates for all experimentally observed KNbO3 phases, are used for better understanding of the details of these phase transitions. Good agreement with the experimental data was found for the structural properties. Ab initio calculations of the phonon dispersion curves confirmed the existence of a stable phase only for the rhombohedral structure found experimentally for the lowest temperature of 263 K. For the remaining three higher temperature phases, imaginary frequencies appear, implying a nonstability of these phases. The only the cubic-tetragonal phase transition has been found to be symmetry allowed. The tetragonal-orthorhombic and orthorhombic-rhombohedral phases are not related to the group-subgroup relationship. An explanation is proposed based also on the results of ab initio calculations of the structure of the monoclinic phase, which we have chosen as a virtual one for the tetragonal-orthorhombic transition in the bulk.

Abstract:KTaO3 and KNbO3, two typical perovskite ferroelectric crystal materials with identical cubic structure at high temperature, undergoes totally different phase transition path. The underlying mechanism is explored by comparing their phonon anharmonic behavior based on first-principle calculation. The results of Grüneisen parameters indicate larger phonon anharmonicity of KNbO3 than that of KTaO3, which leads to structural unstable of KNbO3. Different with previous studies of soft mode theory, apparent phonon anharmonicity of both crystals are stemmed not from the center, but the corner and boundary of the first Brillouin zone. In order to essentially understand the difference in the anharmonic behavior of phonons, the chemical bond strength of these two perovskite materials was analyzed by ELF. The results show that due to the stronger covalent properties of Ta-O bond, it will cause weak phonon anharmonicity, and ultimately lead to high phonon relaxation time and low Grüneisen parameters of KTaO3. The weakly ionic Nb-O bond give rise to the obvious phonon anharmonic behavior and lattice instability of KNbO3, resulting in a series of temperature-dependent phase transitions.

Abstract:Yttrium tantalite ceramics with ferroelasticity are potential candidates for thermal barrier coating (TBC) ceramics. During the phase transition process, there are three main phases with monoclinic (I2/a), monoclinic-prime (P2/a), and tetragonal structures (I41/a), and a comprehensive understanding of their thermophysical properties is required. In this study, the thermal and mechanical properties of polymorphous yttrium tantalite (YTaO4) ceramics are systematically investigated under finite temperature by performing first-principles calculations combined with quasi-harmonic approximation. The first-principle study results show that the volume change from M' to T phase is 12.85 Å3 to 12.95 Å3 per atom, whereas the T to M is 12.95 Å3 to 12.84 Å3 per atom, and the change is less than 1%, showing that this process produces almost no volume change. However, the thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) and Young's modulus vary greatly, the TECs value of M YTaO4 is about 11.13 × 10-6 K-1, which is smaller than T YTaO4 as the value 12.01 × 10-6 K-1, and the Young's modulus values of M, M' and T phases are 140.34 GPa, 156.68 GPa and 123.29 GPa, respectively. Lastly, the calculated O-Ta bond is stronger than the O-O and O-Y bonds according to the mean bond population and average bond length, resulting in a higher modulus. This work will not only expand the internal mechanism of the thermophysical properties of YTaO4, but also provides support for the design and application of TBC systems.

Abstract:Perovskite K(Ta,Nb)O3 (KTN) single crystal has drawn great interests for its outstanding electro-optic performance and excellent piezoelectric response. However, growth of compositionally uniform KTN single crystals has always been a great challenge for the great segregation difference between Nb and Ta. In this work, we propose a thermal field optimization strategy to resolve this challenge. Homogenous Sn doped KTN (Sn:KTN) single crystal with significantly reduced composition gradient (0.003 mol/mm, 1/4–1/8 of other KTN system), minimal T C variation (13 °C) and excellent piezoelectric and dielectric response (d 33 = 373 pC/N and ε 33 T = 5206) has been successfully achieved. We found that the functional properties of Sn:KTN were greatly affected by the near-room temperature tetragonal-cubic phase transition. From the intrinsic aspect, longitudinal lattice deformation becomes much easier, resulting in maximum piezoelectric ( d 33 ∗ ), dielectric ( ε 33 T ∗ ), elastic ( s 33 E ∗ )and electromechanical coupling ( k 33 ∗ ) coefficients along polar direction [001]C. From the extrinsic aspect, both domain wall density and domain wall mobility are greatly improved for the reduced lattice distortion, which also contribute a lot to the functional properties. This work provides a simple and practical route for designing and growing high quality crystals, and more importantly, reveals the fundamental mechanism of the phase transitions/boundaries on the functional properties.

Abstract:ab-initio calculations are employed to determine the structural, mechanical, elastic, electronic and thermodynamic properties of perovskite oxides XTcO 3 (X = K, Rb). From the computed structural properties, KTcO 3 and RbTcO 3 are found to be stable with equilibrium lattice constants; 7.3943 Bohr and 7.4909 Bohr, respectively. From electronic structure results, a metallic character is remarked for both compounds. The determined elastic constants (C 11 , C 12 , C 44 ) have indicated the mechanical stability of XTcO 3 (X = K, Rb) compounds that is confirmed by the phonon spectra. In addition, KTcO 3 is found to be isotropic and KTcO 3 is nearly isotropic according the anisotropic constant A values. B/G ratio has indicated the brittleness of both compounds. Furthermore, the Helmholtz free energy (F), entropy (S) and heat capacity (C V ) are determined using QHA (Quasi harmonic Approximation). Our computational indicates that XTcO 3 (X = K, Rb) compounds can be used as new materials for solid oxide fuel cells and related applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of the annealing temperature on the phase transition and optical property of titanate nanotubes was discussed in detail. TGA results indicated that the dehydration process happened when titanate nanotubes were annealed. Up to 450°C, the weight loss ceased entirely. XRD results showed that anatase and triclinic Ti5O9 were formed in annealed samples. TEM was used to observe the micrographs of samples. SAED patterns indicated that the granular phase and the rod-shaped crystal were triclinic Ti5O9 and anatase, respectively. In addition, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra were used to study the optical band gap of samples annealed at different temperature.
