Abstract:Recent studies revealing exceptionally rapid water flow across graphene oxide membranes have highlighted them for potential filtration and separation applications. The physical and chemical features in graphene oxide membranes are heterogeneous, and there remains a great deal of speculation as to what is responsible for the facile water percolation. One potential contributing feature is the variation of interlayer spacing, which can occur naturally or be artificially induced. Herein, water flow across pristine, oxidized, and mixed membranes with interlayer distances of 0.7, 0.9, and 1.2 nm, corresponding respectively to the formation of discrete mono-, bi-, and trilayer water structures, was studied via molecular dynamics simulations. Abstract:The ubiquitous existence of water confined in nano-capillaries is key to fundamental biological and technological applications. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we analyzed the hopping-like interlayer relocation dynamics of bilayer water confined between two parallel graphene sheets. In contrary to the common scheme that relocation is driven by density fluctuations, analysis of the transition path ensemble revealed that interlayer hopping is induced by local hydrogen bond configuration fluctuations coupled with activated consecutive transient angular reorientations. Our results consolidated the anisotropic nature of water relocation under strong ordering, which provided a mechanistic insight into the relaxation behavior at glass-forming water’s fragile-to-strong crossover.

Abstract:Several studies have demonstrated interest in creating surfaces with improved water interaction and adaptive properties because the behavior of water confined at the nanoscale plays a significant role in the synthesis of materials for technological applications. Remarkably, confinement at the nanoscale significantly modifies the characteristics of water. We determine the phase diagram of water contained by graphene stack sheets in slab form, at K, and for a constant pressure using molecular dynamics simulations. We discover that, as shown in the simulation, water can exist in both the liquid and vapor phases depending on the confining geometry and compressibility ratio. We also pay attention to how stable the interacting liquid is in relation to the pressure of compression that is perpendicular to the graphene sheets. To build this system and analyze its surface interface properties, we also used analytical and electronic scale modeling approaches. The impact of nanoconfinement on internal pressure may be seen in water, and this can be used to create interfacial materials for the creation of environmentally friendly solar cell materials. Our research highlights the intricate, seemingly random behavior of nanoconfined water—behavior that is difficult for graphene to understand. The results obtained offer crucial direction for system design and configuration of materials at the graphene/water interface that can be utilized as a benchmark for other future designs.

Structure and Dynamic Properties of Stretched Water in Graphene Nanochannels by Molecular Dynamics Simulation: Effects of Stretching Extent

Abstract:Water confined in nanochannels can be stretched with variation of the external pressure, leading to unusual properties compared with bulk water. In order to unravel the impacts of stretching extent on the structural and dynamic properties of water confined in hydrophobic graphene nanochannels with various channel widths (L = 1 nm, 2 nm and 3 nm), molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed in this work. It was found that an ultrahigh negative pressure was present in the confined space with the increase of stretching extent before cavitation. The interfacial density peak and tetrahedral arrangement were reduced with the increasing hydrogen bond length, indicating the more disordered structural organization, especially in channels with small channel widths. On the other hand, the hydrogen bond lifetime was increased due to the prolonged stability of the hydrogen bond under stretching. The remarkably increased diffusion coefficients of confined water with the increasing stretching coefficient result from the faster diffusion of interfacial water along the channel surface regardless of channel width. At last, the oscillating tangential pressure profile inside the nanochannels demonstrated that the confined water under stretching consists of multiple layers exhibiting alternate positive and negative pressures, which is reduced with the increase of stretching coefficient, corresponding to the enhanced diffusion.
Formation of Trilayer Ices in Graphene Nanocapillaries under High Lateral Pressure

