Abstract:Single-file transportation of water across narrow nanochannels such as carbon nanotubes has attracted much attention in recent years. Such permeation can be greatly affected by the water-channel interactions; despite some progress, this issue has not been fully explored. Herein we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of water-channel attractions on occupancy, translational (transportation) and orientational dynamics of water inside narrow single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). We use SWNTs as the model nanochannels and change the strength of water-nanotube attractions to mimic the changes in the hydrophobicity/polarity of the nanochannel. We investigate the dependence of water occupancy inside SWNTs on the water-channel attraction and identify the corresponding threshold values for drying states, wetting-drying transition states, and stably wetting states. As the strength of water-channel attractions increases, water flow increases rapidly first, and then decreases gradually; the maximal flow occurs in the case where the nanochannel is predominately filled with the 1D water wire but with a small fraction of 'empty states', indicating that appropriate empty-filling (drying-wetting) switching can promote water permeation. This maximal flow is unexpected, since in traditional view, the stable and tight hydrogen-bonding network of the water wire is the prerequisite for high permeability of water. The underlying mechanism is discussed from an energetic perspective. In addition, the effect of water-channel attractions on reorientational dynamics of the water wire is studied, and a negative correlation between the flipping frequency of water wire and the water-channel attraction is observed. The underlying mechanism is interpreted in term of the axial total dipole moment of inner water molecules. This work would help to better understand the effects of water-channel attractions on wetting properties of narrow nanochannels, and on single-file water permeation through nanochannels, which might be helpful in designs of high-flux nanochannels.
Atomistic Simulations of the Permeability and Dynamic Transportation Characteristics of Diamond Nanochannels

Abstract:Through atomistic simulations, this work investigated the permeability of hexagonal diamond nanochannels for NaCl solution. Compared with the multilayer graphene nanochannel (with a nominal channel height of 6.8 angstrom), the diamond nanochannel exhibited better permeability. The whole transportation process can be divided into three stages: the diffusion stage, the transition stage and the flow stage. Increasing the channel height reduced the transition nominal pressure that distinguishes the diffusion and flow stages, and improved water permeability (with increased water flux but reduced ion retention rate). In comparison, channel length and solution concentration exerted ignorable influence on water permeability of the channel. Further simulations revealed that temperature between 300 and 350 K remarkably increased water permeability, accompanied by continuously decreasing transition nominal pressure. Additional investigations showed that the permeability of the nanochannel could be effectively tailored by surface functionalization. This work provides a comprehensive atomic insight into the transportation process of NaCl solution in a diamond nanochannel, and the established understanding could be beneficial for the design of advanced nanofluidic devices.
Water transport through a multilayer graphene pore in electric fields: Effect of pore size arrangement

Abstract:In recent experiments, multilayer graphene sheets can be fabricated through van der Waals assembly, where the pore size could have different distributions and arrangements; however, our understanding on how this affects water transport is still rather poor. In this work, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the transport of water through a multilayer graphene pore in electric fields, focusing on the effect of pore size arrangement. We consider the arrangement of two pore sizes, namely S1212 (uniform) and S1122 (concentrated), respectively. Notably, because of different friction environment, the water dynamics exhibit a bifurcation for S1212 and S1122. For example, with the increase in electric field, the water flux and flow both exhibit a monotonous decrease for S1212; while for S1122 the water flux increases monotonously and the water flow displays a minimum behavior. For the change of electric fields and pore length (graphene layer number), S1122 always has a larger water flux, water flow and unidirectional transport efficiency, as well as a smaller translocation time. Consequently, we can conclude that a more concentrated pore size arrangement facilitates the water transport, providing a new direction for the design of high flux nanofluidic devices.

