Abstract:The catalytic activity of noble-metal nanocrystals is mainly determined by their sizes and the facets exposed on the surface. For single crystals, it has been demonstrated that the Pd(100) surface is catalytically more active than both Pd(110) and Pd(111) surfaces for the CO oxidation reaction. Here we report the synthesis of Pd nanocrystals enclosed by {100} facets with controllable sizes in the range of 6–18 nm by manipulating the rate of reduction of the precursor. UV-vis spectroscopy studies indicate that the rate of reduction of Na 2 PdCl 4 can be controlled by adjusting the concentrations of Br − and Cl − ions added to the reaction mixture. Pd nanocrystals with different sizes were immobilized on ZnO nanowires and evaluated as catalysts for CO oxidation. We found that the activity of this catalytic system for CO oxidation showed a strong dependence on the nanocrystal size. When the size of the Pd nanocrystals was reduced from 18 nm to 6 nm, the maximum conversion rate was significantly enhanced by a factor of ∼10 and the corresponding maximum conversion temperature was lowered by ∼80 °C.

Abstract:As the electron transfer to CO2 is a critical step in the activation of CO2 , it is of significant importance to engineer the electronic properties of CO2 hydrogenation catalysts to enhance their activity. Herein, we prepared Pt3 Co nanocrystals with improved catalytic performance towards CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Pt3 Co octapods, Pt3 Co nanocubes, Pt octapods, and Pt nanocubes were tested, and the Pt3 Co octapods achieved the best catalytic activity. Both the presence of multiple sharp tips and charge transfer between Pt and Co enabled the accumulation of negative charges on the Pt atoms in the vertices of the Pt3 Co octapods. Moreover, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy confirmed that the high negative charge density at the Pt atoms in the vertices of the Pt3 Co octapods promotes the activation of CO2 and accordingly enhances the catalytic activity.

Abstract:A facile and low-cost method has been developed to successfully fabricate 3D flower-like and sphere-like Ni2 GeO4 nanostructures with tunable sizes and shapes. It is found that the hard template, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) nanopsheres, is essential to the formation of the final products. The as-prepared nanostructures can serve as an outstanding support for Pt nanoparticles after surface modification with L-lysine. In the catalytic test of CO oxidation, Pt-Ni2 GeO4 nanoflowers exhibited much higher catalytic performance compared with Pt-Ni2 GeO4 nanospheres, representing a typical size-dependent catalytic property.

Abstract:Pt-based multimetallic core-shell nanoplates have received great attention as advanced catalysts, but the synthesis is still challenging. Here we report the synthesis of multimetallic Pd@PtM (M = Ni, Rh, Ru) nanoplates including Pd@Pt nanoplates, in which Pt or Pt alloy shells with controlled thickness epitaxially grow on plate-like Pd seeds. The key to achieve high-quality Pt-based multimetallic nanoplates is in situ generation of CO through interfacial catalytic reactions associated with Pd nanoplates and benzyl alcohol. In addition, the accurate control in a trace amount of CO is also of great importance for conformal growth of multimetallic core-shell nanoplates. The Pd@PtNi nanoplates exhibit substantially improved activity and stability for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) compared to the Pd@Pt nanoplates and commercial Pt catalysts due to the advantages arising from plate-like, core-shell, and alloy structures.
In-situ Formed Stable Pt Nanoclusters on Ceria-Zirconia Solid Solutions Induced by Hydrothermal Aging for Efficient Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:Pt nanoclusters (Pt-C) on the surface of ceria-zirconia solid solutions exhibit superior low-temperature CO oxidation activity compared to Pt single atoms (Pt-1). However, the redispersion behavior of the Pt-C to Pt-1 lowers the efficiency of CO Oxidation. In this work, the stable surface hydroxyl groups were constructed by high-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment. Specifically, the Pt-1 catalyst (Pt/CZOe-SA) prepared by atom trapping was subjected to high-temperature hydrothermal treatment to obtain the stable Pt-C catalyst (Pt/CZOe-HT) with in-situ formed Pt-C. The experimental results showed that Pt-C with 2-3 nm size could achieve excellent low-temperature activity and thermal stability. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations revealed the specific evolution process of dynamic dispersion for Pt-C with or without hydroxyl groups from the femtosecond scale, suggesting that the hydroxyl groups limited the dispersion of Pt-C in the form of "energy fence". The hydrothermal treatment not only introduced high-temperature stable hydroxyl groups to improve the stability of the in-situ formed Pt-C, but also optimized the ratio of Pt-1 and Pt-C, and then enhanced the low-temperature activity by the synergistic effect between Pt-1 and Pt-C. The present work can provide theoretical guidance for developing high-performance and high-stability Pt-based catalysts.