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulation, we investigate the phase behavior of water confined in graphene nanocapillaries at room temperature (300 K). Here, the lateral pressure P-zz is used as the primary controlling variable, and its effect on the behavior of trilayer water is systematically studied. Three (meta)stable trilayer (TL) crystalline/amorphous ice phases, namely, TL-ABAI, TL-ABA, and TL-AAAI, are observed in our simulations with the lateral pressure in the range of 1.0 GPa <= P-zz <= 6.0 GPa. TL-ABAI exhibits a square lattice in every layer, and the three layers exhibit the ABA stacking pattern; i.e., the oxygen atoms in the two outer layers are in registry. This new trilayer ice structure can also be viewed as a bilayer clathrate hydrate with water molecules in the middle layer serving as the guest molecules. With increasing lateral pressure, typically, the solid-to-liquid-to-solid phase transition occurs, during which the structural transformation from triangular to square-like in the ice layer is accompanied by a sudden jump in PI (normal pressure) and in potential energy (per molecule). The oxygen density profiles of the three trilayer structures show a common feature; that is, the peak of the middle layer is markedly lower than that of the two outer layers. The computed diffusivity suggests that water in the middle layer exhibits behavior different from that in the two outer layers in contact with the graphene. For TL-AAAI, the diffusion of water molecules in the layer next to the graphene is faster than that in the middle layer.

Abstract:Graphene-based membranes have been investigated as promising candidates for water filtration and gas separation applications. Experimental evidences have shown that graphene oxide can be impermeable to liquids, vapors and gases, while allowing a fast permeation of water molecules. This phenomenon has been attributed to the formation of a network of nano capillaries that allow nearly frictionless water flow while blocking other molecules by steric hindrance effects. It is supposed that water molecules are transported through the percolated two-dimensional channels formed between graphene-based sheets. Although these channels allow fast water permeation in such materials, the flow rates are strongly dependent on how the membranes are fabricated. Also, some fundamental issues regarding the nanoscale mechanisms of water permeation are still not fully understood and their interpretation remains controversial. In this work, we have investigated the dynamics of water permeation through pristine graphene and graphene oxide model membranes. We have carried out fully atomistic classical molecular dynamics simulations of systems composed of multiple layered graphene-based sheets into contact with a water reservoir under controlled thermodynamics conditions (e. g., by varying temperature and pressure values). We have systematically analyzed how the transport dynamics of the confined nanofluids depend on the interlayer distances and the role of the oxide functional groups. Our results show the water flux is much more effective for graphene than for graphene oxide membranes. These results are attributed to the H-bonds formation between oxide functional groups and water, which traps the water molecules and precludes ultrafast water transport through the nanochannels.
Channel morphology effect on water transport through graphene bilayers

Abstract:The application of few-layered graphene-derived functional thin films for molecular filtration and separation has recently attracted intensive interests. In practice, the morphology of the nanochannel formed by the graphene (GE) layers is not ideally flat and can be affected by various factors. This work investigates the effect of channel morphology on the water transport behaviors through the GE bilayers via molecular dynamics simulations. The simulation results show that the water flow velocity and transport resistance highly depend on the curvature of the graphene layers, particularly when they are curved in non-synergic patterns. To understand the channel morphology effect, the distributions of water density, dipole moment orientation and hydrogen bonds inside the channel are investigated, and the potential energy surface with different distances to the basal GE layer is analyzed. It shows that the channel morphology significantly changes the distribution of the water molecules and their orientation and interaction inside the channel. The energy barrier for water molecules transport through the channel also significantly depends on the channel morphology.
Water under extreme confinement in graphene: Oscillatory dynamics, structure, and hydration pressure explained as a function of the confinement width

Abstract:Graphene nanochannels are relevant for their possible applications, as in water purification, and for the challenge of understanding how they change the properties of confined liquids. Here, we use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate water confined in an open graphene slit-pore as a function of its width $w$, down to sub-nm scale. We find that the water translational and rotational dynamics exhibits an oscillatory dependence on $w$, due to water layering. The oscillations in dynamics correlate with those in hydration pressure, which can be negative (hydrophobic attraction), or as high as $\sim 1$ GPa, as seen in the experiments. At pore widths commensurable with full layers (around $7.0$ Å and $9.5$ Å for one and two layers, respectively), the free energy of the system has minima, and the hydration pressure vanishes. These are the separations at which the dynamics of confined water slows down. Nevertheless, the hydration pressure vanishes also where the free energy has maxima, i.e., for those pore-widths which are incommensurable with the formation of well-separated layers, as $w\simeq 8.0$ Å. Around these values of $w$, the dynamics is faster than in bulk, with water squeezed out from the pore. This behavior has not been observed for simple liquids under confinement, either for water in closed nano-pores. The decomposition of the free energy clarifies the origins of the dynamics speedups and slowdowns. In particular, we find that the nature of the slowdown depends on the number of water layers: for two layers, it is due to the internal energy contribution, as in simple liquids, while for one layer, it has an entropic origin possibly due to the existence of a hydrogen-bond network in water. Our results shed light on the mechanisms ruling the dynamics and thermodynamics of confined water and are a guide for future experiments.