Anomalous water molecular gating from atomic-scale graphene capillaries for precise and ultrafast molecular sieving

Abstract:Abstract The pressing crisis of clean water shortage requires membranes to possess effective ion sieving as well as fast water flux. However, effective ion sieving demands reduction of pore size, which inevitably hinders water flux in hydrophilic membranes, posing a major challenge for efficient water/ion separation. Herein, we introduce anomalous water molecular gating based on nanofiltration membranes full of graphene capillaries at 6 Å, which were fabricated from spontaneous π-π restacking of island-on-nanosheet graphitic microstructures. We found that the membrane can provide effective ion sieving by suppressing osmosis-driven ion diffusion to negligible levels (~10 –4 mol m –2 h –1 ); unexpectedly, ultrafast bulk flow of water (45.4 L m –2 h –1 ) was still functional with ease, as gated on/off by adjusting hydrostatic pressures within only 10 –2 bar. We attribute this seemingly incompatible observation to graphene nanoconfinement effect, where crystal-like water confined within the capillaries hinders diffusion under osmosis but facilitates high-speed, diffusion-free water transport in the way analogous to Newton’s cradle-like Grotthus conduction. This strategy establishes a type of liquid-solid-liquid, phase-changing molecular transport for precise and ultrafast molecular sieving.

Water Compression Induced Ionic Negative Differential Resistance in Nanopores.

Abstract:The mass transport behavior through nanoscale channels, greatly influenced by the structures and dynamics of nanoconfined water, plays an essential role in many biophysical processes. However, the dynamics of nanoconfined water under an external field and its effects are still not fully understood. Here, on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we theoretically show that the ionic current of [Bmim][PF6] through narrow pores in graphene membrane exhibits an ionic negative differential resistance effect-the ionic current decreases as the voltage increases over a certain threshold. This effect arises from the violation of traditional fluid dynamics as the assumption of continuity and homogeneity of fluids is no longer effective in ultrathin nanopores. The gradient of electric field around the atomic-thin layer produces a strong gradient force on the polarized water inside the nanopore. This dielectrophoretically compressed water leads to a hydrostatic force that repels ions from entering the nanopore. Our findings may advance the understanding of hydrostatic mechanism, which governs ion transport through nanopores.

Abstract:Recently, the application of few-layered graphene-derived functional thin films for molecular filtration and separation has attracted intensive interests due to their unique lamellar porous microstructures. Different from the single layer graphene (GE) with elaborately created nanopores, in the layered GE-derived thin films, molecules with appropriate sizes permeate through the interconnected nanochannels formed between adjacent GE layers. Compared with the nanopores in the single layer GE, these nanochannels allow fast molecule transport and their sizes can also be efficiently controlled for flexible filtration tunability . In practice, the morphology of the nanochannel formed by the GE layers is affected by various factors. For example, during the fabrication of GE thin films by vacuum filtration or spin coating from GE oxide solution, small GE flakes can fold and lie between two other large flakes. In this scenario, the nanochannel becomes asperous. In addition, residual chemical functional groups would also exist in the space of adjacent GE layers, and thus change the shape of the nanochannel. With the change of the morphology of the nanochannel, the water transport behaviors inside it would deviate significantly from those observed in ideally flat GE layers and should be understood. Hence, in this study, the effect of channel morphology on the water transport behaviors through the graphene (GE) bilayers has been investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. The morphology of the channel is modified by applying deformation to the GE layers along the channel thickness direction in a sinusoidal wave profile. The simulation results show that the water flow velocity and transport resistance highly depend on the wave amplitude, period length and the phase angle difference between the two GE layers. To understand the channel morphology effect, the distributions of water density, dipole moment orientation and hydrogen bonds inside the channel have been investigated, and the potential energy surface with different distances to the basal GE layer has also been analyzed. It is demonstrated that the channel morphology significantly changes the distribution of the water molecules and their orientation and interaction inside the channel. The energy barrier for water molecules transport through the channel also significantly depends on the channel morphology. The results obtained in the present study are helpful for the understanding of the water transport in nanoconfiments particularly with the effect of morphology of the confining walls being taken into account. As the potential value of multilayer GE-based membranes in the applications of nanofiltration is being more and more recognized, this study is of significance to provide guidance for the design and application of such GE-based membranes in future nanofiltration and water purification technologies.

