Abstract:As a pharmacal and edible vegetable,green asparagus is rich in many kinds of nutrients and widely welcome.At present,most of the asparagus produced in China are for exporting.But at ambient temperature,its extreme perishable property and high respiration rate seriously limit the shelf-life.Some proper preserving methods have been proved to reserve its fresh property effectively.Lately,there were a lot of studies and reports on green asparagus preserving which were summarized in this review.

Abstract:Asparagus is a highly perishable vegetable which deteriorated rapidly after harvesting.Treated with mixture of 6-benzylaminopurine(6-BA)and CaCl2 or NaClO,asparagus' shelf life and quality were improved.Quality parameters including chlorophyll,shear force,lignin,cellulose content,PAL,POD,ASA-POD and CAT activity were studied.The results showed that the mixture additives significantly decreased the loss of the chlorophyll,maintained good shear force,increased CAT and POD activity,inhibited PAL peak,but no significant effect on lignin,cellulose content and ASA-POD activity.
Effect of Superchilling Combined with Modified Atmosphere Packaging on Pork of Lanxi Pig

Abstract:Superchilling and modified atmosphere packaging(MAP) are two important preservation technologies of meat. The research combined the two kinds of technologies. It took Lanxi pigs as experimental material. The indexes included p H,water holding capacity,total bacterial count and sensory score. Firstly,the effects of pork were compared under conditions of 4℃ cold storage,-2℃ superchilling storage and-18℃ frozen storage.Then,the influence of CO2 and O2on quality of pork was researched partially under-2℃ superchilling. At last,the best combination of CO2 and O2was determined. The result showed that pork under-2℃ superchilling storage could keep normal quality in 15 days. CO2 could lower p H of pork and inhibits the growth of microorganism in it,while O2 could keep good color but promote the growth of microorganism. Finally,the experiment of CO2/O2 Combination shows that 40% CO2+60% O2 was the best MAP composition under-2℃superchilling storage. The fresh period was as long as 24 days.

Abstract:Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) florets were packaged in polyethylene bags with no holes (M0), two microholes (M1), and four macroholes (M2), and then stored at 4 or 20°C. The effects of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) treatments on visual quality and glucosinolate contents were determined by comparing with non-wrapped florets. The results showed that MAP treatments, especially with M0 and M1, extended the shelf life and reduced the postharvest deterioration of broccoli florets stored at 4 and 20°C. All three MAP treatments reduced the decreasing concentration rates of individual, total aliphatic and indole glucosinolates in broccoli florets when compared to those in the control, with M0 being the most significant, followed by M1 and M2 during 23 days of storage at 4°C or 5 days of storage at 20°C. Broccoli florets with M0 treatment maintained the visual quality and glucosinolate contents for 13 days at 4°C and 3 days at 20°C.
Preliminary Study of Preservation Effect on Postharvest Peach by Biocontrol Agents

Abstract:We investigated the postharvest preservation effect of peaches by applying different conditions of bio-control agent,storage temperature and 1-MPC.The results showed that the combination of Pseudomonas fluorescens 2P24 and 1-MCP had best effect of preservation under storage temperature of 16 ℃.For the third day,the disease index was 16.7% of blank control,without commodity value.However,for the sixth day,that of peaches treated with P.fluorescens 2P24 and 1-MCP was only 15% with commodity value.Storage temperature of 16℃ and 28℃ had no significant influence on peach preservation.

Abstract:Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) is one of the most popular vegetables because it contains a wealth of fiber and several essential nutrients. It is a very perishable commodity due to its very high respiration rate. To maintain product quality and to satisfy consumer demand as a convenient food, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), vacuum skin packaging (VSP), and microwaveable containers were used to extend the shelf life of fresh‐cut asparagus as a ready‐to‐eat food product. The objective of this study was to determine the shelf life of fresh‐cut asparagus packed in MAP and VSP microwaveable tray systems at commercial storage conditions, 4°C, 80% RH. Weight loss, moisture content, O2/CO2 concentration in the package headspace, product pH, microbial growth, and sensory evaluation were used to determine the product quality and shelf life. Moreover, the preference of product appearance and the quality of the cooked asparagus in both microwaveable tray systems at different cooking times and microwave power levels was also sensorially evaluated. During storage for 21 days, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in weight loss, moisture content, and pH. Sanitation and packaging techniques also helped to retard the microbial growth. Both techniques, combined with refrigeration, help to maintain the freshness and product shelf life up to 21 days for MAP and 18 days for VSP. On the basis of hedonic scale results, consumers preferred the appearance of both packaging types. Both microwavable tray systems, thus, can help to prolong the shelf life of fresh‐cut asparagus and can be eaten directly from the package.

Influence of different packaging conditions on fresh-cut garlic sprouts shelf-life were studied during 15 days of storage at 4 °C. Fresh-cut garlic sprouts of 15-cm length were placed in hermetically sealed plastic bags: polyvinyl chloride (PVC), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyethylene-perforated bags as control (air). The O2 and CO2 concentrations, soluble solid content (SSC), titratable acid (TA), ascorbic acid (AA), sensory quality and microbial quality were monitored. Compared to the control, both MAP treatments improved the sensory quality, avoid the loss of chemical quality contents, retard the growth of microorganisms. After 15 days at 4 °C within the PVC bags a steady-state atmosphere of 5.8 kPa O2 + 7.0 kPa CO2 was reached and fresh-cut garlic sprouts under these bags showed the best quality.

