Abstract:Mg-based materials have been widely studied as potential hydrogen storage media due to their high theoretical hydrogen capacity, low cost, and abundant reserves. However, the sluggish hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics and high thermodynamic stability of Mg-based hydrides have hindered their practical application. Ball milling has emerged as a versatile and effective technique to synthesize and modify nanostructured Mg-based hydrides with enhanced hydrogen storage properties. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art progress in the ball milling of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials. The synthesis mechanisms, microstructural evolution, and hydrogen storage properties of nanocrystalline and amorphous Mg-based hydrides prepared via ball milling are systematically reviewed. The effects of various catalytic additives, including transition metals, metal oxides, carbon materials, and metal halides, on the kinetics and thermodynamics of Mg-based hydrides are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the strategies for synthesizing nanocomposite Mg-based hydrides via ball milling with other hydrides, MOFs, and carbon scaffolds are highlighted, with an emphasis on the importance of nanoconfinement and interfacial effects. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of ball-milled Mg-based hydrides for practical on-board hydrogen storage applications are outlined. This review aims to provide valuable insights and guidance for the development of advanced Mg-based hydrogen storage materials with superior performance.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the challenges faced by Mg - based hydrogen storage materials in practical applications, mainly focusing on two aspects: 1. **Slow hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics**: Although Mg - based materials have a high theoretical hydrogen storage capacity (for example, the theoretical hydrogen storage capacity of MgH₂ is 7.6 wt.%), their hydrogen absorption and release rates are very slow, resulting in low efficiency in practical applications. 2. **High thermodynamic stability**: Mg - based hydrides have high thermodynamic stability, which makes their dehydrogenation temperatures too high (usually exceeding 350 °C), thus limiting their use in practical application scenarios such as on - board hydrogen storage. To overcome these challenges, researchers have introduced ball milling technology. Ball milling, as an effective solid - state processing method, can improve the performance of Mg - based hydrogen storage materials in the following ways: - **Nanostructuring**: By reducing the particle size, increasing defects and strain energy, the surface reactivity of the material can be significantly improved, thereby accelerating the absorption and release of hydrogen. - **Role of catalytic additives**: Adding catalysts such as transition metals, metal oxides, carbon materials and metal halides can further reduce the activation energy of hydrogen absorption/desorption and increase the reaction rate. - **Synthesis of composites**: By ball - milling, Mg - based materials are combined with other materials (such as MOFs, carbon skeletons, etc.) to form nanocomposites, and the hydrogen storage performance is optimized by using the nano - confinement effect and the interface effect. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to summarize and explore the latest progress of ball milling technology in the field of Mg - based hydrogen storage materials, aiming to provide valuable insights and guidance for the development of high - performance Mg - based hydrogen storage materials and promote their progress towards practical applications.