Abstract:A survey of cancer incidence among Alaskan Natives for the 5-year period 1969--73 revealed fewer cases overall than expected in relation to rates in the United States. However, significantly increased risks were seen for certain sites: the nasopharynx in both sexes (with excesses over 15-fold), the liver in males, and the salivary glands, gallbladder, kidney, and thyroid in females. Compared with earlier reports, the observations suggested marked changes in cancer incidence among Alaskan Natives over the past two decades, with declines in esophageal and invasive cervical cancers, and increases in neoplasms of the lung, colon, and rectum.
Water Permeation and Wavelike Density Distributions Inside Narrow Nanochannels

Abstract:When water is confined in narrow nanochannels with appropriate radii, the water molecules form single tiles. Here, the gating of water permeation across such nanochannels under continuous deformations and the pattern of the density distribution of water inside are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. When the number of water molecules inside the channel is close to an integer and half, although there is no clearly wavelike pattern for the water density distribution near the center of the channel, we find that the water density distribution, from the data collected with a fixed number of water molecules inside the nanochannel, still shows a clear wavelike pattern. The behavior for the changes in those wavelike water density distributions is found to be consistent with the, gating of the water permeation with respect to the channel deformation. A simple theoretical model is proposed to exploit the physical origin of the wavelike patterns. We find that the potential barriers at both ends together with the tight hydrogen-bonding network are the main responsibility. These findings indicate that both the gating and wavelike pattern are independent of the length of the nanochannels and are helpful to understand similar phenomena in biological channels and other nanoscale pores.
Non-Continuum Intercalated Water Diffusion Explains Fast Permeation through Graphene Oxide Membranes.

Abstract:Recent experimental studies have revealed unconventional phase and transport behaviors of water confined within lamellar graphene oxide membranes, which hold great promises not only in improving our current understanding of nanoconfined water, but also in developing high-performance filtration and separation applications. In this work, we explore molecular structures and diffusive dynamics of water intercalated between graphene or graphene oxide sheets. We identify the monolayer ice between graphene sheets at temperature T below Tc = ~315 K and an interlayer distance d = 0.65 nm, which is absent as the sheets are oxidized. The non-continuum collective diffusion of water intercalation between graphene layers facilitates fast molecular transport due to reduced wall friction. This solid-like structural order of intercalated water is disturbed as T or d increases to a critical value, with abnormal declines in the coefficients of collective diffusion. Based on a patched model of graphene oxide sheets consisting of spatially distributed pristine and oxidized regions, we conclude that the non-continuum collective diffusion of intercalated water is able to explain the fast water permeation through graphene oxide membranes reported in recent experimental studies, in stark contrast to the conventional picture of pressure-driven continuum flow with boundary slip, which has been widely adopted in the literature but may apply at high humidity or the fully hydrated condition only.
Water Diffusion in Wiggling Graphene Membranes.

Abstract:Water diffusion in nanopores has attracted considerable attention in the past decades. Recently the coupling between the vibration of pore walls and movement of confined water has been recognized to largely enhance diffusion. However, its impact on water diffusion in graphene oxide membranes remains to be discussed. Here we explore how water diffusion couples with the thermal fluctuation of graphene nanochannels by molecular dynamics simulations. Our finding demonstrates an approximately linear dependence of diffusion enhancement on temperature; i.e., the wiggling nanopore enhances diffusion at low temperature and inhibits diffusion at high temperature. This mechanism is further extended to be applicable for another two typical layered materials, hBN and MoS2. These results offer opportunities to tune surface diffusion by thermal operation or mechanical activation, advancing the application of two-dimensional materials in membrane separations.

Abstract:Recent studies revealing exceptionally rapid water flow across graphene oxide membranes have highlighted them for potential filtration and separation applications. The physical and chemical features in graphene oxide membranes are heterogeneous, and there remains a great deal of speculation as to what is responsible for the facile water percolation. One potential contributing feature is the variation of interlayer spacing, which can occur naturally or be artificially induced. Herein, water flow across pristine, oxidized, and mixed membranes with interlayer distances of 0.7, 0.9, and 1.2 nm, corresponding respectively to the formation of discrete mono-, bi-, and trilayer water structures, was studied via molecular dynamics simulations. The role of subscapularis repair in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Controversy surrounds the role of the sub- scapularis (SSC) in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) and the need for repair, if possible, at the conclusion of the procedure. QUESTIONS AND PURPOSE: Some investigators have concluded that an intact SSC is critical for stability; others have found no such correlation. What factors should be part of the decision-making matrix on SSC management for surgeons considering rTSA? FINDINGS The data on management of the SSC in rTSA support a design-based approach. Researchers have shown that the SSC is critical to stability when the surgeon uses an implant with a medialized humeral component and medialized glenoid component. However, lateralized designs allow for more stability from horizontal deltoid compression and may not require repair of the SSC. In addition, SSC repair has been shown to increase the workload of the residual posterior rotator cuff and the deltoid in rTSA, both of which may have negative consequences on overall function. Lateralization from the glenoid component increases deltoid work, whereas lateralization from the humeral component maintains deltoid efficiency while improving stability. CONCLUSIONS The need for SSC repair in rTSA can vary based on the implant selected. Humeral and glenoid offset influence the stability and kinematics of rTSA.