Abstract:In this study, three Co/N-C catalysts were prepared by pyrolysis of bimetallic zeolitic imidazole frameworks with different Co/Zn ratio, and the critical active Co species in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was investigated. The three catalysts had distinct cobalt species but similar N configuration and graphitization degree. The Co species were distributed as single atoms (Co SAs) at a Co/Zn molar ratio of 1:8, while Co nanoclusters (Co NCs) and Co nanoparticles (NPs) would be formed with further increase in Co content. The degradation efficiency of BPA did not show correlation with the increasing of Co content in catalyst. Based on the catalytic performance comparison and reactive species detection, Co SAs was identified as active sites, which could interact with PMS to generate 1O2 via path of PMS→HOO*→O*→1O2. However, the role of NCs and NPs in directly activating PMS was negligible. In addition, the increase of Co content in Co/N-C catalyst would result in mass cobalt leaching, which enhanced the BPA degradation via homogeneous catalytic reactions with CoIV as reactive species. It is an effective way to design the Co/N-C catalyst with high catalytic activity and stability via regulating the formation of Co SAs.
Identifying the morphology of Pt nanoparticles for the optimal catalytic activity towards CO oxidation

Abstract:The morphology of nanoparticles (NPs) is crucial for determining their catalytic performance. The dramatic changes in the morphology of metal NPs during reactions observed in many in situ experiments pose great challenges for the identification of the geometry for optimal catalytic activities, which arouses the controversial understanding of the reaction mechanism. In this work, taking CO oxidation as a model reaction, we coupled a multiscale structure reconstruction model with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to study the catalytic performance of the Pt NPs with changing morphology and reaction conditions. Through the quantitative analysis of contour plots for turnover frequencies, we show that the NPs with more well-coordinated sites exhibit optimal activity under CO-rich conditions at higher temperatures, while the reactivity of NPs with more low-coordination sites is optimal under O2-rich conditions at lower temperatures. Further analysis indicates that the competitive adsorption of CO and O2 plays the key role, in which the structure with optimal activity has a closer CO and O coverage. This work not only reconciles the controversy of the active geometry in the experiments, but offers an efficient method to guide the rational design of high-performance catalysts.
Crystal Facet Induced Single-Atom Pd/CoxOyon a Tunable Metal-Support Interface for Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:CuO/ZnO catalysts with different ZnO morphologies, i.e. nanoplates (p-ZnO) and nanorods (r-ZnO), have been prepared to test for CO oxidation and CO 2 hydrogenation. Strong morphology-dependent CuO x -ZnO interactions were observed, which are tightly associated with the ZnO morphology. p-ZnO predominantly exposing polar {0 0 2} facets greatly promote the CuO x -ZnO interactions, contributing to the stabilities of CuO x /ZnO catalysts in both reactions. Experimental evidences reveal that CuO-ZnO interfaces act as the active sites in CO oxidation. CuO/p-ZnO catalyst with stronger CuO-ZnO interactions can facilitate the generations of fine CuO and interfacial Cu(I) species, responsible for the adsorption and reactivity of CO and subsequently the high (intrinsic) activity in CO oxidation. However, CuO/ZnO catalysts undergo in situ restructuring to generate Cu/ZnO in CO 2 hydrogenation, whose catalytic performance is determined by the key step of CO 2 activation. Consequently, Cu/r-ZnO catalyst possessing more surface basic sites exhibits better catalytic performance. These results greatly deepen the fundamental understanding of Cu-based catalysts in both reactions and broaden the concept of morphology-dependent catalysis of oxide-based nanocrystal catalysts that varies with the reactions catalyzed.

