Abstract:As novel planar structures, the metasurfaces exhibit the unprecedented capability to manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves. Therefore, metasurface is designed to apply to metalens, holography, nanoprinting display, encryption, and so on. It is very interesting and meaningful work to integrate bifocal metalens and nanoprinting images into a single metasurface. A method is proposed to combine propagation phase and geometric phase, as well as Malus's law to realize the function of the bifocal metalens and clear nanoprinting display in the near field which can be observed at a certain polarization. This original design expands the functional integration of metasurface and improves applications in image displays, optical storage, augmented reality, virtual reality, and many other related fields.

Abstract:A tunable flat lens is demonstrated based on reconfigurable metasurface, which is realized via changing the phase gradient of the metasurface in sub-wavelength level. The sub-wavelength metamolecules are formed by enclosing a liquid metal plug within microfluidic cavities, which can be tuned by changing the geometry of the metamolecules. The tunable flat lens is consisted of soft material with controllable functionalities. In simulation, the tuning of the focal length from 5 lambda to 7 lambda is demonstrated as the proof of concept. This reconfigurable metasurface can be used as a standard guideline to design different electromagnetic wave manipulation systems in realizing the dynamic control of beam steering, anti-reflection and focusing functionalities etc.

Abstract:A programmable metasurface is presented for 2D dynamic focusing demonstration. The proposed metasurface is composed of reconfigurable unit cells by integrating a voltage-controlled varactor diode to change the unit resonant property. By simply changing the array of biasing-voltage profiles, the arbitrary scanning trace can be realized. The simulated near-field distributions results are presented to show the reconfigurable property of the metasurface.

Abstract:Tunable three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic metasurfaces are essential for achieving selective modulation of polarized waves, but they usually require complex designs and the use of smart materials, posing great implementation challenges. Here, we propose a novel kirigami-based reconfigurable electromagnetic metasurface, which consists of a kirigami-based deformable thin polyimide substrate and periodically arranged copper split-ring resonators. By simple stretch, the two-dimensional (2D) planar metasurface can be uniformly transformed into a 3D state, enabling it to effectively and selectively modulate linearly and circularly polarized waves. Experimental and numerical results reveal the mechanical deformation and transmission characteristics of the metasurface under applied strains. It is shown that the metasurface exhibits good selective transmission tunability while the resonant frequency remains basically unchanged for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarized waves. Furthermore, the selective tuning mechanism and the influence of geometrical parameters are also illustrated by the equivalent circuit analysis.

Abstract:Varifocal mirrors, which have various applications in optical coherent tomography and three-dimensional displays, are traditionally based on the fluid pressure or mechanical pusher to deform the mirror. The limitations of conventional varifocal mirrors are obvious, such as the heavy size of the device and constraints of tunability, due to their mechanical pressure control elements. The reprogrammable metasurface, a new flat photonic device with multifunction in an ultrathin dimension, paves the way towards an ultrathin and lightweight mirror with precise phase profile. Here, an active reconfigurable metasurface is proposed to achieve the manipulation of the wavefront. The meta-atom in the metasurface is integrated with one varactor diode to manipulate the electromagnetic response. As the bias voltage increases from 0 to 20 V, the resonant frequency shifts from 5.5 to 6.0 GHz, which generates a broad tunable phase region, leading to 5 diopters (about 50%) change without any mechanical element and a broad tunable frequency band. In addition, the focus point can not only be steered in the axial line above the metasurface but also in the whole working plane. The proposed focus-tunable metasurface mirror may be a key in enabling future ultrathin reconfigurable optical devices with applications such as multiphoton microscopy, high speed imaging and confocal microscopy.