Mechanistic studies on the anomalous transport behaviors of water molecules in nanochannels of multilayer graphynes

Abstract:An in-depth understanding of directed transport behaviors of water molecules through nanoporous materials is essential for the design and development of next-generation filtration devices. In this work, we perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore transport properties of water molecules through nanochannels of multilayer graphyne with different pore sizes. Our simulation results reveal that the orientations of confined water molecules would periodically reverse between two opposite directions as they diffuse along the nanochannels, and such a transport mechanism shows similarities with water transport in aquaporin channels. Further, we observe that, for each orientation reversal, there is an obvious difference in the HB breaking frequency among the three graphyne systems, with an order of graphyne-4 > graphyne-5 > graphyne-3. Besides, the average HB number is found to display a periodic fluctuation with a pulse-like pattern along the diffusion direction, wherein the graphyne-4 system has the maximum fluctuation, while the graphyne-3 system has the minimum one. Such anomalous HB breaking frequency and average HB number fluctuation results finally lead to a nonmonotonic relationship between water diffusion rate and graphyne pore size, and the diffusion order follows graphyne-4 > graphyne-5 > graphyne-3. Herein, we provide a new insight into the transport mechanisms of water molecules through nanoporous materials and our findings open up opportunities for the design and development of high-performance graphyne-based membranes used for water purification and desalination.
Molecular Structure and Dynamics of Water on Pristine and Strained Phosphorene: Wetting and Diffusion at Nanoscale

Abstract:Phosphorene, a newly fabricated two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, has emerged as a promising material for biomedical applications with great potential. Nonetheless, understanding the wetting and diffusive properties of bio-fluids on phosphorene which are of fundamental importance to these applications remains elusive. In this work, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigated the structural and dynamic properties of water on both pristine and strained phosphorene. Our simulations indicate that the diffusion of water molecules on the phosphorene surface is anisotropic, with strain-enhanced diffusion clearly present, which arises from strain-induced smoothing of the energy landscape. The contact angle of water droplet on phosphorene exhibits a non-monotonic variation with the transverse strain. The structure of water on transverse stretched phosphorene is demonstrated to be different from that on longitudinal stretched phosphorene. Moreover, the contact angle of water on strained phosphorene is proportional to the quotient of the longitudinal and transverse diffusion coefficients of the interfacial water. These findings thereby offer helpful insights into the mechanism of the wetting and transport of water at nanoscale, and provide a better foundation for future biomedical applications of phosphorene.
How Pressure Affects Confine Water Inside Different Nanoslits.

Abstract:Nanoslits composed of different layered nanomaterials attract great attention in the theoretical and experimental investigations of nanofluidic devices due to their geometric simplicity and unique surface properties. Although many efforts have witnessed simulations of water molecules inside slit-like nanochannels formed by graphenes, the thermodynamic properties and transport behavior of water inside nanoslits formed by different two-dimensional materials are seldom investigated. In this paper, we choose nanoslits formed by graphene, boron nitride (hBN), and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as models, and study the water properties inside these nanoslits using traditional molecular dynamics simulations at different pressures. It is shown that water molecules can form a planar square at high pressure (10 kbar) in all three types of nanoslit. The nanoslits affect diffusion coefficient, orientation of water molecules, number of hydrogen bonds and life-time of hydrogen bonding significantly. The self-diffusion coefficients of water molecules in different nanoslits are all lower than that of bulk water. The diffusion coefficients are significantly affected by the special ordered structure of water, which is caused by the unique surface structure of the nanoslit. The results of the present work will be helpful to understand the unique behavior of confined water in nanoslits composed of different nanomaterials and provide theoretical guidance for many applications, such as desalination and nano-energy conversion.
Atomistic Hydrodynamics and the Dynamical Hydrophobic Effect in Porous Graphene