Abstract:The nonstoichiometric metal oxide Ni0.3Co2.7O4 served as a support for small-sized Pt nanoparticles. The whole synthesis of the hybrid material can be kinetically controlled and no further surface-modification treatment was required. More importantly, the as-obtained strongly coupled PtNi0.3Co2.7O4 hybrid nanoflowers exhibit remarkably enhanced catalytic activities compared with PtNiO and PtCo3O4 hybrid samples. This result indicates that it is possible to optimize the catalytic performance of noble metals by using a nonstoichiometric metal oxides as a support instead of a stoichiometric metal oxide.
In Situ Surface Etching Strategy for Bimetallic Mofs-Derived Oxides and Their Catalytic Properties

Abstract:MOFs and their derivatives are excellent carriers with large specific surface area. Here, we propose a new strategy to engineer a supported-Pt core shell MOF-derived metal oxide catalyst. In this work, ZnCo-glycol microspheres were used as sacrificial templates, and the pre-prepared Pt nanoparticles were modified in MOFs during the in situ surface etching strategy. Compared to the ZnCo-2MI-330 and ZnCo-Pt-330, ZnCo-Pt-2MI-330 presents good catalytic activity (T10=110 °C,T90=123 °C) and excellent stability on CO oxidation reaction. By detailed characterization, ZnCo-Pt-2MI-330 remains the original pore structure of MOFs and provides a larger specific surface area, while the addition of Pt NPs changes the content of active species (the high ratio of Co3+ and active oxygen species) in the metal oxides. More importantly, the strategy effectively improves the noble metal catalysts are apt to lose their activities during the thermal catalytic caused by the serious working environment.

Abstract:Exploring the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts has been a general concern for sustainable and clean energy. Here, Pt-embedded CuO x-CeO2 multicore-shell (Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS) composites are fabricated at room temperature via a one-pot and template-free procedure for catalyzing CO oxidation, a classical probe reaction, showing a volcano-shaped relationship between the composition and catalytic activity. We experimentally unravel that the Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites are derived from an interfacial autoredox process, where Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ encapsulated by self-assembled ceria nanospheres with CuO x clusters adhered through deposition/precipitation-calcination process. Only Cu-O and Pt-Pt coordination structures are determined for CuO x clusters and Pt NPs in Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS, respectively. Importantly, the close vicinity between Pt and CeO2 benefits to more oxygen vacancies in CeO2 counterparts and results in thin oxide layers on Pt NPs. Meanwhile, the introduction of CuO x clusters is crucial for triggering synergistic catalysis, which leads to high resistance to aggregation of Pt NPs and improvement of catalytic performance. In CO oxidation reaction, both Ptδ+-CO and Cu+-CO can act as active sites during CO adsorption and activation. Nonetheless, redundant content of Pt or Cu will induce a strongly bound Pt-O-Ce or Cu-[O x]-Ce structures in air-calcinated Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites, respectively, which are both deleterious to catalytic reactivity. As a result, the composition-dependent catalytic activity and superior durability of Pt/CuO x-CeO2 MS composites toward CO oxidation reaction are achieved. This work should be instructive for fabricating desirable multicomponent catalysts composed of noble metal and bimetallic oxide composites for diverse heterogeneous catalysis.
Morphology-electronic effects in ultra-model nanocatalysts under CO oxidation reaction: the case of ZnO ultrathin films grown on Pt(111)

Abstract:The study of the surface morphology and interface of metal-oxides is crucial for understanding the behavior of these model systems as nanocatalysts. Besides, understanding the interplay between morphology, stability, and reactivity is crucial for designing efficient catalysts. Here, we investigated the stability and dewetting of ZnO ultrathin films on Pt(111) under CO oxidation conditions. For films < 1 monolayer (ML), CO-induced dewetting occurs at the metal-oxide interface or defects. The morphology, dependent on thickness, influences reactivity. (6x6) structures show greater CO binding and structural changes compared to (4x4) structures, which exhibit resilience due to Zn—OH formation. ZnO electronic properties, as revealed by Auger spectroscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) investigations, vary with thickness. Low-thickness films [< 2 Monolayers (ML)] exhibit metallic-like behavior, possibly due to Zn—Pt interaction, while thicker films show n-type semiconductor behavior with a bandgap opening (E_BG = 0.9 eV at 2 ML). DFT calculations of the local density of states (LDOS) as a function of ZnO thickness confirm the thickness-dependent electronic structure, with 0.3 ML films having a higher LDOS near the Fermi level than 1 ML films. These findings highlight the critical role of ZnO morphology in determining its stability and reactivity which opens up avenues for designing efficient and more stable ZnO-based nanocatalysts for a wide range of chemical reactions, including CO oxidation and CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Tungsten oxides with different morphologies including platelet-like sheets, nanobelts, and nanoparticles have been successfully prepared by changing the ions in the synthetic solution. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared analysis and N2 adsorption were employed to reveal the morphological evolution, and results show that the morphological evolution can be attributed to the alteration of coordination environment of tungstenic cations contained in the synthetic solution. Furthermore, these products have been applied into hydrodesulfurization measurement to investigate the relationship between the morphologies of tungsten oxides and their catalytic properties. It is concluded that the catalysts originating from nanobelt-like tungsten oxides have highest catalytic activity and excellent selectivity due to their scrolled character and strong metallic edges.
Interfacial sites in platinum-hydroxide-cobalt hybrid nanostructures for promoting CO oxidation activity