Abstract:Metasurfaces enable a new paradigm to control electromagnetic waves by manipulating subwavelength artificial structures within just a fraction of wavelength. Despite the rapid growth, simultaneously achieving low-dimensionality, high transmission efficiency, real-time continuous reconfigurability, and a wide variety of reprogrammable functions is still very challenging, forcing researchers to realize just one or few of the aforementioned features in one design. This study reports a subwavelength reconfigurable Huygens' metasurface realized by loading it with controllable active elements. The proposed design provides a unified solution to the aforementioned challenges of real-time local reconfigurability of efficient Huygens' metasurfaces. As one exemplary demonstration, a reconfigurable metalens at the microwave frequencies is experimentally realized, which, to the best of the knowledge, demonstrates for the first time that multiple and complex focal spots can be controlled simultaneously at distinct spatial positions and reprogrammable in any desired fashion, with fast response time and high efficiency. The presented active Huygens' metalens may offer unprecedented potentials for real-time, fast, and sophisticated electromagnetic wave manipulation such as dynamic holography, focusing, beam shaping/steering, imaging, and active emission control.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, as 2D artificial electromagnetic materials, play a pivotal role in manipulating electromagnetic waves by controlling their amplitude, phase, and polarization. Achieving this control involves designing subwavelength meta-molecules with specific geometries and periodicities. In the context of microfluidic metasurfaces, optical properties can be dynamically modulated by altering either the geometric structure of liquid meta-molecules or the refractive index of the liquid medium. Leveraging the fluidity of liquid materials, microfluidic metasurfaces exhibit remarkable performance in terms of reconfigurability and flexibility. These properties not only establish a cutting-edge research area but also broaden the scope of applications for active metasurface devices. Additionally, the integration of metasurfaces within microfluidic systems has led to novel functionalities, including enhanced particle manipulation and sensor technologies. Compared to conventional solid-material-based metasurfaces, microfluidic metasurfaces offer greater design freedom, making them advantageous for diverse fields such as electromagnetic absorption, optical sensing, holographic displays, and tunable optical meta-devices like flat lenses and polarizers. This review provides insights into the characteristics, modulation techniques, and potential applications of microfluidic metasurfaces, illuminating both the current research landscape and promising avenues for further explorations. Leveraging the fluidity of liquid materials, microfluidic metasurfaces exhibit remarkable performance in terms of reconfigurability and flexibility. Abstract:Metasurface-based flat lens have great potentials for applications in compact and portable cameras. However, the properties of optical metasurfaces are strongly limited by the intrinsic ohmic loss of metal and the fixed working distance. Here, we propose a highly efficient all-dielectric metasurface lens working in near-infrared frequency range. By exploiting silicon nanoblock as meta- atoms, the silicon metasurface produces phase changes covering 0 to 2π and near-unity reflection, inducing the focusing of light over a broad wavelength range. Interestingly, the focal length of such an ultrathin flat lens can be dynamically controlled by incorporating tunable materials such as liquid crystals. By utilizing the phase transition or electrical alignment of liquid crystals, the focal length has been tuned up to 10 %. We believe our research will be important to accelerate the applications of optical metasurfaces.

Abstract:Shaping the flow of light at the nanoscale has been a grand challenge for nanophotonics over decades. It is now widely recognized that metasurfaces represent a chip-scale nanophotonics array technology capable of comprehensively controlling the wavefront of light via appropriately configuring subwavelength antenna elements. Here, we demonstrate a reconfigurable metasurface that is multifunctional, i.e., notionally capable of providing diverse optical functions in the telecommunication wavelength regime, using a single compact, lightweight, electronically controlled array with no moving parts. By electro-optical control of the phase of the scattered light from each identical individual metasurface element in an array, we demonstrate a single prototype multifunctional programmable metasurface that is capable of both dynamic beam steering and reconfigurable light focusing. Abstract:In this paper, a tunable THz lens array based on reconfigurable metamaterials is reported. The metamaterial consists with 40 × 40 liquid metal microdroplets, in which the shape is tuned under different air pressures. The droplets are formed by injecting the liquid mercury into a pre-designed microchannel network and arranged to focus incident THz wave. The focus spot size can be tuned with different droplet geometries. As a result, a tunable THz lens is constructed and the smallest spot size of 0.54λ is achieved. The tunable metamaterial lens is realized through simple fabrication processes, which has potential applications in flat lens and imaging system.
Design of Real-Time Tunable-Focus Active Metasurfaces

Abstract:A design of real-time tunable-focus reconfigurable active metasurfaces is proposed in this paper. With the element space of 16 mm (0.458 lambda), a 1-bit real-time reconfigurable active metasurface element is successfully designed to work at 8.595 GHz. From 7.71 GHz to 9.43 GHz, the element realized a 1-bit phase shift with a relative bandwidth of 20% within 180 degrees +/- 30 degrees. Moreover, a negligible cross polarization is obtained and the amplitude loss is less than 0.8 dB for two states. Furthermore, the reflective metasurface is designed with an aperture size of 512mmx512mm (32x32) and aperture efficiency of 43.7% for the tunable beam focusing. By effectively designing the states of each element on the metasurface array, a single-beam focusing on theta = 0 degrees and dual-beam focusing on theta = +/- 15 degrees are achieved, respectively. Finally, the full wave simulation is performed to demonstrate to the functionalities and effects of the proposed metasurfaces, whose results are in good agreement with the theoretical design.