Abstract:Temperature and gas composition control is essential for maintaining the fresh flavor and quality of perishable fruits. This study presented a design of consolidated cold and modified atmosphere package (MAP) system for fresh fruits by showing the potential benefits of a low-tech and low-cost approach to cold chain adoption. The effectiveness of insulated expanded polystyrene (EPS) box installed with phase change materials (PCM) and equipped with MAP on maintaining quality of fresh strawberries was reported. Real-time changes of gas composition, temperature and relative humidity inside packages, weight loss, total soluble solids, color, texture, respiration rate, electrical conductivity, and general appearance of strawberries were determined during the storage in successive harvests of Dec 2017 and Apr 2018. Loss of fruit weight and electrical conductivity were higher in the control strawberries comparing with packaged fruits. The consolidated package system had significant effect on maintaining firmness, color, total soluble solids, global appearance, respiration rate of strawberries for all attributes. Results of this study confirmed that this innovative approach to cold chain design had the potential use in express delivery of strawberry fruits when the ambient temperatures were not well controlled.

Abstract:Freezing extends the shelf-life of food by slowing down the physical and biochemical reactions; however, ice crystal formation can result in irreversible damage to the cell's structure and texture. Supercooling technology has the potential to preserve the original freshness of food without freezing damage. In this study, fresh asparagus was preserved in a supercooled state and its quality changes such as color, weight loss, texture, chlorophyll and anthocyanin content, and enzymatic activities (superoxide dismutase and catalase) were evaluated. The asparagus samples were successfully supercooled at -3 °C with the combination treatment of pulsed electric field (PEF) and oscillating magnetic field (OMF), and the supercooled state was maintained for up to 14 days. Asparagus spears preserved in the supercooled state exhibited lower weight loss and higher levels of quality factors in comparison to the frozen and refrigerated control samples.
Novel Combined Use of Red-White LED Illumination and Modified Atmosphere Packaging for Maintaining Storage Quality of Postharvest Pakchoi

Abstract:Light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation is a promising way of food non-thermal preservation in recent years, and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is a traditional preservation method that can realize long-term storage. To maximize the shelf life of pakchoi and maintain its quality, pakchoi was packaged and stored under modified atmosphere with and without red and white LED illumination. The initial gas partial pressure (kPa) of O2/CO2 in the three modified atmospheres was 5/10, 5/5, and 10/5. At the end of 30-day refrigerated storage period, LED illumination + 5 kPa O2 + 5 kPa CO2 showed better effects than other treatments in delaying losses of mass, chlorophylls, soluble sugars, and ascorbic acid and ultimately maintained the package gas partial pressure at O2/CO2 = 5.11/5.09. Furthermore, the treatment alleviated the accumulation of malondialdehyde, reduced the activity of the polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase, and better maintained DPPH radical scavenging activity. In addition, the combined treatment significantly reduced the amount of soluble quinone accumulated in pakchoi at the end of the storage period. The optimal treatment was effectively distinguished from other treatments by principal component analysis (PCA). The analysis confirmed that the freshness of the jointly treated samples was least different from the start day samples. Through correlation analysis, respiratory rate was highly positively correlated with soluble sugar content, color index, and DPPH radical scavenging activity. In conclusion, the combined treatment of LED irradiation and MAP led to the cumulative effect of different indicators, effectively alleviated the occurrence of browning of pakchoi, enhanced the preservation effect, and extended the shelf life of pakchoi to 30 days.

Abstract:Fresh-cut asparagus is susceptible to spoilage and quality deterioration during storage, which seriously affects its shelf-life and commercial value. The effects of ultrasonic-assisted citric acid and nisin washing (CNUS) combined with cinnamon essential oil fumigation (CEO) on microbial growth, physiological quality, and sensory characteristics of fresh-cut asparagus during storage at 4 °C were evaluated. The results showed that CNUS treatment immediately reduced the initial microbial load, and CEO treatment inhibited microbial growth during storage. CNUS + CEO treatment efficiently reduced the microbial counts and maintained acceptable levels for 20 d. In addition, CNUS + CEO treatment reduced respiration rate and weight loss, delayed respiration peak time, and maintained high ascorbic acid, chlorophyll and total soluble solids contents. Moreover, CNUS + CEO treatment greatly retarded lignin deposition by inhibiting phenylalanine ammonia lyase and peroxidase activities. CNUS + CEO treated samples had the lowest electrolyte leakage. The CNUS + CEO treatment could maintain the sensory characteristics and the shelf-life of fresh-cut asparagus for 20 d at 4 °C. Therefore, CNUS + CEO treatment could be used as an effective combination preservation technique for fresh-cut asparagus.