Abstract:Metal-oxide/hydroxide hybrid nanostructures provide an excellent platform to study the interfacial effects on tailoring the catalysis of metal catalysts. Herein, a hybrid nanostructure of Pt@Co(OH)(2) supported on SiO2 was synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation of Co(OH)(2) with the aid of H2O2 and successive urea-assisted deposition-precipitation of platinum nanoparticles. The Fenton-like reaction between Co-2(+) and H2O2 during the impregnation process facilitates the formation of active interfacial sites. This hybrid nanostructure exhibits much higher catalytic activity towards CO oxidation than Pt/SiO2 nanoparticles with a similar Pt loading and particle size. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was used to track the CO adsorption processes and to identify the reaction intermediates during CO oxidation. It shows that the OH species at the Pt-OH-Co interfacial sites could readily react with CO adsorbed on neighboring Pt to yield CO2 by forming *COOH intermediates and oxygen vacancies. Under the CO + O-2 oxidation conditions, O-2 molecules are activated by the oxygen vacancy and react with the CO molecules adsorbed on Pt to generate CO2, via forming the highly active *OOH intermediates as observed by DRIFTS.
Role of Morphology in Improving the Catalytic Performance of ZnCo2O4 for Soot Oxidation

Abstract:The extent of interaction between carbon and catalyst profoundly shapes soot oxidation results. The catalyst configuration notably influences the frequency of contact points in solid-solid interactions. This investigation studies the impact of three distinct ZnCo22O4 catalyst morphologies and their redox property on soot oxidation. The formation of the cubic phase of ZnCo2O4via three distinct methods was revealed during XRD analysis. SEM analysis unveiled varying morphologies, including rod-shaped, rose petal-shaped, and bead-like structures. Notably, ZnCo2O4 exhibiting bead-like morphology demonstrated heightened levels of chemisorbed oxygen species which was observed during XPS analysis. The presence of Co2+ and Co3+ occupied at octahedral site ZnCo2O4 acted as the active sites for soot oxidation. With continuous redox property (Co 3+ → Co2+) leading to the generation of active oxygen species and with an added advantage of surface morphology, the M2 sample (with bead-like morphology) exhibited superior soot oxidation activity, which is evident by its T50% value of 402°C. Abstract:Novel PtCo nanoflowers were synthesized using oleylamine-oleic acid system via one-pot chemical reaction. The difference in morphology with different amount of oleic acid revealed that the formation of the PtCo nanoflowers was attributed to the precipitation effect of oleic acid both in nucleation stage and growth process. The obtained PtCo nanoflowers show excellent performance in catalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, when compared with PtCo nanoparticles and commercial Pt/C. The high activity is attributed to the porous structure formed by assembling of smaller nanoparticles and electron interaction of Co to Pt.

Abstract:Identifying the active sites of catalysts under working conditions is crucial for precise understanding of reaction mechanisms and rational design of catalysts. However, the nature of active sites of bimetallic catalysts for CO oxidation is still a subject of debate. Herein, we employ in situ X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy to monitor the realistic structures of active centers in a bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalyst during CO oxidation. This catalyst brings 100% CO conversion at room temperature and 30-fold higher turnover frequency than monometallic Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The in situ studies reveal that under the CO oxidation condition, a fraction of Co atoms are segregated from the PtCo alloy into the surface CoO species that decorates the remaining PtCo nanoparticles through direct Pt-O-Co interfacial bonds. The bond-valence analysis unravels one dangling Co-O coordination per Co2+ in the surface CoO, which acts as the active sites for O-2 activation. The synergy between the CoO species and the PtCo alloy brings the superior catalytic activity. We also show that the directly connected Pt-O-Co interface is more beneficial to the catalytic performance than the unconnected Pt-CoO interface and provides a promising strategy toward the design of advanced catalysts for the redox reaction.