Abstract:In this paper, a reconfigurable metasurface is realized using microfluidic technology, which controls the amplitude and phase of the incident wave at sub-wavelength resolution. A dispersion-corrected beam deflector and a flat lens are demonstrated for proof-of-principle where the flat lens and beam deflector arc tuned, in response to the change of the incident wavelength, to maintain their functionalities. This will make various applications such as on-chip spectrometers, high-performance dispersion-controllable devices in the next-generation telecommunication networks, and wavefront-tunable devices.

Abstract:Metasurfaces present excellent performance in acoustic wave control with subwavelength thickness, but are typically studied and built for fixed applications. This paper looks at a convenient tunable metasurface design with Hehnholtz resonance. Moving sliders in the design allow full phase shift with a high transmission ratio in a broad frequency bandwidth. The design can be used for tunable wave front redirection, focusing with varying wavelengths and sound source illusion, as are shown in numerical and experimental examples. This design could be a superb option when there is a need for tunable acoustic wave modulation.

Abstract:We propose a dual-band coding metasurface capable of manipulating the near-filed behaviors of electromagnetic (EM) waves independently in two discrete frequency bands. As a proof of concept, we show that the programmable coding metasurface can focus the incidence into spots with distinct focal distances at two operating frequencies. Full-wave simulations are performed to validate the design principle and the dynamic focusing functionality. The proposed metasurface may be utilized to improve the information capacities, which may have potential applications in radar and wireless communication systems.

Abstract:Frequency-controlled metasurfaces have attracted significant attention for a variety of applications, such as radar imaging and 5G communication, owing to their small size and low cost. However, due to the inherent material dispersion of these devices, bandwidth is an essential requirement for their controlling their wavefront. To evaluate the broadband performance of frequency-controlled metasurface focusing systems, a multiresonant model is used to achieve controlled manipulation of frequency-splitting and focusing reflective metasurface; further, the transition from broadband disorder scattering to user-desired reflection is obtained. It is shown that the focusing position can be controlled by the careful design of each unit cell. As a proof of concept, a broadband focusing metasurface with frequency-splitting effect over the entire X band, i.e., 8-12 GHz, is designed and experimentally demonstrated, which can control the position of focal spots with different wavelengths by its achromatic and reflective characteristics. It is believed that the proposed metasurface will provide useful insights for wavefront manipulation in broadband and chromatically corrected imaging systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a versatile metasurface with a dual-band functionality characterized by a low-profile (0.0369λ) coexistence of transmission and reflection modes. The proposed metasurface operates in the reflection mode within the frequency range of 6.4-6.7 GHz, and in the transmission mode within the range of 11.3-12.1 GHz. Simulation results demonstrate that, owing to the unique structural design of the metasurface, both modes exhibit a remarkably stable frequency decoupling even when operating at closely spaced frequencies. Notably, the metasurface maintains its operational integrity even under conditions of significant incident angles. Through individual phase control of three distinct channels on the metasurface, we integrate functionalities such as two-dimensional lensing, holographic imaging, and diffuse scattering. Numeriacl simualtion confirms the realization of the intended functionalities. This study holds significant reference value for achieving frequency reuse in proximate bands and the design of multifunctional metasurfaces.

Abstract:Flexible and tunable devices have, for decades, been the subject of many research areas, including, integrated systems, flexible electronics and photonics, which are calling for advanced properties of materials. Metasurfaces with designable optical properties have now been intensively studied for flexible photonic devices. Enabled by microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and microfluidic technologies, reconfigurable metasurfaces base on mechanical actuations offer new approaches for flexible and tunable devices. In this view, we introduce metasurfaces based on MEMS actuations, droplets arrays, flexible substrates and microfluidic systems together with their applications on flexible and tunable devices.
