Abstract:If a finitely generated torsion free group K has the property that all finitely generated subgroups S of K are either small or have growth constant bounded uniformly away from 1 then a non proper HNN extension G of K, that is a semidirect product of K by the integers, has the same property. Here small means cyclic or, if the automorphism has no periodic conjugacy classes, free abelian of bounded rank.

Abstract:The Baumslag-Solitar group is an example of an HNN extension. Spielberg showed that it has a natural positive cone, and that it is then a quasi-lattice ordered group in the sense of Nica. We give conditions for an HNN extension of a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G,P)$ to be quasi-lattice ordered. In that case, if $(G,P)$ is amenable as a quasi-lattice ordered group, then so is the HNN extension.

Abstract:Abstract We show that a torsion-free nilpotent loop (that is, a loop nilpotent with respect to the dimension filtration) has a torsion-free nilpotent left multiplication group of, at most, the same class. We also prove that a free loop is residually torsion-free nilpotent and that the same holds for any free commutative loop. Although this last result is much stronger than the usual residual nilpotence of the free loop proved by Higman, it is established, essentially, by the same method.

Abstract:We show that several torsion free 3-manifold groups are not left-orderable. Our examples are groups of cyclic branched covers of S^3 branched along links. The figure eight knot provides simple nontrivial examples. The groups arising in these examples are known as Fibonacci groups which we show not to be left-orderable. Many other examples of non-orderable groups are obtained by taking 3-fold branched covers of S^3 branched along various hyperbolic 2-bridge knots. The manifold obtained in such a way from the 5_2 knot is of special interest as it is conjectured to be the hyperbolic 3-manifold with the smallest volume.

Abstract:We show that there exist finitely generated soluble groups which are not LERF but which do not contain strictly ascending HNN extensions of a cyclic group. This solves Problem 16.2 in the Kourovka notebook. We further show that there is a finitely presented soluble group which is not LERF but which does not contain a strictly ascending HNN extension of a polycyclic group.

Abstract:We classify finitely generated, residually finite automorphism-induced HNN-extensions in terms of the residual separability of a single associated subgroup. This classification provides a method to construct automorphism-induced HNN-extensions which are not residually finite. We prove that this method can never yield a "new" counter-example to Gromov's conjecture on the residual finiteness of hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We provide new examples of groups without rational cross-sections (also called regular normal forms), using connections with bounded generation and rational orders on groups. Specifically, our examples are extensions of infinite torsion groups, groups of Grigorchuk type, wreath products similar to $C_2\wr(C_2\wr \mathbb Z)$ and $\mathbb Z\wr F_2$, a group of permutations of $\mathbb Z$, and a finitely presented HNN extension of the first Grigorchuk group. This last group is the first example of finitely presented group with solvable word problem and without rational cross-sections. It is also not autostackable, and has no left-regular complete rewriting system.

Abstract:A group $G$ is said to have the Howson property (or to be a Howson group) if the intersection of any two finitely generated subgroups of $G$ is finitely generated subgroup. It is proved that descending HNN-extension is not a Howson group under some assumptions satisfied by the base group of HNN-extension. In particular, a result of the paper joined with a Burns - Brunner result (received in 1979) implies that any descending HNN-extension of non-cyclic free group does not have the Howson property.

Abstract:Let be a group, let be an isomorphism of onto a subgroup of , and let be a descending HNN-extension of corresponding to . The potency of is not inherited by even in the simplest case, when is an infinite cyclic group. We prove that if is a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group (a polycyclic group); then the index of in is finite and is -potent (virtually -potent), where is the set of all primes greater than . We also prove some generalizations of this assertion. Some of the results of this work on the potency of descending HNN-extensions are analogs of the well-known theorems on the residual finiteness of the HNN-extensions.

Abstract:Fix an equilateral triangle group $T_i=\langle a, b; a^i, b^i, (ab)^i\rangle$ with $i\geq6$ arbitrary. Our main result is: for every presentation $\mathcal{P}$ of every countable group $Q$ there exists an HNN-extension $T_{\mathcal{P}}$ of $T_i$ such that $\operatorname{Out}(T_{\mathcal{P}})\cong Q$. We construct the HNN-extensions explicitly, and examples are given. The class of groups constructed have nice categorical and residual properties. In order to prove our main result we give a method for recognising malnormal subgroups of small cancellation groups, and we introduce the concept of "malcharacteristic" subgroups.

Abstract:The main result in this paper is the failure of the finitely generated intersection property (FGIP) of ascending HNN extensions of non-cyclic finite rank free groups. This class of group consists of free-by-cyclic groups and properly ascending HNN extensions of free groups. We also give a sufficient condition for the failure of the FGIP in the context of relative hyperbolicity, we apply this to free-by-cyclic groups of exponential growth.