Abstract:Porous graphene has high mechanical strength and atomic layer thickness, which make it a promising material for material separation and biomolecule sensing. Electrostatic interactions between charges in aqueous solution are a kind of strong long-range interaction which may have great influence on the fluid transport through nanopores. Here, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate ion and water transport through a 1.05-nm-in-diameter monolayer graphene nanopore with its edge charge-modified. From the results, it is found that the nanopores are selective to counterions when they are charged. As the charge amount increases, the total ionic currents show an increase-decrease profile while the co-ion currents monotonously decrease. The co-ions rejection can reach 75% and 90% when the nanopores are negatively and positively charged, respectively. Cl ions current increases and reaches a plateau, and Na+ current decreases with the charge amount in the systems where they act as counterions. Besides, the charge modification can enhance the water transport through nanopores obviously. This is mainly due to the ion selection of nanopores. Especially, positive charges on the pore edge facilitate the water transport much more than negative charges.
Molecular-Level Insights into Unique Behavior of Water Molecules Confined in the Heterojunction between One- and Two-Dimensional Nanochannels

Abstract:With the increasing importance of nanoconfined water in various heterostructures, it is quite essential to clarify the influence of nanoconfinement on the unique properties of water molecules in the pivotal heterojunction. In this work, we reported a series of classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore nanoconfined water in the subnanometer-sized and nanometer-sized heterostructures by adjusting one-dimensional (1-D) carbon nanotubes with different diameters and two-dimensional (2-D) graphene sheets with different interlayer distances. Our simulation results demonstrated that water molecules in the 1-D/2-D heterojunction show an obvious structural rearrangement associated with the remarkable breaking and formation of hydrogen bonds (HBs), and such rearrangements in the subnanometer-sized systems are much more pronounced than those in the nanometer-sized ones. When water molecules in the 1-D/2-D heterojunctions migrate from 2-D to 1-D confinements, the ordered multi-layer structure in the 2-D confinement are completely destroyed and then transform into different circular HB networks near the nanotube orifice for better connecting to the single-file or helical HB network in the 1-D nanotubes. Furthermore, water molecules in the 1-D/2-D heterojunctions can form stronger HBs with those water molecules further away from the 1-D confinement, leading to an asymmetrical orientational distribution near the orifice. More importantly, our comparison results revealed that the 1-D confinement plays a more important role than the 2-D confinement in determining both the structures and dynamics of water molecules in the 1-D/2-D heterojunction.

Abstract:Water transport through graphene-derived membranes has gained much interest recently due to its promising potential in filtration and separation applications. In this work, we explore water permeation in graphene oxide membranes using atomistic simulations, by considering flow through interlayer gallery, expanded pores such as wrinkles of interedge spaces, and pores within the sheet. We find that although flow enhancement can be established by nanoconfinement, fast water transport through pristine graphene channels is prohibited by a prominent side-pinning effect from capillaries formed between oxidized regions. We then discuss flow enhancement in situations according to several recent experiments. These understandings are finally integrated into a complete picture to understand water permeation through the layer-by-layer and porous microstructure and could guide rational design of functional membranes for energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:The transport of water through nanoscale capillaries/pores plays a prominent role in biology, ionic/molecular separations, water treatment and protective applications. However, the mechanisms of water and vapor transport through nanoscale confinements remain to be fully understood. Angstrom-scale pores (~2.8–6.6 Å) introduced into the atomically thin graphene lattice represent ideal model systems to probe water transport at the molecular-length scale with short pores (aspect ratio ~1–1.9) i.e., pore diameters approach the pore length (~3.4 Å) at the theoretical limit of material thickness. Here, we report on orders of magnitude differences (~80×) between transport of water vapor (~44.2–52.4 g m −2 day −1 Pa −1 ) and liquid water (0.6–2 g m −2 day −1 Pa −1 ) through nanopores (~2.8–6.6 Å in diameter) in monolayer graphene and rationalize this difference via a flow resistance model in which liquid water permeation occurs near the continuum regime whereas water vapor transport occurs in the free molecular flow regime. We demonstrate centimeter-scale atomically thin graphene membranes with up to an order of magnitude higher water vapor transport rate (~5.4–6.1 × 10 4 g m −2 day −1 ) than most commercially available ultra-breathable protective materials while effectively blocking even sub-nanometer (>0.66 nm) model ions/molecules.