Abstract:Dictyophora indusiata (Vent. ex Pers.) are prone to postharvest deterioration during storage at high temperatures. To date, there are no reports available on the preservation technology of fresh Dictyophora indusiata. Fresh Dictyophora indusiata were packed using different methods, and physiological changes associated with postharvest deterioration were monitored during subsequent storage for 20 days at 0 degrees C or 4 degrees C and 70-80% relative humidity. The effect of cold storage and polyethylene (PE) film bag on the postharvest physiology and quality of Dictyophora indusiata was addressed. The application of 0 degrees C+PE film bag packaging inhibited weight loss and thus improved the quality of Dictyophora indusiata as revealed by sensory evaluation, weight loss, vitamin C, total sugar, total phenolics, total flavonoid, and soluble protein content. Our results indicated that the use of the 0 degrees C+PE film bag was an effective method to retain the postharvest physiology and quality of Dictyophora indusiata.

Abstract:It was studied the effects of ultra high pressure fresh-keeping packaging technology on quality of cold fresh meat in the storage period. Applying different pressure on cold meat and keep a certain time, every 3 days on the sample by one measurement were used to detect the cold fresh meat TVB-N value, color, pH value, and the total number of colonies, to test the UHP fresh-keeping packaging on chilled pork preservation effect. After 15 days of storage, samples of ultra high pressure to maintain 5 min 300 MPa, its TVB-N value is 15.3 mg/100 g, the pH value is 6.6, chromatic values (a*) of 14.1, the total number of colonies is 4.8 × 104 cfu/g, reached the first class standard of national standard of fresh meat, it can be good fresh preservation effect.

Abstract:The effect of 100% oxygen (O2)-modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the quality improvement of fresh-cut broccoli stored at 4 °C for 15 days was investigated in this study. The results indicated that, compared to the control group conditions, 100% O2 MAP treatment effectively maintained broccoli sensory evaluation scores, green color, and texture; reduced respiration and chlorophyll degradation; and reduced total bacterial count (TBC), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, electrolyte leakage (EL), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and superoxide (O2−) contents. Furthermore, 100% O2 MAP led to a smaller loss of nutrients and increased antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, the use of 100% O2 MAP is an effective approach for maintaining high-quality fresh-cut broccoli during refrigerated storage at 4 °C.

Asparagus responds to controlled atmospheres in warm conditions

Abstract:Asparagus spears held in warm conditions (20°C) for 4 days in controlled atmospheres (CA) ranging from 5 to 10% oxygen with 5–15% carbon dioxide had significantly longer residual shelf‐life (≈4.5 days) in air than did check spears (2.6 days). This response was also reflected in sensory characteristics, with lower off‐flavour ratings and higher flavour and acceptability ratings for CA‐treated than for check spears. The level of response was similar across the range of atmospheres tested. Tests using plastic films differing in permeability demonstrated that modified atmosphere technology can be used to obtain the improvement in spear quality, but the gas permeability of the films tested was too low to provide a commercially useful pack. The potential for microperforated films for this application is discussed.

Effect of ultrasound treatment on microbial inhibition and quality maintenance of green asparagus during cold storage

Abstract:The study focused on inhibiting microorganism and improving preservation of green asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) during cold storage. Green asparagus is treated with ultrasound (US), acetic acid and gibberellin acid (AG) separately as well as combination (US + AG) and then stored at 4 °C for 20 days. Microorganism, physicochemical qualities and sensory characteristics were monitored at regular intervals. Results showed that the US treatment significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the total number of colonies, mold and yeast merely in the 12th and 16th day of storage, while the US + AG treatment not only achieved an effective decontamination (up to 2 log reduction) of green asparagus throughout the storage, but also retained the physicochemical characteristics to a higher level in comparison to other treatments. The US + AG treatment exhibited lower weight loss, higher levels of total soluble solid (TSS), ascorbic acid, chlorophyll content and total phenolic content (TPC), as well as kept better sensory attributes. Moreover, the US + AG treatment significantly inhibited the activities of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and peroxidase (POD) (p < 0.05), suppressing the biosynthesis of lignin. These results suggested that the US + AG treatment could be a potential strategy to preserve quality of green asparagus during cold storage.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to assess, through a comparative shelf-life test, the suitability of two packaging materials, namely macro-perforated polypropylene (PP MA) and micro-perforated coextruded polypropylene (PP C), for the quality preservation of green asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L. ‘Vegalim’). Quality of spears was evaluated during 30 days at refrigerated storage by monitoring chemical, physical, and enzymatic parameters as well as sensory descriptors. PP C kept headspace composition close to suggested values for fresh green asparagus. Total color difference increased during the storage and it was highly correlated with chlorophyll-a and carotenoids, however, sensory color perception did not change significantly until 22 days of storage. PP C maintained ascorbic acid concentrations close to the initial levels, limited total phenolic compound loss to 24% (45% in PP MA), determined an increase of 72% in fiber content and small changes in lignin value; enzymatic changes were significantly inhibited. Significant sensorial differences were detected after 22 days of storage, with PP C performing better than PP MA. PP C film was confirmed as the best choice, limiting weight loss and maintaining a fresh-like appearance during 30 days of storage, thus allowing an extension in postharvest life.