Abstract:Mirroring their role in electrical and optical physics, two-dimensional crystals are emerging as novel platforms for fluid separations and water desalination, which are hydrodynamic processes that occur in nanoscale environments. For numerical simulation to play a predictive and descriptive role, one must have theoretically sound methods that span orders of magnitude in physical scales, from the atomistic motions of particles inside the channels to the large-scale hydrodynamic gradients that drive transport. Here, we use constraint dynamics to derive a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method for simulating steady-state mass flow of a fluid moving through the nanoscopic spaces of a porous solid. After validating our method on a model system, we use it to study the hydrophobic effect of water moving through pores of electrically doped single-layer graphene. The trend in permeability that we calculate does not follow the hydrophobicity of the membrane, but is instead governed by a crossover between two competing molecular transport mechanisms.

Water transport through a multilayer graphene pore in electric fields: Effect of pore size arrangement

Abstract:In recent experiments, multilayer graphene sheets can be fabricated through van der Waals assembly, where the pore size could have different distributions and arrangements; however, our understanding on how this affects water transport is still rather poor. In this work, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the transport of water through a multilayer graphene pore in electric fields, focusing on the effect of pore size arrangement. We consider the arrangement of two pore sizes, namely S1212 (uniform) and S1122 (concentrated), respectively. Notably, because of different friction environment, the water dynamics exhibit a bifurcation for S1212 and S1122. For example, with the increase in electric field, the water flux and flow both exhibit a monotonous decrease for S1212; while for S1122 the water flux increases monotonously and the water flow displays a minimum behavior. For the change of electric fields and pore length (graphene layer number), S1122 always has a larger water flux, water flow and unidirectional transport efficiency, as well as a smaller translocation time. Consequently, we can conclude that a more concentrated pore size arrangement facilitates the water transport, providing a new direction for the design of high flux nanofluidic devices.

Abstract:Based on isotope labelling, we found that liquid water can afford an ultrafast permeation through graphene-based nanochannels with a diffusion coefficient 4-5 orders of magnitude greater than in the bulk case. When dissolving ions in sources, the diffusion coefficient of ions through graphene channels lies in the same order of magnitude as water, while the ion diffusion is slightly faster than water, indicating that the ions are mainly transported by water flows and the delicate interactions between ions and nanocapillary walls also take effect in the accelerated ion transportation.
Water Compression Induced Ionic Negative Differential Resistance in Nanopores.

Abstract:The mass transport behavior through nanoscale channels, greatly influenced by the structures and dynamics of nanoconfined water, plays an essential role in many biophysical processes. However, the dynamics of nanoconfined water under an external field and its effects are still not fully understood. Here, on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we theoretically show that the ionic current of [Bmim][PF6] through narrow pores in graphene membrane exhibits an ionic negative differential resistance effect-the ionic current decreases as the voltage increases over a certain threshold. This effect arises from the violation of traditional fluid dynamics as the assumption of continuity and homogeneity of fluids is no longer effective in ultrathin nanopores. The gradient of electric field around the atomic-thin layer produces a strong gradient force on the polarized water inside the nanopore. This dielectrophoretically compressed water leads to a hydrostatic force that repels ions from entering the nanopore. Our findings may advance the understanding of hydrostatic mechanism, which governs ion transport through nanopores.