Abstract:Selective transport of liquids is an important process in the energy and environment industry. The increased energy consumption and the demands of clean water and fossil fuels have urged the development of high-performance membrane technologies. Nanoscale channels with the critical size for molecular sieving and atomistically smooth walls for significant boundary slippage are highly promising to balance the tradeoff between permeability and selectivity. In this work, we explore the molecular structures and dynamics of organic solvents and water, which are confined within nanoscale two-dimensional galleries between graphene or graphene oxide sheets. Molecular dynamics simulation results show that the layered order and significant interfacial slippage are universal for all molecular liquids, leading to notable flow enhancement for channels with a width of few nanometers, in the order of ethylene glycol > butanol > ethanol > hexane > toluene > water > acetone. The extracted dependence of permeability, selectivity on the channel width, and properties of molecular liquids clarify the underlying mechanisms of selective mass transport in nanofluidics, which help to understand and control the filtration and separation processes of molecular liquids. The performance of graphene oxide membranes for permeation and filtration is finally discussed based on the calculated flow resistance for pressure-driven flow or molecular diffusivity for diffusive flow, as well as the solubility and wettability of membranes.

Abstract:Based on isotope labelling, we found that liquid water can afford an ultrafast permeation through graphene-based nanochannels with a diffusion coefficient 4-5 orders of magnitude greater than in the bulk case. When dissolving ions in sources, the diffusion coefficient of ions through graphene channels lies in the same order of magnitude as water, while the ion diffusion is slightly faster than water, indicating that the ions are mainly transported by water flows and the delicate interactions between ions and nanocapillary walls also take effect in the accelerated ion transportation.

Abstract:Graphene-based membranes have been investigated as promising candidates for water filtration and gas separation applications. Experimental evidences have shown that graphene oxide can be impermeable to liquids, vapors and gases, while allowing a fast permeation of water molecules. This phenomenon has been attributed to the formation of a network of nano capillaries that allow nearly frictionless water flow while blocking other molecules by steric hindrance effects. It is supposed that water molecules are transported through the percolated two-dimensional channels formed between graphene-based sheets. Although these channels allow fast water permeation in such materials, the flow rates are strongly dependent on how the membranes are fabricated. Also, some fundamental issues regarding the nanoscale mechanisms of water permeation are still not fully understood and their interpretation remains controversial. In this work, we have investigated the dynamics of water permeation through pristine graphene and graphene oxide model membranes. We have carried out fully atomistic classical molecular dynamics simulations of systems composed of multiple layered graphene-based sheets into contact with a water reservoir under controlled thermodynamics conditions (e. g., by varying temperature and pressure values). We have systematically analyzed how the transport dynamics of the confined nanofluids depend on the interlayer distances and the role of the oxide functional groups. Our results show the water flux is much more effective for graphene than for graphene oxide membranes. These results are attributed to the H-bonds formation between oxide functional groups and water, which traps the water molecules and precludes ultrafast water transport through the nanochannels.

Abstract:Understanding the behavior of water molecule transport through artificial nano-channels is essential in designing novel nanofluidic devices that could be used especially in nanofiltration processes. In this study, using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we simulated the water flow through different graphene-based channels to investigate the influences of some key factors such as the channel thickness and applied pressure on the water flow. It was demonstrated that the water flow was enhanced by increasing the applied pressure and channel thickness. Our results indicated that a third order polynomial curve could describe the variation of the water flow as a function of the channel thickness and the applied pressure. In addition, we improved the hydrodynamics equation used to consider the water flow through nano-channels, by adding two terms to describe the slip effect and the entrance/exit effect, in which the first term increased the water flow rate, while the second term reduced it. This study may be helpful in designing high-performance graphene-based membranes with some practical applications such as desalination.