Abstract:Selective transport of liquids is an important process in the energy and environment industry. The increased energy consumption and the demands of clean water and fossil fuels have urged the development of high-performance membrane technologies. Nanoscale channels with the critical size for molecular sieving and atomistically smooth walls for significant boundary slippage are highly promising to balance the tradeoff between permeability and selectivity. In this work, we explore the molecular structures and dynamics of organic solvents and water, which are confined within nanoscale two-dimensional galleries between graphene or graphene oxide sheets. Molecular dynamics simulation results show that the layered order and significant interfacial slippage are universal for all molecular liquids, leading to notable flow enhancement for channels with a width of few nanometers, in the order of ethylene glycol > butanol > ethanol > hexane > toluene > water > acetone. The extracted dependence of permeability, selectivity on the channel width, and properties of molecular liquids clarify the underlying mechanisms of selective mass transport in nanofluidics, which help to understand and control the filtration and separation processes of molecular liquids. The performance of graphene oxide membranes for permeation and filtration is finally discussed based on the calculated flow resistance for pressure-driven flow or molecular diffusivity for diffusive flow, as well as the solubility and wettability of membranes.
Strain Engineering Water Transport in Graphene Nanochannels.

Abstract:Using equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamic simulations, we found that engineering the strain on the graphene planes forming a channel can drastically change the interfacial friction of water transport through it. There is a sixfold change of interfacial friction stress when the strain changes from -10% to 10%. Stretching the graphene walls increases the interfacial shear stress, while compressing the graphene walls reduces it. Detailed analysis of the molecular structure reveals the essential roles of the interfacial potential energy barrier and the structural commensurateness between the solid walls and the first water layer. Our results suggest that the strain engineering is an effective way of controlling the water transport inside nanochannels. The resulting quantitative relations between shear stress and slip velocity and the understanding of the molecular mechanisms will be invaluable in designing graphene nanochannel devices.
Nanoconfined Water Phase Transitions in Infinite Graphene Slits: Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Mean-Field Insights

Abstract:Recent experimental and computational studies have demonstrated that nanoconfinement profoundly alters the phase behavior of water, facilitating complex phase transitions at pressures and temperatures far lower than typically observed in bulk systems. When combined with adsorption, nanoconfinement substantially enhances water uptake, primarily due to condensation occurring at the onset of the isotherm curve-a phenomenon intimately related to the facilitated formation of hydrogen bond networks. In this study, we adopt a dual approach to investigate water confined within infinite graphene slits. Our Molecular Dynamics simulations reveal hysteresis across all investigated temperatures. Unlike in finite slits, where hysteresis arises due to surface tension effects at the edges, in the case of infinite slits, the hysteresis is the result of a genuine phase transition at the nanoscale. We analyze the spatial and orientational arrangements of the water molecules, demonstrating how the graphene surface promotes the formation of a hydrogen bond network in the adjacent water layers. The remarkably low pressure required for water uptake in this nano-environment is explained at the mean-field level using a simple interacting lattice model. This is attributed to the exponential dependence of the critical pressure on the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction.

Abstract:As a material with high specific surface area and excellent chemical stability, graphene exhibited remarkable adsorption and separation performance as well as a wide range of potential applications. The graphene layer played a significant role in influencing gas transmission. In this study, we employed molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the diffusion characteristics and local structures of a mixed system consisting of CH4, CO2, SO2 and H2O. Additionally, we further examined the transformation of the behavior of these mixtures within graphene layers. The order of diffusion coefficients of the four molecules without graphene was H2O > SO2 > CO2 >> CH4. However, in the double‐layer graphene, the order changed to CH4 > CO2 >> H2O > SO2. Higher temperatures and lower pressures were found to facilitate gas diffusion. Temperature and pressure had great effects on the local structures of CH4, CO2 and SO2, while their impact on H2O was limited due to the extensive network of hydrogen bonds formed by H2O molecules. The statistical results of average coordination number revealed that CH4 tended to aggregate with itself, whereas CO2 and SO2 exhibited a tendency to aggregate with H2O. The graphene structure enhanced the separation and transportation of CH4 from mixed systems.

Abstract:Fast slip flow was identified for water inside the interlayer gallery between graphene layers or carbon nanotubes. We report here that this significant flow rate enhancement (over two orders) breaks down with the presence of chemical functionalization and relaxation of nanoconfinement in graphene oxides. Molecular dynamics simulation results show that hydrodynamics applies in this circumstance, even at length scales down to nanometers. However, corrections to the slip boundary condition and apparent viscosity of nanoconfined flow must be included to make quantitative predictions. These results were discussed with the structural characteristics of liquid water and hydrogen-bond networks.
